- Today, a review of a very odd little item, Spyderco's Duckfoot-shaped ceramic sharpener, which is odd in design, but super compelling in use: The Golden Stone.

You forgot to make the disassembly video.
Zero set-up required, useful and effective. Sounds like the kind of tool that actually gets used!
I think this summarizes Sal Glessers philosophy. It may look odd at first, but there is a method behind the madness and you wind up with something that you don't want to be without. He's a genius.
I believe you hit the nail on the head. I felt that way about Spyderco knives, then I bought one. Now they are my favorite company and I'm somewhere around a dozen.
@@The4cp same thing for me. Had no interest in Spyderco. Got one, used it, fanboy for life 🤗
Agreed. Great designs made Spyderco iconic in a few short decades.
"Idiot proof". You underestimate my powers
george hill 😂😂😂🤘🏻
Challenge accepted!
Hold my beer
I’ve seen someone put a coin under a corner to change the angle
Late to the Game it would probably work pretty easily on this too. Just put a coin under the parts that touch the table
"Is he on quack!?"... Classic
Thanks have been waiting for this. Cant wait watching emidiatly.😍
The the thin groove in the stone can also be used on fish hooks, which should be kept extremely sharp if you want fish instead of just strikes. 8^)
No sir, this ceramic stone, is designed for woodcarving tools, not for fish hooks or knives.
Thought this looked weird but bought it on a whim. Now I use it all the time wouldn't want to be without it. Enjoyed the video.
Cool happy late Thanksgiving Nick keep up the awesome content
@NickShabazz it’s been a bit since you did this video, just wondering do you still use it or if you found anything better to use in between sharpenings Thanks!
Nick, what’s a good system for a smaller blade the like the UTX-70 by Microtech or smaller pocket knife EDCs?
Damn you, Nick, and your dad humor. Thanks for all the great reviews. Happy Thanksgiving.
The scallops looked asymmetrical at one time so was not sure if it was designed to give you the same angle rocking it back and forth. But it could just be the lighting and camera angles.
After many sharpenings the edges are dark with metal and it loses effectiveness. Elbow-grease-it-back-to-life with a green ScotchBrite pad and Comet cleanser.
What do you think is the best budget sharper
I wonder if that leather case could also be used as a strop? With the stone inside I could definitely see it replacing a paddle strop.
Holy macaroni! The price of Spyderco sharpening devices shot up too. I did some price searching on the Golden Stone and saw that the Sharpmaker diamond rods are $10 more than when I bought them four years ago.
How will it work with D2?
I have one of their double-sided stones in a pouch and it works very well.
You quack me up Nick ! You don't duck the hard questions and i'm down with that .
Kerryrwac ... very witty ! Cheers new zealand 😄
I have the Sharpmaker as well as the Double Stuff (my backpacking sharpener) and two different grit table top ceramics from Spyderco. They're all great for the jobs they do, but I have been thinking about getting this for the same purpose you are using it for.
If I do, I'm definitely gonna take a Selfie with it & find a way to send it to you! LoL
P.S. - Before the two stone system was reinvented into the Sharpmaker , it came in a thick cordura pouch and was just the Spyderco Sharpener. My father-in-law gave it to me for Christmas 20+ years ago!
You can also use the groove to sharpen fish hooks.
It could probably also paddle the boat in a pinch, just don't let go of it in the water.
The leather pouch can also be used as a strop. It's likely roughed for such a reason.
Clever
The suede gives it more traction so if you're using the stone flat like a bench stone, you can lay it on the leather pouch and keep it from sliding around. They used the same set up with the dual sided "Double Stuff" sharpener. The stones actually work surprisingly well like that. Best of all, it's a simple solution to a real issue.
Why is the end scalloped instead of just being two angles? Is there some advantage to being supported at only two points instead of sitting on the edge?
With two resting points you get a statically defined rest. With a line contact on a plane surface this is only achievable by deforming one of the contact partners. And if they are not soft enough it will always tend to wiggle.
Thank you for this review. That thing seems to be a brilliant product. I just ordered one.
I know it's an old comment, but this sharpening ceramic stone, is designed for woodcarving tools. Those tools that people who carve on small wood pieces, those small forest spirit figures etc. This is the sharpening system for those kind of tools. Many companies make a their version of it and all have the same triangular shape and different surfaces, to touch up all the different wood carving tools, that come with round or triangular etc edges.
In my family's kitchen there's always a sharpening stone from at least 3 generations ago, usually more rough and cheap than this but I'm thinking it could fulfill the role quite properly
There are a lot of details that go into its manufacturing. Great product.
Could you review the “Byrd” duckfoot ?
I have an old set of ceramic rods I use as an in between the KME and strop. I like the looks of the Golden Stone but I do think the price is a bit high. When you figure out new ways to use it do a tutorial please... Good review!
The leather sheath can be used as a strop too...
