Immolation Liquidation he shaves his head because he WANTS TO! His hair is chestnut brown...
#4 : in 1997, Phil shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.
Immolation Liquidation he is a twin...thus how he accomplishes so much...his pinky finger is missing
Well, he is married ☺️
Phil likes piña coladas, and getting caught in the rain.
one of the most underrated guitar companies of all time, they're guitars are phenomenal
Wait so danelectro was a legit brand for years until they went defunct and then some dude who wanted to brand his pedals he made dug up the old name and then he started production of guitars back up?
Exactly
Please make a part 2. I have several Dano guitars and it’s always hard finding info about them and the company. I have had some of their guitars 15 plus years and never knew what was in a lipstick pickup until I saw your video! Thanks Phil.
They were pretty innovative. They introduced the sitar guitar, with the distinctive buzzing bridge and sympathetic strings. They also made a low end version without the sympathetic strings and a single pickup.
They were pretty ahead of their time by having completely shielded electronics. Not only were the lipstick tube pickups completely shielded, the controls were wrapped in a folded paper/copper tape enclosure providing a completely shielded signal path.
Many of the two pickup Danos were wired so that the pickups were in series when both were on. Pretty different than the way everyone else does it to this day.
The tic tac bass never really was a big consumer hit, but turns up in hundreds of pop and country tunes you've heard on the radio.
The necks were made of poplar with rosewood fingerboards. The regular scale and bass necks seem to have two non adjustable flat metal reinforcement rods, possibly aluminum. They worked pretty well judging from the ones I've seen. The short scale necks had one rod. They worked less well.
They produced one of the first electric 12 strings, called a Bellzouki. Named after session player and tinker, Vinnie Bell, who also seemed to have much input on several models including the sitar.
They seemed to do almost everything in-house, including making the weird tuning machines.
After the demise of Danelectro, Dan Armstrong acquired a bunch of bodies and necks and sold them with what appears to be his own pickup. I don't know how rare these are, but I've seen them turn up from time to time.
I goes on and on...
You could do a fairly long segment just recounting all the products Danelectro originated. Electric sitar? Pocket-sized amps?
Amp in case? Guitar-mandolin? Talk box? Plus the baritone guitar as you mentioned.
Also, Seymour Duncan and GFS both make Strat-sized lipstick pickups.
Almost all of their pedals are OK, but some are exceptional.
Jimmy page played the danelectro in Kashmir
Dano's are also one of the few guitars with two single coils factory wired in series instead of parallel. That's why they're louder with both on, instead of slightly quieter like most guitars. They're operating as a giant humbucker with the switch in the middle position.
Thanks for this information
great info Phill, thank you and yes please do a part 2, that would be great, Cheers
IIRC Nathen Daniel was hired by the US Government in WWII to make a radio that was shielded to prevent noise and static in the military jeeps and military vehicles.
Well done video. I like that you used clips from other videos.
Always loved the styling of the pedals.
We definitely need a Part 2 to this video. I love Danelectro guitars. I have a seafoam green U2 with (modded) white pickguard and white knobs.
I found a short scale Airline with the tube amp case in my grandparents' attic. It was my aunt's during the 60's. Almost 35 years dormant, the amp fired right up when I plugged it in. The guitar on the other hand, needed some work to say he least. The thin chipboard body, short, thick neck & wooden bridge all were affected by its time in storage. I kept it for the amp until the speaker blew then took the vintage tubes out of it for a project amp I built a few years later. All in all, a fun find that was super-innovative for its time.
Thanks for sharing this. I learned a few new facts about Danelectro. Their guitars and pedals are unique and I didn’t realize they own Snark which is probably the most popular clip on tuner.
I have an early 60's Convertible. Traded mountain bike parts for it. The top was pushed in and the pickup was missing. Have replaced the top myself and still haven't got a pickup. But it has a great neck, super light and fun to play while sitting watching TV. Painted it Fire engine red with matching headstock. Gonna look for a 59 N.O.S. Like always Philip, very informative info.
I can wind you a pickup. #NepTonePickups
Here’s something for part 2: Danelectro was instrumental in making Rotosound strings an international brand. When John Entwistle recorded “The Ox” on The Who’s debut album, he used a Danelectro Longhorn Bass. When the strings either got too old or broke, he had to buy a new one because they didn’t sell the strings separately. He got tired of buying a new instrument every time he needed new strings, so he went to Rotosound and developed the first set of Rotosound strings that would take the world by storm.
I love that 58 longhorn... a real conversation piece
They also had a line of acoustic guitars that they made with harmony and Silverstone I've got an all Birch model h615 and it sounds wonderful
I own an original 1958 Dano. Actually an amazing very unique guitar.
