This video documents my journey learning Portuguese in 7 days by breaking down what is ordinarily and overwhelming task (learning a new language) and focus my time and energy on the most important parts. My goal here is become conversational as quickly as possible and demonstrate that you're capable of more than you think if you're strategic & disciplined about how your approach things.

For anyone learning a new language and getting frustrated by what you see as a lack of progress: I was in Paris before the pandemic shut everything down. Hung out with a French friend, went to a party where I listened to her have a conversation in French with two other people. I didn’t catch everything they said but I *understood* enough to know they were talking business and she was giving them advice. They kept turning to me to apologize about not including me but I was more than happy listening in and realizing I understood more than I thought I would. Understanding is the first step! Keep going in whatever endeavor you’re taking on.
Thank you for sharing this, it is a great encouragement.
Why does this have to be so motivating?! Now I'm gonna go learn Greek cause why the heck not lol.
good luck :D just watched the video and im hopping on spanish!
Καλή τύχη - Good luck!
How has it gone?
I already know portuguese, german, english, french (only a little) and would like to be able to either speak Spanish since I already understand most of it or learn a new language like swedish since I follow swedish influencers and would like to understand what they're saying.
EDIT: or maybe improve my german since I lost some vocab it's my second language btw, learned with 3 years of age.
Considering Greek is not necessarily the most popular language to learn, I'm excited to see someone else who wants to too.

I've always thought the most important part in learning a language (or anything really) is actually taking the first step. It doesn't have to be boring or technical, once you have a small basis it gets a lot more fun, cause language is always cultural and once you get to that, there is no stopping the learning process. Loved this video!

Hey Nathaniel. I have just watched part 1 of your endeavour to learn Portuguese and, as an ESL teacher and Brazilian Portuguese native, I have to say that it made my day to hear what you have to say for different reasons. Firstly, I see that your main message here is how to learn a foreign language, and I have to say that the way you do it is quite interesting. For me, it seems like it can be a very efficient way to learn a language, although I also have to say that it seems like you put a lot of effort into it, which is great, but not something that everyone language learner is willing to do. Adults students, in particular, are usually quite busy with their lives, so from experience, I would not expect that many people trying something like that. I was wondering if you could add to your suggestions something like breaking down your study periods into 25 minutes blocks (Pomodoro technique) and have breaks in between. Apart from that, all your ideas seem great!
What I would like to stress, however, is how positive your message is, in my opinion. After working with language acquisition for so many years, it is my impression that our mindset plays a pivotal role in terms of how effectively we can learn a language. Your video provides an interesting view on how to encourage people to define their motivations to learn a language, and at the same time offer a realistic, data-based method for learning a language that seems to really work.
Thank you so much for making this video. I hope you do not mind sharing them with my students :)

Hi Nathaniel, I am struggling to learn Portuguese being a native Spanish speaker. As you said, it's a lot of unlearning, you would guess that it would be easier because these languages have similar words but it is not. And I wanted to find inspiration to keep going. So thank you for making this video, it's good to see that others struggle too. And if it was easy everyone would do it
Você consegue😉
I get this, too! I’m grateful for all the Spanish vocabulary I learned in high school but need to disassociate myself from the pronunciations.
I close my eyes and listen several times before I allow myself to “read” the words. It’s helping since as I’m trying to recall the new Portuguese word the Spanish takes a backseat.
Nathaniel offers great advice. I just started learning Portuguese in my spare time as I plan a caminho de Santiago adventure….and now I’m obsessed. Brazilian Portuguese is different, of course, but I’m hoping I can tweak pronunciations while I’m there and the people of Portugal will be forgiving.
Boa sorte!

