The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I want to thank the people with the foresight to preserve these recordings, upscale them and make them available here.
I love the footage from these old 1960s tv cameras... then vhs came along and made everything look bad.
Amen
Andrew Solt of SOFA Entertainment bought the rights to the complete library of _The Ed Sullivan Show_ in 1990. _CBS Sunday Morning_ did a segment of this.
I agree..but sum1 oviously wud..this aint that old mate.. its legendary .. but ur rite.. it is gd xx
I totally agree. I love the ed Sullivan show and the Johnny Carson show
At 2:05 Diana's earring falls off and she catches it without skipping a beat. What a professional.
well spotted...you're good..
Mary Wilson distracted me from noticing. Good lord she's gorgeous!
Vince Klortho She is still gorgeous. She is aging backwards.
You are observant!
And at the end of the performance, she tossed the earring to the left. Because, they were going into their melody of hits, I wished they showed this performance.
I love how Diana Ross catches her earing and no one ever notices because she's that professional and graceful. 2:03
And she throws it aside at the end lol
I know I had to watch that a couple times to see when the earring came off and you correct she grab that professionally I'd love that group brings back memories
@@marioescalante4401 and throws it to the side in the end! Yes lol. Throws it fast yet gracefully.
Wow, good catch. It was so seamless that I barely noticed it.
When the hell did she grab it?? 😂😳
Rest in Peace Mary Wilson 😢
I know. I shed a tear. There will Never be another group like The Supremes
Rest in power ♥️
Rest in Peace Mary Wilson

.
The earring fell and she caught it. The smooth performance! What a professional!
The quality of the picture is amazing
The Ed Sullivan show was likely remastered at some point from the original tapes, the crazy thing is they could probably get this kind of clarity out of all kinds of tapes that exist if they get to them in time, all these blurry bleary videos on youtube are just copies of some old vhs tape somebody made off t.v., the original film that the production company actually used are likely as clear as this Ed Sullivan show if they haven't been destroyed lost or neglected. We really need to push for as much of this stuff to be preserved as possible because once those tapes are deteriorated we will lose priceless performances that people will want to watch 100's of years from now. This is epic one of a kind, once in a lifetime stuff. There will never be a time when people don't want to look back and watch the Supremes.
@@LyonsArcade they are posting footage from the 50s that were preserved perfectly, every piece of footage they have needs to be put in a muesuem restored whatever you wanna call it shit is too important to music history. You cant find live performances of hits throughout time performed lived and in great quality.
Recorded originally on 2 inch videotape. That was a very high-quality format, and you rarely see things online that clearly were dubbed from the original, as this clearly was.
Yes
According to the Eyes of a Generation site, at that time the cameras used for the Ed Sullivan Show were Norelco PC-60s. Later on in 1967 Marconi MK-VII cameras were installed.
By 1966, The Supremes were at the top of their game. The only female vocal group in music history that managed to get *twelve* number one hits in just *FIVE YEARS* (1964-1969)
In the era before streaming!
I used to ride my bike to the 5 and dime store to buy the new Motown , or Beatles ,or Beach boys , or Tommy James and the Shondells
Such memories.... we woooore these 45s out! I knew every beat.
And I absolutely love them my favourite female groups of the 60s and 70s. Followed by Martha and the vandellas
..............the only American vocal group, male OR female, that managed to get twelve number one hits..............period!!! And, they did it in just 5 years!
@@kurtsupreme and 22 other times they missed it by only a little bit , like #2or#5 . They were the bomb period!
Florence looks so happy, beautiful and elegant in this performance !! it seems that she was feelin it !! 💓✨ RIP
She probably just finished off a pint of Hennesey!
Florence once said all three Supremes would have a little "belt" or two right before showtime. Probably helped loosen them up and quell any nerves!
Flo was the pretty one. ❤
The men loved her when they went to the Philippines..they thought she was stacked.😉
Mary was called the sexy one, but that title could've gone to Flo. Look at her rhythm as she moves her hips, that's why the guys in the crowd were obsessed with her.
I was a classmate of Diana Ross at Cass Tech in Detroit for 2 years. She’s very talented and came up the hard way.
Diana puts the right amount of soul into every song she sings without over singing, while keeping her sound so clean.
Yesssssss
RIP Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. Mary Wilson past today, February 8, 2021.
The only happiness I can take away from this unexpected and shocking loss is that Mary and Florence are together again. ❤❤
*passed
@@Texaslawhorn so true... such sad news, glad to think these two supreme talents are now reunited
@@jaylene.turner6524 Still wrong. And look at you trying to correct someone. Lol. It’s “passed”.

