Now, a year and a half later I've made so much progress and I'm planning on taking an intensive language course in Italy probably in 2022. I'm literally in love with the Italian language. I'm from the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and I had to learn German from the end of primary school. I didn't really like this language but didn't hate it either because I was not too bad at it (on the contrary I loved English from the beginning). When I went to university, I chose English but had to choose a second main subject. After eliminating all the things that didn't inspire me I chose German. The level was too hard (regarding the level you have at the end of high school), and so I decided to go to a summer language school for one month. At that time I had been studying German for ten years, but wasn't able to hold a conversation. This month in Germany was like a revelation! I could speak, I met such nice people, and since then German holds a very dear place in my heart. I made my two internships during my Tourism degree in Austria and it was so cool!
Being able to understand and speak 3 languages fluently is so awesome and opens to so many amazing things and people, I'm so thankfull for that (even if university was not for me, it has really helped me in this way) ♥
I've found out that for me watching kids cartoos in the language I want to learn helps a lot, because the vocabulary is basic, the accents are aren't crazy and the rythm of the conversation is slower. It also helps a lot to have actual contact with people that speak that language. One of the most helpful methods is to actually go and live in the country where that language is spoken, this way you are kind of forced to learn at least some very basic words like "entrance".
I agree! I watch reality shows where families and kids are involved therefore slowly learned daily vocabs.

My favorite book about language learning and it’s infinitely uncountable benefits and changes to your persona is “in other words” by Jhumpa Lahiri. I really recommend it to you! It’s one of my favorites :)

I can give grammar tips. When I was learning German, I accidentally improved my English grammar by translating it backwards and forwards on Duolingo. I used to have sloppy grammar, which my friend's numerous attempts to correct my grammar had gone to waste. It is because I don't really care, until I took an interest in learning a language is when I am more conscious about grammar. Before I don't even know what present perfect is, and I absolutely dreaded tense during my school years.
My point is learn a grammar overview around beginning phase and then for intermediate phase you can forget about grammar and focus mostly on input and output, only until beyond intermediate is when refining grammar easier to achieve (for me personally that is).
Hallo, I have lived most of my life in Germany and only a small portion of it in America. When I went to elementary in Germany we learned both German and English. Then in 6th grade I learned Latin. I was born in America though.

I remember that I used to absolutely dreaded learning English, because no matter what I did, I will always get it wrong with my essays having loads of red marks and I have given up on tenses because English tense is just so confusing. Back then, my English, l believe, was already at a B2/C1, but I cannot improve my grammar.
Currently my German is at an A2. Learning the German grammar through translation has a surprising affect on English, for example German doesn't have the auxiliary verb 'do' so I came to realised that I always make the English mistake such as "I did went to ...." through using Duolingo. And additionally, it became much more clear to me what preposition and conjunction are, e.g "in order to......" vs "um......zu......" and why use whom (also thanks to German's Akk and Dat case) with the help of a text book. Although German grammar is a beast on its own but I believe it's because I am having too little input and output in comparison to English.

so excited for this! especially resonated with what you said about learning a language in school. there is so much that inspired, yet frustrated me with school's structure of that learning process, leading to a push and pull feel towards language learning. the mindset that was pushed upon us only made me more incentivized to break out of it and look for new avenues to learn more effectively. thank you both so much for creating this course. i think the value it will bring to the experience people have learning languages will be tremendous, and it's truly a wonderful gift to us all.

I lost my momentum in studying Japanese since the pandemic started. I was literally experiencing withdrawal every time I attempted to study. It was just very recently that I started studying properly again. I hope I can progress even further this coming year.

@@Stillmikaela nihongojin or nihongohito which translates to japanese language person. it doesn't make sense kinda. or maybe i'm wrong. i typed it in kanji though and found that the romaji name of the app is nihongonomori.

What a wonderful video! I can see the passion that you have for language learning. What you are saying is true, traditional methods from the classroom can be extremely frustrating. The key is to really discover your OWN way to learn. Language learning for me has obviously broadened my perspective and I am now addicted to it, but it has also paved the way to my much more confident self...not only when I speak, but also assuring myself that I know how to find and use information to learn topics outside of language learning (this is especially helpful during a time where self study in general, it seems, is inevitably getting more popular). It seems both of you have found the this for yourselves and have learned to constantly adapt your own methods to your needs/learning from your experiences beforehand. Thank you for inspiring others to learn more about the world through languages!

This is so inspirational, I tried to learn Italian before but gave up within a week, I'm going to try again. I've been learning English for 2 years now but haven't made it past b2 level (self-taught) I first used this book called "Inglés básico A. ghio. d" it really helped and of course CZcams videos. So if you want to learn English that book might help. Just from my point of view when you learn a new language by yourself at home the hardest part is to find people to practice with, even on apps.
Ill be moving to Portugal early next near and have purchased your course - Obrigardo!

