You should have covered more about the pick ups. A lot of people assume they are P90s because of the look of them, but they are their own thing.
TOTALLY different pick up! Built differently! Built LIKE a Strat pick up.
For a bit more detail, they have pole pieces like a traditional Strat single coil, but are flatter with windings that extend further out, hence their size. P90s are thicker and have a bar magnet at the base with non-magnetised slugs, like a humbucker coil (and a lot of the cheaper Strat single coil pickups).
The J Mascis Jazzmaster does have more of a P90 construction with the bar magnet but it's thinner, so not quite the same as a P90.
Correct!
I thought it was in my head when I played one. That p90 sound wasn't there.
Funnily enough, the pickups in the classic player that Phillip has are indeed basically P90s
My main axe, criminally underrated instrument.
Can you play metal on it?. I somehow managed to play slipknot and s.o.a.d on my tele
"A lot of jazz players still use the" press x to doubt

x
x they use telecaster neck pickups

Is that a Silver Sky behind you?! You know, Phil, there's probably 5 things we don't know about that guitar!
Waiting for the jaguar one!
Also, now the Jazzmaster is now a symbol of shoegaze and indie rock either
@@jvin248 yeah but its mostly used for shoegaze and indie like they said.
Luis Pérez that’s a shame isn’t it. I love the feel of this guitar, but I’d never let my friends see me playing one.
Phillip McKnight and Darrell Braun are essential viewing. Excellent always.
Would love to see the Jaguar video! Been thinking about one for a long time but have never fully understood the configurations and benefits. Thanks always for the great information here!
Mark Agnesi from Norman's Rare Guitars had explained how the Jaguar works many times, but once more with McKnight would be cool as well.
Top controls are a volume and tone with rollers. When you put the top switch towards your feet then they become swithes that control the pickups seperately and then the knobs control the tone and volume no matter the switches. Weird you have to sit down with one to get it but it becomes very clear then.
have had my jazzmaster for 3yrs and I loooove it
love these info videos, the history, the types of switches, the various tones all in a short time frame!! Yes keep them coming
Sounds good phil. and the info is invaluable as always too
Love the video lotta great information thanks
"Number dos"
made my day. Thanks Phillip!
A Jazzmaster video on my Birthday! I love my 2014 3-tone sunburst Mexican Jazzmaster. It plays great and sounds even better.
This is great! Recently I bought a Jazzmaster 60´s lacquer series surf green, my dreamed guitar. So versatile and confortable. Yeah, dreams come true! Greetings from Costa Rica!
Nice video, explained very nice.
Great video Phil, you're the best!!
Interesting info here and what a great looking guitar. I am very tempted to get one. Thanks for this.
always enjoy these videos Phil! love me some Jazzmasters!
Cool vid ty for uploading. This was useful to me as I just bought an RTJ60 which is kinda halfway between a Jazzmaster & a Jaguar.
Just bought the Squier contemporary in gold! Can't wait!
Man, you are just full of info. This was very informative. Thank you so much!
These are always fun videos.
Very simple explanation, wasted no time. Thank you
Best explanation between Jazzmaster and Jaguar. Besides the pickup configuration, the Jaguar is basically a Jazzmaster but with a Mustang neck.
Thanks for educating the masses about the rhythm circuit!
Nice one! Would love to see a video showing off your collection. You've got some absolute beauts on the wall!
Finally a clear explanation for all these switches!! Now it makes sense!!
Thanks for turning me on to the Squire Vintage Modified Jazzmaster it's a great guitar.
Cool video. Would love to see the jag one!
There is yet one more thing left: the Jazzmaster and Jaguar are usually not properly setup and this causes a lot of people to actually dislike the guitar. Proper setup on these involve shimming the neck to give strings some angle at the bridge
Great episode with lots of info I've never heard before (even after 38 years of playing guitar).
Cool video, Phil!!!