It was a typo.
I know how to spell,troll.
I'm obsessed with these women!! They are so Iconic!
Same
Legends.
Hand down they killed this performance
Definitely one of my favs. Like most of their performances though, I wish there were more shots of the three of them or just Mary and Flo.
Playback?
2:00 I understand now how the earring catch went so flawlessly... When she's dancing, the earring from her right ear falls, she catches it in the pit of her elbow that is holding the mic, and then finally drops it into her hand as it swings by. That's literally as smooth as it gets, you had to be paying really close attention to catch it live.
And at the very end the throws it offstage, watch carefully
RIP Mary Wilson. This video shows what wonderful, professional performers they all were.
Hard to believe they were all singing live with no backup, and the performance was flawless.
So true! They were all gorgeous and performed without fault... that’s talent! So sad, Mary’s unexpected passing.... I love the supremes, their music will live forever
I didn't even know Mary Wilson had died until I read this today, a year after. We are losing the best generation if singers!
In my opinion the greatest female group of all time. Nobody is close
THOSE GIRLS were ON for every second of this Performance......So Beautiful to see this Energy
I remember a documentary saying that a lot of girl groups fell out of popularity after the Beatles arrived. The Supremes were one of the very few exceptions that continued to see success through the changing landscape.
Flo just has this cool confidence when she’s preforming. Their performance is choreographed but she has a way of making it feel like she’s just out there vibing and doing whatever feels natural.
Then she went too far off stage!...
My favorite Supremes clip. They were at their peak, glamorous and stunning.
I was thinking the Same
you can't hurry love but you can hurry a song
@@hokahey7236 I'll tell the director for next time
Florence is simply stunning and so statuesque. RIP Florence, love for you never dies!!!
The earring catch itself is legendary.
Flo would have turned 77 today. RIP ❤️

Rest In Peace Queen Mary Wilson 💕
Rip Mary Wilson. Ugh my heart is broken.
Such sad news to wake up to rip to a true legend.
Gone way too soon 😥
I feel the same way!
She made me smile back in the day
RIP lovely lady
She was so happy about her upcoming releases.
I was so happy for her then I got the news of her passing................
😭
It just hurts,
but her legacy lives on.
It just sad because
she and Florence will always be overshadowed by Diana.
The backdrop, the dresses, the singing🤍wow to go back in time
Flo was on that night!! A beautiful woman with a voice and style! 🥰
Three of the loveliest ladies to ever grace a stage.
I'm so glad videos like this ,from the Supremes to the Temptation, the Beetles, Mama and Papas, the Doors, Rolling Stones, Aretha, the Stone Ponies, Led Z, 5 Dimension, Associations, Marvin&Tammie, Sonny&Cher, Grace S, the Jacksons, Box Tops, Eric C, Gladys K, Zombies, Turtles, and at lease 200 more I will enjoy until the day I die. Def can't forget Ike&Tina
Miss Ross is such an icon through and through
Professionals!!! Diana didn’t miss a beat when that earring fell.
What gets me is she knew it, must have felt it hit her and slide or roll down. lol
She loved those Earrings.. I have noticed them w other outfits/videos
They look WONDERFUL!
Maybe the most iconic girl group of all time. They had it all: looks, talent and acclaim. But sad to say nothing lasts forever (RIP Florence and Mary) so let the good times roll. Thanks for the great post.
The amazing earring catch!!!
Florence was so beautiful. And lol @ Diana catching her earring at 2:05.
From 1:57 to 2:06 Diana Ross' right earring comes off and slowly rolls to her shoulder and off her back but she didn't flinch at all...such a pro.
And within a year, by 1967, chicks wearing only one dangling earring was the latest fashion craze. Maybe Diana started it here!
Look again, Mrs. Lady D. Caught that ear ring with her left hand nand let the show continue
@@jameskookie You're right!! Good eye!! That makes it even more impressive. Wow.
It's what separates her from the rest. Her stage presence was unmatched!
No....rewatch the video if you can in slow motion..... the earring drops from her right ear to area below her neckline. She then takes her left hand grabs the earring and hold it with left hand until the song is finished, then quickly tosses the earring to the floor before the medley begins.
A lot of people may not know this, but the Supremes had the last number one hit of the 60's....Someday We'll Be Together...Dec 27th 1969.
Wow, cool fact! Would have loved to have seen them live in ‘69
And the FIRST NO. 1 hit of January 1, 1970.
I just fell in Love with these ladies all over again.
As someone who was alive during the heyday of Motown, I will say these ladies were #1 across the board. If you knew they would be appearing on TV, you made sure you watched!
Yes! I remember it all. I even remember when The Miracles were starting out. I remember Motown from the beginning
The Ronettes were kickass too. The amount of talent under the Motown label was/is incomparable. I am so lucky to have lived in the era of Rock and Motown. I was listening to Nights in White Satin this morning feeling so happy for the music of my generation.
Mary Wilson. Gone but never ever forgotten. March 6, 1944 - February 8, 2021 ❤
Flo Bladdard has got to be the most drop dead gorgeous, sophisticated, elegant, regal, and beautiful woman of music of all time. Did I forget gorgeous?

