There are few mistakes in this narration. As an example (01:46): Oleg was not the son of Rurik. Oleg was the regent of Rurik's under-age son called Igor.
I guess firstly you have to remind that he lied to you because he is talking about Ukrainian history! not russian, centuries ago Ukrainian history and name of Kyiv Rus were stolen by Moscow , which appeared later then Kyiv!

I am not a food historian I only know that there was a dispute on the topic of the vodka invention because some people, Polish in particular, tried to prohibit exporting Russian vodka as vodka. After a Russian scientist Похлебкин had presented his research the prohibition was lifted. If you want to reopen the case who am I to stop you. My national pride can live with it even if you succeed.

They were so excited and amazed by beauty of Christianity that brought fascinating tales to the Prince Vladimir, who decided to accept faith of Christ. @@pluto6383 It is written that Rurik came to Novgorod in 862 after Slovene and other tribes called him and his brothers (Sineus and Truvor) here. It's the year that is thought to be the year of creation of Russia, though there were tribes all over the area where they had dwellings (from Novgorod to Kiev). Then Oleg united Novgorod and Kiev in 882.
882 is the year when Kievan Rus was founded

I think it's because after the Mongols left there wasn't much left so it was just European Russians united under the Kingdom of Rus settling the Steppes and building trade ports on the Black Sea. Siberia is mostly uninhabited so they claim it because they surround it. The video could've done a lot more.

+113Robinho I think, I can tell - Siberia was rather empty space, and a lot of peoples there were joined not by force, but by their own decision, actually all the peoples of Russia saved their religion, culture, traditions ets! Those, who didn't want to join, were conqured as everywhere, but still had the same rights and obligations! Generally speaking, colonies became a part of a country, not a colonie!

And quite fake just like rewritten history. People think they know what happened hundreds years ago created by someone on CZcams recently. Let's just say Tartaria wasn't just myth, that is exactly why similar grant building all over the world and monuments like pyramids all over the world as well.

Kievan Rus was not a state. This is the territory where the Rurik dynasty ruled. Each prince was independent by himself. But family ties mattered in different situations

actually no there were two major battles documented where the vikings fought the Inuit, both ended with a viking victory with minor casualties. the first one 1003 22 vikings died and the natives retreated, the second in 1010 where the vikings lost 2 and the natives retreated. The reason they didn't take over the place was due to many reasons but the main one being lack of resources. Iceland (who went there) did not posses the manpower nor resources to really take over the place and since the natives had nothing of value raiding there proofed useless so they left. there is evidence however that they actually went there for wood up until the 13th century.
Those Vikings came and saw that there is good land and good men. They decided enough to have long hikes and robberies, we stay here, we will cultivate the land, raising livestock and defend against enemies of this land and the people with whom they have become one family. The descendants of those Vikings still live in that area. And nothing has changed since then, those who come to the Russian land with war, would never leave her alive, and those who come with love and peace he finds a new home here.

Мне кажется или тут все не точно, Олег не сын Рюрика, а регент его сына, небыло государства "Киевская Русь" была Русь от которой произошли три страны Россия, Украина и Беларусь, "Киевская" - это термин придуманный в 19 веке для обозначения времени когда Киев был столицей Руси, также как и "Новгородская", "Московская" и тд. Русь, никто же не говорит Парижская Франция или Берлинкая Германия. Школьник в 11 классе, который очень историю любит, явно смог бы обьяснить лудше и спорил бы целыми часами. Ведь на Западе в историю России даже невникают, а некоторые вещи они сами придумали, особенно про Ивана Грозного.

Никто не говорит "Парижская Франция", потому что политическое устройство Франции той эпохи не было завязано на Париже, чего нельзя сказать о Руси: по законам наследования де-юре правителем Руси являлся князь, правящий в Киеве, что приводило к бесконечным войнам и интригам за этот город, который давал право номинально править всей Русью. Так что название Киевская Русь вполне имеет право на жизнь, и позволяет явно отделять это политическое образование от, например, региона Русь или других русей: Залесской, Новгородской и тд

+Jürgen Kraise Exacly, we call it "Bizantines" to differentiate Roman Empire before the split and after Roma's fall, otherwise it would be always Roman Empire. It's a modern convention, but even though I know that, I will still call "Bizantines" to the Bizantines when I want to refer to them.

