- Use a jawless harmonic balancer puller and a couple of medium to large-sized wrenches to remove the dampener and a tool that can be rented at Autozone an OEM 27306 to reinstall. You may need to remove the fan shroud, electric fan, or hydraulic cooling fan to make room to remove the vibration dampener (harmonic balancer) or to be able to get the puller or install the tool in there depending on the make and model year of the vehicle.

This guy's videos are always on point. He is an awesome teacher. He gives all the details to include tool sizes, part numbers, specs and tips along the way. Guys knowledge base is huge. Be interesting to see how many millions he'd save owners by teaching them to do things themselves. Thanks Teach! This video is going to save me about $350. Much appreciated! Good bless you and yours!
Thank you. That's got to be the nicest comment anyone has ever made. I really appreciate that. 😁
Man you just saved me a 20 mile trip to the auto parts store thank you
Glad I could help.
I don’t subscribe to many auto channels, I use them a lot however I usually don’t need any more information then I go searching for but the fact that you specifically went out of your way to a junkyard to show me how to use this tool..you sir are the real MVP. Subscribe and like!
Brilliant, truly. Was about to go buy another puller, but this method worked perfectly thanks to the slots in the pulley. 🍻
Thank you I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.😊👍
Yes same here just bought that tool didn’t realize wrong one for jeep, those wrenches with the tool saved me from buying another. Thanks!
Im mechanically inclined and very capable of anything i become interested in so i tried my hand in installing my whole new timing chain setup from jeep 4.7 jumping time and also had to replace drivers head from bent valves, never did anything like this but i was eager to learn and a couple of your videos watched on repeat over and over until I fully processed your information and the drive to do it and it turned out to be very aggravating but yet so simple at the same time and out of everyone's videos I watched you were the only guy who could get through to this inexperienced part time shade tree mechanic, im certain theres way more stories out there as well but i personally wanted to thank you because youll never how many people appreciate your dedication and time if we dont tell you our side of the story so thank you Sir
Thank you I really really appreciate that, makes all the hard work of shooting a video and editing and posting worth it.
I'm glad you like and find the content helpful.😁
The MAN the MYTH the Martinbuilt!!!
I love it!! You are a great teacher!! Thank you for ALL your time sharing your skills.
Thank you, James, I really do appreciate that. 😊
After screwing with this for several hours. Checked this video. Project complete in 5 minutes. And I have watched several other of your videos. THEY are awsome and helped tremendously. Thank You!!!
Thank you so much, Bob, I really appreciate that.😁
Hi Martin. Just subscribed last night, but have watched most of your vids. Absolutely incredible!!! You have given me several ideas for my 04 WJ Overland. Keep up the great work!! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge.
Hi Bryan, appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching and subscribing I appreciate it.
Thank you Martin! Your videos are always helpful and appreciated!! Keep up the great work
I just used your example and it worked beautifully. Much appreciated, especially since the small car is still in the garage waiting for parts and I needed to fix the water pump and seal on the truck fast.
Glad to hear it worked out for you.
Worked perfectly. My wrenches were starting to bend before it came loose. Made me a little nervous. Lol
I like how you reappeared at the end
This old dog learns a new trick! Thanks Martin!👍👍
Happy to help
Martin is the man the myth the legend
Top notch mechanic that knows how to explain to spec and detail
Thank you, I really appreciate that.
You are such a blessing you've helped me with the confidence to do this by myself! Keep it up!
Thank you I really appreciate that. i'm glad you found it helpful.
Thanks for the video sir! Very helpful :)
I'm glad everything works so much easier for people on CZcams than it does for me. I go to remove the tensioner to replace the water pump, and that bolt snaps, and now I may be able to salvage the timing cover but I have to remove it(Or I'll get one from a junkyard that's in good shape).... But when I put on /my/ puller for the balancer and use bigger wrenches than you are here, they just flex like they're about to snap. WTF!