I initionally bought the Golden Stone because of this review, 2 and a half years ago. I work in a kitchen, and find it works a lot better than the standard steel rods that we have laying around. For touching up knives, it is an actual system! After a rewatch of this video, I'm suprised that Nick never mentioned how the leather sleeve is perfect for stropping here and there. Just an opinion...:)
HAVE BOTH AND LUV THEM! THE GOLDENSTONE IS BRILLIANT. Sharpmaker stays at home, goldenstone is in my EDC bag that goes on my boat every day. DANG, I've watched many a video here and all are so goofy.
You ain't missing nothing in michigan right now btw. Thanks for showing this off. It may go on the ole xmas list.
Looks like a good piece of kit.
Personally I use a worksharp field sharpener for all of my sharpening since it's pretty small cheap and versatile
I use that then follow-up with the double stuff. The addition of the double stuff made a big difference, and doesn't add any noticeable room or weight to my pack.
Isnt the pouch also a strop?
You can also put the stone into its sheath and use the leather as a course strop. The stone supports the leather...and bingo you have a table top strop
Should have called it the "Ghost" sharpener
Or the Scary Sharp
The Golden Ghost that's actually white? :D
You can use the leather case as a strope
@nick sweeney I have the first flat stone with square case works well as strope gets dirty but good leather
I very much doubt it. Stropping leather, from my experience, should be pretty firm. Even with compound, soft leather seems pretty ineffectual. I'm no expert, though.
I have the stone, and the case is kinda more of a felt then leather. Doesnt work for stropping
you can do a light strop on the leather...
The best tools are the ones you USE. I use this all the time - keep in kitchen drawer for those knives also. As Nick pointed out great for softer steels. This is the only tool you need for Victorinox and Wenger blades and many other makes as well.
Inflation is roughly 2 to 3 percent rise every year. Sounds about right to me.
@@pedroordepo9860 Not with biden in office.
Favorite review, ever.
“If you wanna go awl in” 😂 amazing
This seems like a nice design.
Looks efficient. I have a ceramic rod that keeps my kits away. This ducks foot has its place.
😂 I got a bit of a “B-roll” association when Nick started setting up the Sharpmaker. It is a lot of work...see?...can’t even get these strange copper things in 😂
How much and how to order
Still on your 💎quest like a trusty Gomer Pile trooper.
Nicely put and educating for such an odd ugly golden 🐥foot.
Caught the great tip to use the tip of Sharpmaker stone for rounding off the unbroken edges on spider holes. Thanks!
Good review
I can make knives dull, but sharp I don't know about that.
Ooof! This thing is 100€ here! You can get a number of ceramic sharpening rods from IOXIO or the Sieger Long Life for half of that.
I always look for your reviews before making a. Purchase
Me too.
Yup.
Looks like a nice ceramic rod is less clumsy.
Love your reviews. I liked knives as a kid, in my sixties now. Recently purchased a Reate J.A.C.K.
I have lightly used it so it doesn't need sharpening yet. I am unsure of its angle and am hesitant to sharpen it myself when the time comes because I'm afraid I'll make it worse instead of better. Not sure what sharpener I should use either. It'll likely never need much to keep it sharp. It's M390, if anyone with knowledge would like to pass along some advice. Thanks.
You might use the sharpie trick (see my KME review) to find the right angle.
@@NickShabazz Great. Thanks so much.
thank you nick sweeney and something wicked...
@@NickShabazz Just watched the KME review. At the very end you mention that the knife, if very thick, might have trouble being clamped. Do you think that would be the case with my Reate J.A.C.K.?
@@NickShabazz do you still use the Golden Stone or is there anything that’s replaced it for touch-ups in between sharpening your blades?
Hey just a heads up the angle you were using on the Rat was not shallow. Looked more like 30dps to me. Not hating just wanted to point it out. Love your vids keep up the good work
I dont have anything to sharpen knives thus i know nothing about it although i think i need this
Benson Downey I'm not a great sharpener myself, but if you're interested in knives, it's a very good idea to invest in sharpening systems or stones and a strop, and learning how to at least touch up an edge.
Benson Downey this isn’t a good sharpening tool it’s a good thing for touch ups I would recommend learning how to freehand
How do you keep you're knives sharp then.....free hand really isnt that difficult you can get a good edge just by simply apexing the blade. You want to get 20 degrees? Set your edge at 90dg tilt the knife spine half way between the stone and where it is, you have 45, do it again you have 22.5 drop it a couple mm more you have 20dgrs. Simple and takes a couple seconds
Please don't. Get the KME system. See my post, above.
Get a kme and a strop and get the best edge you can get imo
Nice minimum gear to have in the woods...allows you to keep the same angle on blade on blade with minimum gear.....
wish they made it out of the medium grit it would be much more useful
Slide the Sharpmaker stones into rubber tubing if you're concerned with chipping. Yes its a bit more to deal with...but its worth it in the long run. Clean the Spyderco stones with Barkeepers Friend cleanser. You're welcome.
Where do you buy it?