The United States became the greatest economic-military power in world history in less than 240 years and the only economy that has been able to equal this happens to be one of the world's oldest civilizations so I'd like to think that they had one hell of a head start. Actually, as we were told in our history lessons here, in Russia, the story about choosing between 3 religions is a myth. In fact, Christianity was chosen to make a connection with Byzantine empire, because at that time you couldn't marry a person of different religion and so on.

That's amusing what low opinion people have nowadays of ancient politicians. I am yet to see one successful ruler who ruled according to personal preferences, tastes and habits. This kind of rulers gets replaced in few years now, and always was throughout the history from pre-roman times.
It is the Chazar story. They lived in between Muslims and Christians who were at each other's throat but somehow could let Jews live. So Chazars' chose was the obvious - Judaism.

William Gill_Esq. Kyivan Rus was the Origin of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. Kyiv and the Kyivan lands were Ukraine (as seen in the Kyiv Choronicles). But Moscow was founded by a Rus prince, and Novgorod dialect grew into Russian, too. So yes, the Kyivan Rus is, to some extent the History of Russia, but they were not the ONLY Slavic tribe there, and the main people were Kyiv people. Russia as it is today became that way under the Mongols and after Ivan (the great) rebelled against them.
P.S. Technically, since Novgorod did not _want_ to give up Paganism, Russia, in fact, did _not_ choose Christianity. It also saddens me how you forget about Belarus. Belarus! She is _also_ of the Kyivan Rus!

So TED claims Cyrillic alphabet was created for the Russian empire by the Byzantine one. I would strongly suggest checking your resources again and looking into the history of the Cyrillic and in particular the history of the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who being emissaries of Christianity send by the Byzantine Emperor in West Eastern Europe and being chased out of there by Prince Rostislav of Great Moravia, where Cyril creates the Glagolitic alphabet, go to Bulgaria where Knyaz Boris I accepts them and their alphabet, which is later transformed by their students into the Cyrillic alphabet. The students then disperse to different parts of Europe, some going to Russia.

To call the Christianity that the Rus adopted "Orthodox" is not technically correct as the label is applied today. They adopted the Chalcedonian Christian faith, which would split into Catholic & Orthodox a century later. They aligned with Orthodoxy because of their East Roman political ties and cultural influence.
Additionally, that map did not do justice to the territory that came under the control of Poland and Lithuania. The Commonwealth contained much, much more territory--including modern Ukraine and Belarus.
Though I find it most peculiar that the question of this video's title is never finally answered. We're given the history throughout the middle ages, but nothing with respect to the developments that occurred throughout the last five hundred years. For those that are curious, the synopsis is this:
The Grand Duchy/Tsardom of Moscow and the Republic of Novgorod were the two most powerful fragments of the old Rus, and throughout the Renaissance most of the old Rus was restored under the rule of Moscow by 1600, mostly under Ivan the Great. This is a good intro to the huge complex story, but the transition between 4:20 and 4:30 is that very part that should have answered the question "why is Russia so big?", and it fails to do so. The whole video is about the ancient story of a rather small territory only known better because it was closer to Europe, and in fact Russia is big because in the16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century it colonized the vast territories of Siberia and Far East (in a manner that was not necessarily peaceful, but completely vegetarian compared to other European colonizers).
Unlike Britain, France, Spain and Portugal, Russia managed to keep most of its colonies and military conquests (but not all of them - and personally I am happy that many of the so-called post-Soviet republics found their way to sovereignty and better life), primarily because its rule was comparatively unobtrusive (the native population could keep their culture, language, religion and economic systems as long as they pledged loyalty and paid taxes), the assimilation was slow, gradual and often successful, and because the collapse of empires in the XXth century saw Russia occupied with completely different processes and ideas within the USSR. Another factor is that if you live in a colony and your territory is on the shore, the economic benefits of separation are potentially high. For a landlocked territory they are doubtful, and the cost of liberation is always very expensive. Therefore, many territories that are now within Russia as republics decided not to pay that cost.

