On a different Young Nails BizTalk video, an artist (not nail related) posted this philosophy about when they are coming up with pricing; "if it doesn't make you uncomfortable when you tell someone the price, then it's not enough". I love that so much because it reminds me that this is My business. I can't feel bad for charging for my education, time and products. Nails are a luxury not a necessity. I'm wondering if people question Restaurants, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Xfinity, Mercedes-Benz, etc. None of those Brands are a necessity or a requirement, they are a choice like having your nails or your hair done. I am a brand name nail tech, PERIOD! If you don't value the expertise of a professional nail technician, then don't get your nails done and don't speak on the subject. It's pretty simple 🤷🏾♀️
I love this video series! You set your prices based on how much things cost and how much you need to make. If someone doesn’t agree with that, that’s not business you want anyway. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to be firm on how much you cost. Sure, someone could get their nails done by someone else, but they aren’t YOU. People pay to have an experience with YOU, and YOU ARE WORTH IT! ❤
No lies told here! 💯 Habib told me at the Premier Show 4 years ago to raise my prices by $5. I was scared to do it since I had only been in business 2 years at that time. I didn’t lose a single client! Some even asked why I didn’t charge more for my services because they thought I did great work!
Fast forward to now - I still struggle with nail art and charging for it but it’s because I feel that my clients want fast art - yet some of the things they see on social media (Pinterest, Instagram) are not quick nail designs. I don’t want to keep them in my studio longer then an hour for each service. So I have been working on my speed for nail art but always get anxious when they ask me to do designs I have not practiced or I feel would take too long. So I’m trying to figure out a solution for this problem because my clients don’t want to go anywhere else; they want me to offer nail art and ask for it often. I guess I just have to get my confidence and speed up.

I completely agree. You have to look at the products that you use that you had to purchase, and when i say productsi mean all your products hard gel, acrylic powders, gel polish, glitter, mylar, crystals, nail tips, nail forms, stickers, gel for hand painted art work nail foils, gem glue your efile, nail lamp, dust collector, and all the tools and brushes you need to apply these products. And most importantly, your time. And you have to repurchase these items, so all that plays a factor in pricing. If you do not charge according then the money is going to come out of your pocket to replace and repurchase items or to buy new products and design items versus the money coming from the business where it should come from. Not your personal pocket. So, I definitely treat my nail business as a business. And any other business I have as a business, and I charge accordingly for everything I do.

Some one once told me to set my prices and keep them realistic, however we can't assume the client can’t afford it. This is where our guilty feelings come from. If the prices are realistic and we are up front about add on pricing the client then has the opportunity to make the decision to add on or not. No guilt!!

I agree getting your nails done isn’t a necessity it’s a luxury. I know that’s not your exact words but I pay for my hair which is a lot of money it’s not a necessity I pay for the luxury or keeping up my hair.
QUESTION: prosthetic hand, fingers and nails training model YOU USE. I've watched many of your videos. You've often used a specific fingernail model tool in demonstrating "how to" on placing acrylics, gels, designs, etc. I want to buy a model to learn and practice on. Ebay has 2 types. One type is like the one you have, and one type is a more life-like silicone type. Can you please tell me WHY you use the one you have and how is it better than the other kind.???? I'm truly pinching pennies and I don't want to buy one and then realize I shouldn't have. I LOVE your videos. THANK YOU so much. Can you please tell me your opinion of the hand manaquin you use ?

How can you start implementing the processes of this while you're still an enthusiast (no payments) or while you're in school?
It's actually really important to get in this mind-set even before you have your own business. When you are in school and working on clients there, get in the habit of talking with them about the prices and add on's. This way, once you are are charging on your own, you'll feel comfortable having the conversations. Most schools will encourage you to add on services and they should have set pricing in place already.
If you are an enthusiast and just practicing on friends/family, these people may be potential clients once you do get licensed. Set up a price list that you want to charge once you are licensed and let your "practice" clients know that these will be your prices when you do get licensed. This way, they'll know what to expect and there won't be any surprises.