I have a 1965 dbl p/u Danelectro w/whammy bar that my mother purchased for me new when I was 6 yrs old. It was the guitar I grew up with and I always envied those players with Fender Strats and Gibson's. Mine came with a soft shell case. The whammy bar was attached to the bridge by a nut you would need an adjustable wrench to remove it. I took it off and lost it forever. It had been loaned out to relative at one point in its life when i abandoned it but he did not take the best care of it, but then again I had shellacked the fingerboard trying to make it more strat-like. It was interesting it had a strap hook at the and of the headstock that i actually used in the 60's before i discovered everyone else had the straps connected at the base of the neck.
Dan-Echo is still my favorite delay pedal. Had it since it first came out in 98?? Wanted to buy one of their guitars since then just haven't got around to it, maybe this year.
PearlJamaholic
I've bought three of those over the years and I have one on my pedal board just after a Reel Echo!
Very interesting stuff that I didn't know about Danelectro. We need a part 2 in more detail about the amps. I have one bone to pick with you Phil! When people at work talk about watching their favorite shows and I say "Oh, I watch Phillip McKnight a lot." I get dumb looks. They say, "oh of course if you're not playing music you watch other people talk about it." You have become my favorite show!!
My Danelctro pedal came with a Danelectro 9volt battery. Good video!
I have their 12 string and it is pretty nice . I only use the neck pickup but it sounds good. The bridge pickup is a little too bright. The switch and pots do feel cheap but only using the neck pickup it sounds fine. Got it as a scratch and dent and for as often as I want to play 12 string it does the job. I recently saw Joe Welsh playing one and it sounded good on TV
please yes! more videos on Danelectro!
What would be an interesting follow-up is their recent resurgence in the MI industry and what plans they have to keep pushing the envelope! The new pedal line was definitely inspirational!
About four or five years ago they relaunched the brand and the prices had suddenly doubled without explanation.
Such a cool guy... Thanks for all the research and insight bro !
I bought a 59M on your review.. love that guitar...
Jimi Hendrix's first electric guitar was a Danelectro! John Entwhistle from The Who played a "steer horn" bass early on...and Graham Nash played a "steer horn" 6 string in The Hollies. A '59 M was used extensively by Syd Barrett on the First Pink Floyd album...and my theory is that Jimmy Page's 59 M may have actually been the one used by Syd Barrett...
I've got the 1980s U2 reissue made in Korea. I love it.
Such a cool sounding amp built into that case
my first guitar was bought at Sears my mother bought me my first electric guitar the silvertone in a case that had an amp built in it that was awesome I took it everywhere played with bands with it that was my guitar over a fender back in the 60s.
One big fan of the Silvertone 1448 is Dexter Romweber (Flat Duo Jets.) Dexter's deep into 1950s-60s Rock and Roll music of which he writes inspired music. Dexter's also largely influential to Jack White.
I was under the lipstick pickups were named as such. That maxfactor make up was just down the street from Danelectro company. They bought the lipstick casings from them.
It was because they were close and supply could be met.
Best one of these yet ! Thanks Phil !:-)
I purchased my first bass in 1994, and demo'd a '58 Longhorn, but decided on a Yamaha RBX250. Should've bought the Dano...anyways, last year I picked up a brand new (2017) '58 Longhorn...awesome 70's Rock sound. So good.
Can't say who or where but I had heard the solid bodies were made from diving board material. Made sense to me.
Carol Kaye hated the build quality, but liked the sound the Danelectro bass made. If you don't know who that is, you really should take the time to look her up. She was the studio bassist for so many great hitmakers.
I love dano. I've never used a better clip-on tuner than my red multi-instrument snark. It'll tune any instrument (it's even great for making sure you're singing the right note). Their pedals are badass too. Great value for the money.
Danelectro spring reverb tanks, even though they sound terrible had a beneficial impact on the industry. At the time Hammond (of organ fame) supplied all the reverb tanks for Fender, Gibson, and others, charging a royalty for every unit. Nat Daniel discovered that there were earlier patents than Hammond's, sharing this fact with Ted McCarty at NAMM allowed Gibson to save money building their amps.
Also don't forget to talk about the electric sitar! Danelectro's collaboration with studio musician Vincent Bell produced some very innovative stuff, including I think the first electric 12 string.
Nice video! I was wondering if you could sometime do a video on "5 Things you didn't know about the Les Paul Junior"
I have a Danelectro that I consider almost a toy, but I upgraded the stock bridge with one from their webpage -- that helped a lot. I also replace the whole neck because, somehow, the original one snapped! I think my BIG nephew may have sat on it, so for that I can't really blame the company.
When I was a kid the few Dano's I played often had scratchy pots in a very short period of time. Like less than a year. These new ones are far better & the pots last easily a year, sometimes more.