You are clearly wrong in the place where you think that they did not impose significant pressure on occupied nations. Look up how many nationalities does RF contain and how is their culture going(there is a lot of them and their languages are dead as well as their culture). Not all the post soviet countries saved it’s culture. Look at Belarus which language is now officially dying. All the other countries are fighting their way back away from russian language to their own culture. Speaking about Ukraine, you can read about suppression of the Ukrainian language on the Wikipedia. There were around 180 laws for the last 5 centuries from Poland and Russia total, but the former is clear winner in banning. Not mentioning Stalin’s terror, Holodomor and countless elite repressions. So no, the struggle was real.

In fact, the name Kievan Rus was used much later ( 18-19 Century) by historians to determine the time when Kiev had become a capital of the land. Novgorod was the center before and Moscow became later. It is proper to call it Ancient Rus.

both are ancient. сука/suka is unchanged from the Proto-Slavic (making it at least ~1500 years old in its present form); блядь/blyad', from Proto-Slavic *blędĭ, must have already had its denasalised vowel in place around the time Russia was founded (9th century), and lost its ultrashort final vowel, along with the voicedness on the /d/ (which was what eventually gave rise to the popular deliberate misspelling блять/blyat'), around the 13th or 14th century.

As a fellow TED speaker i have to add... some facts are not accurate. For instance... the first Mongol raid with 37k ppl was not the one that swept Russia. They won and did phenomenal damage - but Russian army weakened them as well. So they left. But what Russian princes did not expect is that the Horde would return with more than 100k army (it is easy to calculate as Tomerlan had a very strict and specific "metric" system for army squads 10-100-1000-10k". And this Horde - yes, they swiped Russia with Kiev as capital - this country stopped to exist. But on the north - Novgorod managed to make a deal with the Mongols and stayed more or less independent. With time Novgorod and Moscow became the cradle for this new great commonwealth of nations. What kills me as a Russian is that many people don't know why the horde did attack Russia. The fact is - they did not want to - their intelligence told them that Russians are people of word, with strong army and rich culture. The Mongols sent emissaries to establish relations. Russian princes killed them as they thought those were spies (history says that in reality those princes did it because they wanted to engage other "brothers" in a war as a power-struggle tool). With emissaries killed the horde who's values were built on honor had no choice but to return and avenge their honor. We paid "an iron price" for this murder. But the Horde later paid for theirs - with no great leader leading the horde it becomes unmanageable. We used it. As a result - we've blended together and became one country.
There were other inaccuracies and I truly regret you decided to skip the part that is very relevant - before Mongol invasion old Russia (specifically under Vladimir "Great Nest" rule) was the most democratic country in the old world - women were allowed to learn and study + provide serious advice to the warriors. Kids went to schools (free). Most leaders were elected publicly. Most decisions were taken together - there was no typical monarchies... they were pretty unique forms of ruling. It is important for a reason - deep in our genes we feel that this vision lead as to extinction - we were unorganized, we could not take fast and effective decisions facing the horde, disputes took forever etc. I think blending with the Horde made us a country that learned its lessons and right now is trying to build something that did not exist before, something that is based on both democratic principles and ability to make fast and effective decisions overnight. It would take time - you cannot build it in one night. But I have hope.
The question is rather go into democracy or combine the power of west and east. The second is more beneficial even without complete democracy. Russians learned it hard way. Why would they want any more democracy? I think we should combine democracy for our people with the rule of an authority. Both democracy and authority are useful tools for the people.

Thanks, but "Kievan Rus" is just the name of a time period, like Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece introduced as early as 19th century. It's not the name of a state. Why didn't you stress on the fact that Oleg actually had conquered Kiev before he "moved his capital to Kiev"? Vladimir is in the wrong place in your map. No mention of the Novgorod Republic, just that there was some democracy? Seriously? It has been much more influential city than Kiev. It used to be a part of the Hanseatic League if the name tells you anything.