Your videos always inspire me in my journey of living life more deeply and meaningful after loosing my mom last year. This month, I started trying to learn Japanese.
Your videos are great. Thanks! I learnt french being thrown in the deep end in a Swiss public school and for three months was overwhelmed. When you only know english learning a Latin-based language it is really rough with all the verb tenses. I advocate throwing yourself without fear of making mistakes and working really hard at grammar and mixing with local at eye chance you get. I also am an advocate rote learning verb tenses by repetition and memorizing poems which helped me in french. It is a mark of respect to master the language of each country you live in.
I'm really in love with swedish language and culture so I've been learning it during this pandemic. I also decided to start learning some french recently. Try to express myself is the most challenging part but your content has truly inspired me to improve! Saludos desde Chile :)

Hi, i am italian and i'm learning English. I have to admit that despite is considered the most simple language it's hard for me to study it without anyone to practice with. I know there are a lot of apps but I am too insicure and aware of this to talk to someone else in English. But I am doing a lot of progress and I am really happy because I'm noticing every little improvement. In middle school I studied French for three years and for me it was easier than English, but I forgot everything during high school so now I'm here trying to re-learn this beautiful language. I found the same thing in Italy, super welcoming and expressive - I'm a big personality so always felt at home there I also had enough of the language to pass. Made friends very easily was always invited places for anything from festivals to family trips.
Great video! I loved going to school in France just over the border from Geneva back in the mid-80’s. Immersion is the way to go! Arrive in September and be fluent by the holidays by making sure you stay away from all the other English speakers and only hang with the locals. Worked for me and I then ended up majoring in French! I later studied Persian-Farsi with Iranian teachers at the Defense Language Institute, but French served me well, especially after working for years for a Canadian company in Québec.

As a native English speaker and English teacher, I think the best way to learn English is with speaking. If you can find a language partner who doesn’t mind correcting you, that would be best.
i feel this video so much, new languages are so near and dear to my heart, the feeling of speaking them is so cool :) i am german, i took English and French in school, while english there was pretty easy for me and mostly fun, learning french in school was sooo hard. i really improved my french in France on the Seine for 17 months with real french captains on a rivercruiseship. Right now i am trying to learn italian, it is a bit hard but i will stick with it!
I really enjoyed learning English in school! And thought it was fairly effective, all things considered, taking into account that I was able to communicate in it after a few years of such lessons. Same for French.

I‘m using my CZcams to improve my English - I kind of know the daily words but sometimes it’s hard to build a nice sentence without thinking about it for a long time.

Thanks both for this video! I am currently living in Spain and I agree with you that the Spanish spoken is different from the Spanish taught at french school. I agree that it gives you a lot of opportunities, such as better job and you can better enjoy your trips. I am currently learning Portuguese and Arabic and I hope being fluent soon 😊

This looks really cool. Both of my parents are fluent Spanish speakers (de Uruguay y Argentina, vos!), but I was raised in a predominantly English-speaking culture. It wasn't until I had an intensive language immersion experience (just like Johnny's) that I actually learned the language. And, interestingly enough, I haven't forgotten it a decade later.
I feel confident that Nathaniel and Johnny will be excellent at teaching the skill of language-learning. 👌🏼
That's great to hear! Both of my parents are fluent Spanish speakers as well (Puerto Rican and Dominican) and I've lived in the US my whole life, so my Spanish isn't the best. I hope to eventually become fluent in Spanish by immersing myself in the language too!
i studied abroad and our language class was 12 hour a week and extremely boring. i enjoyed the presentation part where we got to speak in the forge in language in front of the class. we did it once a semester. i loved seeing how far my classmates have come. i do believe that we got most if not all of studying done outside the classroom. we’d study for our exams with a native from our dorm who’d be more than happy to help. since i was fully immersed in the language. i left fluent
I guess I'm glad you guys wanna share your interest for language learning with communities which are probably not made up of language learning enthusiasts (and that might decide to start delving a bit more into this really huge but still interesting topic).
At the same time though, with awesome free resources like the Immerse with Migaku channel and the Refold website by Matt vs Japan, which both provide invaluable information and really go in depth in what language learning is really about, providing also great advice about how to go in order to apply the theoretical info they provide, I honestly would tell you guys reading these comments to not buy this course. If you can get such great stuff for free, why spending money?

I want to do this with German and Japanese. I already feel confident in English. And I agree with you. I never payed attention in class. I was a "bad student" but I started to experience the language more that studying it without knowing what I was doing. I acquired it faster than my classmates, it was almost effortless.
Great video! One question though, how do you travel around countries (to immerse in the languages) with all your things/books? How do you manage your personal belongings while constantly moving around? Thanks

Your view of language learning and practise at school is interesting: in French schools it's supposed to be different, ie not that frustrating, and teachers give a clear goal to each lesson plan with a final project, at least in junior high school. Any helpful external resources are welcome though, and the purpose of it all is exactly...to get out of school to live new experiences and keep being curious en enthusiastic.
