      Mine lasted 5 minutes, hit the grass and ripped the tail rudder off. Doesn't seem to have replacement parts available. So I guess I paid almost $100 for 5 minutes of fun.
      I would recommend buying something with replaceable parts.
      I'm really disappointed with this product

    Because of y’all, I “flew” and “landed” (lol) an RC plane for the first time today. I’m normally into drones and bashers but I snagged a Volantex Mini Trainstar on sale just to see if planes are as fun as y’all make it look. Despite the 10mph winds, I chunked it into the wind and instantly became hooked. I hope you guys continue the beginner series. It’s been very helpful. I’m definitely buying the transmitter you recommend when I’m ready to graduate to the next level. Thanks so much for your excellent, entertaining, and educational content. You guys are awesome. I’ll be supporting y’all in some way soon.

    Nice review of a nice beginner rc model aircraft that is also fun to fly. One thing: primary altitude input is throttle, not the elevator. One of the first mistakes in flight training is not understanding controls rotating the aircraft about their respective axes and the primary role of thrust. Another is keeping aileron input in turns resulting in too much roll. And, of course, not coordinating rudder in turns to prevent slipping and loss of lift on the wing. Each plane will have its own peculiarities which require learning how to accommodate them. Old USCG HC-130H and HU-16E driver (and "frustrated palm trees", i.e., helos), sends.

    My daughter and SiL gave me a Champ for Christmas last year. It was the first fixed-wing RC I ever had. I flew it that day, sort of landed-ish (no crashing but I had to walk a few lawns down to retrieve it). One day last summer, I took it onto the circle. It went vertical, then it came down vertical. 10 or 12 feet, I reckon. Landed directly on the point of the nose cone. Did not even flinch. I thought I'd ruined it, but it didn't even need repair. Now I have 10 fixed wings (give or take). I still can't fly them to save my life, but I'm gonna get there. :)
    Oh, and I didn't realize the right stick handled the rudder and elevator. That's unusual. Gotta remember it.

  • @saxmanwwjd
    @saxmanwwjd Před 4 lety +1

    Nate the wings are concave shape which will only produce lift when the plane is upright. If they are turned upside down then you will push the plane into the ground as you have found out during this video. Thanks for all you do. Have a great evening

    I'd like to thank you two saylors for this video. I watched this back in late may (2020) and ordered it that night. I have to say it was the best money I've spent on recreation in a long long time. I flew it once for about 6 or 7 minutes then charged the battery and flew again for about 8 minutes before losing control of it due to too much wind. It ended up in a tree but I did get it back the next day. I enjoyed those two flights so much I went right back to hobby zone and ordered another plane or two....smiles. Thanks again.

    I taught myself to fly with a Champ! It was a long learning curve for an old newby! I got a lot of walking exercise! I still fly it ocasionaly if I've had a long layoff from flying! I don't unferstand why they discontinued it. Near everything is now unafordable!
    And I hand launch EVERYTHING with my right hand! Trimming for proper flight is the first thing the newbie needs to learn. Mine porpised badly out of the box!

    People may not be aware that the Champ RTF has hi/lo dual rate capability . The transmitter defaults to high rates , but you can switch to low rates by pushing IN the right transmitter stick . That could be helpful for beginners who tend to over-control .

    Glad to see the little Champ getting some exposure. I've had mine for years and still bring it any time I go to the field. In the summer we have thermal contests with them to see how long we can keep them in the air. It has no bad habits and anyone can learn on it. Spare parts are available and it's light enough to take rough landings in stride. Thanks for turning more people on to this amazing little plane.

  • @leonardodahumanoid4344

    I bought one of these as my third plane. I put about 125 flights on it. The last flight was in too windy conditions and a gust stopped it cold about 12' off the ground. It stalled and smacked the ground hard enough to break off the rear stabilizers and controls. It's fixable but l now have the blue 4 channel Cub waiting to be flown. I hope to have the same success with it as l have with this plane. I highly recommend it for beginners.

    I didn't learn to fly with one of these micros, but I did get proficient on one. It was almost exactly like that one, and only weighs one ounce. I say weighs because I still have it 10 years later. Makes a big difference when you crash. I recently bought a big 1200mm trainer, and that 2 lb. bird comes in fairly hot. You won't cry giant tears for days if you crash this. Easier to fix as well.

    Great little plane, and I too love the colour! :-)
    When beginners get this plane and also get extra batteries for it, they must understand that you shouldn't fly back to back: this plane has a brushed motor, which needs to cool down (about 10 mins) between flights to prolong its life-span. Flying batteries back to back will eventually burn up the little motor; letting it cool down in between flights will increase the motor's life expectancy.

    Love the informative videos. Watch them all of the time.
    I teach newbies to fly.
    Have used the champ some.
    But mostly train on my 4 year old Apprentice. After flying my Apprentice they usually get a minie Apprentice or sport cub. Some opt for the champ. But I always explain with the champ you need a calm day. While the Apprentice will handle wind much better. Although flying the champ on a windy day is a blast if you have fairly good skill. And as I tell my students our hobby is the only one where you need sunscreen for your teeth. Because you are always looking up and grinning.

      Hahaha!! I love that iceman! Need sunscreen for your teeth, lol! 😂🤣👍⚓😎 Good advice on progression. I think we will be heading mostly in that direction as time goes on but we wanted to start with almost as cheap as you can find, to show that basically anyone can enjoy this hobby despite financial limitations.

    on this one or the mini Mustang. They both seem so easy to fly

    • @TheRcSaylors
      @TheRcSaylors  Před 4 lety

      They really are both very easy to fly. Honestly, you cant go wrong either way. Mini Mustang is cheaper, has more batteries, but can handle more wind. This one will have faster shipping, most likely.

    I'm going to be watching the rest of your series but I'm having a hard time not buying this little guy before I do. I can afford more but man that hits a lot of the things I was looking for in purchasing my first plane. I'll have to see what I may be missing out on with the more expensive stuff but this seems like a great place to start.

    Interesting. I have this plane from the original release probably around 2010 or 11. The charger was the type using 4 double A battery that so many of the UMX planes had. None of this fancy USB stuff. I Bound it to my old DX& took it out just last week and flew it for the first time in years. Love how it flies. It sucks that It's no longer available.

    After becoming proficient then possibly bored with punching holes in the sky yanking and banking and loop the loop try this; At the park Get some roofing paper and lay down a 30 foot strip of it then weight it to the grown with some short pieces of steel reinforcement rods on the edges for a runway or landing strip. With Some club member participation say like two three, or four or five members or what ever makes for great competition for landings take offs and even touch and goes and simulated ground attack approaches by chalking up you wheels and leaving a wheel mark on the paper indicating a hit score on the runway. Keeping score makes for great competition and improving basic flight skills as well as encouraging fun for even the most jaded pros. and yet encouraging beginners. especially at this price point for a simple to fly aircraft.

    Best first plane!! And tough! I crashed mine on a horse barn roof in the winter. It blew off later in the day and a snowmobile ran over it. I found it the next morning half buried with only a cracked wing. Some glue and a fresh battery and it flew again.

    Due to the wing configuration as well as it being a high wing, about the only way you can fly inverted is if there is a little breeze. Fly with the breeze at altitude and pull back into a loop. At the top, press forward on your stick and hold it, but it has to be directly into the wind. If wind comes from the side, it will cause you to roll out.
