Adam here. This video will contain minor worldbuilding spoilers from early in the book.
Maybe a link to Mark's channel would be appropriate 😉
🙏Thank you Brandon. For everything. Especially Hemalurgy.
Thx
It was fun! But you need to put a disclaimer that there is some minor campiness. :)
ty, have to avoid all as im a noob to the BS world. i will finish mistborn book1 before february
Sanderson:
“I love goofy magic systems.”
Also Brandon,
“let me prove my magic systems with science!”
😅
It's that pinch of realism that really sells you on it.
Science can look pretty goofy sometimes haha
💯🔥🔥
One foot in science, one foot in fantasy
Mark: "I like your thinking! Fluidization is a great idea for a magic system!"
Brandon: *starts explaining about spores, vegetative explosions, hinting at the depths of his imagination
Mark, internally: "Oh, he's kind of a mad science wizard, isn't he"
This guy has made himself so much more than just an author. Great writer, but also a fantastic business man without trying to screw his fans over for every penny. Nothing but respect.
Even better he is actually trying to make things better for both the creater and the consumer
Its truly inspirational. History in the making thatll ripple through the industry for ages to come.
He is one of the best businessmen ever
Don't forget great teacher too!!! I went to BYU and enrolled in Brando's writing class.
A good business is when the consumer (or fan) pays for something and gets some value for their money, it can be either material value or sentimental value. Brandon Sanderson checks off both.
Brandon and Mark in the same video? a crossover I never though I would ever see.
I know, right? Mind officially blown.
This feels unreal
Era 4 has some wild stuff in it for sure!
The crossovers are so intense they are leaking into the real world.
Mormon Mafia yo
I was so confused when I turned on my CZcams and saw this, it was crazy
This is so damn cool! Now I just want a full blown Cosmere science show.
Hi, today we're going to look at the science of Chasm Fiends. For this episode we have bred a 10m tall Praying Mantis....
@@bruceh9780 LOL IRL
I'm sure Hoid would love to host
Surely the host would have to be Khriss....
Oh hello other channel I’m subscribed to!
Pulling Mark into this is ultimate world hopping.
If Mark is a World Hopper, I'd guess Fat Gus was his teacher.
Brandon talks about his book like an excited fanboy. That joy is contagious and why I basically finished the book and immediately started it again. Just so fun.
Oh, absolutely. He very clearly follows the golden rule of writing: "Write something that you would want to read." And you can easily pick this up in his writing and in his interviews and lectures as well. He has so much fun with it and in turn makes us as readers have fun with it. Even if you don't care for fantasy, you just have to respect him as an author.
Videos like this are just anohter reason why Brandon is the best author out there.
Dang I'm cheesing over this cross over. Just finished Tress, and it's honestly one of my favorite books in the Cosmere so far. The world was just so cool!
Same!
Tress is also a fantastic ordinary protagonist. No hidden magic powers, princess lineage bs. Just winging it and outplaying everyone with earnest determination and wit to hilarious effect.
@@DandDgamer Wit? Oh yeah, he was there too.
@@DandDgamer personally, i thought doug made for a fantastic foil to tress.
@@zakay_ Which Doug? Or all Dougs?
Brandon is my favourite science youtuber.
Watching Mark Rober walk into a Brandon Sanderson video was surreal. At the same time, I was constantly imagining the things I saw in Mark's video on fluidized sand when reading Tress, so this really was the perfect combination to describe the setting.
+1. Also hearing the Mark Rober music playing over an official dragonsteel promo at 11:58 really messed with my head, but like in the best way
I mean... I knew Mark's gonna appear as soon as the camera backed out a bit. The golden play button with "Mark Rober" on it kinda gave it away :D
@@D3emonic I didn't notice that until after - I was just cruising along like "Why's he in a workshop?"
@@Avilister Right, makes sense. For me, the room was so out of place considering where his videos usually Are shot so I couldn't help but observe the room. When the camera panned out the CZcams button caught my attentiont cause I was like... I know Brandon's channel is sucessfull for ther niche it's in, but isn't a golden buttn for like, a milion subs? It would be nice but I don't thing Brandon has that many. So I examined it closely and noticed the name. Now, mind you, I still freaked out when I realised who's joining the video (cause, why else would you shoot it in his place, right?), just a little bit earlier than most I'd guess :D
Agreed!!!
The fact that you two are mutual fans makes me like you both just a bit more. I think we need a squirrel obstacle course in your next book.
Squirrel knight radiants!
Or maybe a rat instead of a squirrel
Squirrel Mistborn obstacle course
Nutborn!
