    Depending on Government assistance in the area, some of these people are facing paying a mortgage to the bank for the rest of their lives, on buildings that no longer exist, on acreage that has washed out to the ocean along a highway that may never be rebuilt.
    The ones that managed to save their vehicles and trailers, getting them to sections of road that didn’t wash away will never be paid by insurance. The vehicles are fine. They aren’t damaged. They just can never be driven again…
    Links to farms. Read their stories.

    It's 70 plus km from Merritt to Spence's Bridge. That road was built in the 50s pre coke!
    Been paid little attention to. Was once vital. Road building in BC is expensive and complex. It was built well when it was put in.

    I was lucky to not get stuck in this - the Sunday night that this happened, was gonna take the coq to get back to kelowna from seattle but took the snoqualmie pass instead.

    This is heartbreaking to see. I spent a week at the end of August working in this area, doing wildfire work. I was on a crew from Alberta. Every day we'd travel down from Cache Creek and check on properties all along highway 8, to Sunshine Valley. Met lots of nice people (and animals).

    May as well allocate a completely new route and road there, that isn't getting fixed any time soon, and isn't worth reusing the route. Lots of roads like that in BC, one of these years they will each have their turn at being wiped out like this.

    • @bradleyfriesen
      @bradleyfriesen  Před 2 lety +10

      Both. We got a big early snowpack and then hit with warm rain. 250mm of rain in 24hrs. The melting snow along with the deluge hit land decimated by fires. The land absorbs 60% less water. The ash actually repells it. It's all gotta go somewhere. We have 3 more storms, back to back to back waiting to nail us after another big dump of snow.

      When was this road last wiped out? You talk about it like it was washed out every week. It's gone because of forest fires and deforestation. Not because of a poor design. It was built in 1953 and has had very little work done to it since.
