the gameplay grows on you. there is a large item shop that happens at certain points, so there are many weapons and addons to try out, and getting point rewards you with buying power.
a unique mechanic in the game is that you can backtrack for a certain distance. just keep going down, and the screen will start scrolling downwards. i havent seen this in any other shooter that keeps scrolling forward otherwise.
Great music and addictive gameplay this game was a part of my childhood.

Also it’s funny how you mentioned the Megablast music being good once you turned it on. It was composed by British dance group bomb the bass and the mega drive version is poor. Listen to the Amiga version it’s excellent and was a highlight of the game for me.

It’s a shame it doesn’t include the Amiga versions of these titles. You’d have a better opinion of the 1st Speedball if it did. That looks like an 8-bit console version - Master System. Bitmap brothers liked to use licenced music in their games, the also used Betty Boo's "Doin' the Do" for Magic Pockets which, if I remember right, was the first time a licenced song had ever been used in a game.

The problem is they are all console ports and not the amiga/atari st originals. Speedball is the master system version which is abysmal and the other games are playstation/mega drive version which are just worse versions. This is what lets the evercade down as it tends to use inferior ports I can get anywhere where as getting the Amiga/Atari ST version is much rarer as they are much more difficult to emulate I guess. It is one of my favourite games of all time. I just love the soundtrack, it hasn't aged a day in nearly 30 years! It's a pity that out of the 5 available games on the collection 3 of them are Speedball. Don't get me wrong, I love Speedball 2 but the included Mega Drive version isn't the best. I understand why Blaze chose the console versions over the Amiga ones, but still I would much prefer to have the Amiga versions.
Hopefully there'll be a Bitmap collection 2, which will include Gods and Magic Pockets - if Blaze can find a way to successfully convert Amiga games. If they can manage arcade ports now, they can manage Amiga ports :)
