This song gives me the same pit in my stomach that I had when I saw an old high school love years later. It is spot on.
This is Dan Folgerberg's true encounter with his highschool sweetheart in 1975...they went their seperate ways after graduating in 1969, because he pursued music.

Great true story though it is more about the past not found love just a chance short meeting. He knew the direction he was heading and was not back to the small town where he grew up. He was already a big star on the way in becoming a superstar!

I had a super complicated relationship with my father.
I went to see him once when I was in my 20s. We were driving to the store or something... and sitting in this awkward silence. Then this song came on the radio.. and we both said. "Oh I love this song!".
By the end we had the song blasting and were scream singing lol

I heard this song when I was a kid and I loved it then and I love it now. Now that I'm obviously much older and have a much clearer understanding of what those old familiar pangs are now it means even more.

He did not release this song until 5 or 6 years after this happened. After she had gotten a divorce and remarried. Then one day in Chicago, while driving to work (Elementary teacher I think) she heard this on the radio and new 100 % it was about that night.

I was serving in Iraq when I learned of Dan's passing. a sucker punch to my heart.
Oh you two .. I heard Dan Fogelberg telling the background to the story he actually was looking for whipped cream I think for a Christmas drink for his Dad and she was shopping for eggnog.. I think he just made the lyrics frozen food to make it sound better or flow better or something .. but it really is based on him meeting his for real old high school girlfriend

True story the setting..Peoria Illinois the girl Jill Brewer at a grocery store on East Front st. 2 different things Jill's eyes were green and her husband was a physical education school teacher.[they divorced but not because of this song].I love this song,Dan was picking up whipped cream for Irish coffee.

It's a great song about an old relationship, definitely not a pick up song. "Should old acquaintance be forgot" type song. It didn’t work out in high school, they were reminiscing. Missed the mark on this one. Try Leader of the Band to make-up for this one. It will be hard to misconstrue. Other than this one, I love your reactions.
This song can be a tear jerker
Please check out the history on this one. It's basically a true story. Maybe you to shouldn't recall 1st loves together, but you're a great couple so you can probably be honest about it. 🤣
As a teen I could see my life playing out a a reunion much like this. It was relatable before I even had the experience. I wished my story was like this when I heard it. All these years later I can say that I still know that 1st girlfriend and it works like that. I'm glad we're still friends.
This and Unanswered Prayers by Garth Brooks are my favorite songs about lost innocence, first loves, and how time changes us all. It is a beautiful and sad song, probably my favorite by Fogelberg, with Leader of the Band a very close second.
The real story behind it is quite moving.

This encounter actually happened with a couple of minor details changed. Dan’s wife at the time did not want the song released so it was delayed until 1981. Top 10 hit.

@@timmholl9238 The Professor of Rock did an half hour episode about this song talking to the producer of this song. The girls name is Jill. When Dan died of cancer, Jill was interviewed about the song.
I love this song and it means more since I had a similar experience with an old love (that I’m still friends with) and we share this song with each other every New Year Eve 🤗. So glad you’re enjoying Dan’s music! ❤
This song is almost 100% true, there are just a few variations from the narrative:
1) They didn't meet in a grocery store, it was a convenience store;
2) The woman, later identified as Jill Anderson Greulich, does not have blue eyes, they are green;
3) Jill did not marry an architect, he was a phys. ed. teacher.
Other than that, the story is correct, even the part about buying a 6-pack and drinking it in her car as they talked (for two hours) and the snow changing over to rain as Dan drove home.

This is a very sad song about ex-high school sweethearts seeing each other years later only older and each a bit longing for times past but knowing it’s not meant to be ever again.
Dan Fogelberg was a brilliant song writer and performer who died much too young at 56 (prostate cancer). His catalogue of songs is incredible. This song, Stars with one very poignant lyric: "And it's getting easier each day To weep about you
Harder every night to sleep without you" if you've broken up with someone or worse lost your love to an illness, and Leader of the Band which was a tribute to his father who was a high school band director are my favorites but there are so many more.

When I was stationed in Colorado it was getting close to New Year’s Eve. They had a contest in the radio that you had to call in when this song came on. Bunch of us were sitting in the day room and it came on. We started singing away and then it got quiet and we forgot about the contest lost in our own thoughts. This song sure does evoke memories

I lived in a small Colorado town with Dan’s ex-wife. One of my good friends babysat for her, she said she net Dan once when he came to visit his ex. She said he was so very nice. The photography teacher at my high school was named Dan Fogleberg, he was the singer’s cousin.

This song started out as a exercise in songwriting. He basically took Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and made a song out of it. It actually happened, the convenience store is still there in Peoria, IL. He wasn't going to release it due to it actually happening, and he never would confirm if it were true or not, quite the gentleman he was, and my goodness what a brilliant songwriter and musician. "Leader of the Band" is also about his father Lawrence, is a fantastic song, and exactly why my kids call me Poppa rather than dad.

Guys, brussel sprouts and diapers? Were we listening to the same song? This is a sad song of lost innocence and dreams, real life compared to young love and idealism. Maybe it's because I'm past the halfway point in life that I see it differently, but then again, this song has resonated with me since it was first released. Usually I love your reactions, but I think you need to listen to this one again.

I can't believe I don't remember this. I'm older than dirt. I graduated high school in 1969, when I was 17 yrs old. I remember his other songs. The guy I should've been with never told me how he felt until years later. This guy is singing about a girl that was his girlfriend in high school than met her yrs later.
