  • In this video I try to explain my process of swapping out the SRAM Apex 40 tooth crankset that came on my bike for a NX crankset with 32 took chainring to lower the gear inch when needed. I also wanted to run a 40 tooth on the NX to make it a better gear ratio for everyday riding. The idea is to be able to switch between the 2 gears

My old Surly LHT 26in had Shimano Deore/XT/Sram parts with 24-32-42t crankse cassette 11-34t and My new Soma Saga Disc will have Shimano Deore/XT 10 speed 22-30-40t crankset with 11-40t sunrace 10 speed cassette

Stop me if I am being a bit dumb, but shouldn't you have put a 2.5mm spacer on each side of the bottom bracket to keep it symmetrical, rather than both on the non-drive side that you did, then you wouldn't of had to be messing around with chainring bolt spacers.

Hi. Thanks for uploading this. I see that you have quite experience with different size chainrings. If I may ask for your help, I am planning to replace my Cannondale Hollowgram 40t with 30t or 32t Absolute Black Round Cannondale Hollowgram Direct Mount chainring on my Cannondale Slate, which I will take on a bikepacking trip. I do worry if a 30t or 32t would work nicely with the stock 11-42 cassette with Apex 1 derailleur. And which chainring would you recommend, 30t or 32t? Thank you.

Not sure if I’m answering your question but as long as you can get the direct mount in a 30 or 32 it shouldn’t affect the stock 11-42 cassette and Apex derailleur. You will need to shorten your chain. As for 30 or 32 , I guess it depends on if you don’t mind losing the speed on the top end with the 30T. In hindsight I think there is more benefit with going to a wider range cassette such as a 11-46 (or even 11-50T if you don’t mind the cadence changes and possibly swapping out the derailleur cage for a longer one) because you could have the benefit of a good lower climbing gear with the 50 and not compromise the higher end as much. The point I’m trying to make is it’s not a bad idea to increase the cassette range if you can. Visit www.bikecalc.com/gear_inches to look at how different combos affect gear inch. But depending on the specifics of the ride I would go with a 30T chagrin ring since I’m not the strongest climber and don’t race downhill with a loaded bike

@@socaljoe Much appreciated! This was really helpful. I will see if I can go with a wider range cassette without changing the cage. Thank you very much for your time.

Hi. Many thanks for the helpful videos. I too am about to change out my Sram Apex1 - 11speed cranks which are 110bcd. Could you confirm whether or not this NX crank conversion required fitting bottom bracket spacers in order to keep the chain angle correct and in alignment to the 11-46 cassette. or where they not needed ? Also what was the chain line measurement between the Rear Axle center and the bottom bracket center ? My intension is to fit a Ethirteen 9-46t cassette. Best wishes & happy pedalling 🙏

9-46 cassette is a great option, wish i had thought of that. Yes, as far as I know the NX is 73mm vs the Apex at 68 so you will need 2x2.5mm spacers to take up the 5mm gap and make the NX work. You can use chainring spacers to realign the chain line if needed. I think most of this is shown in the video, although probably overly convoluted

@@socaljoe Hi Joe. Thanks for the reply. On this Sram conversion I was particularly interested in the measurement from your rear Axel centre to your Crank centre as mine is 450mm centre to centre which is quite short compared to many other bikes.

What bottom bracket did you use? Thanks!

The bike came with a Sram GXP BB. So I simply had to add the 2x2.5mm spacers to get it to 73mm for the new crank
