Boston Legal Star Trek references

- Boston Legal is a legal comedy-drama that aired on ABC from 2004 to 2008. The series stars William Shatner in his Emmy-winning role as egotistical and sometimes senile attorney Denny Crane. Also starring in the series is Rene Auberjonois of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fame as Paul Lewiston.
Given Shatner's and Auberjonois's association with Star Trek, several Trek-related in-jokes have crept into the series. In addition, many actors (most having played aliens) who have guest-starred on Star Trek have popped up in guest roles. Trek regulars who have made appearances are Ethan Phillips, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Forbes, Scott Bakula and Armin Shimerman; two actors who make numerous appearances (both as judges) are Ron Canada and Henry Gibson, while Joanna Cassidy had a recurring role as Shatner's love interest. John Larroquette (the Klingon Maltz in ST:III) joined the Boston Legal cast in Season 4, having previously played an attorney, Dan Fielding, on Night Court.

(And yes, I know the last one isn't actually a Star Trek reference, but just hearing Shatner saying "two necks" makes me think of some weird alien creature...) - Zábava
I love that not only does he respond to the word "Klingons" but the way Shatner played it was as if he was having a post-Vietnam war flashbacks.
I think it would of been the greatest thing ever if it was Captain Kirk in the holodeck playing Denny
@@boomer0117zr not possible holodecks didn't become standard Starfleet regulation until about 20 years after Kirk disappeared.
@@brandonangstman why does it have to be so? Star Trek barely makes canonical sense even before Kelvin timeline TOS to TNG the technology retcons are insane. I think the technology of trek has to keep up with the modern day.
@@boomer0117zr it'd be more likley that this would take place sometime during the events of star trek generations when Kirk is trapped in the nexus that grants your hearts desire. I only say that because in the very first episode of TNG they mention that the Enterprise D was one of the first starships fitted with holodeck technology, and that ship wasn't built until at least 20 to 30 years after Kirk disappeared. Your idea still works just not with holodecks, in fact the idea that it's happening in the nexus would better support it since the nexus shapes the reality to fit the persons desires.
@@brandonangstman sure but is season one of TNG the best example of trek if you like it that’s great but for me there are several problematic episodes in season 1
Rene really sounded like Odo when he yelled! He's in the Great Link now RIP
omg the communicator sound when he opens his phone... amazing
"I'm Deny Crane and I commanded my own space ship!" :D
Re the bit at 0:31, that's not the gag. The hilarious moment is when Denny opens the Startac to the noise of a Star Trek communicator - I almost died laughing !
There was even a scene, in Season 3 I think, where Rene Auberjonois (Odo) confront a judge who accuses one of the firm's clients of murdering his wife. The actor who plays the judge? Armin Shimmerman (Quark).
Yes, an they are acting like Quark an Odo there.
Do you happen to know what episode
There were a surprising number of actors who guested on BL who also had connections to the Trek franchise. Scott Bakula was on a couple of episodes. Armin Shimerman, Ethan Phillips, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Forbes, Mark Taylor. Even John Laroquette and Henry Gibson (Outrageous! Shocking!) have had roles in the ST universe.
But certainly not a reference.
@@stevelacker358 Don't forget Paul's daughter is on Discovery S1&2 years after BL.
A law firm with Kirk, Odo, and Seven.
When Spader said Klingons Shatner’s reaction should have been “Bastards”!!
you missed the one where he gets arrested in the gents toilets, he flipps his phone open and gets the old communicator chirrup as he calls for Alan
And I thought Odo was talking everybody else OUT of meeting Kirk. 😂
He will always be the Captain ;)
Rene Auberjonois also played a Starfleet officer in "Undiscovered Country" who was going to launch a rescue mission to get Kirk and McCoy back from the Klingons. It was deleted from the theatrical release, though, and they never shared any screen time.
Operation Retrieve. "We can go in, rescue the hostages, and get out in 24 hours with an acceptable rate of loss of manpower and equipment."
And that character was also in on the conspiracy to derail the peace talks too.
0:41 I was expecting a DS9/Odo reference there.
Ditto. Instead of "deckhand", I was half expecting Denny to say "security officer"!
And they missed two other references, although they weren't really that meta: Armin and Jeri on the show.
