    Chris, Bex, if "Wombat" had a new and heavy base plate welded on to reduce the requirement for ballast, why have you got all that ballast? Wasn't the new base plate enough? Is there an optimum draft for the size of boat? What happens if you block-up those drain holes? Are they no longer used? So what replaced them? Sorry for so many questions but you are the subject of discussion and debate between me and an old shipmate of mine who now lives in Arizona, where all they've got is desert!

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Pƙed rokem

      Oh amazing ,glad we can be a conversation piece, the holes should leagaly be 7inches above the water when I looked I to it but we're obviously we're lower now because of the base plate the holes sit lower, I think there fine if there connected to something but to just have some of them open on the inside is quite dangerous I think, so we will have to put new ones in when we know we're there going to be needed, I'm bot really sure about the ballet situation..I would probably think we wouldn't need ballest as it sits very firmly in the water compared to other boats.. but we noticed it had ballest so thought it must be there for a reason, someone did tell us you still need it along the sides to keep the boat stable however heavy the baseplate is, so we've part taken some out, but may end up removing more if it seems OK, thanks for your questions 😉

    • @terryhoyle7043
      @terryhoyle7043 Pƙed rokem

      @@TheNomadicCrobot Thanks for the prompt response, I'll tell Arizona Pete. Think it best if you get those drain holes blocked-up whilst you have a welder to hand. Just run some water down the sink/shower/basin to see which ones are still in use. You already know which one serves the bilge pump. Might also be a scupper for the well deck? Maybe your Surveyor could advise on ballast needs? I think autumn's approaching 'cos there's a nip in the evening air. Stay warm and happy blacking.

I really hope it brings you great peace of mind and confidence to carrying on with the refurb. I must say for all your inexperience the jobs you both have done are really brilliant. You should not be looking as he is welding. He should have told you that. He’s fine with the full face protection. It’s called Arc-eye, or welder's flash, it is an inflammation of the cornea, caused by ultraviolet radiation from the arc during welding. The sufferer is usually unaware that they have been significantly exposed until several hours later. It is very painful and can cause real lasting eye damage.
    I hope you are both ok. I have had it lots of times while welding just getting a flash for a split second, it feels like your rubbing sand into you eyes. Hope you are both ok 🙏

    Hey guys,
    So glad you’ve had your survey and got your bottom blacked. It means lots more wonderful videos for fans like me.
    I can’t wait to see Becca’s lovely counters and what other uses Chris can find for the TITAN.
    You may already be familiar with the guy in the link below, but I swear he must be a distant cousin to Chris!

    When you take an (old) boat out of the water, you always discover things that need mending. Our boat is from 1992 and she also always needs some things fixed when she goes out of the water. Anyway, better to have the boat checked every few years than to ignore maintenance and then suddenly find out the boat needs massive works to stay afloat. Sail safe !
