Always loved Dan's first six albums the best. They went platinum and 2x platinum for a reason. Wife and I have been listening to his music for 46 years. Attended at least 20 concerts, and began dating listening to Dan. Still listening just about every day. Dan was and still is an important part of our lives....and we told him so.

Dan Folgelberg is my favorite artist. Going down the rabbit hole is deep with him. I suffered from depression a lot in my earlier years and he helped a lot. I would listen to his song, "to the morning", as often as I could when I would wake up. Gorgeous song, he said after he wrote it that for the first time he thought he could make a living with his music. Give it a go, you will thank me afterwards. I am that certain.

I thought I loved his greatest hits until I heard In The Morning! I'll be honest. I cried miserably. Bring me a single song in 2023 that is nearly as melodious. Not to talk about the phenomenal lyrics.

I have all Dan’s albums from the start… and while I love the Netherlands album… there are actually several songs on it that I feel surpass the title track!
Once Upon a Time is one of his best songs… Promises Made is great… Love Gone By … Dancing Shoes… Scarecrow’s Dream… all are less bombastic… more to the heart, but with just as wonderful lyrics!

I don't know why CZcams found this for me I appreciate you for playing it. Here's the story behind that song we lived up in Nederland Colorado. Dan had bought a house from Chris Hillman who at the time I believe was with the flying burrito Brothers. Another one of Chris's great ventures was jamming with Stephen stills at his house down the street and at pioneer inn and they formed Manassas. Pioneer inn in Nederland where we all used to hang. Anyway Dan came down to get some guys to move a grand piano up into that house below rollinsville and above Nederland. He sat down and wrote Netherlands composed the entire album over the winter. Man we had some great times back then. I can attribute my piano playing partially from DF. I was just a roadie back then but occasionally when cabins were empty at Caribou we would jam on the grand piano that Elton John used as he composed in several albums up there over the years. Great times. I can tell you the winners were pretty miserable sometimes up there was so much snow those brilliant musicians and composers who lived up there really had nothing to do over the winter because everyone was snowed in much of the time. Stills helped out a lot of peoples cars back then he had a tow truck the only one in town and he would even help the forest service out with it. Steven actually lived in Gold Hill down the road.

Back in the 80s, I took an intensive 2-week college class called "Developing a Professionally Effective Presence." Throughout the class, we were pushed to break through barriers and move outside our comfort zones further than most of us ever had. On the last day, we invited our family and friends for a "graduation" of sorts. A requirement for the graduation program was for each student to do something that really scared them. I chose to sing (a cappella) this beautiful song. I was the last student to perform. Several other students also chose to sing songs that were meaningful for them. I was incredibly nervous as my turn approached, but I managed to muster the courage. There was a lot of noise among the guests: babies fussing, young children talking, people squirming in their squeaky chairs, coughing, sniffing, etc. But by the time I began the second verse, I became aware that all noise had ceased (something which hadn't happened with the other singers). The audience became still and focused, even the little ones. After I finished, I received a standing ovation. I was stunned beyond description! The college videotaped the entire program, so I was able to verify later, by watching the video, that I hadn't imagined it -- it really happened. This gorgeous song has always meant a lot to me since I discovered it on Fogelberg's album in 1977. My opportunity to perform it, and the way it was received, makes it all the more meaningful for me. What a thrill to see you reacting to it!!

The older I get, the more this song makes me weep. And much like Bohemian Rhapsody, the sheer talent, creative genius, and bombastic confidence (in a good way) required to put such a thing on tape is beyond imagination. Long live 1970s music.

Oh, one road was simple acceptance of life

The first DF show i saw was in Knoxville tn. with 13000 plus it was snowing and about 15 degrees. His band could not get there, he had 6 or 7 guitars in a half moon shape and a grand piano in the middle of it. No one opened for him, I was 7th row dead center stage he played for almost 5 hours drank a liter of Jack straight and about a gallon and a half of water. He talked about every song he played told us what he was thinking when he wrote them and recorded them at his studio in his house. You never once missed all of the orchestra music that is in so many of his songs it was totally amazing. His songs always had meaning to me, some have changed with my over 40 years as a fan but meaning they always have. they touch your heart and your soul.

Amazing song along with a fantastic album... This is the album where Dan was living in Nederland, Colorado and was suffering a "writer's block"... OMG! This is the outcome of writer's block? Netherlands (title track) is often misinterpreted, according to Dan himself. The phases "acceptance of life" or "sweet peace" is the duality of life vs suicide. Do you take whatever life throws at you or do you cash in your chips and call it good. Dan believed life was so sweet and precious one should complete the journey. He is greatly missed. Thanks for such a great video!!

First time I heard Dan, I was hooked. I’d gone to a concert back when there were two bands playing-one a warm-up, and then the featured band. 1973 I’d gone to see The Eagles, back before Joe Walsh had joined the group. He, Dan F., opened and if I can recall...he was a singular act, just he and his guitar. He had no band that I remember. But he was beyond good, I could have gone home immediately after he’d played and sang, that’s how fulfilling listening to him was. The Eagles were great, Fogelberg was a surprise hit. The Nederlands was the album he’d just released, and I was so blown away. RIP Dan Fogelberg, you’re a genius!😢. Just because I don’t remember his band doesn’t mean they didn’t play, he was just so singularly incredible.

I'd heard this song first in 1980 in my 20's. Astounded at the masterpiece it soon became what I thought the most beautifully inspired song ever. Recently I lost my wise, sweet, stunningly gorgeous elderly Mom. I thought of this song instantly to honor her at her memorial. In my 60's now I relistened. Quickly I could hear her sharing her experiences of life in the lyrics and music.. The stages of life whether hard struggles or good times, the choices ,struggles, indecisions, decisions and challenges and blessings in all of life we face along with the things we long for, hope for, want, love and desire, the things we see the miraculous in, see darkness and light in, inspiration and faith, and nature and beauty all in the course of life. Listening I imagined my Mom free strong and alive learning to fly and not knowing which way to go bc in a new place and life sharing the lessons, experiences on our beautiful earth. The blessings and trials and philosophical insight that led to choices that led to a well lived life. Also, describing the heavenly glory in and on the earth and in eternity that she now is a part of. My point is when describing the song to siblings to approve the song for the funeral I was deeply shocked that the words you chose to describe this song were identical to my own. We had The Netherlands song in her funeral and it was as if my beautiful mother was speaking her truths even the road less traveled that she chose that led to a life of peace and happiness.

Hi Harri, a must listen if you like Dan Fogelberg's "Netherlands" is "In the Passage." It is one of the trippiest songs ever written. The entire song is about the struggle with existential existence, with lines like "The Future's never coming, and the past has never been." It starts off with "There's a ring a round the moon tonight, and a chill in the air. And a fire in the stars that hang so near, so near. In the passage from the cradle to the grave, we are born madly dancing....." Just a wild song. Cheers, John

@@marybaillie8907 I love church music also Mary. I guess it was the "lol" that threw me, so I apologize. My mom always told me that you can pray anywhere. We left our Church that we grew up in because it was a group of people that saw it as a fashion show and had the kind of lives that didn't quite scream "God," if you know what I mean. saw him at Berkley Community Theatre in 1976 never hearing of him before but my friends were all going.
I was a college dj and came back from that concert and played the entire Home Free album on air. Netherlands was the last album I liked of his before I felt he went commercial.