Great resources and ideas!! I will DEFINITELY incorporate these ideas and resources into my current approach (first Pimsleur, to get used to the sound of the language, and Duolinguo to help learn some vocabulary and grammar in a fun way). I am currently learning Russian and Ukrainian...similar in some ways, but quite different!!
I can't prove it, it's just a theory I have, and perhaps it's a function of being part of a generation that was in high school just before the internet arrived, but . . . I think the fact that you start out writing lists *by hand* is really important. There is something about the physical activity of writing out words that I have found to be a profound aid to memory. I think there's a neural connection being made there that makes retention and retrieval easier later on.
My experience-I started to learn my first foreign language in high school (Spanish). Everything written out by hand. Didn't have laptops or use computers except to type papers sometimes. Though I didn't use the language for decades, I still retain a lot of what I learned and a great deal of vocab-which is sometimes comically frustrating when speaking Italian and a Spanish word pops out instead.
Fast forward to the last ten years or so (the decade of my 40s) in which I studied numerous languages, especially Italian. I'm essentially fluent now in italian, but I still find myself looking up the same words over and over, and my grammar isn't as developed as it could be. And no, it's not because I'm older now. I'm of sound mind. I think the main difference is that I used software and apps to study Italian/French/Dutch/Croatian, etc. Just tapping a screen or a keyboard isn't creating those neural connections the way writing did. I've gone back to that method. Time will tell if I start to retain things better.
There are articles on that matter, I'm sorry but I don't remember the source, but a while ago I read some papers about the influence of handwriting on learning. But basically, you are creating a motor patter that connects to the letters and the words. When you just type your brain only 'reads' the key and hit it. But when you write, your brain has to recall and actively output the letters, which is a deeper process. So your experience and observation are accurate! Hope you can find the articles and use this knowledge to practice the new languages you've learned.
Absolutely!! When I started, I wrote numbers (digits) in pen and the written out form in pencil so I can erase and keep rewriting it. Helped me immensely

"Why" is actually written "por que", separated, and "because" is written "porque", together. There are actually four written variations of that word that mean different things. It's not that important, most people don't care and will understand you no matter what, but I wanted you to know.
Porque - Because (why)
Por qué - interrogative(why) and exclamation (what)
Porqué - (what) cause or reason
Por que - concerning (which or by the)
If you need help this is my Instagram jing.csar 🙋
*Porque* : because
*Por que* : used on direct interrogative frases - _Por que_ você fez isso? ( _Why_ did you do this?) - and in indirect interrogative frases - Eu quero saber _por que_ você fez isso. (I wanna know _why_ you did this.)
*Por quê* : used on the end of frases - Eu ouvi falar que você saiu da escola. _Por quê?_ (I heard you quit school. _Why?_)
*Porquê* : when used as a noun - Esse é o _porquê_ de eu ter saído da escola. (That's the _reason_ I left school.)
"Por QUE razão me ligaste?" aqui o "QUE" refere-se à razão, é "what" (For WHAT reason did you call me?)

And since you have other experiences speaking other Roman languages it becomes easier to learn Portuguese, something that someone that do not have your background cannot achieve. As a language teacher I did not like the message in you title, but I liked the message that anyone can learn a new language if they put their mind into it. I just hope that you did not put such a tittle that makes people believe and get their hopes up that they can learn a language in seven days and if they can not do it they would be frustrated and maybe never want to learn another language again.
Luis Malaquias sim, concordo.
Concordo plenamente.
Eu conheci o canal agora e já estou adorando! Estou aprendendo francês e certamente as dicas vão me ajudar muito. Thank you and congratulations for your portuguese, if you need someone to practice I'm here :) haha
As a Brazilian, I feel so humbled that you took the time to learn our language.
As a language learner myself, I always keep thinking about how foreigners would learn Portuguese, and the amount of ambiguities that our language has. For instance, some years ago, the "trema" (umlaut) was abolished, and so it became frustratingly hard to know when "gue/que" is pronounced as in "guerra (guerra)" or as in "pinguim (pingüim)"... so yeah, sorry about that; I myself only learned to appreciate it when I learned Spanish and saw why it even existed in the first place.
Also, I really feel like Portuguese is one of the hardest languages to really appear as a native while speaking it. Maybe it's because people usually just try to be cool and use a lot of slangs (if unsure, use them sparingly!); I don't know. Maybe I'm just guilty of it being my mother-language!
Anyway, there is a lot of great things in Portuguese: there are many video-essay channels popping up these days (Mimimidias, Quebrando a Caixa, Ludoviajante, just to name a few), many great bands (classics like Legião Urbana, Titãs, etc etc the list goes on), novelas (not really a fan, but Avenida Brasil is the greatest novela, fkn fight me), and so on and so forth. We usually don't give it all much value, but I personally put much of it in perspective after beginning to learn other languages (God, I just want some good German/Italian video-essay channels to follow!). But I digress :D
I totally agree with you, finally someone noticed that Portuguese is a pretty language.Anyway,I'm learning English by myself too
Should I recommend you some great German video essay channels?
@cacerpop I'm probably jumping abruptly in the conversation hahaha But I'd be thankful if you could suggest some 😊

