“How do two brothers get into the nail care business?” This is the single most common question people ask us. There’s a long and rocky version but we’ll give you the short one. We have our fearless and unconventional mother, Young Salo, to thank. With a single-minded entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to start her own business at the age of 49. She had a passion for the nail industry and we did everything in our power to support her. In the end, this is a family business.
Greg, the older brother, became a licensed nail technician after switching gears from fire fighter’s training. He is energy personified and has a true passion for developing the best professional nail care products and education. Habib is the younger brother. He jumped in a few years later; taking a detour from medical school and a life in music. He brings his own creative mind for business, marketing and strategy. Unexpectedly, we are a perfect team.
Today, more than 20 years later, Young Nails Inc., is a professional nail care manufacturing company exporting to over 40 countries worldwide and distributing domestically to over 3000 stores. We’re respected for our next-level product innovation and education. Our mission is to bring you the best quality products and we’ll show you how to use them with incredible results. It’s really that simple.
Welcome to the Young Nails family!

How about this… “Let’s normalize client care!” I prefer to work quickly and efficiently, but at the same time, I want my client to have exactly what they want on their nails. I give myself enough time to do what I know I can do in the allotted time. And I charge accordingly.

For me, I like to enjoy the process. I enjoy the time as a customer so much. My hair dresser takes hours and always has. I’ve been seeing him faithful for 35 years. I enjoy relaxing, chit chatting, no rush. I also know I’m probably very unique in that sense. Most ppl are in a rush and that’s just how the World works. Period. You have to be able to move quickly for the majority of clients. Now the long YT videos doing nails, I love bc again, I enjoy relaxing and the whole process of it all.

I don't know where this idea of longer services came from but from an ex-salon patron I really wish there was a normalizing of longer sets because nearly every shop I went to sliced up my cuticles and left me bleeding. I have kind of narrow nail beds (which may be abnormal) but I feel like the pressure to get me in & out leads to rushed techs who meant well but didn't feel like they could take the time to adjust for me.
Normalization doesn't necessarily mean "everyone do this this way" (that would be more like standardize) it can mean, "this is a thing that can be acceptable, too." If we can flex the expectations we have in some areas, more ppl can get what they need, and I think folks who need that expansion would generally be willing to pay what it's worth.
For so many of us, the speed really does come at the sacrifice of quality out here in these streets 😄.

Yes I completely agree let's normalize the length shape artwork or what the client ask for to determine how long a set might take. Simple to extensive because I've done sets that have taken me an hr I've done sets where what the client asked for took 4 to 5 hrs 4xl 3d artwork encapsulation

We really need to show customer care, building rapport, talking with them, making eye contact when you can, always be professional. At my work, I do a lot of things pre checking guests in. If I know it's a guest that prefers certain things in their room, I go set that up. Especially if they are a regular guest. Time is important for everyone, to the client and to you. I really think when you show great customer care, it pays off. Today all I did was help a guest find an airport l, print out the step by step directions. They tipped me 50 dollars. Time matters but so does respect. I say that to each person I train. Every person that walks through that door should be treated with respect and dignity. Make them feel welcome. I always get compliments on how nice and respectful I am to our guests.

EVERY CLIENT IS NOT FOR EVERY NAIL TECH AND, VICE VERSA. IF YOU'RE GOOD TO YOUR CUSTOMERS? YOUR CLIENTELE WILL WORK ITSELF. "ALL BUSINESS IS NOT GOOD BUSINESS." I PERSONALLY AM NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY. I AM AN ARTIST. PLUS, I LIKE HELPING PEOPLE. TIME AND MONEY IS NOT EVERYTHING. COMING FROM A PERSON WHO GREW UP AROUND THE BUSINESS.❤

  • @juicyparsons

Part of this is personality.....yes, time is money- but working at a fast pace is creating some pressure and everyone isn't gonna be the same. I'll take a *little* less money instead of packing a day completely full of clients but I'm investing that time in myself, cleaning, further education, social media, etc. Speed improves with experience but trust me I hear the horror stories from the salons that overbook and rush, too

Context is everything! Great example Habib! I don't want to wait 4 weeks for my YN order...but if I lived overseas then 4 weeks might be 👍
An XL set is going to take a little more time than an active length french manicure.
    Good topic! ❤

Communication is needed. If I am a client in for a fill, and I am in a hurry that day, I will communicate that. If I am at a salon and the nail tech is newer - they should communicate that they might not be the fastest tech. Just wanting an excuse to get out of the house- time doesn't matter. It takes how long it takes. Unless you are getting 6 inch encrusted claws, 5 hours should not be the norm! Bottom line find a salon that works with your time and budget.