Dano make new reproductions of the Silvertone 1449 that they once sold to Sears. What is really cool about this guitar that unlike a standard Dano it is not all hollow. It has a mahogany center block Like a Gibson 335 or most Gretsch's.In effect it turns the guitar into a true solid body. I had a Duncan Pearly Gates PAF put into the bridge position. This guitar now sounds almost identical to a Gibson SG. Awesome !!!
It seems you have a good relationship with the guys at Danelectro? It would be cool to see you do an interview with someone from there
I love Danos! I have a 90s Convertible guitar. On my pedal board all but one pedal are Danelectros. I always thought they were a great bang for the buck and epitomized the cheap guitar concept.
Watchman4u
I call my playing more punkabilly. I play psychobilly, rockabilly, punk, ska, oi and country. Sometimes a bit of shoegaze for fun. Basically I learned to play songs with cowboy chords and have a punk bent. I can play noise but its more like the Cramps.
i have a small apartment . and small budget, so I own the danelectro hodad amp and the delay pedal. works great for my uses.
I always thought that Dwayne Eddie used a Gretsch with a Bigsby, his usual orange guitar, on Rebel Rouser. Learn something everyday.
Danelectro is just so darn unique, you have to love 'em. I even have a few of there pedals because the look so darn different and sound decent too.
Nice video, good info. Thanks. (the audio could use volume consistency though. It was loud, the soft. Sounded like good audio capture just the mix of sections made this a one watcher for me. TMI but thanks all the same.)
All I know is the Fab tone is by far one of my favorite pedals. I bought one when they first came out and there are only a few pedals that can match it ex. EHX and MXR to name a few. Hey you should do something about Dunlap/mxr
I trinidad there is and old photograph of young Jimi Hendrix playing a Danelectro at the garden of his house.
Hey Phil, like your vids! can you review the danelectro 59X12 ? Think You're the right guy to do it !
Nice! And just got a dano 12er!
Part 2 please and Phil where did you get yours from thanks
The first basses John Entwistle played were Dani’s. You can find the stories anywhere on the web.
I love those facts video!
i own a u1 since 2nd appearance in the sears book. i like the thin neck over my les paul as for sound they are close. the les paul rings much longer
I love Danelctro pedals! They used to be a well kept secret. Been arguing with my self about getting a Baritone. The price on the Danelectro leans me to it over the Gretsch....but I love my Gretsches!
Dennis Shea
They actually pair well with Gretsch! The baritone is cool but also limiting. If you buy it do yourself a favor and keep it. I miss mine and a U 56 I used to own.
Anyone else absolutely love the Dan-Echo? I’ve had a couple of them and always thought they were pretty righteous.
Love they look and tone
Did you miss the fact that SRV had played a Danelectro Strat type guitar? I believe that is huge for the history of the brand. Best Regards.
Part 2? Yes please.
Hendrix owned one of these and now i really want one 😄😄
Every player in the world we ever heard of played a Danelectro at one time or another. In Rock, in Country, in Blues (I don't think Wes Montgomery ever played one, though).
Jimmy Page educating Jack White and the edge, Danelectro in hand (It might get loud): ttps://czcams.com/video/ODidAgdL40Y/video.html
The long horn bass was used in many recordings but hardly ever live.
BTW...Link Wray also played a Danelectro !
I wish there was better history on the guitars. For instance, what is the significance in the third number in the serial numbers? What is the difference in a 59 and a 3026? What is the proper way to adjust intonation on a "floating wood" bridge setup?
the danelectrom 59 nos guitar neck is so thin its my favorite
I bought my Danelectro Rumor Danoblaster Bass new for $134.00.
That was in 2004.
The thing is AWESOME.
It was my main stage axe until I acquired an Alvarez Villain Bass.
Now my Dano is my back up bass in case something goes wrong on stage.
The chorus button was definitely a great add on.
The effect sounds just the way I want it to even though it's un - adjustable and fixed.
The damn thing sounds JUST LIKE A FENDER P.
I can't believe how inexpensive (Cheap) these axes are.
VERY AFFORDABLE.
Please make another vid and talk more about the made for sears models with the amp incase
Anaheim*lofi Anaheim my Dad has one he bought in the 60’s.
Nice intro to Danelectros, but a few comments: No less an authority than Nat Daniel himself told me those were actual lipstick tubes that he used, purchased from a company that supplied the cosmetics industry. The Danelectro six-string bass was introduced closer to 1958 than 1956, and it was a six-string BASS, tuned one octave lower than a guitar. The few people who wanted to use it as a baritone either capoed it at the fifth fret or figured out their own string gauges to restring it as a baritone. When Steve Ridinger brought back the Danelectro name, it was with a partner, Michael Campion, who had a lot to do with the guitar production, for one thing bringing in Danelectro expert Steve Soest to make sure they were done right.