Sorry to hear you're having so many problems. Make sure that your wrenches are not going behind the water pump pulley or other objects that would make your wrenches Flex I've had this happen to me before. On the tensioner bolt thing I think I would try removing the cooling fan and possibly the radiator to give your self some room to where you can get a drill and an easy out in there. I would also use some heat around where the bolt snapped off before trying the easy out
@@martinbuilt I got the green OEM tools 3 jaw low profile puller off Amazon for about 35 bucks, pulled the harmonic balancer off with no effort. I think the problem is when it's stuck on there a bit more than yours, the wrenches create more of a spring effect and that kinda inhibits getting them off.
As for the tensioner bolt, I heated it with acetylene and tried a lot of things, ended up drilling it but it wasn't perfectly straight, so I'm having a friend fix the hole for me. Apparently this is a common issue though. People have apparently had to replace timing covers because of this, which I could get used at a junkyard for about $40.
Anyway, thanks for responding! :)
Wow.... What an incredible video! Best I’ve ever seen!
Wow, thanks, glad you enjoyed it so much. 🤗👍
Hey thanks bro love the content!
This was an awesome explanation and gave me the confidence to fix my truck!
Thank you. I appreciate that I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
Great Video Martin! I installed an ATI balancer on my WJ! took forever to get it on special order but I love it!
That's great to hear. I think I'll put my order in tonight.
I ordered mines from Summit Racing and then waited on ATI to build it since they sell very few of the 4.7L balancers , I have pics posted over on Jeep forum dot com
Just ordered mine from airram.com Since he designed it for ATI I feature I'll show him some gratitude and purchase it from him. I'll check out the Jeep forum. Thank you.
Great videos! Like having a friend who's done it before guiding me
Thank you, Glad it was helpful!
Hey Martin fantastic tip man !
My 04 Grand Cherokee went ammo only two of the timing chains are broken lmao.. and I can see a bunch of parts in the oil pan...good reason to finally change the oil pan gasket.
Thanks much for your time straight to the point.
This is an excellent tip that really works.
Thank you Jeffrey, do I understand you correctly that the timing chains broke. If so this is a interference engine which means when the timing chains break it is possible that the valves hit the pistons and good chance that valves are bent.
@@martinbuilt Yup the left and primary chains broke.
I built a manifold for my compression tester did a leak down test on all 8 cylinders.
Amazingly the test results are good.
All cylinders held approximately 64 psi.
My nephew and a friend who are both mechanics said 50 psi would be sufficient for the leak down test.
These guys don't know each other.
My Nephew owns a high performance shop in Columbus, Ohio. Kontras Performance they publish lots of content on Facebook.
Shameless plug for my sister's oldest kid.
My friend has been wrenching over 50 years.
I'm stoked happy as a pig in 💩lol...the test results are in.
Had my 11 year old out there with me teaching him as I'm learning and relearning stuff.
I want to say again thanks for your videos Martin.
You stay on point and keep it simple.
Lots of creators can learn lots from you on how to make videos.
Looking forward to putting the WJ back on the road.
@@romeoortegaiii2299 Hi Jeffery, thank you, glad to hear that there are no bent valves. Now you just have to remove and replace timing chain set and oil pan gasket, you may what to install a new oil pump since you will have the pan and timing cover off. Hope everything works out, and stay safe.
@@martinbuiltHi Martin,
Parts on the way plus a new oil pump, and will be doing some other preventive maintenance.
My 11 year old son and I raised the Jeep Sunday.
We laid a nice pad made of 1x8 oak with 6x6 blocks atop of those with steel plates ontop Harbor Freight Jack stands are on top supporting the Jeep as I'm typing.
Today HARBOR FREIGHT sent me an email informing me that those jack stands have been recalled.
Sunday after lifting and securing the vehicle,I was under it applying some PB BLASTER penetrating fluid to the tailpipe exhaust manifold bolts making mental notes...and just not feeling really good about the jack stands.
