When my uncle saw it, my dad’s cousin, he was angry and called out everything he didn’t like about it. If I started to get tribal tattoos and I run around saying I created this design. I bet your uncle and dad would be upset. That's the point not watching a movie.

    Loni became sensitive to this topic when Adrienne used the example of Loni using Asian people's hair. Once Tamera wanted to ask a question, she said "we have to wrap up". You can't get mad at different races assimilating a hairstyle if you yourself are doing the same thing, it's hypocrisy. She can rock her natural hairstyle if she wanted to, she simply chooses not to because she doesn't want to. People should be allowed to express themselves without having to explain every single little thing.

    • @MsChandler7
      @MsChandler7 Před 5 lety +58

      Assimilation implies that the choice to look more like the European Standard of beauty was done as a means to survive. Women born with naturally straight hair, can wash their hair, let it air dry and go look for a job with no problem. Black Women can't do that.

People are more accepting nowadays so people also need to stop playing the victim all the time (unless they’re actually experiencing racism themselves then of course it’s okay)

    It’s deeper than just a hairstyle. Anyone can wear their hair however they choose. What happened to Adrienne’s sister was ridiculous and uncalled for. My issue is the historical mockery and rejection of black women’s features and hair (big lips, big ass, cornrows, etc...). On the flip side, the Kardashians are celebrated for having the exact same look. It sends a message saying, “We love everything about the black culture...as long as it’s from non-black people”. I’m not blaming the Kardashian’s. It’s a systemic issue. They are just profiting off of it. Tyga even stated in a previous interview that he gave Kylie advice to profit off of black culture. It is what it is.

      Nanafia1 I think what many of their discussions have failed to acknowledge is the historical and systemic racial oppression tied in with these topics. Experiences for whites and non whites in america are different, and also come with their own set of rules making their conversations very limited. They really need to remember that part of American history to put these terms in the right context.

A white women decides she wants to rock an Afro, dreads or cornrows and all of a sudden it’s cool, popular, “the new trend”.. Why wasn’t the Afro, dreads or cornrows viewed in that light when the black woman wore it. Another thing, a white women can not argue with a black women about stealing “her”hair because if it weren’t for hot combs and straight weaves that black women could be out of a job and that’s the difference. The black women wore “your” her because it was what was accepted, it pays the bills.. the white women rocks the Afro, cornrows, exc because it’s cool. I blame the industry. Smh 🤦🏾‍♀️

The afro does NOT just happen, the hair must be manipulated into what people see. The hair itself grows out of the scalp in a way that makes it EASIER to create what is seen but the afro HAS to be manifested, you can't just wake up with an afro. iT's an intentional hair style. And Yeah... the world is... the world wants to steal our creativity aka the way we dress, act, talk, look, style our hair, sing, dance, walk and everything else deemed "cool" because black people do it or they saw someone with lighter skin (who STOLE it from a black person) by copying the lighter skinned person and then doing what a black person was originally doing but got no credit for creating. In fact, this cultural stealing is happening on EVERY LEVEL except FINANCIALLY, unless the black person is a successful athlete or rapper. That is stealing our creativity. Why doesn't the world say... I want to dress and look like a hispanic or whatever type of human they were born from. Why is it that even people who hate black people want to be "cool" by copying blackness...Even in hispanic and other types of gangs they are talking and acting like black men and women. I don't see anybody in a hispanic gang wear sombreros or their traditional ethnic clothing. Nope, all the gangs who are not black, trying to act black. I actually got made fun of for how much I love black culture. It is fun, it is beautiful and it is so accepting and out there. • @alaylamone_609
      @alaylamone_609 Před 4 lety +3

      Facts, at this day and age, and as a black woman, I believe we can all be petty. Although some people do actually culturally appropriate (I am sorry if I am saying this wrong), I believe a lot of us don't understand that some people just think that a hairstyle is pretty and they want to try it. Like Jeannie said, some people just grew up in the culture, and some people like Adrienne's sister want to wear the hairstyle. On the other hand, if all you do is get money off of a certain type of look which is not yours, I can understand the cultural appropriation. However, when a person suddenly gets a hairstyle that is not naturally theirs, some people immediately call it cultural appropriation when they desire a hairstyle too. And I know this might offend some people, but some black women get/ want straight hair, and every kind of hair has culture, but you do not see many people calling it cultural appropriation. Some people just want a hairstyle, but just because you are apart of one culture with one hairstyle, doesn't give people the right to say you culturally appropriated when you just want a hairstyle that you yourself don't have. Again, if you only wear a certain look because you get money off it and claim it as your natural self, that is a different story. To wrap this all up, I just believe some people just want a hairstyle without a bad intention. You don't have to be a certain culture to wear a hairstyle as long as there is no lie in your look. Do what you want with your hair. If you want dreads, get them. If you want straight hair, do it. Let some people appreciate culture, and lets stop saying everyone is appropriating culture when it is not true.

Someone who is black could’ve been wearing a whole Gucci ensemble with some Balenciaga thigh high boots to match and they get called names... but the moment a Kardashian’s wears the same thing they praised... and I think that’s where the true issue is... it’s not them... it’s th people who are critics and are biased

      True. But with the straight hair thing I feel like if your hair can create a style then it is yours. When black people straighten their hair it still does not look like white people or Asian people's hair so I don't consider straight theirs. They can also try mimicking a real Afro like kinky Afro and it will still not manage to look like it. So I don't attribute straight her to them unless you are wearing a wig. The closest they could get to an Afro may be 3a to 3b or 3c brushed out completely like Kendall in the photo. Or some curled up short hair.

