If you can only afford one bike make it a road bike. There are more riding opportunities for Road bikes unless you live in an are with mostly dirt roads.

Where I live there are still unpaved alleys as well as an unfinished rail trail. My road bike is not suited to either of those surfaces. There are also some roads where riding alongside cars can be a bit sketchy unless you can ease over onto the dirt or grass shoulder. Again not suited up road tires.