An awakened squirrel obstacle course
Ok, I know this is very book-specific, but can we please have MORE Sanderson-MarkRober crossovers?
This was so fun
I love how excited you both were on camera! It looked like Mark was trying so hard not to go full fanboy, and Brandon got so excited about the worldbuilding like he wasn't the one who came up with it. It makes me so happy to see creators like this so genuinely happy about what they're doing.
Nerding out and watching like an excited child, seeing what you envisioned become reality in your hands is so endearing. Like "this was in my head. And now it's here! And somebody appreciates my vision! Eeek!"
Last December my friend and I discussed the odds of Sando writing a swashbuckler. I said it wouldn’t happen because Sando didn’t know how to write about water. I see he’s found a clever work around.
water? you mean spore? is probably what he said to the editor
He did a pretty good job with Dawnshard in terms of sailing and what not but that wasn’t a full blown swashbuckler.
Considering the amount of research with fighter pilots that went into the skyward books, i don't think "not knowing how to write water" would stop him if he really wanted to
@@birdyfeederz7940 It may be more fair to say that Sando doesn't like writing about water. Its a foreign concept to him. I have a whole soapbox on the topic. This doesn't lessen my enjoyment of Sanderson, rather as a lady of lakes I find it funny.
@@MeMySkirtandI I've never heard about this before. Is your soapbox on the topic in a video you've done? I'd like to hear more
Unexpected and awesome collaboration. Mark was the first person to introduce fluidisation to me and cool to see the inspiration
Agreed!!!
Next Sanderson side project: a world that involves obstacle courses for squirrels and jello pools
@@birdyfeederz7940 With Fat Gus as the protagonist.
I was recommended this author recently by an English teacher, bought one his series (Mistborn, already through the original trilogy and almost done with The Shadows of Self from the sequel series, they are SOOOOOO good) and now I find him doing a collab with Mark Rober? This is amazing
NO WAY MARK ROBER! what a crossover episode 🤯
There’s a fluidized ocean in some of the Dark Sun novels. The sea is made of salt, and there’s giants who weeds through it and crash human ships with their hands. It’s a Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting. I think the series is called the pertinent passage really cool series from what I remember.
The crossover we didn't know we needed. Can't wait to read and review Tress.
Can 10/10 recommend the book!
Of all the twists Brandon has provided me, Mark Rober showing up out of nowhere is the most unexpected
This!
not the 4 secret books out of nowhere?
@@ConfusedRambutan writing a ton of books? Very sanderson-esk.
Collaborating with a scientific CZcamsr? Less Sanderson-esk.
@@kalanittaub2579 fair enough
They went to the same alma mater, so there was probably some comradery when they did the video.
Two grown men playing in a sandbox. I love it! Fantasy and science at its best.
The best part of this video (other than the most unexpected and amazing CZcams Collab) is how delightfully awkward both Mark and Brandon are in their own ways.
They're both so excited but have such different styles - Brandon is used to long shots and lectures, while Mark is so polished. Loved seeing them chat and be slightly out of their comfort zone, yet could never have asked for anything more.
Seeing Mark and Brandon together was amazing. Two of my favorite creators.
I don't think I've seen you this happy on camera before. This is one of your best books
This is the crossover that I needed. I love this. I also didn't know that Sanderson was once a chemistry major. Very cool.
Sand by Hugh Howey explores this idea! The characters don’t sail massive ships but they dive like free divers using fluidization. Always loved the visuals of it
I came to the comments to mention this, too.
We need more episodes of ‘Brandon makes up something seemingly impossible and Mark makes it real’
Holy crap! I literally was thinking "too bad Mark Rober isn't here" and two seconds later he walked through the door. Looks like Brandon is upping his CZcams game!
I've been watching a lot of Mark Rober videos with my kids, so the workshop setting made me think of him right away.
Building magic around real actual observable science is amazing. He's able to inject SO much wonder into something that is relatively mundane once examined.
I just Finished Tress and I am fascinated seeing this AFTERWARDS.
As I was listening to the audiobook of Tress of the Emerald Sea my first thought went to Mark Rober's experiment when the sea was first described. It is awesome to see two absolute legends come together in this video. Sailing on a sea of fluidized sand spores is such a brilliant idea full of possibilities. I can't wait to finish the story.
I love how excited Brandon is explaining how he adapted the science into his book. You can really feel the sense of wonder in the book that he has writing it
If you search TV Tropes for Sea of Sand there's actually a good few examples of similar worlds to Tress's. But my favorite example is probably Children of the Whales where people live on an island that floats through an ocean of sand.