Nathaniel: Here's a list of Portuguese words I've picked up from my Brazilian friends.
Me: First word I saw on the list was caralho hahahah you've got your essential vocabulary right there.
People do have their priorities 😂
Caralho hahahahahahahah this a bad word
hey does that mean a**hole?
@@rohitb405 it means d*ck, but it's used to swear like "damn"
Rohit B sometimes it means fuck! too
Hey, Nathaniel, these lists of commonly used words are actually quite useful! They are picked out by algorithms and are only representing what is mostly used by amount not context! But the good part is that they are mostly the same in the German and Romance languages which are predominantly spoken in the western hemisphere! It was quite funny to compare several of them and they have practically all the same words! :D
And beginning with this lists, organize them and adding some alternative vocabulary (for example words that look or sound more familiar) you have quite an easy and effective start right from the get-go!
I am brazilian and I speak for all of us.. i think we are like chinese when we see someone willing to learn our language and speaking it or trying to speak it.. we get amazed and we need to check it out.
Some people would not be able to learn your way because of the affective filter. They cannot even imagine being face to face with a native not knowing much of the language.
I did some research on the affective filter and it’s so interesting!! Here’s to hoping I can learn enough about it so that I fight it.
Thanks for introducing it :)
@Ace Ar Jr lol fr
Japanese is easier than Portugese omg
Of course you're wrong
@Ace Ar Jr you're justo one among many other people on the internet.
I have a feeling that this video may go viral here in Brazil, it's a part of our culture to behave positively when we talk/see foreigners trying to speak Portuguese (sometimes it's a little overwhelming 🤣). Wish you good luck in your journey dude. I'm learning Spanish right now and what I realized is that we, as Portuguese speakers, can understand what Spanish speakers say, but they can't understand us most of the time, so I suppose that we mess the pronunciation up 100% haha. I'm really excited to check out the next videos, pls keep up the good work.
It has been a while since this video was posted, but I do want to say that I love your videos, your ideas, love to listen your thoughts and tha way you see the life. I have started watching your channel to practice listening in English, but I have remained here for much longer than that.
Your editing is amazing brother
*Don't lie, this inspired you to learn a language*
It really did hahaha
but then you are going to be disappointed because it's impossible to learn a language in 7 days.
@@jollycomputer9748 ah, I just see the points he makes and now I'm like, "yes, I'll set these goals", obviously nobody can learn a language in this amount of time, especially if they have other responsibilities, and I dont care much for the misleading title, but I still found it well made and inspiring as I just started learning French and Russian

Thank-you for this! I've been off and on with learning Spanish for a long while now and this has inspired me again!
You are very beautiful 😊😉👍
unrelated but was anyone else watching this guys video and going: “omg the EDITING IS AMAZINGGG” and was completely baffled by his skills?- no? just me? okay..
wish I knew how to do that
Wasn't "baffled", but did notice he has excellent editing skills, for sure. I get the impression he's a very motivated individual who applies himself 100% to whatever interests him. Kind of person I'd like to have a long chat with over coffee. Preferably in a sunny piazza.
I just finished reading a book called "Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes" by Daniel Everett. He is a linguistic anthropologist who has done much of his work in the amazon with the Pirahá tribe. He learned how to speak Pirahá and Portuguese while expressing the importance of respecting and learning different languages.
I too found out that this aproach is the best. I just move from words that I use the most and topics that I want to speak about: basic expressions, languages, hobbies, likes and dislikes, family, etc. Slang and other expressions come in on their own after some time. Music does help a lot. You really highlighted all of this - thank you for that ❤
Whoa! I love this. Thank you. I'm now inspired to create an accelerated program to learn English. So many ideas came to me.
Like writing a little story song to the music of songs I love. What fun!

I'm Brazilian and I'm going to say just one thing: if you have the motivation to continue on your trek to fluency in Portuguese, do it. You're going to need a lot of dedication to start understanding conversations, because we speak so fast. I wish you luck on your journey.
His editing evolves at an alarming rate. O.o
Does he pay someone to edit his videos?

I'm brazilian and for me, the hardest part of learning a new language is becoming free of the fear of committing mistakes. I know how to speak, but fear is something big inside of me. Speaking and writing are hard bc I don't wanna people making fun of me. I loved your video and your approach to language.
I really appreciate what you are saying and admire your persistence and methodology. I have a certain way I have been wanting to explore learning Portuguese and I am very encouraged that you found your own way, so I will follow up on mine.

Eu diria no mínimo 2 anos.
E a minha dica principal: goste do idioma! Boa sorte! 😆
If you are a native speaker of a romance language and you are aware of the similarities between romance languages, really it's a matter of months if not weeks (if you work really hard) to learn how to speak another romance language.
