The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Yes! I always loved watching these two groups on Ed's show. I still remember the world premier of the Temptations doing Runaway Child on Ed's show.
David Ruffin sang "Stop in the Name of Love" like it was his own. Dude literally made it his own.

yes he did! ❤️💋❤️
I'm surprised they never recorded it on a record
David’s cover of Stop in the name of love has me replaying this video once a month. It’s a different pain that he brings to the song.
He was already turning up. 😂😂😊
The amount of talent on this stage at this time in history was remarkable.
unmatched!
Eddie singing Baby Love is just like it was meant for him.
Eddie could make any song his. That voice was golden.
Yes! ❤️
No doubt. I felt a chill when he sung it. Thank God for recordings. My feelings would definitely be hurt. Melvin Franklin is my all time favorite.
That was my favorite part. Wish it was a little longer.
E. K.'s angelic falsetto sends Baby Love to an entirely higher plane, much smoother than hers ever was. Ruff' stole the show. "Prime" Classic Five right here baby...Haa'Mercy!

David showed Diana who's boss. Great voice, can't touch My man Mr. Ruffin. My Man's Took IT TO CHURCH WITH THAT NOTE😂😂😂😂😂Such a tragic loss. Rip Paul Ruff Corn Blue
Really, David cracked at 4:07 and was over singing just like Church people do to overcompensate because Diana & the Supremes ACED Losing You. Diana has an emotive voice that is versatile and doesn't need to hoop and holler to be affective.
@@user-zp8tu3gn8iDiana Ross can't sing she literally was asking for David's help she kept looking back at David for help because she was struggling🤣
@@johnomalley7211 Diana actually sounded really great, and shows that you don't have to scream, hoop, holler, and over sing to sing soulfully, and that is why David worked so hard to get his song back when she respectfully ACKNOWLEDGED him to join her. “I’m David Ruffin and these are the Supremes”
Anyone else get the chills watching this?
People don't know that on shows like Ed Sullivan and The Midnight Special, all acts were required to do it live!! Real professional.
It is just a popular myth that Ed did not allow lip syncing or required live performances. If the performer did not hold or was not in front of a mike, or they were moving all around and the volume stays the same, it was lip syncing. Even if mics were present, that was no guarantee that they were not lip syncing. A couple of Beatles appearances were not live, they were pre-recorded. One Spanky & Our Gang performance could not have been done any other way than lip syncing. One of the Carpenters performances on Ed's show was obviously lip synced. Mics were present, but you can tell if you know what to look for. Ed virtually admitted in his intro to the Brenda Lee performance of Losing You that the performance was not live. She had no mic and the rendition was obviously not backed by Ed's band. If you watch some videos here of singers and bands on Ed's show, you will see other examples that dispel the myth.
@@Bracgypsy Great research...I often though many of Ed's guests lip synced
That may have been the case for Midnight Special but definitely NOT Ed Sullivan show. Two easy examples I can think of where the Supremes lip-synched on ES Show was on their first performance of “Love Child” and then also a year later on “No Matter What Sign You Are”. On both those songs, they quite literally just mouthed along to the studio recorded track. Even in this performance, the only people who are singing live are those with a mic only (Diana, David, and Eddie).
@@Bracgypsy ...Correct!!! The Ed Sullivan Show wasn't lipsynched, PERIOD!!! At the Ed Sullivan Theatre? On Broadway between 53rd and 54th Streets? No way, Jose!!!

There’s a story behind this performance, to simplify it , David had to show Diana who’s the 🐐🗣💯💯💯
John Edwards
I don’t think people are comparing career gross revenue or even career achievements. They are observing that Ruffin was a far superior soul singer, which is obviously true. If you want to comment on who got more top billing in their career, or who wore wigs better, then that’s a different conversation.
If you thought David had to show Diana anything that meant even he thought Diana was a bad ass performer, but if you thought he had to show her who was ,100 he didn't because it's undeniable about Diana's abilities even then Diana came and did what she was sent to do, and that was give a good performance and she came put on a damn good performance as always. But back to David no slite at him because David did the same thing , him came and also put on a damn good performance , I think David was just being David and that was to do what he can also do , and that was to represent. David did no more to Diana than Diana did to David ,they both just had a good time as performing together they where not trippin

Ashley say so, Told me to check this out..👍
I’m a 90s baby and my parents are baby boomers. This music feeds my soul more than anything on the airwaves “catered” to my generation. This is truly timeless talent.
Because there was no Auto-Tune back then. You either had the talent, or left the room quietly without the door hittin' you in the fanny. Today's pop music sounds very synthetic, strange and soulless to me.
@@erossinema8797 Secially soulless...
@96Jazangel hopefully me and my band YahTribe will provide a resurgence of TRUE SOUL!
Dear Mary, we will miss you!
Quite comical how a few people on here are hating on Diana. She's the only one on that stage that is still currently performing and is doing sold-out venues. And please don't respond to my post that Mary Wilson died. Her career nor the Temptations' careers ever got as big as Diana's. She also got a Kennedy Center Honor. After 60 years of performing she is still selling out shows at age 78. Let the hate go haters.
Wow ..what a performance...57 years on in time. The voices, the moves, the sound.. everything fits!!!
