To me, Age of Madness is Abercrombie at his very best. Stellar character development, skillful incorporation of themes, visceral action, and his best female characters by a mile. It's awesome to hear your thoughts, Merphy!
This is my first First Law book and I got very attached to Orso/Savine pairing, completely clueless and i can tell you my heart was shattered by the reveal. I was not okay.
Glad you love A Little Hatred. I identifed with Orso so much in that book, I felt like Joe was commenting on my decision making as a young man. Abercrombie is amazing.
This was just an awesome spoiler chat, and I’m right with you about caring about all these complex very human characters, and even the romances. Glokta is indeed a good and endearing dad! Can’t wait for the next spoiler chats for the sequels!!!
I was about to complain about the _absurdity_ of a vlog channel doing a review, but upon further inspection, I see this is officially a review channel. As you were.
Merphy! I am nearly certain my comment will be buried, but I just want to say THANK YOU! Thank you for your channel and for gushing and ranting about books and inspiring me to get out of the 5 year reading slump I have been in post uni. In 2022, I went from maybe reading 8 books a year since 2016, possibly ten if I was feeling particularly uninterested in what was on the telly, to reading and finishing 70 books! One of these books was The Lies of Locke Lamora, for which I must give you an extra special 'thank you' because I loved it and I never would have even heard of it were it not for you. I cannot wait to continue the series this year! I so appreciate everything you do here and I wish I had the funds to be a patron because you deserve all the patronage in the world. Happy reading in 2023 and thank you again!
A Little Hatred is SO good, but I'm excited for you to read the next two because you'll realise that this book is just set-up for what's coming... I was not ready for what this trilogy did to me.
I just read this, my first Abercrombie book, and…this is a sequel series?! Sorry for my ignorance! I had no idea! I absolutely loved this book! Can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy, and can’t wait to read the first series too! Holy moly!
I'm excited to see you going through Age of Madness. Best Served Cold was my favorite until Wisdom of Crowds. This is definitely the better of the two trilogies.
Wisdom of Crowds was my favorite book of 2021 and nothing in 2022 came even close. At this point Abercrombie definitely is the modern author I trust the most and I'll buy whatever he puts out. I love these characters so much, especially Orso.
I know who the OWL is!!!! try to avoid looking for explanations on prophecies, but there is a website that goes thru all the prophecies and their outcomes
When you talk to it the beginning about how some other seems you just continuous series for the sake of continuing it to make money and not because they had more stories to tell reminded me of something I recently read about Piers Anthony. He was talking about the number of Xanth novels he wrote. It wasn't necessarily because he had more to tell it because it was the only thing his publisher wanted him to write because they made money. Anything else they would turn down
I’m slightly ahead of you…finished The Trouble with Peace in December and starting The Wisdom of Crowds at the end of January. TTWP was my favorite Abercrombie book yet…masterpiece.
I've been re-listening to these books (Yes, I'm one of those; I started reading with THe First Law trilogy and that was PHENOMENAL and Steven Pacey does a GREAT job portraying EVERYONE in those books as well) ... and Age of Madness is just phenomenal. It's so good. You basically summed up a lot of my feelings about this book in this video, so great work there xD Thank you so much! I already miss Wonderful again. :|
Also, for those coming to A Little Hatred (Age of Madness) directly from The Last Argument of Kings (First Law Trilogy), I'd highly recommend going back and getting some of the good juicy brain foods that are Best Served Cold, The Heroes, Red Country, and Sharp Ends. Sharp Ends has story bits that fit throughout the previous 3 titles, but you can read it after and it works just fine.
The Age of Madness trilogy keeps not only the stellar character work of the previous books but also makes the world and its social issues way more interesting.
I’m so glad I read all of the stand alones. When a little hatred came out I really wanted to read it cuz so many people said it was so good. But I was also made aware that’s it’s a sequel trilogy but you can still read it without reading the first trilogy or stand alones, and I almost did. But I sucked it up and read the first trilogy and the 3 standalones + sharp ends and man was it worth it. So much shit that happened in this book wouldn’t have felt nearly as impactful. Its a weird thought to me that anyone who jumped into a little hatred first didn’t know Savine and Orso were related until Ardee told Savine. I was all Icked out for the entire time wondering when and how they’d find out. I figured it woulda been Glokta that found out and then would intimidate Orso lmao
Glad you loved this one! I think I’m in the minority but A Little Hatred was my favorite of the sequel trilogy. Trouble with Peace and Wisdom of Crowds are great but A Little Hatred is 10/10 for me. I don’t think anything will top Last Argument of Kings and Best Served Cold though
If you haven't seen it, Merphy has an interview with Joe Abercrombie on the other channel from a year or so ago. It's one of her best interviews imho. You might get a good feel for where to start from that. :)
I’m mid re-read of the full series, and I’d say The Blade Itself is the best starting point. You CAN start with the Age of Madness books, but there’s enough world building and back story you’d miss out on it wouldn’t be as fulfilling. Plus, from my perspective, the books actually get better and better as they go so it gives something to build on.
I loved the age of madness so much, I think its some of Joes best work! Orso was amazing and probably my favorite character in the whole of the series! I hate leo sooooooooo much, he just doesnt get it smh
To me, Age of Madness is Abercrombie at his very best. Stellar character development, skillful incorporation of themes, visceral action, and his best female characters by a mile. It's awesome to hear your thoughts, Merphy!
A Philip x mike’s book reviews x merphy Age of Madness / Joe Abercrombie discussion would be *chefs kiss*

