      Merphy, I loved your analysis of Harry's view of Murphy. You're coming up on a point where you'll need to start reading the short stories, probably after "White Night". The two short story collections are "Side Jobs" and "Brief Cases". Also what did you think about Harry, Lucio, and Corpse Taker?

    • @mtverv
      @mtverv Před 8 měsíci

      Yeah Merphy Napier I’m not a big fan of you judging Harry’s own Internal Thoughts and then just letting Karrin’s Conduct in that opening scene go with a simple “well it sounded like he wanted to tell her not to go.” Yeah NO! I am not a Karrin Murphy fan (which I will explain more as you go further into the Series) but Karrin is absolutely and needlessly Cruel here. Giving her all the credit she is due as she isn’t just a really solid Administrator and all around good Cop she is also a Top Shelf Detective. It’s also been a full year since Blood Rites where you admitted (rightly so) that Harry’s feelings have changed when it comes to Karrin. Now there is absolutely no way that Harry “Heart on his Sleeve” Dresden didn’t give away those feelings at some point to her in that year, looking from a Watsonian POV. Now knowing these things we can safely assume Karrin knew of Harry’s feelings towards her and how they have changed. Her going to him right before she goes off on a romantic vacation with another Man (which due to Harry’s Shock at the news can also be inferred that Karrin never told him she was Dating Kincaid which is another Piece of Evidence to her Cruelty here) with the excuse to ask him to “water her plants”?! Are you kidding me? We just met her Family in the last Book! Even if she is still having issues with her Mother and Sister there are her many Murphy Brothers, Cousins, or her Co-Workers at SI she could ask to do something so relatively small. As a Man if a Woman I both Respected and Had Feelings for treated me the way she did by both acknowledging my feelings and rubbing in that she doesn’t share them in the same interaction (and she doesn’t feel the same way about him otherwise she never would have taken up with Kincaid to start with) it would effect me just as much if not more than it effects Harry here. Then he has to spend the entire Book blackmailed into putting everything on the line for the Woman who just did that to him!!! Harry Dresden is a Damn Saint and I will brook no argument in this…
      Other than my issues with Murphy in general but the Opening Scene in specific there is a reason Dead Beat is my 2nd Favorite Book in this whole Series after Changes. It really is that good. Yeah I never saw the Shiela twist either lol. POLKA WILL NEVER DIE!

  • @DirePantsDim
    @DirePantsDim Před 8 měsíci +81

    "...No. And do you know why?" He shook his head. "Because Thomas is too pretty to die. And because I'm too stubborn to die." I hauled on the shirt even harder. "And most of all because tomorrow is Oktoberfest, Butters, and polka will never die.”
    My favorite part of this book, 11/10.

    One of my favorite parts of this book is the reveal of how powerful Harry has become, and how nervous that makes his friends sometimes. The book is told in first person, so we only real see Harry as he sees himself - a bumbling, middle aged man just trying to get his bills paid and maybe do some good along the way. But everyone else? They see a 6 and a half foot tall demi-god duking it out with vampires, werewolves, faeries, and literal demons whilst chucking around fire and lightning like they're his personal toys. It doesn't happen often, but seeing that crazy contrast is one of the more memorable parts of the books.

    Butcher does an excellent job taking Dresden from a low-level character in a simpler, black-and-white world to a high-level character in a complex, shades-of-gray world.

    Yeah, it really is hard to top riding a zombie T-Rex through Chicago in a storm, on Halloween, to battle a trio of necromancers and their armies of ghosts and zombie to stop them from creating a Dark God. But Butcher keeps doing more and more insanely awesome things. Yeah, this is pretty much where the series has fully found it's footing, and from here till Changes it is a non-stop race of epicness.

  • @ghjong001
    @ghjong001 Před 8 měsíci +62

    I think this is the first novel where Harry loses literally every confrontation he's in right up until the end. Every fight ends with Harry not just losing, but being so completely outclassed that he either has to run away, get rescued by his allies, or both. We've seen Harry in over his head before, but Dead Beat really sells us on the peril being way past the usual level. Corpsetaker getting inside of Harry's head outside the bookstore was an especially creepy section because of how it's described in first-person, with Ms. Gard flat out telling him later that he was "meant" to die in that alley. When he's being tortured by Cassius, we know from Harry's own narrative that he's literally given up and thinks he's about to die. Harry being unable to use fire even while surrounded by zombies and he really needs it... and then he steps outside and realizes there were too many of them, and he couldn't have won regardless.
    Finally, as a Chicagoan, we are damned proud of Sue, but the best part of that scene was Butters wearing the polka suit in a plot-relevant way... and then, off-camera, apparently handing it over to Morgan while Butters helps the Wardens. I'm just picturing Morgan in the polka suit, and it's beautiful.

    Even if you find Shiela suspicious, this book is all about an unknown number of necromancers being in town. A perfect red herring. I immediately thought Harry's first instinct with her was correct, when he pulled a gun and his shield out. But I also assumed she was a kemmlerite or working with one. Then she turned out to be something way less predictable, and way scarrier. It's one of the best twists ever.

