My dad was a fighter pilot for 25 years and retired a colonel. Im a 46 year old carpenter no wife or kids. Yet, my dad thinks everything I do is the greatest thing in the world. I know I’m not half the man he is, but I know he’s proud of me as his son.

Small world. I would’ve never thought Harri would react to this song!! I hadn’t even thought about this song for years. I was in elementary school from 72 to 76. You must be a lot older than I am. Not too often I talk to someone from Peoria. I live in Georgia and I do sometimes here because we have a Cat plant here. The 70s sure had a lot of soft rock pop songs. These songs never go out of style. Another channel I watch reacted to summer breeze today. Loved that too.

It’s great that his father apparently went to one of Dan’s concerts near the end of his life and saw this performed live. You can just picture him sitting there tearing up and so proud of his son. I had a chance to see Dan in his prime and was absolutely impressed. One of my favorite artists & favorite songs by him. A loving tribute to his dad. Dan Fogelberg was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. It had so many good songs on it including "Same Old Lang Syne", "Hard To Say", "Leader Of The Band" & "Run For The Roses". He also had the hit "Longer" from the year before. We lost him much too soon (1951-2007).

This song always makes me think of my own father. My dad was a Salvation Army bandsman and when I was growing up in Scotland I'd walk next to him as the band would gather at the center of Ayr and parade to the church building. He was a world-class organist as well as one of the best horn players I ever knew.
I play a little bit, too. Mostly guitar these days, but I feel an affiliation with the sentiment of Dan Fogelberg. "My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man..."

I've remarked about the same thing, how can this incredible artist be overlooked? His music was a big part of my "soundtrack" in the 70s. It spans so many different genres, too. He was so talented...played more than a dozen different instruments and wrote most of his own music. He collaborated with other artists too, like almost all the various members of the Eagles...Joe Walsh produced several of his albums. "As The Raven Flies" is a good example of his ability to really rock. "Tucson Arizona (Gazette)" is an epic tale with amazing instrumentals. "Only The Heart May Know" is a sweet duet with Emmylou Harris. "County Clare" is a gorgeous instrumental he did with Tim Weisberg. So many wonderful songs to choose from...I still listen to his music all the time.

Back in 1982, I was in the Air Force and in the country of Greece for a month during Father's Day. I made my own Father's Day card to send to my dad. I quoted the third verse of this song: "I thank you for the music, and your stories of the road. I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go. I thank you for the kindness, and the times when you got tough. And Papa I don't think I said, 'I love you' near enough." I played the guitar back then as well, and this was a song that every guitar player HAD to learn how to play. Years later, in 2013 when my father passed away, at his funeral, I quoted this verse again! My dad was always my hero, and this song makes me think of him every time I hear it. Loved your reaction to it!

On Monday we will lay my father to rest.
He was a music minister who led choirs and orchestras.
In the mid 60s he was in the airforce and couldn't wait to get out to resume his love of music.
I have been contacted by people I never knew who tell me what my father and his ministry meant to them.
One thing they all say is how kind he was.
Because of him my children and I, as well as his other grandchildren have a love of music. We all sing, we all play and this is his legacy.
Thanks for this review and your insight.

That is a hard thing to learn to stop giving so much to your own detriment to where it's one sided energy. Some of us who are service to others love helping others and that is how we get paid back but sometimes it's to our detriment when it doesn't feel good anymore when we keep giving and don't ever get anything back from them whether a person, a group or a job. Then it's time to leave because that won't change. There is free energy exchange between people and then you build that up within each other so it continues to grow. Also some of us who like to give also may have a hard time receiving it as well, as in when we need help we are uneasy about asking for it, we expect others to see it, but they don't so that gets hurtful as well. So we have to learn to ask for help and assistance or we won't get it. Thank you for this one, Dan has a beautiful voice that just keeps on giving as well.

This bloke was a great story teller and songwriter Harri with beautiful ballads and arrangements. 'Longer' is an evergreen, plus 'Dancing Shoes' , 'Give Me Some Time' , 'Phoenix', 'The Last to Know', 'Heart Hotels' and 'Along The Road.'

We all see our parents and our children through eyes of love. I think of my parents, and wish I could be as kind, as strong in their faith, as wise, as upright and noble, as they were. But they saw their grown children, and praised how we had exceeded them -- we earned more, were better educated, provided more for our families, travelled more, etc. We each feel what we lack, and admire it in the other. It's a cyclical admiration society. : )

Hey there, good man .... thank you for doing this one. Here is a good live version / video on YT of it, and it tells a little about the back story of the song by the writer himself at the beginning. This is the title of the video > Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band (from Live: Greetings from the West) - Larry C. : > )

Yay, thank you for reacting to this classic. One of the first songs that I memorized back then as a kid, because I just loved listening to it, i found it soothing, memories of my childhood. Harri, I hope you also check out Dan Fogelberg's other songs that are my faves as well: "Longer", "Heart Hotels" and "Lonely In Love".

I could never have surpassed my father. Because he is his own person. His being what he was allowed me to be me. The line "I thank you for the freedom, when it came my time to go". Sums it up. He let me fly.

Dan Fogelberg died 2007 at 56. He wrote Leader of the Band for his father. I’ve always loved the story behind this song. He recorded it 1979 but didn’t release it until 1981. His dad passed about 1982 and was in fact able to listen to the song before his passing. This is a clip I found that tells a little about Dan’s story about the song.