So does Diana
@@MD-rd7bn LOL So does Mary

@@Frnk_3 Exactly. Diana was the prettiest though.
Such a fine performance! Sung well, smiles all around, just enough movement to show their emotion but not distracting. If only performers today could emulate these ladies!
Man I don't think people understand just how good these ladies were....I mean damn THEY ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FEMALE GROUP IN HISTORY! Shut the front door...just beautiful !
We will miss Mary Wilson so much. Goodbye to a legend . We will miss you
Wow!! This performance is better than the studio released single. And it’s just as fun as the performance The Supremes did with “love is like an itching in my heart” also on the Ed Sullivan show. And we have it on video to enjoy over and over and over.
I'm here because of the earring. It still blows me away.
Through out this whole song, I just couldn't get my eyes off of Florence Ballard!😘🥰😍😜
Take her and go, I'll take DIANA and bw very HAPPY.....
Florence’s story is pretty tragic
They killing those background vocals
I was 11 and watching this performance on that Sunday night. Still my favorite Supremes hit.
Diana singing has a way to fill your heart up with so much hope!
Ah so true! Love your comment... I’ve never heard a better description of Diana’s singing! 👏🏼
They sang the hell outta this song. Diana served around 1:30. And Flo and Mary were insync around 1:48. Iove this performance. All the rumors and crazy stories go out the window when i see this perfomnace. They Looked beautifu, smiles were white and bright and their gowns were exceptional as always.
@Eric Smith I love you! lol
Yeah, I love your comment, too. The Supremes were 'killing it' in this video, EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE! 👏👏👏👏👏
The way she effortlessly catches her earring... queen 👑
So sad that Mary Wilson is no longer with us... glad to think the two supreme talents, Mary and Flo are now reunited
They were one of my mom's favorite groups. She always listened to the oldies channel on car trips. Unfortunately, she passed away this past march. I owe her so much, including for my love of motown
The Supremes one of the best r&b groups in motown without a doubt the best of the first rock and roll era
The film quality of this clip is amazing.
Such a good catch of that earring! Not even a flinch 🤣
This video should be included in any professional course in showmanship. All three girls are flawless. Florence was happy and on fire (which was rare considering her mood swings), Mary gorgeous and in sync as always, Diana the epitome of an entertainer at such a young age with her incomparable charisma, the earring drop and then just discarding it at the end of the song is nothing short of mesmerizing. True talent never to be repeated. Cindy Birdsong filled in nicely after Flo's departure. Love me some Supremes!
Flo was the shit, nobody can come close to her!!!!!
What a beauty and talent Flo was! So charismatic, and underappreciated. Your eye goes to Flo. Beautiful spirit.
She was the sex appeal of the group.
No, Mary was the prettiest by far.@@paulalexandermanley6479

A massive trove of digitally restored clips from “The Ed Sullivan Show” will arrive online during the next three years, reviving more than 10,000 long-buried performances and guest appearances from the iconic variety show.
The global streaming project launches today with seven clips on CZcams and other platforms - a Motown-dominated batch of videos that includes performances by Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5 and Temptations and Gladys Knight & the Pips.
They’re the tip of a cultural iceberg contained in the “Ed Sullivan Show” archives: The Sunday night program ran from 1948 through 1971 on CBS, piping the rock ‘ n’ roll revolution, Hollywood glitz and Detroit’s Motown sparkle into American living rooms alongside Broadway, opera, vaudeville, comedy and novelty acts.
About time
WOW!!!! I grew up on the Ed Sullivan show!!!
Young people often don't understand how huge shows like Ed Sullivan and Tonight Show in its Here's Johnny heyday were. Closest thing today would be Super Bowl where a huge percentage of the population was watching the same show only it was every Sunday night for Sullivan show. A new group getting on was priceless.
When Diana Ross catches her falling right earring without a glitch-this is why she was great! 😜🤔🥰
They look and sound fantastic. Mary Wilson is divine.
Total class- and what a song!
I love Diana Ross, she has the most beautiful smile. I would love to meet her and sing with her. I love to hear her sing. God Bless you Diana.

Diana had the voice and charm, Mary Wilson was drop dead beautiful, FLORENCE IS JUST MAGIC in her personality. So sad she got so burned by Gordy and ruined her life. A tragic end to a very wonderful person-she actually formed the group.
From the time I was 14 (I’m nearly 17 now) I was infatuated with Mary even though she was much older she was still gorgeous. I still can’t believe she’s gone. Love you Mary. 💔

@@mic6434 And proof is in media coverage of Mary's passing that it wasn't just about Diana. When you have a loving tribute in the NY Times, several minutes devoted to her on all 3 major networks (morning and night broadcasts), every cable channel, coverage in every major and local newspaper, every local TV station, media around the world, it renders the argument moot as to whom was the favorite. Fans fell in love with all 3 women. Nowhere this week did any reporter, commentator, or anchor reference "Diana Ross & The Supremes" they said Mary Wilson of The Supremes and called Diana her bandmate. Mary finally got the respect she deserved. Nobody and I mean nobody talked about Diana Ross in the way they talked about Mary this week. They treated Mary first among equals. RIP Miss Mary Wilson. The beauty of growing up during this era, I was in elementary school when this song came out in the 60's. But still the 70's ushered in songs that were no longer 2 minutes an change. The 70's gave us 4 minutes and longer.
The 70s were trying to get pop music to catch up with all the other genres which had songs that were at least 10 minutes minimum, lol.
The beautiful Supremes. I love how Diana catches her earring ( around 2:05..) so carefully after it fell off her ear so calmly you barely noticed it.😊