      The audiobooks are so great. The first few are a little rough since Marsters wasn't used to narration but once he finds his stride, oh boy, is he a goddamned fantastic narrator. When I first started listening to the books, I was like "Oh, this is fun, Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer is narrating this!" Now, when I see episodes of Buffy, I think "Hey, that's cool, Harry Dresden is playing Spike!" To me Dresden is Marsters' defining role now.

    I know you would not get to it yet, and actually it may be hard to find. There is a novelette, set between Small Favor (Dresden Files #10) and Turn Coat (Dresden Files #11) that is written from the perspective of Thomas. Back in the 1990’s PBS did a show on the man who found and excavated Sue. I don’t remember the details, but somehow the government took Sue away from her first human home. That show, and Sue, stuck with me ever since. Then, Butcher did an interview where he discussed seeing the PBS special and how he added her into this series. That was a sweet bit of trivia. I feel like this story was written especially for me, and everyone else who couldn’t forget Sue’s story.

Before this Harry always understood he was hated by the council as a whole but in that line of, "They're not Harry Dresden." he gets a true look at the fear many hold and even some of the admiration some other hold for him. One of my single favorite lines from this book.

    If Harry's descriptions bother you, try Butcher's other books - you'll quickly see that it's Harry's descriptions, not Jim Butcher's.

    With the way you talk about how Jim Butcher writes the attraction of characters and descriptions; I'm super interested in when you get to a certain point in the next book. Rubbed me the wrong way, even if it "doesn't go there".

    WOW! I can't express how happy I am that you are reading the Dresden files. I think you will eventually love these kinda like you did with One Piece where you missed a lot at the beginning and had to go back. Jim does an amazing job, like Oda, with foreshadowing and just telling a compelling story. This book is THE book that sets the series off. I can't wait to watch what you have in store for you, they only get better from here!!!!

    I'm kicking myself for not realising sooner that you're reading Dresden Files. So I'm a bit late to the party here. But there are two things I want you to know about this book. One is Polka Will Never Die: PWND.
    The second is that I have watched quite a few recordings of Butcher at Cons. And he likes to tell stories. One of them is about this book. It was his first hardcover. Which means it had to serve as a possible first book for people.
    And that is why Butters is the companion this book. He is new to the supernatural scene, so he can be the newbie that needs everything explained. And he is thematically apt, being a coroner and all. And as a huge bonus, he is of no help whatsoever in a sticky situation (Butcher's own words, or close to it).

    I've read the whole series, and this is my personal favorite. It doesn't even have my two favorite characters in it, but it has a lot of my favorite scenes. The explanation of the vampire hunger, the scene where Dresden is riding Sue, and so many others are so amazing.

    When I went to Chicago last year (from Europe), I specifically put multiple locations from the Dresden books on my list of things to see. Sue was on the top of the list! And Millennium Park, after reading Battleground.

    Yasssssssssssssssssssss I was so happy to relive the book through this spoiler chat, it’s definitely a standout favorite from the first 10 for me. The Lash reveal was incredible, and the final Sue action scene is just one of the coolest ever.
    I really appreciated how Dresden was so steadfast in encouraging and caring for Butters throughout the book, it was very touching that Harry just didn’t leave him behind or dismiss him like Thomas did. And then with a little push, Butters did do things he never thought himself capable of 💪

    Sue being mentioned a bunch was extra innocuous for me since I already knew of her as the Field Museum's big Tyrannosaurus from my childhood dinosaur phase 😅

    Dead Beat is definitely in my top 5 books in this series. The next one, Proven Guilty, is also excellent, also in my top 5, I hope you'll like it enough as well to do a full length review on it similar to this one!
    Also I love your stego bag. A lot of people grow out of their dinosaur phase but I think those people are boring, I'm 40 now and dinosaurs still kick ass!

    Re-experiencing the books through your blogs has been great! Dead beat is for sure one of my favorites of the series. Butters is fantastic. I love how Butcher kind of slowly teaches us how necromancy works across the book, like needing the beat, and the age of the bodies, and the power of the zombies, so that it all culminates in the Sue scene and not only is it totally badass, but it's completely earned and feels like, "Why didnt I think of that, of course thats the perfect solution!"

    Keep these reviews coming Merphy! I said it in the non-spoiler review, but this is the Water 7 of The Dresden Files where you begin to see the scale the author is working with and the story just grabs you.
    In regards to how many crazy things Butcher packed into this book, his editor implied that if he did well, Dead Beat may be the first Dresden book to be published in hardcover. So Jim went HARD.

    I like westerns and Harry trading punches with Cowl outside the bookstore was a very western moment. The adversaries Harry faces in the book were really well done. Corpse taker was grade A creepy and Lash’s demonstration of her capability to manipulate was off the chain. Definitely a good book in a good series.

    Harry's dad appearing is 100% legit. He says "the scales are being balanced", by that he means that now that Lasciel is acting (Hell), he can appear to help Harry (Heaven).
    You only "get" that once you finish the novel. Or, if you're like me, on your third reread.

      @@peterepeatepete2845 I think that's Butcher's rationale for why the curse. But I don't think the dying Cassius had enough background on Harry to have come up with that curse. And if he's of a mind to go that direction, 'be unloved forever' would seem to have more immediate and long-term effects. Of course, who knows what's the limits are on a death curse.