Im one of them its very upsetting especially while doing the client , the client just says straight out you're expensive I've seen cheaper prices so on.... :(
That’s when you say, that’s absolutely right, there are some that can charge you more and some that’ll charge you less, but let me explain to you why that is exactly, you see it’s because there are levels to this art form, and the level/ kind of job you’re gonna get is gonna be directly correlated with how much you pay for it, bc you are/ should be anyway getting exactly what you pay for, and if that’s not what you get then you just don’t return to that nail tech a second time. And so, that being said, naturally you’ll find both cheaper (and therefore lower quality sets) than mine, and you’ll find some that charge even more, and this is bc they’re probably better/ faster/ more efficient than I am at one or more things right now, so they’re able to charge even more than I do since rn their time is worth more than mine simply bc they have more skill than I do rn, and that’s just how it/ the world works.
A Mercedes costs more than a Honda while a Honda costs more than a Ford fiesta. Time is money, honey and you get what you pay for, so if you know somewhere cheaper and you like/ are just as satisfied with what you get there for that price then please, be my guest.😊 But this quality and my time is worth this much, period. Because the truth is that the service we provide is far from a right, in fact its a luxury, a luxury reserved for only a select few that can actually afford it.
Yeah I just had a semi similar situation in the family, you guys have seen in the comments my husband bought me a desk so I would have an area to do nails, mother in law had 2 guy come he did half of it broke a piece and left, he will not answer the phone or texts. So we're out that money, last Wednesday I'm at work 5th evening shift with a trainee. Mother in law calls to tell me that she found someone else to put the desk together correctly, I'm like ok, she says he will be there tomorrow after noon, I said Friday would be better because I had yo work, husband has CP he's not going to be able to get up answer door etc, she literally talks over me and says well he will be there tomorrow after noon, I said it's no good tomorrow, she rushed of the phone. So I ask my husband if he'd talked to his mom, he said yes and told her that Thursday was no good, she hangs up on him, he calls back, she hangs up again. I'm still in shock like wth... she didn't even talk to us about it, is still mad. At me because I asked her to wait 1 day later. We just give up, Friday comes 10:30 day off were still in bed, someone Knicks hard on the door I'm getting up tripping over stuff in my night gown, answering the door ot is a man and his daughter telling me they are there to put my desk together. At that point I was just like #### it, so he's there for around 2 hours, desk is together. I sent her a thank you message. And called her 2 times previously, no reply no answer, I said the only thing that was bothersome is that you did not talk to us about it first, you can't pencil in appointments on someone else's schedule. She asks me did you give him any money. I said no because Wednesday you said you told him to come see you when you get paid, you also did not tell us if he was coming Friday, when I spoke to you Wednesday you said afternoon, it was not afternoon, I was in night gown no coffee yet, had you let us know anything we would have given him money. I said I told you Wednesday how Chris and I both felt about it you do whatever you want and are somehow upset with me. She said I'm not upset, I said yeah you kind of are, you hung up on your son twice. Because we said please wait til Friday. If I'd done that to you it would not fly. When we sat boundaries for our home and our family, you were not exempt from that. We asked for the smallest respect and you are hanging up on us and being a smart@@@. You can be upset all you like, keep tripping on your lip that us down to the floor, since when is it ok to tell other people what they are going to do because someone else made plans without asking. Common sense answer, never. It's not ok. She keeps pushing boundaries all the time. Like one time she came down unannounced n sat our cats tail on fire. I was on fire mad, I said you better be glad ot is you sitting there because if it were anybody else I'd be ready to fight. Physically. I said only psychopaths harm animals and children. She has a cat of her own I feel sorry for it. Anyways, people seem to like you when you are a push over and let them do or have what they want, the second you ask for a small amount of consideration. You are chopped liver! 😂

That's a great question though, right .... she has a bright pink hat that has B**** on it. In my mind why would anybody do that to a cat pr a person or any other living creature, or maybe she wanted me to say something to her. I don't know. But the past 5 days have been great. With her theatrics drama and pouting.

What do you charge when you're not licensed and you're getting your skillset up? I know I have some skill but not a pro yet. YET!... I do have guilt to charge them cuz I'm not licensed
Check with your state board. In most all states, if you get caught charging for nails without a license, you can be fined and not allowed to get a license. Don't listen to the camp that says take donations. The law sees that as charging. Find friends and family to work on. You don't need the headache of someone calling on you if want to get you in trouble.

Like others said, if you're in a place where a license is required, you can't legally charge anyone.
Don't do it, it isn't worth the possible consequences.
If a license isn't REQUIRED, then charge based on the quality of your work.
There was a post on Instagram and the women were literally protesting. And wishing that nail technician bring back the 25.00 prices. They were saying so many bad things to make us feel guilty for charging above 75.00. The woman who post this post all her LV bags and luxury vacations yet she says I will purchase press on nail from SHEIN.
A new set of nails take’s typically about 2 hours (depending). So basically people are wanting us to make a lil over $12 an hour and be able to provide for our families, run a business, buy nail products etc?!?!? It’s not possible. How many people you know are willing to make $12 an hour? It’s completely ridiculous.
Paying so many taxes feels like I’m already doing charity work with my nails RIP

Are you going to pay me, oh I though you aren't a tech I'm not but I'm providing all of the products to do you a service. I'm doing this on my personal time on one of my not so many days off of work.
Please be careful doing this it's all good till someone gets an infection and sue's you

Quality work isn't overpriced, it just may be out of your budget.
Which is totally fine, but please don't try to shame quality professionals who have paid a lot for school, continuing education, product etc. for charging our worth.
Our products have gone up by an average of 200% in the last few years.
Cost of living has increased exponentially.
We have to pay self-employment taxes at a significantly higher rate than regular jobs, we have to have insurance (both general liability AND health/dental/vision), we have to cover our own 401K, and we don't get PTO.
Not to mention we provide free therapy to almost every client we have at some point or another.
Nails are a luxury service. It's fine to not be able to afford someone else to do them, and it's actually awesome you can do your own. I think that's great, and I hope you continue to grow and become more and more talented at it!
Here’s a little tip form the human behavioral psychology side of things that should really help you guys out here struggling with this.
If you’re gonna get real friendly with the client (talk a lot/ learn their all their kids names etc) then they need to be settling up at the end either “at the front”/ at the register with the perceived “manger” of sorts, just as long as it’s with someone/ anyone else EXCEPT you. If you’re real buddy buddy with them then they just need to feel like they aren’t even paying YOU (the friend) at the end, making it almost appear as though the amount they’re being charged is out of your hands entirely, and who they’ll actually be paying is “the business” who appears to employ me😉 and that the business/ my employer will just be paying me/ giving me a cut of what she gave them at the front at a later date/ whenever it is that I get paid.😉 Even if it’s you that owns the business and “the manager” is a actually just another nail tech/ or just a friend that hangs out up there or whatever. Works either way.😁😜✌🏼🫶🏼