Two of my favorite people in one video! Almost Heaven.
Stuff like this is why Brandon is a GOAT
I was not expecting to like the book as much as I did. I've read pretty much the entire cosmere, and it's honestly in my top 5 cosmere books of all time. I really liked it
I just finished the book and was wondering if Brandon had seen Mark Rober's video on the subject, I guess this answers that
Brandon Sanderson and Mark Rober at the same time??
This makes me SO HAPPY!!! 🤩
Mark Rober and Brandon Sanderson: the team-up I never knew I wanted, but now can't live without!
We learned about fluidotherapy in my occupational therapy program as a form of heat therapy to help people with hypersensitivity, pain, stiffness, amputation pains/sensitivities, or certain musculoskeletal disorders. Super cool to see how it works and that Sanderson utilized these ideas into his magic system! Excited to read Tress and the Emerald Sea once my copy is available from the library (current wait is 'several months'😓)
So what kind of Occupational Therapy setup exists using fluidotherapy?
@@danielcreviston9867 It's more of a "preparatory" method to help reduce symptoms in their extremities that limit a person's engagement in daily activities, probably more likely to be seen in a hand therapy clinic. So an example is that, let's say a client has osteoarthrosis in their hands and has pain, stiffness and limited movement, preventing them from using their hands functionally. A session might start with using fluidotherapy using a machine that heats and swirls the particles to help with relaxing the hand, improving movement, and reducing pain, and preparing it for doing an activity in their OT session that is part of a person's daily life that they use their hands for, such as meal preparation or brushing their teeth or something. So it's not a cure for anything but might help a person prepare for a session by reducing symptoms and, hopefully in the long run, the person gained more strength and movement in their hands and adaptations to activities through therapy to make daily activities more manageable.
Sorry that was a long explanation. Hopefully it kinda makes sense! I've only recently graduated from my program and have not used fluidotherapy in practice (my interests are more so with autism and mental health than with hands and physical rehabilitation) so this is based on my knowledge from school.
Do you do eBooks at all? I’d be happy to send you 10 bucks for a copy if you don’t want to wait for the library
@@haldalas wow that's really kind of you!! I wouldn't be comfortable taking your money, but I appreciate the offer! I'm fine waiting for now since I need to focus on my board exam and I know that reading this book will completely distract me and take up all my brain energy haha. Since it's a short book, I'm hoping the wait time at the library will go faster than expected and I'll be able to read it in like 2 months after I take my exam! 😄
This was so unexpected but so welcome! Great crossover. I love that you guys used Mark's ending music for the video.
Honor would be proud.
OMG Mark Rober collection video with Brandon Sanderson!! Fantastic!!!
Mark rober is how I knew about fluidization before reading ToTES. That book is totes good brandon :). And I love marks videos. Glad to see my favorite two creators collaborate!
Love it! In a similar vein, I always loved dune because Arrakis was always based upon real ecological studies of dune environments, and then adding in the fantastical sand worm elements and working out how the ecology would work. I never really thought about it, because I don’t know how worms move normally, but with the movie it was really cool to see them moving by fluidising the sand locally through vibration, giving some great vibrational patterns visually as well for the film. (Though obviously that isn’t how normal worms work, it is a great solution for such a large creature to be able to move that much mass out of the way)
I genuinely am in awe of Brandon Sanderson, and I am just a beginner fan when I read the Mistborn series at the end of 2022 and now onto The Stormlight Archive.
This video shows how much Brandon really thinks about his magic systems, and I love how he shares everything in his videos and in his BYU lectures. Just brilliant.
As a fellow author, Brandon is someone I am constantly learning from.
As soon as Brando announced SP#1 I thought of Mark Rober. Glad you two were able to get together!
Brandon + Mark! Amazing!!! Soooo excited to see this.
as a scientist, science communicator, and fantasy lover, this is the crossover I never in a million years thought would ever happen
This was a beautiful world to learn and explore ❤ loved the idea!
There's a reason why this is my favorite author of all time. And with my favorite inventor of all time. The GOATS of our time.
The crossover I didn’t know we needed
so cool to see this collaboration video, appreciate both these guys a lot :)
I always tell my family about how amazing Brandon’s magic systems are because how close to science they are and how real that makes them feel. This was a great collaboration and peek into the research faze Brandon does to make that kind of book
Holy shit, a sanderson rober collaboration?! This is literally the last thing I'd ever think I'd see on CZcams
I went to pull up a video on fluidization to get a visual on it...and lo and behold, this comes up. An unexpected pleasure to finally understand what the crews see on a daily basis!
unbelievable. Never saw this crossover coming up, even though all I could think of during Tress was Mark's video.
