VW aircraft engine conversion, Lone Star Light Sport Javalina twin cylinder, 50 HP, 4 stroke aircraft engine.
One of the most common experimental aircraft engine conversions in the world is the VW Type 1 based, long block , 1600 cc.
It currently powers Aerodrome Airplanes replica aircraft, Aerosport Quail, Benson Gyro, Brock Gyro, BK-1, BK-1.3, Corby Starlet, Cygnet, Double Eagle, Dragonfly, Easy Eagle Bi-Plane, Fisher Avenger, Fisher Youngster, Flagor Scooter, Hummel Bird, Hummel Ultra Cruiser, Jodel D-9, KR-1, KR-2, KR-2S, Legal Eagle, Mini Coupe, Nieuport 11, Onex, Pober Pixey, Q2, SkyRanger, Sonerai 1, Sonerai 2, Sonerai 2S, Sonex, Stewart Headwind, Taylor Monoplane, Teenie Two, Thatcher CX-4, Thatcher CX-5, V-Max, VP-1, VP-2, Waiex, Xenos and many more!
The Javelina is a twin cylinder aircraft engine conversion based on the 1/2 VW. Using American motorcycle heads and cylinders Lone Star light sport aircraft has been able to increase the airflow over the heads and cylinders by over 30%, and the cooling area by over 130%.
We currently have 2 prototype engines.
The first is a cut aluminum case using twin cam style cylinders. 101/82mm bore and stroke. 1320cc 80 cubes.
Weight on this engine is 122 lbs.
The second engine features a full magnesium case 89/82mm bore and stroke. 64 cubes 1050cc.
Total weight is 106 lbs less starter.
We will be monitoring the temps closely. CHT and EGT are expected to be lower than a 7.5 : 1 half VW thanks to 100% more cooling fin surface area on the cylinders!.
This setup will allow for compression in the 9.5 : 1 range in the future. Hoping to achieve 60 hp at 9.5:1.

The engine block in the demonstration appears to be original 1600vw version. Assuming that flange is for the propeller, where the crank pulley and belt for gen/alt. would be. Distributor/fuel flange location. Cylinders 2 and 4 utilized, with 1 and 3 plugged. One serious question would be: What have you done to the bearing nearest the flange? (#4) The crank snout was not designed to withstand that kind of torque. Air Conditioned bugs were known to need O/H twice as often due to torque applied to crank snout from a/c compressor.

And why not go with 4 cyls? Heads & cyls can be modified with deeper cooling fins and scoops. At stock a duel port 1600 is 56 hp. I dunno what the weight is, but alot of it can be either reduced, replaced with lighter metals or eliminated all together.

This gentleman is pushing out some fantastic performance words. Sure would be nice if it actually works out to be true. I rebuilt some 1500 cc VW's that never quite hit 55 hp.Higher compression ratio's produce more power, but also a lot more heat. An air cooled engine has a hard time getting rid of that heat. The principal reason why VW finally went to liquid cooling in their cars. And motorcycle engines are mostly liquid cooled now as well. Also, noting that the work end of the motor is now reversed to where the accessories were once driven, wonder if the snout of that crankshaft can take the prop load. It does look sweet though.

    • @ultralightnews
      @ultralightnews  Před 5 lety +3

The 1/2 VW engines put out about 45 HP using just the standard cylinders and heads. These units use, as described are using modern cylinders and heads from the motorcycle industry.
If you just look at the cylinders and compare them to a standard VW cylinder you can see why they can easily get rid of the heat.

Have flown behind a couple of VW engines but the last one I had on a Cygnet SF 2A had an oil leak that could not be found. The engine ran great but it spewed oil out at only about 4 to 5 ounces per hour but it was enough to cover the belly of the airplane every time I flew it. Not a huge issue but enough to make me concerned. The only way to fix it would have been to take the engine out to find the leak. I've talked to others that had the same issue and just accepted it.

Is it under or near the oil cooler in/out on the case? Thats where I found mine. I thought it was the oil cooler replaced it and seals a few times. Then I happened to see this itty bitty crack on the case that went from the inlet down about 1/4 in. Across and back up, but stopped before cracking off.

Without running it ONCE: "We expect an over 1300+ hour TBO...." This is the number 1 way to kill a design. Once this has a few thousand hours on it, THEN set a TBO. HKS started with a 300 hour TBO and PROVED it could do a 1000 TBO over the span of a few years. Understand me, I DO want this to succeed, it seems like a decent design(on paper...), but please prove it a bit before you say this is the next best thing out there, thanks!

@@tphone720 Most of this is a proven VW engine...but then there's the motorcycle parts that are not nearly as proven. Usually it just takes time for the manufacturer of these engines to see if they will pan out and work properly---this isn't always the case of course. As for converting miles to hours, I don't think I've ever seen a chart anywhere that standardizes this, that's why I tend to go by hours only as this is now an aircraft engine and that's how they are measured. Keep in mind the machine was over a year old but because of the time of which I had the machine being winter and cold the new machine sat covered inmy garage witerized by the dealership for months and months that ironically was one of the first machines with a high tech computer and the dealership and factory did have all the information on how the machine was operated when it did run in SeaDoos defense we spoke to their President in Canada about the problem and he personally authorized a brand new engine to be shipped fromCanada and installed at another Dealership at no cost to me so the Company did do the right thing mainly because I didn’t want a new machine with a rebuilt motor because I paid and ordered a brand new Watercraft and engine , now on a 1972 VW Beetle that I owned , although the original motor was refreshed in the 1980s with new pistons, rings ,and gaskets despite having over 1000K miles on the engine it is still running in another Beetle today on the original block and Crankshaft , in a car if the motor dies you can coast to the side of a road in a Airplane that’s a little more complicated so I would go with the old reliable VW

I don't think he's going to get anywhere near the TBO he is estimating.

And the reason for thinking that is? You already have VW conversions that are getting that kind of TBO. Using more modern proven technology would seem to give an even better result.

The average Harley engine will require several top end overhauls before the average air cooled VW engine will need its first one. If air cooled VW engines needed rings and valve work every 25k they wouldn't have the reputation the VW Bug had.

Why not?I've got VW pd ,engine 265,000 miles equating to near 8000hrs and never touched so 1500 to 1800 hours would be a doddle.

50hp is not very powerful. That may be the reason Rotax stopped making/selling the 503 back in 2011.🙂

I've been hoping to find someone who makes a type IV VW engine (used on '72 and newer VW Bus, 914 Porshes + 912 Porshe) that was made for aircraft. This engine has a much beefier bottom end than the Type I used on VW Bugs. I was in Advertising for 30 yrs and one of my clients made Only Racing Type IV engines that put out 200+HP! The builder installed an additional head bolt on each head to prevent oil leaks due to this whopping HP increase. I had one of these Type IV engines with dual webbers in my VW Bus. I would drive up to Reno, NV from SF going 80mph with ease. It was oil cooled with a 2.5qt deep sump and external radiator (mounted 3ft away from my engine with an electric temp. controled fan. Total 7qt system! I think a water cooled head system would be better and lighter.
