  • I demonstrate how you can set the timing on your engine prior to starting by using this quick and simple procedure called "static timing". If all things are right this should get your engine running, and then you can adjust after.

    what about advance it needs to spark before top dead center 16-18 degees

      Done automatically with the VW distributor, and as noted this will get the engine running and you can adjust advance as needed after that.

    Interesting. Is that the timing for the spark from the magneto or timing for the camshaft?

      +Veritas1992 That's for the distributor which sends the spark to the cylinder heads. I don't have a magneto. I'm actually saving weight by using a very light Lipo battery as the electrical source and the distributor, rather than going with just a magneto. Timing comes from the drive shaft via a worm gear.

      I'm still thinking of it as an aircraft engine design not a car engine retrofitted for an airplane. Do they have any reliability issues with not using a magneto?

      Using historical data from cars I'd say they're on par with magnetos, and reliability is good. But since there's only 1 ignition source you lose the redundancy. I have a used distro right now, will replace that with new along with the carburetor.

    that fuel pump regulator is junk I would take that of asap.