I have an ARB Front bumper after securing the Jeep on the Jack stands I gave it a good shake n tug all seemed good.
The recall notice on the Jack stands explains that the pawl can possibly become disengaged from the lifting extension if there is a sudden shift in weight.
Reason for mentioning the bumper it serves as good handle to shake the vehicle.
That’s a really nice WJ!!
Thank you 🙂
perfect exactly what i needed to see thank you
glad you found it helpful, thanks for watching
Genius using the wrenches on the removal
Thank you i'm glad you liked it and found it helped.

Great video helped a lot
I'm glad you like it and found it helpful.
Great video!
Thank you i'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.
WOW! I've been fighting with a stupid jaw puller and getting nowhere. I'm doing it this way. Thanks eh!
Great info!
Glad it was helpful!
Wooow....grearh idea..!!!!!! THANK's bro..!.!.!
Glad you liked it
Freaking genius!!
very smart
Ya know if you take a hone to the inside of the dampener where it slides on to the crank snout and if your very careful you can hone it out just enough that it just slides on and off without the use of pullers
😮 nice.
How do you remove a stuck shaft in chicken foot pulley?
Install balancer and reinstall crank pulley.
Place chicken into crank pulley into three bolts holes just hold pulley in place for leverage only Not remove crank pulley again.
Take 13mm loosen shaft remove from chicken foot pulley?
Is this ideal correct way or do I need put into a vise or sonething?
Great for 4.7 later Dakota.
Do you put lock tite on the bolt
Thanks again Martin! Question: Do you think the aftermarket harmonic balancer for the 4.7 is worth it? They make some really nice $$ ones.
The ATI super damper is a great insurance policy for the 4.7 especially if you got a engine that you've done a lot of mods too it will help protect your investment. And there are horsepower gains with it as well.
Thank you for watching.
Great video
Too bad I would love to see how to remove and install the O-ring before the crankshaft.
With time he often flees
uffff soo coollll!!!
I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
Hey needs some advice my uncle was helping me reassemble my jeep commander 4.7 when I had to step away he torque my cylinder head bolt to much and it broke off in the engine block. Can I remove it or I have to replace the engine block
get a bolt extractor set
I'm replacing the crank seal. Do you need the installer tool to put the pulley back on? I already have the pulled tool from autozone.
You should also check out these videos before using the Autozone tool czcams.com/video/dBAMi9Yn2_M/video.html

hi, have you have seen crankshaft moving back and forth because of worn thrust washer on the 4.7 powertech?
I have not. did you google this and see if antone eloes has. Maybe on a forum.
tried but had no luck. thanks anyway
keep up with these great vids.
Bruh 😎 that smart Af thought about that idea 💡 of Operation .. but couldn’t figure it out ...so I guess its possible.. I have a 08 Charger .. They gave me wrong 😑 tool
Great
I'm glad you liked it thank you for watching.
How can you over tighten it to where its rubbing on water pymp bolts? I torqued it to 130
Yeah, I don't understand that either. What did you use for an installation tool?
pulling off my balancer in my 04 wj overland and I cant put the wrenches through my balancer like you I don't have those open slots on mine
You have the HO engine, you'll need to use this harmonic puller czcams.com/video/dBAMi9Yn2_M/video.html
@@martinbuilt Martin, is this an easy way to tell the difference between HO and nonHO?
I would like to know why can't I just use the bolt and its washer, to pull the harmonic balancer back into place?
the bolt it is barely long enough to catch any threads and you could damage the thread on the crank or bolt.
Nice job Martin. Why the new balancer?