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Would love to see it :)
Yea, you said female bc she is a hot female. Don't do that.
Wrong! Monza is still the best!
I reread Last Argument of Kings an it totally foreshadowed Jezal death. Bayaz literally tells Jezal he might just not wake up one morning dead in bed.
Wonderful death was surprisingly hurtful. She's such a minor character, yet Joe makes us feel it anyway.
Steven Pacy reading the audiobooks is amazing.
This is my first First Law book and I got very attached to Orso/Savine pairing, completely clueless and i can tell you my heart was shattered by the reveal. I was not okay.
oh no! I can't imagine going through this as your first book. I'm sorry for the pain you were put through 😫
I had the same problem T-T. i felt so bad for them
Yep, the closest we'll ever get to Abercrombie writing "romance", I was all about the Savine/Orso pair.
@@matguerra333 Red County has also some romance, kinda a happy ending
Omg I hadn't even pegged Zuri to be an eater!! I just finished this book today. Really excited to start the next book!
Glad you love A Little Hatred.
I identifed with Orso so much in that book, I felt like Joe was commenting on my decision making as a young man.
Abercrombie is amazing.
To be fair, Clover wasn't prepared for himself killing Wonderful 😂
I was laughing at "That's not ok Joe!"
Glad to hear the Age of Madness isn't disappointing you!
isern-i-phail is the secret best character
This was just an awesome spoiler chat, and I’m right with you about caring about all these complex very human characters, and even the romances. Glokta is indeed a good and endearing dad! Can’t wait for the next spoiler chats for the sequels!!!
Orso is my fav character of all time ! He only gets better 🥰

I’m with you on Orso and Savine, I hated how much I wanted them to be together.
Vick dan Toefful also has amazing arc, all of the women were so well written
A Little Hatred is SO good, but I'm excited for you to read the next two because you'll realise that this book is just set-up for what's coming... I was not ready for what this trilogy did to me.
I legit couldn't put this book down for the last 150 pages that shit was crazy

Abercrombie is 1 of top 3 authors for me, hoping we get another sequel series
I loved A Little Hatred, and just as you said, it was awesome seeing the old cast every now and then. Great review!
This is one of the very best reviews I have ever watched! You said almost everything I thought of. Awesome!👏
I am so looking forward to being off tomorrow and binging these videos!! 🎉🫢😁📚😊
Wow surprised you just got to this one. This whole age from Abercrombie is fantastic
I loved this book! I just gave my copy away to a friend for Christmas. Might go buy it again..
Thanks for this! Can't wait for you to review the rest of the series. 😄
I love this book but Trouble with Peace man it was the best 😍
Wisdom of Crowds was my favorite book of 2021 and nothing in 2022 came even close. At this point Abercrombie definitely is the modern author I trust the most and I'll buy whatever he puts out.

Yayy!! I have been looking forward to this!!
Looking forward to your thoughts on Trouble w/ Peace; which is my favorite of the 3 AoM
This trilogy stuck with my for a while I loved it!! Didn't think I could like this more than the First Law books but damn it I might!
Haven't read this book yet (will soon) just came to leave a like
Will comeback to this once I read the book, it's on my list😁
Orso leading is.... very interesting 🤣

It just keeps getting better, definitely the best Abercrombie series
Orso is such a chad.
The Age of Madness trilogy keeps not only the stellar character work of the previous books but also makes the world and its social issues way more interesting.

Funny, for me “Best served cold” was BY FAR my least favorite.
What are your thoughts on Vick, Broad and especially Leo?
Yep, the closest we'll ever get to Abercrombie writing "romance", I was all about the Savine/Orso pair.
The Trouble w/Peace proved to me, Joe Abercrombie is one of the greatest authors of all time. This whole series slaps.
I was tricked by your thumbnail. I assumed you didn't like it lol
Haha! Sorry, it’s more of a “Joe made me breakdown a bit”
@@merphynapierreviews "That's not okay Joe!" Just applies to basically everything the man has ever written, but we still love it
@@merphynapierreviews Lol! It's all good. It made me watch the video and five mins in I calmed down 🤣
Hold on, when was the first reveal of Savine being Jezel’s daughter? I thought it was when Ardee told her? Did I miss when it was revealed earlier??
It happened in the previous trilogy. In Last Argument of Kings, so people who read it and remembered it knew from the start.
I honestly don't think Zuri is an Eater.
I loved my cute disaster closeted bisexual in that book.
However the one I'd like a drink with was Orso.
I really need to start his books. Which one would you guys recommend starting with?

Just start at the beginning, read in order.
Super simple.
Does Logen have a daughter? I had not remembered that.
It’s in there
I loved Orso so much it isn’t even funny. Also Joe said “he/she barred their teeth” at least 75 times
I loved the age of madness so much, I think its some of Joes best work! Orso was amazing and probably my favorite character in the whole of the series! I hate leo sooooooooo much, he just doesnt get it smh
also he totally becomes a better man, the best!
You care about a romance? Joe has broken you, lol!
