Him not going deeper with the malwish and bands plot is a valid point. however i never expected him to go too deep into those points in this era. My theory is that it sets up nicely for the next era to be a cold war spy thriller between north and south scadrial with the bands being part of the nuclear threat.

(Mega-spoilers for the book) Regarding Wayne and the whole death trope, I think Sanderson recognized he had written himself into a corner with that trope, so he embraced it in-universe. Even his characters were like, "No! Wayne's not dead! He's Wayne!" and then Brandon double-and-triple downed on proving that yep, he's dead dead. dead.

  • @alvir3486
    @alvir3486 Před rokem +64

As a note on this not feeling like the end of an era or not like a whole era in itself. Brandon Sanderson makes a point of saying in the acknowledgement of "The Alloy of Law" that Era 2 is more of a side story, and that Era 3 is more of the grand epic second era on the same scale as Era 1 was.
from "The Alloy of Law" acknowledgement:
"The plan then was for a second epic trilogy set in an urban era, and a third trilogy set in a futuristic era-with Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy being the common threads that tied them together.
This book isn't part of that second trilogy. It's a side deviation, something exciting that grew quite unexpectedly out of my planning for where the world would go."

I feel like the "Wayne seeing Harmony and passing on" -scene was there because it's a definitive way of showing that a character isn't coming back.
In the Lost metal release event, Sanderson joked that people keep telling him that 16 books would make a lot of sense for the Mistborn series, and if he was to add a cyperpunk era, he could get there. But in the same breath he said that there is only so many books he can write, so it's far from confirmed.

I like the idea that the Shards Intent corrupts absolutely. In the case of Preservation, that corruption lead Leras to being completely unable to even consider doing harm. I think the sad truth is that Sazed (as we knew him) is gone. He's now just the vessel for these two Shards.
I also believe that we saw the final slip into Discord right at the end of TLM when Kelsier could no longer see his dark shadow, however, I don't believe Discord is evil. I think Discord will still be sazed, however the Intent that guides him will be more unified rather than Ruin and Preservation fighting eachother every step of the way. Also because in the terris prophecies it says something like "His name shall be Discord and they will love him for it". I don't think Discord will be a villain, but a more callous hero.

So....I have options on who drained The Bands of Mourning. And my opinion is I don't think they were drained at all, I think they were swapped. They're a forgery and we're going to get another Mistborn Secret History for era 2. Kelsier says that Shai is his best agent, and Shai is known for making forgeries. I think the Bands of Mourning were swapped between books without the kandra's knowledge.

I think the feelings are the flaw of this being an accidental era two. It’s really more “Mistborn: Wax and Wayne” than it is “Mistborn: Era Two.” As far as being a story about Wax and Wayne, it concluded things nicely. This almost feels like something that would have been written as a midquel after subsequent eras were already out. So it’s a question of expectations. I don’t see it as an era the way the first is.

31:25 Discord isn't really a theory so much as a prohpecized part of the narrative that is definitely going to come up whether that's in Era 3 or 4. Discord with a capital D (capitalized words like that are significant in the Cosmere) is something mentioned in the Terris prophecies which we see in an epigraph of The Final Empire. That epigraph also just so happens to be at the beginning of the chapter where Sazed is introduced (Chapter 8). This is something that will continue to be a through line with Mistborn.

As someone who only read era 2 TLM was really good. It wrapped up all the storylines, gave a reason for the South coming out of nowhere with The Bands, gave a reason for Harmony to have Larasium and Atium available, a good Wax and Wayne story, shining Steris moment, and a good reason for Dazed and Kelsier to have some tension between them at the start of Era 3. And if it is true what was said online, that Era 2 was meant as 1 book interlude that became its own Era, all the things I just wrote could be explained away in "The Time Skip," but I stead we're getting what happens in the time skip, which is cool.

It’s meant to be an advance on all the enormous shifts we’re about to get in stormlight 5, leading to pure investiture being transported across the universe for money by shadesmar and perpendicularity. It wasnt even originally going to be a series. He decided to make it a catalyst. 10 years from now when we aren’t so critical because we can look back on his next few books, we will see that he was setting up the general audience to be shocked in the greater world opening up that’s about to happen.