Ok here is one for you... Can we normalize people properly booking their appointments? I work in a spa that also offers enhancements like acrylic and dip (so we do more than just mani/pedi's) and 8 times out of 10 they either dont know what type of enhancement they have on or what type of appointment they need. Or a husband or significant other books the appointment as a surprise, chooses the mani-pedi option and the guests will come in with dip that needs to be removed and a new set added on. That's apples and oranges regarding appointment time booking. Now I will say part of it falls on the front desk staff as well. Is there a training program for people who don't know how our industry works when they get a job doing front desk work?

Sounds like y'all need a staff meeting, and is there a way you can change/update your service menus? We have had to do both- updating the descriptions of services and/or offering add-ons that make sense from the client perspective-AND just showing your clients how to book or offering to do it for them. It might take time but you'll get it if you all work on it together I bet

Yes I ageee.. TIME does matter! And our clients do want to get in and get out fairly quickly… my clients start getting antsy and I usually give 1 hour per client depending on service. I don’t do nail art anymore either… 1 hour per person seems to be perfect. ❤

I’m disabled and new so I’m working on building my basics while building my speed.
I know it’ll come with time, but I can’t say it’s not frustrating when it takes me forever to do a design.
Some days that’s just how my service will be. I won’t be able to help that but what I will do is give fab customer service with the best chit chat and laughter.
I just know going in I’ll have bad days so I know I’m not going to over book, I’m not going to make as much because I won’t be able to squeeze as many clients in in a day either.
And that’s ok. I like doing nails so I’d rather do less than none.

  • @AGrimmEncounter

This is always such an interesting topic to me as a disabled person (physically) who does nails. What I've come to realize is really just that it's different for _everyone._ The point is to take the time and do the work to be as efficient as _you personally_ can be, and to be _honest_ about that. There's so many of us comparing ourselves negatively to _everyone_ else. That's not healthy, and it just doesn't work! That's not how you get better. The only thing that'll do is make you worse. Be respectful of people's time _and_ of your own realistic ability. It's never either/or, and it's more than possible to do both!

I'm the slowest technician at the salon 😢. I'm meticulous, and my work has never gotten a complaint. I just want to be faster though !! I've tried a few things to speed up , and it has helped some. I feel if I cut out anything else my work will suffer for it . Ahhhh help!!¡!!

I'm right there with you, I'm new , in salon 6 months, takes me 2 hours for full set and 1 1/2 for fill. Been told I'm a perfectionist with my nail sets... quality over quantity

    • @youngnailsinc
      @youngnailsinc  Před rokem +5

That’s completely understandable. Sometimes the things you can do for speed are done before or after the services so you don’t have to change your process.
Those could include seasoning your files when you have downtime, seasoning your sanding band before the clients gets there, setting up baskets of your base products needed for acrylic or hard gel so you just grab it when the client comes in or having enough sets of tools so you can clean them all at the end of the day instead of having to do it between clients.
These may not be able to be done right away but these could help.

Thank you so much , I appreciate all of you more than you know. You've taught me so much! I've watched every YN video, all the shorts, and make orders when I have the cash 💸. All my clients love being pampered with the quality. Everyone else uses bulk nail supplies that aren't the highest quality. So they notice the difference. They are remarkably talented 👏, but won't budge on supplies. Oh well more for me MooouuHahaHaha 😅

Makeup Artist gone nail tech here. TIME IS MONEY. Our clients don’t necessarily want a 5 hour appt. The clients that DO want that, need to book standing appt whenever AND they get charged accordingly and they know it. 90% of my clients want to be in and out as fast as possible. My makeup clients are very similar as well. It’s interesting for sure 😊

  • @bhonestestheticsnails4640

Yes time management is important. I like my clients very much, not for a 5 hr set though. They too don't want to sit in the chair for that long. Let's normalize technician care. I've had my business since 1998. I'm 4 weeks post-op from carpal tunnel surgery on my dominant hand. Let's talk a correct table, 2 lamps, good client seating and an E file. I book 1 1/2hr appointments,it gives me clean up, check out/rebooking and that client who always straggles along, who can't make up their mind. I want to enjoy their service as well. Keep up the great work.