Performance upgrade. It will be a 25% reduction in RPM on the AC alternator, power steering and water pump. There are more advantages to the ATI balancer I will definitely explain when I shoot that video. The ATI balancer was actually designed by airram.com
Need Help! every time I try it the wrenches bend and the puller bolt bends, what am I doing wrong ? I have went through 4 wrench’s already and now I need to get a new puller because the main puller volt is bent. Harmonic balancer is not budging
I'm surprised that's happening, try this puller amzn.to/2K7YNV4
and are you sure that the wrenches are not hanging up on anything like the water pump pulley, that would explain what is happening in your situation?
@ Max Castellon: next time heat it up a little bit then proceed as follow. just a lil frozen that's all.
Can the harmonic Balancer go bad on the 4.7 Jeep? And if so, how do you diagnose it except noise?
Thanks!
Yes they can go bad. I've had the one on my 4.0 the rubber between the outer part of the balancer and the Hub failed and the two have separated. Also seen one go bad on a Ford van the Vibration from the engine was so bad you swear there was something internally wrong with the engine.
@@martinbuilt Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, I was not sure if the 4.7 one works the same way with the rubber, but I guess it is just hard to see if as it is painted black. I am chasing some vibrations on my 4.7, already replaced the mounts, plugs, MAP, injectors, filters, belt tensioner and what not, so I am thinking that may be one more thing I have not looked into. I did have a few people tell me that this is just the V8 at idle (my first V8 so I don't know better), but I am still not buying that :)
Thanks again!
If it is the harmonic balancer there most likely would be some wobble to it I would watch it while idling and see if it has any wobble at all if so I would replace it.
The high output balancer does not have room to slide wrenches or anything else in there making this job a pain. Currently on day 2 of trying to rip it off, rented a giant 3 jaw puller to pry from the inside
I did not realize they made a different one for the HO engine until I saw one at Pick-A-Part one time and realize the same problem that you're having now. If you go to the links Below in the description there may be a jaw puller that works if the jaws were flipped around the other way that would grab the Inside Edge of the harmonic balancer.
@@martinbuilt autozone had one! i just asked for the biggest one they had. you could reverse the jaws with a bolt and nut and once i got that sucker on (definitely recommend two sets of hands) out goes the balancer. and the installer is definitely a must as well, didn't think id need it but its necessary. They no longer make the HO balancer so I threw the Dorman one on, doesn't seem to be running any different. Didn't fix my vibration problem though
i also noticed after i got the first puller that theres also a 3 jaw chrysler balancer removal tool that probably wouldve been perfect for rent!
@@AndrewSilvaVlogs This ATI Super Damper made a big improvement for my 4.7 czcams.com/video/27ix7Bcw_KI/video.html
ABN Harmonic Damper Pulley Puller 6-Piece Set for Harmonic Balancer Removal on Chrysler, GM, Mitsubishi Vehicles amzn.to/2YXkCf0 This puller works for all 3.7 and 4.7 engines
Found it.
must be strong wrenches cause mine bent and broke didnt work for me
I find that surprising. I did use Craftsman wrenches it doesn't take a whole lot of effort for that harmonic balancer to come off. are you sure you weren't getting part of the wrenches stuck behind the water pump pulley or something else this could definitely cause the wrench is to break or bend
@@martinbuilt yeh i had cheap wrenches but once i used my adiustable wrench it popped right off thanks for the video
sorry, the CORRECT number is 57306... Old Age sight strikes again!!
Will this work on a 5.9??
if the harmonic balancer have slots in it like the 4.7 one, yes it would work. The 4.7HO engine does not have the slots and a puller is needed like this one. amzn.to/3yB0PE8
@@martinbuilt It will work!! Thank you sir this was very helpful 😃
George Bush working on cars now 👍
I don't know how many times I've heard that I look like George Bush I also get Harrison Ford.😅
Scared the chit outta me when he appeared
Lmao! 😂
send me that timing cover......junk azz dodge
I broke my harmonic balancer trying this man's trick please do not try anything he does he will cause you to break something
Well David, sounds like you should stick to small engines because it sounds like that all you can handle!
Great way to fuck up a rented tool. Don't do this!