+CBunye It's mentioned in the description :)
René Auberjonois really does have that distinct voice, doesn't he?
"Your honor, STOP! *MARTOK's* the Changeling!"
In real life he actually sounds completely different. It's bizarre hearing Rene during interviews and him not sounding like Odo.
@@calhoun24 Or that Paul (Rene Auberjonois) was a "glorified hall monitor of security" (which would also be a reference to his role as Odo)
I love these references they work so well with the denny crane character while giving the nod to star trek at the same time.
there's another moment with the noise of the communicator denny is being arrested in a courthouse bathroom and his phone does it :)
What a missed opportunity to have Kirk talk down to Odo because he's the captain, unless that's what the "deckhand" reference is to
That's exactly what the deckhand fight was about, Denny as the captain, Paul as the deckhand
I didn't know Odo was on that show.
I like to imagine he’s in a holodeck program
or one of the many lives he has lived in the Nexus.
There's a scene where Betty White stops and looks at Auberjonois (Odo) and says "My what an interesting face", clearly a reference to Odo's lack of ability at faces.
No. Not at all. Really grasping there.
@@xlerosx She just happened to say "my what an interesting face" to a character played by an actor who famously played another character in Star Trek who always had an interesting face because he couldn't reproduce a realistic one? Yeah, real big grasp. Not every reference is going to be as straight on as "did you say Klingons?"
@@BardBreaker -- As a big DS9 fan myself...yeah, you're really stretching there. There's no way that was an Odo reference.
@@trekkiejunk meh, they went out of their way throughout the show to do as many Trek nods as they could. Never underestimate the power of nerdy writers.
I love that Walking in the hall, when he tells them about being multi talented
Kirk doesn't like Klingons
Fun Theory. Kirk played an aged 21st century lawyer in many holodeck sessions. The result was Boston legal.
What actually happened is that the entire show takes place in the Nexus and allowed Kirk to live an entire life where he was the most important person in the universe.
And of course the original Daniel Jackson from the Stargate film!
Captain Denny Crane, Denny Crane!
Imagine if the Boston Legal writers had written in a character that included the name Khan, and Shatner yells "KHAAAAAANN!"
The flip phone when opened 😃
Two necks...roaring lol.
I didn't get the neck reference...
@@joelm33 me neither, could someone pls explain it?
okay, it is in the description.. two necks like an alien makes the author just think of Star Trek.. well.. kay..
0:39 Kirk vs Odo (RIP Rene)
What's the song that plays before Denny opens the "TOS communicator" ? Sounds familiar, but can't really make it out.
Time of My Life, from Dirty Dancing
I'm Denny Crane.
1:00 dennycranelaw.com. Pictures, bios, hobbies. I once captained my own spaceship. Muli-talented.
What do "two necks" have to do with Star Trek?
@@starguy2718 Sorry. Still don't get it. And no, I don't hear him doing a Kirk imitation either.
@@LazlosPlane Most likely a reference to the Enterprise herself
Bahaha..2 necks...only denny crane can say that n it be funny
what's the ringtone of his phone before he opens up and makes the communicator sound?
Dirty Dancing- Time of My Life
@@joewinterberry8227 finally an answer
Thanks
You forgot the homeless guy on the sidewalk that Denny Crane shot with a paintball gun,....Alan Shore addressed him as 'Mr. Kirk'.
I don’t believe Star Trek has a two-neck species
He's referring to the Enterprise-F, which has two necks connecting the saucer to the secondary hull. (Ugly, ik! 🙄)
Kirk and Daniel Jackson
was greart show why they took it off the air i never know morons i guess william can play anything god bless you capt kirk denny and others b ward mass
@@benisrood 5 seasons is still a decent run for a tv show and as you say, salaries tend to rise with each season, which means that the show will become increasingly more expensive to produce (not just the actors salaries, but every one else on the show aswell).
Maybe I'm just being stupid but can someone explain the "two necks" joke please?
haha just read the description :)
Vladimir Perić Oh, I gotcha, thanks.
Captain is hardly a Star Trek reference nor is two necks.... people are ....dumb.
Denny mentions having once "captained his own spaceship". Fairly likely Denny never did... but Kirk absolutely did!
You proved your point indeed
Some are dumber than others.