Phillip, do you know who makes the lipstick pickups for Danelectro? Which lipsticks are in the model you are holding in this video? Which lipsticks are in the '84? Thank you so much! Chris
Danelectro makes great old style 9 volt batteries that seem to impart great tone to analogue pedals
No mention of the kickass silvertone amps they built? I'm surprised
I own one of the 90's reissue longhorn basses
Awesome video
Part 2, please sir
Good enuff for Link Wray -good enuff 4 me
didn't they also make first 6 string bass? not the modern kind of 6 string bass which virtually is octave lower guitar?
Honestly now my life has been fulfilled.. comment liked by my favorite yt channel rock on! \m/
Been playing for 20+ years and played my first Danelectro 2day... then this video pops up. Freeeeaakkyyy.
Hey Phillip, please follow up. It seems to me the greatest reissues are from the late 90s, any thoughts? I play a DC-3 from around ‘98, made in Korea, that is spectacular. My friend owned a studio back then with a wall of classic Gibsons and Fenders plus every recent Dano guitar and bass. The Dano’s I’ve played in the last five years were disappointing. Anyone have any thoughts?
the fab metal i bought makes me think of alex lifesons tone if its up all the way. sounds pretty gnarly coming out of a mocking bird or my randy rhoads
My Dad has a Silvertone with the amp/case exactly like the thumbnail pic. I always assumed it was a starter that would never have any value. Could I have been wrong?
they definitely have value. i bought and sold a set for close to $500 and have seen them go for more, and less. they will never match prices like vintage fender or gibsons though.
Cool video!
can you please make a video on lowering string action on a floydrose 1500 guitar...preferably on a schecter e1 frs special edition.
oh .....thankx tho
Perfect for my deathstonercore concert
the baritone would be, for sure.
Got a 67 danelectro hornet in a weird colour appears factory thgh..is seafoam green..not the usual black or sunburst
#6 Danelectro is damn cool and unique.
I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard, a Channel Bound FSR American Standard Stratocaster, a PRS Custom 24 with hand-made custom pickups... and a Danelectro 56 Pro. The guitar I prefer the most on the neck position, clean channel of the amp, is the Danelectro. That speaks volumes if you ask me...
volume's to eleven dude.
Kcuhc and chapter is too.
i like the USA made stuff. that was a lot of the appeal if the early danos. i cannot look at the current ones the same way. same thing with the newer silvertone stuff - using the name shouldn't fool anyone
not judging anyone for liking it. just stating my view. i didn't know that about snark, though. i guess i do like one of the new dan offerings!
Gotta love that Masonite tone! Yeah, buddy!
Fun fact because of the lipstick pickups: Seymour Duncan makes some sick Lipstick Pickups - both for Danelectro guitars and for strats ;)
Arved Bohn
They do! I would steer you to GFS pickups as they are made overseas and have a few more models to choose from. They are also way more affordable. A SD is a bit of an overkill on price and quality as lipsticks are cheap pickups to begin with.
Thank you mate, I'm gonna check them out! :D
Arved Bohn
No worries! I just looked them up, the traditional Danelectro pickups are on the Specialty page. The Strat and Tele pickups are under the single coils. They also make humbucker models but to be honest, humbucker lipstick pickups are still a bit thin compared to regular humbuckers. Definetly something different.
You can see Tom Petty handle a longhorn six string with care in some Traveling Wilbury footage and in the videos. Whether or not he recorded with it or just used it for looks in the videos and photos, I wouldn't know.
I wonder how this guitar would hold up against my Pacifica or ESP LTD. My back is becoming an issue and you shed about 4 Lbs with the Danelectro 59M.
Mr Photorooster
It has a bite similar to a Telecaster without the weight. Also because the guitar is essentially hollow inside you get the airy quality of a hollowbody. I describe my Convertible as a Tele and a banjo had a baby. For overdriven sounds it is great and you get a psychobilly or Jesus and Mary Chain type of tone. Aggressive but thinner then a solid body. Lots of bite! These guitars also take other types of effects very well!
Hope that helps.
I own one danelectro guitar. In fact the exact red 59 nos model seen here. My take is they are absolutely unique in tone and fun guitars. Wouldn’t give that sound up for anything. Unless you have one you would not get it
Should I get the Danelectro 59 with or without the f-hole?!?! Help
I have a black Longhorn bass reissue, white "tuxedo" sides. Regardless of some flimsy internal parts, that is one fine ax, sweet sounding, and lightweight. The more I play it, the better I like it. Better than a P bass? Well it's a lot lighter, but beyond that, false comparison. Like, izza Strat better than a Les Paul? Give it up, there is room for more than one "good" type of sound from an electric bass. Zoom zoom, boom boom.
I still like hearing you say Dane Electro 😃