On the point about the Bands scene, I don't mind it as much, and that's mainly because of me relating to Steris's point of view.
I'm also autistic, so when at least Steris let the ambassador go, her dialogue about focusing on the current crisis makes sense. After all, she's busy dealing with at least 2 stressful balancing acts right now - project "be the front face of House Ladrian" and project "figure out solution so everyone doesn't die that will work with stupid politicians". Adding project "prevent ambassador from walking away with Bands without outright starting a war" to the Priorities list would've been too much at that time. Letting him walk out was the simplest solution - it was important enough to try based on the word of TenSoon, and they did agree, and it would at least delay a war, so let's let him go and then focus on the evacuation. As for the other Basoners, I figure they're amenable to listening to Steris and TenSoon at that point, and both are letting the ambassador go. Plus they ARE empty, what are they going to do with them?
Also I didn't catch that Wayne was going to die from the prologue. Of anything it was him calling himself a dead man throughout Part 1.

53:50 I completely understand that frustration. However, because there are so many ways in the Cosmere to either cheat death or to prolong your life or to survive things that most readers would assume are lethal it is very hard to have a final Death for a character without actually seeing them stretch into The Beyond or have some other kind of poetic death scene (There's one in particular in Stormlight that I'm quite fond of). At least in my opinion there aren't very many examples of a death fakeout being used in the Cosmere in an egregious way. Most times it stems from a lack of understanding of the magic systems or the world itself. So the fakeout serves both a narrative purpose and as a way to introduce new elements of the magic system. Just my 2 cents

And Waynes scenes from the boat onward were such bitter sweet tearjerkers. He was so proud, He was at peace and deserved so more.
*Stormlightspoilers ahead* I cried more for wayne than i did for Teft and Kal. (Also there will never ne a wayne meets lopen 😞)
This Book has Taken a dear place in my heart and is easily Top 3 in the Cosmere. Cant device if it is above or below WoR, but HoA will Stay at Number 1 for now.

So, I have only read the Mistborn books. I haven't read any other Sanderson books. I was honestly a bit worried when I heard that other Cosmere stuff was going to be in this book. That maybe I wouldn't understand it due to this. Thankfully, it wasn't a problem for me. While reading, It kind of felt like seeing an easter egg in a movie, and knowing from how it's presented that this means something to superfans, but isn't vital for you to understand. I still had a lot of fun and went along with it, but i would say it diminished my enjoyment a little, since i knew i was missing out on something. I'm glad i had heard this tidbit before though, bc otherwise idk what i would think when those characters suddenly show up.
I was gifted the original mistborn trilogy by a friend a couple of years ago, so i had no idea what i was getting into when i started. When I realized after looking stuff up after I finished, I was a bit overwhelmed when i found out it was a large universe that all intertwined. I get that there's so many people who enjoy the complexity of this universe and analyzing/studying it, making theories, etc; but that's not me. lol. I want to just enjoy each book as it comes.

Quadrilogy/tetralogy is the correct term (Or 'a' correct term I guess. Doesn't really matter what you call it.) for a set of 4 works. The 4 original Alien films are considered a Quadrilogy and were marketed as such when they released the DVD set. I'm sure there are other examples, but that's the main one I can think of from pop culture.

I really enjoyed Era 2 and TLM conclusion a lot. Bands of Mourning is def my favorite of the era.
Something you discussed was the way Sanderson went full Cosmere and “taking the gloves off” with this book and how it could not function that well for people who just read Mistborn. As someone who is fairly new to the Cosmere there were parts that were a bit overwhelming and confusing. I really don’t know too much about shards and world hoppers so I did feel that all the references made me a bit distracted from the Era 2 story. That said, I still felt like this could be read on its own but I’m sure it would of been more appreciated if I was caught up to everything.
That said I love Sanderson and am excited to keep diving into the Cosmere.