My guess is that pollen wouldn’t work because it’s sticky and even looks spikey under a microscope. Brandon describes the spores as encapsulated so I’m not sure what a real world equivalent would be.
I was honestly expecting a mention of Mark as an inspiration kinda like you mentioned The Princess Bride - thanks for the explanation of you having the idea before seeing the video, but also making this cool connection happen for all to enjoy!
Two of my favorite people I'll probably never meet. How has the CZcams algorithms not brought this to my attention before now? A year after reading Tress, it's cool to see what the spore oceans are supposed to be like. It never really clicked that they were based on the principle of fluidization.
Why was that the best conversation ever to witness
Tress was such an enjoyable read! After this video I can imagine someone wind surfing the spore sea at an incredible speed due to hydroplaning and maybe using a form of magic to help navigate. An awakened sail, possibly Alamancy or even an edge dancer surge binding. Could be pretty fun I think 😂
Just don't fall off the board.
Genuinely one of the most enjoyable videos I've ever had the pleasure to watch on CZcams. Grinning ear to ear through the whole thing. What a duo! Thank you both for making this!
The slow zoom out at the beginning got me. I love Mr. Sanderson
I saw the background and thought, man, is Brandon trying to copy a Mark Rober feel? No, he is just visiting him. So cool!
Bwahaha! Mark Rober was actually exactly who I though was going to walk throught that door. I'm loving Tress btw. So very good.
That was pretty awesome thank you team dragon steel, and thank you Mark so happy you also like Sanderson
Very cool to learn that the video I was thinking about while READING is the same video Brandon was thinking about while WRITING!
this is such an awesome collab
Glad I clicked, wasn’t expecting Mark, he is great!
Brandon AND Mark??!?
Amazing.
Brandon Sanderson and Brian Mclellan are the 2 best authors out there currently.
I was telling a friend about the magic system of Tress the other day and literally pulled up Mark's video as an example of fluidized sand! This was such a pleasure of a video to watch!!
I love both Brandon and Mark so much. I love this. When I read Tress my first thought was "did Brandon watch Mark's video!". Because I know it was out while Brandon was writing it. Keep the creativity flowing with the CZcams channel!
Loved the entrance, "I'm somewhat of a scientist myself"
This is the best collaboration ever... how have I not seen this yet!?
Called it! As soon as I saw the set I know it was a Mark Rober crossover.
It's great that Brandon shares his spotlight. This makes it so rewarding to be a fan of his.
I loved Tress and seeing fluidization in action really brings it to life a little more. The artwork was already amazing but this
What the!!! Mark Rober and Brandon… all my hero’s in one place.
The collaboration I didn't know I needed! That was really fun. Kudos to those behind the scenes who made this happen!
This has to be one of the craziest crossovers I thought I would never see
I did not expect to see this combination of people in one video, but I'm delighted!
Two of my favorite creators of all time in one video
Can we get more videos like this?! This is just fantastic, makes me so happy!
This video is AWESOME! Loved the book and now seeing a demonstration with Mark Rober no less. Brandon and the team, keep on going! You are awesome
Thanks for writing Tress of the Emerald Sea! I absolutely am enjoying my read and it feels cozy! The best book for sitting with a cup of tea near the fire. Highly recommend this book to others and those who are after a creative magical world.
A crossover I seriously did not expect
Looking forward to watching this!
Brandon: Is that aluminum? 👀👀
The greatest collaboration EVER!!!!
Best promotional video ever
The crossover we didn't know we needed. Mark cosmere cameo when.
Do I need to read the book first or will this be acceptable for all?
There are some (minor) worldbuilding spoilers from early in the book!
There are no plot spoilers, just some information about the world. For me this wouldn't have taken anything away from the book.
The Book is awesome. Finished it in 20 days
My favorite author and my favorite CZcamsr in one video?!? Best of both worlds colliding.
WTF!!?!?? MARK FRICKIN ROBER?!?!?!
This is a collaboration every nerd and geek out there like me dreamed of. OMG!!!!
Always amazing when two awesome people who are separately doing great things come together!
The fact that Brandon Sanderson and Mark Rober know each other has made my week.
I think they graduated years apart, but both are BYU alumni
@@mikegillettify It's interesting just how many of the people who collaborate with Brandon on things are Mormon and/or from his same university

Pretty cool that you got that guy on here. When I was reading the book, I googled fluidization and his was the first video I watched too.