Another eye opening vid. Thanks Phil and thanks to your many fans since the comments on the pickups was also a huge bed on info. I’ve always been a Strat player but this gives me another reason to: a) buy a guitar b) sit. I like sitting!
I love the sound of these guitars.
I might look at getting the Squier version of one of these down the track.
Thank you.
I have a Squier Jag and it's really cool sounding!
@@lehmusic2675
I have recently bought a Squier Bullet Mustang, and I love the feel of it.
I would like a better quality instrument like this down the track.
Excellent explanation of the Jazzmaster controls. I would still like to see a similar explanation of the Jaguar.
J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr made me realize how great these can be for rock music
That J Mascis Squire is 🔥
Dinosaur jr, Sonic Youth and my bloody valentine
Never thought I'd own a Jazzmaster, but I took a chance on a used Mexican 60's reissue model (surf green) and I absolutely love it. Such a unique sound.
Great video 👍
More Jazzmaster videos please Phil!
neat. i like that idea of using different ohm pots for different sounds. might have to mod a guitar to do that! cool video. thanks for the info!
Can't wait to see that Jag vid!!! Btw, what's your opinion on the Peavey XXX as a substitute for a Mesa Dual Rectifier?
i love jazzmaster content! i have not seen many videos on the G&L jazzmaster thing.
Great video as always. I'm not too familiar with the Jazzmaster or the Jaguar, so thanks for the info.
Just took delivery of a new Player Jazzmaster. Twin humbuckers, 3 way switch, volume, tone & a coil tap. Sounds great thru a Fender Super Champ X2.
Thanks! Can you do one of these for the firebird?
Thanks Phil
I'd love to see a review or demo of the jaguar and mustang too so I didn't think twice and hit the like and subscribe button. Cheers!
Jaguar, Jaguar, Jaguar! I learned alot about a guitar I have been avoiding.
I'd love to see a Jazzmaster and Jaguar in the same video. To get a nice little tonal difference.
That was really cool. I'd would like to the a Jaguar and Jagstang as well.
Que linda 🎸 guitarra, muy buen sonido.
Would love a fender mustang vid, so many versions of that guitar.
Cool video. What is that guitar behind you? (Looks like it has a gold pickguard and studs on it.)
Do a Jaguar and then one for the Mustang
If he does that, he has to do the jagstang too...
@@AlanJWatkins And a Jagmaster! Yes, they exist, and I have one.
More please!
Thanks for sharing some facts about the Jazzmaster. My first electric guitar was a used Jaguar and I always wondered how it is different from the Jazzmaster other than scale length. I would like to see a jaguar video.
Yeah, jag and mustang. I’ve got a VM Jag and it’s pretty rad. Took a minute to get used to the controls, it’s not that bad though.
#6: it's the guitar of Sad Lovers & Giants. It's a part of the band sound.
Phiiiilll!!! Love your Chanel !!!
Can you do a fender VI one please? There are not enough bass videos on it anywhere.
Great stuff!
And yeah, I would love a video on the Jaguar. That is if you can say Jaguar instead of Jagwire... ;)
Can the Mustang be in line after the Jaguar? Great videos as usual...
Yes, thank you! Even the official Fender video that supposedly "de-mystifies" the Jazzmaster doesn't actually explain what that upper switch does, they just say it switches from lead to rhythm mode without saying what that actually means, hardware-wise.
I've been waiting for quick, easy explain. Yes, do Jaguar. Esquire too.
Very cool. Video idea: how best to pair a n amo with a guitar? Is there such a thing? What considersmations go into it?
I want a jag so yeah, that video would be great!
Jaguar! That was my first "name-brand" guitar back in the '70's. First guitar was "Teisco Del Rey" big, flat hollow-body electric.
another great educational video 👍Phil, never played a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar
Nice explanation Phil ! Love my Jazzmaster . Cheeers !
Hey Phillip I have a Schecter exterme omen 6 that doesn't sound as good as it used to. It was damaged by Harvey and the floods here in Texas but it's not rusting yet. If your looking for something to mod for your Sharpen my axe series you can use mine if you want
Are you going to do a review of the silver sky that you have hanging?