What are the lies?
I would say there are more unconfirmed information.
First of all, the word Rus would actually mean Red (the red people for whatever reason, I may be wrong, but the word ruso remained in the archaic versions of other Slavic languages meaning red).
Second, there are archaeological sites that imply that the letters known now as Cyrillic predate Christianity (tombstones at Vinča, Serbia, around 6th century B.C.).
Why there are few to none written records from that time is because:
a) The Church would systematically destroy old Slav scriptures (and also building churches in the very sites of pagan worship)
b) Communism (I do not want to even begin explaining this)
And c) Isolation from the West
I do realize that the lack of evidence is not evidence itself, but you do have to realize that due constant turbulence in Slavic societies (i.e. wars,economic recession,ideological disputes etc.) there has been very little concern for archaeology and historical research. There are other things I could point out, but I am not a historian, I may be wrong, and I cannot be bothered to type anymore :)

There was some old "runes", but they was so primitive and undeveloped (versus scandinavian "runes") that modern history states that they were not for actual writing but just some symbols of pagan gods.

It is proved by genetic methods that the Rouriks were not "vikings" or what we call now Nordics/Scandinavians. As well, it a mistake to translate "varyag" as "viking". That was a wrong hypothesis.

In recent years some of them have participated in several filogenetic studies. The results are published. You could find them with a search online. There is no need to open the tombs of the Rouriks kept in one of the Kremlin's cathedrals, and in other places.

@@alexwhite3830 "Viking" does not represent a nation or ethnic group. It the term to mention a subpopulation dedicated to a particular activity, and as consequence, keeping a style of life. Viking travelled to remote lands and also mixed with other peoples. So, even some of them were of darker skin and hair as portrayed in the fantasy movies. As well, there were finno-ugric groups of people amongst the Vikings. Vikings is not a synonym of Varyag in genetics. Viking is neither a synonym of "Scandinavian".

Oleg is not Rurik's son. Igor is the only known son of Rurik and Efanda. Oleg is Efanda's brother. Oleg's daughter, Olga, married Igor (yes they were cousins). And Rus people are mixed collection of Baltic, Norse and Slavic Tribes. They even raided Constantinople together. Rurik didn't unite the only Slavic Tribes he united all (Baltic Slavic and Norse) the tribes from lake Ladoga, Russia to what today is Baranovichi, Belarus to what today is Nizhny Novgorod Russia. Oleg spread the country down to Kiev. And whenever we speak about the Rus it involves what today is western Russia, Northeastern Ukraine and Belarus.
Edit: Originally Rurik and Oleg from Ladoga (Veliky Novgorod), Whether they were of Norse Slavic orBaltic origin it doesn't matter. (Slavic People Baltic and Norse people intermixed way before the viking age during the vendel period, that's why they all look alike.). Their power spread to Kiev.

Well, if for you history is just a fairy tale with pictures and the adventures of ancient kings from one point to another, without facts, detailed studies and different points of view on the same event, then you will certainly like it.
Only this is nonsense. History is politics, or rather a chronicle of political events on behalf of a certain nation, state, or unknown sources found in a certain territory a very, very long time ago. The fact that it is used now, and even more so it was used before, in order to justify their political goals, is an obvious fact, and there is nothing strange in this.
What is really strange is that in this video there is really no history of Russia, this is a cursory mention of the beginning of the formation of the future Russian state, also with errors like "Igor is the son of Oleg."
This is the history of the state of Rus' and its collapse, but how Russia itself appeared is not affected here at all.
It is not clear where Ukraine and Belarus came from then. How could a provincial city "raise its head" gradually grow into a huge empire? etc. What happened to the Golden Horde and how did Moscow capture Novgorod?
In general, this is not a historical video, but a collection of chaotic facts about the history of Russia piled up in a heap.