  • @Hawkuro
    @Hawkuro Před 20 dny

Michael is right, the correct term is quadrilogy. In English it generally goes:
Duology (Or a "Dilogy" if you prefer greek prefixes)
    Trilogy
Quadrilogy (Or "Tetralogy" for similar reasons as above)
    Quintilogy
    Hexalogy
    Heptalogy
    Octology
    etc.
The "-logy" in this context means "narrative", so "Quadrilogy" is just "four narratives (forming a whole)"/"a narrative in four parts"
Duet, Trio, Quartet, Quintet, etc. are just groups of 2/3/4/5 etc. people (mostly) or things. You can technically call a quadrilogy a quartet, but the former is more specific and accurate.

I just started reading Mistborn in September and marathoned books 1-7 + Secret History, I knew that the series was part of a connected universe but know nothing about Stormlight or Elantris, and I felt really excited about all the crossover stuff and didn't feel like I was lost at all. Kelsier just showing up with a new crew was pretty crazy considering he was still just a shadow at the end of Secret History. I am really looking forward to Stormlight now, and Tress was incredible (so far Tress is my favorite book of the 8 I've listened to). I'm starting Emperor's Soul tonight and find all the hype around that book intriguing.

Great discussion. Think I fall more on Merphy's side, but think everyone brought up valid criticisms while acknowledging the strong aspects of the book. For me, I thought the plot was fun, and I enjoyed the cosmere tie-ins, but the well written character arcs of every major character work really solidified this as a five star book for me. The emotional beats hit really well in this book and I think this is the strongest book of era 2, though I still prefer Mistborn Era 1 and SA.

Don’t know if that makes total sense but it’s obvious Sazed is struggling, I think it’s unlikely Sanderson ends up making him a full villain, and Ruin just suits Kelsier so, so well

Re: adaptations: Not only did Sanderson mention he wrote a screenplay treatment with only a single scene from the book, he said he felt it was _better_ in a lot of ways than his other attempt that stuck much more closely. Presumably the final product will be more to the middle of the spectrum, but he's not afraid to diverge massively, it seems. Curious how it'll turn out...

I think the main source of people from other places in the cosmere will continue to be the ghostbloods or other world hopper organizations which i think sanderson could just be able to treat them kinda like super hero teams, have them just be special characters that come into play every now and then, and if you want to know about them you can go explore the other books to get lore kinda like how alot of comic books do it

The things with the Mawlish feeling so rushed is definitely a feeling I had coming into the end of the book. But on reflection, and with a little bit of foil wrapped around my brain, I feel like Era 3 isn't going to be as much as a jump as Era 1 to 2 was. In fact I have a feeling that Era 3's MC might end up being Max, with a focus on the Basin vs The Southern continent as the backdrop.

The bands of mourning(filled with pure investiture) are set up as a weapon to be used by the southerners. The northerners are going to get Mistborn, with continued trellium/harmonium experimentation. This works because aluminium is going commonplace.
The time jump's purpose was primarily to show the speedrun of technological advancement, which implies that the 1980 cold war stuff in not THAT far into the future. We're likely to see the Wax and Steris kids in ERA 3, along with head of state Marasi. This would place Era 3 during the same timeframe as the later stormlight books, which seems appropriate.

My interpretation of Discord is that it's not Ruin superseding Preservation. I can imagine more of it like Ruin and Preservation having more opportunity to do their own thing instead of being forced to work together to the point of cancelling each other out and stagnating the development of the world. It was hinted at in some Terrisman text in Era 1. I think it was said people would be thankful for Discord or something

I am one of those few whose only experience with the Cosmere has been Mistborn. In fact, I didn't even know about the Cosmere until I was almost done with The Bands of Mourning when a couple of my friends told me about it. At that point, I felt I was too invested in Mistborn to read the rest of the Cosmere first, so I stuck it out and read The Lost Metal. There were times when I felt I had no idea what was going on and was getting bored, like during the parts where Twinsoul (assuming that's how it's spelled, I listened to the audiobooks) was talking about stuff outside of Scadriel. But other than those moments, I thoroughly enjoyed the books, especially since Wayne has been my favorite character since book 1 of era 2.