I'd love to see a comparison video please!
We all want that Jag video sir!
It’s been 3 hours and Phil already made a 1000+ likes what a boss
Love my Jaguars!!! Will love the video!!!
Impressively quick edit on the scale. Great video as always.
Actually in the rhythm switch one. The lower the resistance of the volume pot shorts MORE of the high freq to gnd.
Phil u should really checkout the tagima tw61 it's like a jazzmaster with a few differences but amazing for the price 👍
Lol good job fixing the scale length mistake so quickly
I like these videos
Many years ago when I first got into guitar I played either a Jazzmaster or Jaguar in a shop. I didn’t know how to play much and the few songs I knew were all metal. So I was hitting random notes, not scales or modes, random notes. Everything I played made me sound like a blues musician. I need that Jaguar video for comparison so I can figure out what I played.
Having never looked too closely at a Jazzmaster over the last 40 years, I just learned that what I thought were switches are pots. Very cool, thankee kindly.
Can't wait for the Jaguar video! I had to (unfortunately) choose between a Jazz and a Jag, ultimately going for the Jag. The body is probably one of the best solid body designs I've ever played. Still very much prefer the Jag tones for my style of play
Nice video! Waiting for the Jaguar video!
imo
Good vid on my favorite Fender.
imo
Thanks for all your videos! So cool to find videos that aren't about politics. Thanks Phil! You rock!
🤘😬🤘
Alrighty! Almost fifteen percent thumbs-up, I believe we want your exposition on the Jaguar, Phillip!
Jazzy! New shirts are cool!
Jaguar video short please! And please do a little bit more playing on that beautiful Jazzmaster :)
Oh oh....Silversky in the background! 😳😏
wheres that Jaguar video Phill.. lol
Phill sadly I'm having issues with hand and back pain so want a shorter scale length and always loved the jaguar anyway so seemed logical choice till I look in to it and everyones got an opinion on bridge to shim or not to shim that is the question but not only one what to shim with cos we cant get the stew mac shims here in uk so would love it if you did a pros and cons of jags maybe 24 inch scale alternatives or just some of your techy genius to help me make sense of the whole jaguar debacle on youtube cos it's a shame loads on jazz master not a lot on jag and ones that do end up waffling bout the mustang when I came to learn jag facts could you please help make sense of ghis mess for me cos it really matters I'm trying to buy my number 1 guitar one I'll be buried with so want to make it a king of jags not a mishmash of crazy youtube dudes ideas and ya my be a youtube dude but you know ya onions and I 100% trust what you say
Do the Jag next please!!
Would love to know about the Jaguar!
Could someone tell me what is the factory height for the pickups of a jazzmaster classic player?
I knew all 5, this was released just after I learned all about the jazzmaster!
What's the blue guitar on the left
I knew absolutely nothing about either of these models other than they were considered "offset" body styles and even that might be wrong lol. Thanks Phil, looking forward to the Jag video. Peace!
Jim.Missy Wyant.Kennedy no it’s right. Jags, Jazzmasters, mustangs, and a few other fender models are considered offset. The term offset refers to the waist of the guitar. The inward curve of one side isn’t parallel to the other
I'd like one on the Jagmaster tbh
Awesome video, Phil! I've always dismissed Jaguars and Jazzmasters because of their complicated switching systems, but maybe I'll try out a Jazzmaster the next time I'm in a music store. Thanks!
They’re really not that complicated. I promise you. I know it looks like it, but they’re not. I just got my first one a month ago. If anything having the rhythm circuit and the regular circuit actually makes it much easier for you to make massive tonal jumps due to being able to very easily switch between the two. I’ve seen it described somewhere else as almost being like presets in a way and I kind of agree. But I love my jazz master. Absolutely beautiful guitars. Despite their tonal idiosyncrasies the breadth of sounds you can get out of them is astonishing.
