@@the_rachel_sam Not so; KFC-style coleslaw doesn't really smell though I think most other coleslaw does. I also think corned beef and cabbage smells delightful, but maybe the potatoes and carrots we add to it at our house, as well as all the corned beef's spices, counteracts the normally smelly nature of cooked cabbage.
That said, kimchi is supposed to be fragrant, not stinky, so I wondered at first if maybe the coworker was just a bad cook... and yes, I facepalmed when it was fettuccine alfredo. Maybe she thought she should ferment that too?

@@NotAFanOfHandles I should have specified cooked cabbage! A lot of slaw doesn’t have a strong scent to me, either. I just mean that for cabbage in particular, when we cook it, we usually go nose-blind. It’s very different being the person cooking cabbage rolls, southern style cabbage and pork, etc., and being the person that walks into the house and smells it for the first time lol. I also don’t think it “stinks” but it’s a strong scent. Kimchi gets it scent from the fermentation of the cabbage and the various fish-based ingredients that can be used, so it’s also a strong scent.

Adoption can cause some pretty bad mental health issues for the adoptee. Especially when they are from a different culture. It causes them to feel disassociation to their sense of self. The common advice is to help your adopted child to still feel connected to their culture. Even if they themselves don't remember it.
You also have to consider that adoptees often get hit with the "you should be thankful for us/them saving you". Additionally, people who act sweet around others can be horrible human beings in private. You never know.

Funnily enough, I have a personal story to the rotten food story:
My great-aunt (my grandma's older sister) lives alone after her husband died, and she's starting to go off the rails mentally. She's started stockpiling incredible amounts of perishable foods for some reason. She's got like 3-5 fridges filled to the brim with half-frozen, and decomposing meats, dairy, fruits, veggies etc. She complained that the fridge is broken and melting down because there's a puddle underneath it, but it's just the rotting juices of the things inside. She had accumulated like a large garbage bag worth of rotten eggs, some of which were so rotten they litterally burst, then dried out, and only the shells remained. When my grandma (her younger sister) asked her what she was planning to do with all this, and why she kept hauling back cartfuls of groceries, spending thousands of dollars, she answered she would eat it. My grandma challenged her to eat a rotting, mouldy yogurt, and she did. She's also very paranoid, no one helps her anymore, all the taxi drivers, delivery guys, government healthcare workers avoid her like the plague, because she's throwing things at them. She's also acting like a small dog who doesn't want to go to the vet, because she's scared that if she goes to the doctor, they'll rule her mentally unwell, and remove her from the home. (Mind you, she's not fully capable of taking care of herself - e.g. she doesn't bathe because she can't - and she doesn't allow anyone in her house to help). She's a hoarder, her house stinks, everyone hates her because she's a mean crazy old lady, and refuses help she actually needs and demands you help her with her crazy ideas, like asking you to drive her to shop for more food.
It's a proper trainwreck, and she does everything in her power to resist every attempt to put her back on track.

BUT what the OP did and the way they said it in the first story is honestly so great. It was really polite. My sister told him not to eat it, and my brother who was visiting them also warned him to not eat it because he had a case of food poisoning in the past which wasn't fun at all. They finally convinced him to throw it out, but damn, if you can't smell that the fish was rotten before you cook it and how horrible it smells when you're cooking it, then trust when you have two other people telling you it smells bad. @@FederalBurroOfInvestigation I remember reading somewhere that people with schizophrenia can have strange taste in food as a side effect, and it being after covid maybe she can't smell too well to begin with? I'm not sure, I'm not her doctor, but taste and smell ARE connected so 🤷‍♂️

She is not schizophrenic or bipolar. Do not put that type of label on someone because it paints a bad picture of people with those mental health conditions. She's just a shitty person that got exposed to a big lie and is acting like an entitled brat.

      @FederalBurroOfInvestigation Před rokem +1

@@silverhowler999 that's it? I'm over here thinking a bit more and am like oh, "well maybe one could see her as delusional due to the whole acting like she used to live in Korea, and was raised by her birth parents - or the whole assuming OP thought her food was Korean and that's why they didn't like the smell thing" since both can involve psychosis. They do both also have associations with mood shifts that are abnormal. Then again people lie to make themselves look better all the time, fully knowing it's not true. I can at least see it a bit more now that I've thought about it, but I still don't know that'd I'd call her either of them.
Who knows, though; I'm definitely not a psychologist, just a person human brains confuse sometimes, including my own.

Years ago my desk was 20' from the break room. We had a lady that would microwave her seafood leftovers about once a month. One day I wasn't feeling all that great to begin with but microwave seafood was just too much. So I put in a bag of microwave popcorn and set it for 5 minutes. Burned popcorn is not as bad as the seafood stench and it does cover it effectively.

Story 1: When I read that title I was worried I'd get grossed out, but that took more turns than a rollercoaster! As somebody who is learning to cook, I can tell you it takes work to make things smell that bad.
    Story 2: "Sucky Acer Laptop"
Me watching this video on one: Confused confusing confusion.
All jokes aside, it was really nice to get a sweet wholesome story , knowing this subreddit, I half expected the girl to destroy the PC and call OP stupid.
Story 3: I kinda wish OP had gone to the wedding, that would have been a whole other "Bestof" update.

Wow! Story 1 ended up all over the 🗺️. Glad I waited for Dabney to finish the story before making any comments.
Yeah, I'm about as white as white can be but, having a Korean as my best friend in my teenage years, I developed a taste & appreciation for Korean food - especially genuine homemade. One of my favorites was Kimchi. His mom used to tease me about making an Americanized batch since I couldn't handle the heat of her traditional recipe 😂.
That's what I thought it may have been when OP commented on smell. Before having my first experience with Kimchi, my friend told me "If you can get the smell past your nose, you'll love it". He was right. 😋

My aunt lives in a townhouse in São Paulo and has a neighbor of Korean heritage. My family and I lived in Brazil for several years and stayed with my aunt a lot. She told us that sometimes, her neighbor would cook something and it would smell horrible. One time while I was there, the neighbor cooked one of her special meals and it smelled like someone put a stinky foot in my face. I couldn’t escape the smell even when I went outside, so I can’t imagine sitting in a small room with that food. One day, my aunt asked her about what she liked to cook and her neighbor said that one of her specialties was burying a fish in a pot with a particular type of soil and to dig it up after a certain number of days and cook it. I think that maybe that was the inescapable smell. I went to South Korea for 2 weeks in college and I wasn’t bothered by the smell of food there at all. It sounds like the coworker was looking for a fight and bringing in the foods with the strongest aroma possible.

First story sound very relatable. I would ask OP if they suffered a head injury of some kind in the past. One long term side effect of a head injury is heightened sensors (taste, slight, sound, smell, touch). And Smell is one of the hardest to get over, like the rest can become manageable due to a level of controlling the senor, but smell is not. One common smell that does come across as vomit inducing is fish, OP mentioned a tuna sandwich and I wonder if there is a connection there and they appear to be the only one who mentions the smell, not any of the coworkers
