    EV's need to solve the issue of really hot and really cold temperatures for their batteries. ICE cars can deal with that much better. You are going to hit a limit on sales at some point if you are only selling them to locations with just the right range of temperatures the batteries can handle. Plus faster charging and much better range will also help. My wife bought a new model 3 2024 (Highland) and I have been surprised at how much I like the car.

    Here in Ireland we’re having insane difficulty with the government registering the cars here, that’s probably reflecting on the deliveries because I know at least 40 people waiting on theirs here

    Rivian is a different animal than Fisker and others - they are reducing manufacturing process and scaling up and they are increasing vertical integration. They are where Tesla was 6-7 years ago.

      Tesla was profitable with the Model S, before introducing the Model 3. Rivian is losing money on each and unable to scale production in a meaningful way. By the time they release, they might already be in the same position as the R1S, esp with the downward pressure overseas on margins.

      @@ryansmithc - They are losing less per vehicle because they have increased production and now they have found 30% cost savings on production. Once the GA plant gets completed they will scale delivery and should be profitable at COS. They are in a far better position than Lucid or Fisker.

      @@RagnarinVa WSJ reported those 30% cost savings 9 months ago. Look at their recent ASP and AVCs for gross estimates per vehicle. Those numbers haven't reflected a 30% decrease, because sales are falling and competition from other evs like Tesla, will only increase. If they couldn't manage costs on a low production vehicle, even when they had the Amazon van delivery to create their parts bin and software dev, then what has changed? Poor leadership is to blame. Nothing like Tesla imo. They are just Fisker, with a Amazon cash pile.

      happened 3 times on a 75 mile freeway trip yesterday. Have done the same trip regularly with zero phantom braking so I'm not sure what happened yesterday.

      Subscribing to FSD for a month @ a time for $99 renew or cnx anytime. Phoenix go LA and back, Phoenix to Houston & back. 0 interventions, FSD is awesome. No other car even close.

    Achieving positive gross profit won't make Rivian profitable as this doesn't include operating costs. Still a long way to go to being a viable auto manufacturer.

    Betting Tesla on FSD and robo taxi is a mistake. Most investors and basing their enthusiasm on the statement "if Tesla can make self driving cars work it's a game changer". What they are not thinking about is the possibility that Tesla makes it "work" but still can't make a profit or pay back the investment. There is the question of risk (lawsuits, regulation, etc.) and then there is the question of demand. This bet seems to be predicated on the idea that 1. Millions of people who don't use public transportation now will start using it. 2. Tesla will get "most" of the market with no real competition. Both of those ideas seem implausible to me.

      Well, 1) Robo taxis are not public transportation, instead they are private cars you summon and use much more conveniently than owning your own car, in many cases. 2) There are no other companies actually preparing to compete with Tesla for the robo taxi market, everyone else is planning to offer far fewer taxis in highly limited areas at much higher prices. So no real competition seems a given as achieving what Tesla will is very expensive and difficult and takes many years, and no one else has left their sofa let alone started the race.

      @@frankcoffey So your hypothesis is that, cost being roughly equal, people will mostly prefer to have monthly payments for their car loan and insurance, prefer to have a depreciating asset, prefer to take up space in the garage, prefer to shovel the driveway and scrape ice off the windshields, prefer to wash and provide maintenance for their car, prefer to have surprise mechanical failures and costs, prefer to find parking downtown or at events and pay exorbitant amounts or walk long distances, prefer to get parking and speeding and other tickets, prefer not to play a video game or watch a show on their way, prefer to drive their kids to soccer instead of just popping them in the robo taxi, prefer to move their car regularly for snow plowing, etc?
      I disagree.

      Yes, when you look at EPA estimates 1gal gas = 33.7 kWh. When you do the math you see the EVs are more efficient. Just sayin... use your 🧠

    Hmmm, you keep taking about Tesla's cost advantage over their competitors, but I guess you've forgotten that this is a NORMAL part of business in a new market. Tesla lost money for YEARS until they got their volume up to where they got far enough asking the cost/volume curve that they became profitable. At the time, they were the only (major) EV "game in town" and investors were more willing to accept those losses.
    Fiskar made a gas vehicle that was very attractive, but didn't deliver in other aspects, which seems to be the same problem with their EV.

      That is a benefit imparted to those that is first to market and paves the way for a new technology. That’s present in the medical device industry as well, so I wouldn’t say it was unfair for Tesla. Tesla just showed up first and actually was able to sell this thing to people.

    Regardless of cost, that doesn't make up the FACT that Tesla vehicles are the most unreliable in the entire market. You can't buy quality, but you can make cheaply made products. Tesla makes products more cheaply but still can't even keep up with the least reliable brands in terms of long term reliability and quality control standards. Until Tesla quality control comes even close to the even worst brands such as Range Rover, none of this nonsense means much in terms of the reality that anyone who is smart enough to do their research will see the cost benefit and Tesla is still only considered a niche luxury buy for people who want to keep up with the Jones'.

      @@Cam-ch2mgbarely. They raided the coffers. Rivian barely gets 2 quarters of support. Vw now gets Rivians software to implement on their own new EV suv. In other words, vw will now have use Rivian software to compete against Rivian. This temporary loan is a huge disaster sign