Golden stone or sharp maker? I don’t have any other sharpeners I need one I pretty much only use Spyderco knifes and I would like a sharpener I can take with me camping I feel like either one I could
Josh doe I'm not Nick, obviously, but I'd recommend learning to sharpen freehand if you think you have the patience. It's not as difficult as it might look and opens up a whole world of sharpening stones. Spyderco even makes ceramic pocket stones in medium and fine grits that sell for 18USD on knifecenter.com and also come with leather pouches.
CSharp im sure it would be a lot better I’m just super ocd about my knifes so not sure if I should try learning on them. How easy/ difficult is it to mess up a knife freehand sharpening compared to using something like a sharp maker
Josh doe When I started learning to sharpen I didn't even know guided systems existed so I just taught myself freehand watching videos and reading websites. I imagine it would take some effort to actually Ron a knife while sharpening freehand, as opposed to using a belt grinder or something like that. If you color the edge bevel with a sharpie so you can see when you've the right angle and go slowly, the risk should be very low. I'd you've got a Walmart near you, you can buy one of their $4 Ozark trail knives (or a similar cheap gas station-type knife) to learn on.
"Cut, rock, cut, rock, cut, rock..."
From now on I'm going to refer to my sharpening stones as "Cut Rocks". 😁
Nick it seams like a decent field sharpener, if you have a lot of Spyderco knives...
Jeez the puns I can't handle them 😂😂😂
BTW I purchased a ZT 450
Was pleased the blade centering was spot on and the blade was sharpened properly; almost as though The Apostle P had for the deed.
Will be my edc.....
Thanks again Nick
Got me a Golden Stone and it’s just great
Quick & easy,
I know this post was a million years ago but still stands the test of time
Nick, could it be stood up on its side and used that way? Does that give you a good angle? Get what I mean?, like on its side long ways. Lol, hard to explain what I mean. But it looks like it could be a thing
Seems easy enough. Shouldn't scare anyone due to complexity I realize it has to be removed from leather pouch as it isn't a strop. Should be great for anyone and especially anyone with a lot of Spyderco's.
You got to me with that is he on quack
Finally another sharpening review
Brian F
Did you mean to comment on the video not reply to my comment
@@bp-hx9ts Yes. Sorry about that .
Brian F nothing to be sorry about man you didn’t do anything
I wish this was called the “Spyderco Duck Foot”
I thought the same thing when I first saw it, " That's a duck foot!"
Byrd has a product named “Duckfoot”
Would buy both in conjunction with each other !
I was given one as a gift...but there's no way I'd spend $100 for one. It's also fragile and will break if you drop it.
I prefer and will continue to use the Lansky Diamond Turn Box at a fraction of the cost.
They are $65 on Amazon right now and I'm thinking about grabbing one but yeah for $100 I'd stay away
I can't get around the awkwardness of having to rock the thing side to side and reach around under your top hand to sharpen the second edge backhand. That pretty much screws the goose...er, duck..for the idea of simplicity.
Cool review and while I like the idea behind this, I would prefer to just use my ceramic rods, which are much cheaper.
This lasts forever though that's kinda why its priced so high.
@@jakehansen3418 Yeah, thats probably true. Im sure it will last forever and will have excellent quality, as it is Spyderco. I get pretty excellent performance, from the sharpening items i have, but having options is never a bad thing!
@@darthblade2016 yah i mean either or I bought one to use for field work it's just easier to use on the go and perfect for keeping a working edge.
@@jakehansen3418 👍👍👍🔪🍻👍👍👍
Could fasten a snap button to the opening to keep the pouch closed.
Anybody ever told you that you almost have the Peter Griffin voice ?
and so on and so freakin forth @ 2:47 ha ha ha
🤣🤣😂😂🤣 im not even sure if i watch your reviews for the gear or just the puns !!
@nick sweeney well. Yes!!
@nick sweeney wait for the belt review!!
The voice
I use a diamond rat tail.
Awl in. Oh god it hurts!
Well, i suppose it does seem kinda quack and easy.....take that Shabazz
Sold! 🤷🏻♂️
They call it the duck foot in the catalog 😂
This is worth same as a ceramic plate not a cent more
Golden stone... duck foot. Gold duck! From Pokémon.
quack
60$ omg its gone up in price a lot
surely the sharpmaker is better ????
I be happy to pay $60 In europe i'ts $110 ish
Hey Nick , you just sold out that stone for the next 6 month's. LOL.
😂 lol IG Selfie!!
Quackers.
Goodness Nick, you need to deload that strop. FYI, they make CZcams videos on this very thing.
“Down, Down, Down, Down.......”
Why not just sharpen one side until you get a burr, then switch to the other side snd then strop off the burr and micro bevel your edge? They now want $70. for this one-trick pony. Buy a Shapton 500 Glass stone ($50.) and a King 1200 ($50.) and freehand away to shaving sharp. I'm not a fan of ceramic stones because they cut hard steel really slowly.
Love the stupid puns. Lol
its 70 bucks i repeat 70 friggin bucks i could see 35
It looks like a duck foot.
God of metaphors lol