    • @ccmor884
      @ccmor884 Před 5 lety +22

      Well for one, there is an obvious difference when it comes to power dynamics. Second, white beauty is constantly validated in the media. So for an African American to adapt to a style mostly associated with a white person couldn’t possibly result in appropriation for the opposite side. And lets not forget that for centuries black people as well as other cultures (Native Americans to be specific) have had to adapt in order to survive in a world that wasn’t meant for them. If that is a bit to much to understand, think about plagiarism. So let’s say that someone starts to copy Beyoncé. Her most iconic performances, singing styles, etc. because Beyoncé is such a huge figure and visible in the media, we can all identify her influences if it were to be replicated. But let’s say Beyoncé starts copying underground artists performances and adapting it as her own. If those artist don’t speak up, how is anyone suppose to know that it was stolen? And that every amount of blood, sweat, and tears that those artist put into their work was pointless because it’s now associated with the bigger performer. That’s the kind of frustration AA feel when white people start to adapt the same features that they once put AA down for AND on top of that, they don’t credit them! Hint: The Plagiarism comparison.

But that’s not because we want to be, that’s because we HAVE to be. For years we had to allow these things to be swept under the rug and ignore the clear racism that was done to us in order to essentially survive in this society. One of the things we were also forced to do is something called “assimilate.” What I’m noticing is that people in the comments and in general keep bringing up the whole “weave” thing not realizing that they’re negating the fact that black and white women do NOT get the same starting line. We’re far behind, so in order to “survive” and catch up so to speak, we have to do something called “assimilate.” White woman don’t need to do that so when they jack off our original styles and culture that we had to give up just to catch up with them without giving our ancestors due credit, it’s hurtful and disrespectful. Because when you see your own culture not negatively affecting any others’ starting line but your own, it stings like no other. Had it not been a “trend” and people were still being ridiculed for it other races would not dare to have that hairstyle. It is unfair to take someone’s culture and use it as a trend. I’m sure Adrienne’s sister didnt have any bad intentions but I see where people are coming from. I am from Pakistan and mehndi (henna) has ALWAYS been apart of my culture, and I would get made fun of for having it, to the point where I would just cover up my hands.. NOW henna is such a big trend and everyone has it, but if people were still getting roasted for having it, then those same people getting it would not dare to have henna on their hands. Im not American, so maybe I dont grasp the emotions from both sides fully, but since when do we all have to stay "in our lane". The world always has evolved because we "copied" each other. If one country invented something that didnt mean the others couldn't use it. So by all means if I (I have straight hair) want to tease my hair into a big "fluff" (i don't have hair to have an afro) then why not??? And if a curly haired person wants to have straight hair then why not??? This is a colorful world. Let's keep it that way. There are no "lanes" and no "credit" is due.

The whole thing with Kendall Jenner’s is about the brand name to get money. And this is where it become appropriate. Why not put a women with that natural hair in the shoot. If I start a trend and 10 years go by and it comes back up don’t say this person created this trend. Say this person BROUGHT BACK this trend. Y’all out here acting like it’s that hard 🤣🤣

Why would you work for someone who would not hire you base on your hairStyle? I am sure there are a lot of companies out there who see you for more than your hair. I get where loni is coming from but you can’t expect everyone walking around with a disclaimer. If you get upset with someone other than black wearing dreads without even knowing what their intentions are but solely for the fact that he/she looks like those who had done that to make money off of you then that is just petty and unreasonable. Curly headed people were (are) looked down upon for their naturally curly hair and forced to conform to the naturally straight’s ideology of beauty or what they found socially acceptable to find jobs. These hair styles are african and is tied to the African culture (black africans). And straight and blonde hair isn't exclusive to the white race. People forget that there are many different forms of these cultural styles though, like there's more than one kind of afro, and it's not subjected to just poc, there are different kinds of braids. Many black people don't grow curly hair, I know black girls that grow straight hair, I don't know anyone that doesn't enjoy the look of bone straight hair and there are many ways to get it but it's still straight hair in the end. I just feel like the world has gotten to be overly sensitive and it's part of the reason that we don't have much evolution as people, and while I understand what each woman at the table is saying I just feel like does not always have to be that deep. We create more problems than there should be when look to deeply into every little thing.

    Looking at that pic of Kendall's hair made me feel good. I'm Jewish and growing up my hair looked like that all the time and I hated how it looked and wished I could have easy straight hair. It used to make me feel bad about myself because when i would see the models and actresses they didnt usually have frizzy bushy hair like me. That look reminds me of what I grew up with but it looks glamorous and I wish famous women back then had taken pics with their hair like that. It would've made me feel more confident as a girl. Needless to say I dont see it as a purely African American hairstyle and that's what Adrienne was trying to point out in the beginning.

    Appropriation is loving the culture and not the PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Questions to consider when wondering about appropriation are:
    Do you talk and befriend people of the culture?
    Is there a disconnect with your communication with the people? Do you acknowledge where you got something from?
    It's a big deal with Black people because...we are excluded from the magazines and fashion!!!

They enjoy when others wear their traditional styles and eat their food, they find it flattering, however their people do well here and there isn’t much resentment because they’re usually the wealthier ones among white people.
