Clarification: I am aware that the milled slide was introduced to handle the power of the .357 Sig. I was asking about stamped carbon steel because the German Sig factory continued to make stamped carbon steel P series handguns until a few years ago. I understand that carbon steel is cheaper to produce, but I was wondering why Sig Germany stuck with it while the Exteter facility was making milled slides. My theory was that there was little benefit to switching over, because some of the hotter rounds that would necessitate a milled slide are banned in Germany. The answer that they didn't want to spend the money switching equipment also makes sense.
M11A1 is a version of the 229, and is the best variation for the package of features and benefits.
That’s not why they don’t use stainless steel in Germany on the original 228 …the U.S. decided to use stainless steel when we started making the slides for Sigs when we introduced the P229 in .40 caliber and of course, now we’re making everything in United States, and that added a ton of weight to it, the 228 was much lighter, using the alloy steel slides.
I was issued a M11 on a DoD civilian deployment. Despite having not touched a pistol in years I shot a perfect qualification score with it, a testament to the pistol's quality. The gun rode out my deployment chilling in my tent.
The m11A1 is, in effect, a P229 without the accessory rail.
don't forget the STR, normally not on every P229
@@tomg2304 Fair comment - I thought all the latest P229s had the SRT.
Metal ✅
No striker fire dingus❌
No polymer ❌
Great ShortResetTrigger✅
Hefty weight✅
Full length slide rails✅
Great enthusiast review ✌️
My brother just got the M11A1 and I like it very much. I'm going to get back into getting proficient with my P series guns and just did a service on my 1989 P220 and will do the same with my P228 this week.
Really nice review. I always wanted one of those. They are great looking on appearance. Thanks.
As a Brit, following the Dunblane Massacre, I only got to shoot when I came to the US. As it happens, the first hand gun I fired was a P226 and the last one, in 2009, was a P229. I''ve no use for a rail so for me, the ultimate Sig is an M11 A1. Wonderful handgun! Or possibly a P225 A1. I just wish I was in a position to choose...
Sig can name it what ever they want. And they want to sell guns, so good for them in renaming it for what it is. It's an amazing gun market these days with all kind of civilian customer focus designed guns. Another plus for purchasing a real P228 is that it uses P226 mags (great if you happen to have a P226 or three. If you like, that trigger, you should try a P226 SAO. I have one and love the same trigger pull each time I pull the trigger. Very nice review...keep up the good work!
Got this pistol, only had it 1 1/2 weeks and have put 600 or so rounds through it. I read bad things about extractor shooting WWB for first 100-200 shots so I used 124gr blazer now I can shoot wwb 119gr or 124 or really defensive loads perfectly and like a nail driver at 10-20 yard's. Amazing gun and super super smooth! I went with the threaded barrel which is a extra 200-300$ when buying as I plan on a NFA license soon but none the less this gun kicks ass! worth every penny and shoots smoother than any gun I've had (walther ppq M1 and M2,Beretta 92fs, glock 19,20,23,26,27,30 and a few rugers. I honestly highly prefer metal internals to plastic polymer (Glock aka block) I used to swear by a glock, Shot this an fell in love instantly!
Sig>Glock for sure
Its a 228 with a stronger heavy duty slide. Big deal I have the M11A1 & an early P229 in 40 cal. Both great guns.
When breaking it down since that pistol has a SRT feature you need to use the decocker before the slide comes off. I believes it's in the manual about doing it to prevent damaging it.
Agree with you 100%. Don't like the looks of E2 grips, the ones it shipped with are fine. Also agree about the metal. Like that it's metal. Sig's quality is second to none, I love my M11. It shoots very well, way easier to field strip than a 1911. 15+1 capacity when carried. It's a great gun!!
So about 8 years ago I picked up a West German made P 228 for under $500. Aside from minor holster wear it is in pristine condition. I acquired several factory replacement magazines for a total of 10 mags.I also put Trijicon night sights on it. I see some advantages with the M11 A1 but would be hard pressed to justify spending twice the money to get what is essentially the same gun with a few modifications. Oh, and when comparing side by side with my Glock 19 the Sig shoots a bit better.
Excellent review! I picked up one in tan because of it. 👍
I’m glad they used a 229 slide, barrel, & frame. Your right it’s a complete 229 setup. I called Sig Sauer they told me even the frame is 229, & if you want to convert it to 40 or 357sig you can. The 229 is a multi caliber firearm vs the 228 is not. I love the classic sig no rail frame great for concealed carry. I agree they should of used the standard trigger vs the thin trigger. I like the short reset trigger system. Sig should of never put the 228 grip on the firearm, they should of just put the original p229 grips on it.
So would you say that this M11 A1 in essence is better than 228 being that the slide is more durable,It has the SRT trigger, and Sig night sights?
For the occasional range shooter, home defense and LTC gun owner that cleans the weapon and regularly cares for it, they shouldn't run into problems with the sheet steel slide on the original P228. It's lighter, (2oz) and is incredibly well made. (The W German factory knew what they were doing) Look at one, they are solid. Even former police or military refurbished units that are old just show a beautiful holster rubbed patina. I've never been aware of a P228 slide that failed. The milled Stainless slide was done because CNC milling has come a long way, and to make it compatible with other calibers. If you can't tell, I am a fan of the original W. Gernan P228. Not a good gun, an incredible gun. Find one if you can.
I call it P228/229 I think my barrel has 229 on it & the 229 mags fit the grips said 228
The P229 and its variants: Elite, Legion, M11-A1, nitrite, etc… will accept P226 and 228 mags and feed reliably. The P229 mags are slightly wider and will not fit the P228. Now, you know ;)
right on man.
One issue with the 228 is they have a breach block that is pinned in and that pin needs replaced every 3000 rounds or so. The only advantage the p228 has is nostalgia, the p229 is superior in every way to the p228.
Where did you hear that lol. 20,000 you should replace some springs.
Like literally anything else made by humans
@CyborgRising to my knowledge that is the factory recommended interval and of course mileage will vary.
Good video- very informative. Thx.
I used to own an original W.German P228 that I regrettably sold back in the late 90's. I agree. This updated model is better IMO. Updated slide, night sights, SRT, three 15 round magazine, phosphate internals to mention a few. The early releases had some teething issues (extract) but those issues seems to have been remedied by Sig. This is one Sig I'll ALWAYS keep.
Be careful, if you tell a Sig fan that this gun is better than the P228 he might get very upset.
Totally agree - great video.
But of course the Trigger Pull depends on which model you chose. The Double Action Only Triggers on their Plastic Frame Handguns are terrible - such as on the P250.
I love my 228...made in west germany. I shoot this gun better than anything. I still wouldn't mind picking up this m11 a1.
I literally can't find the 228 anywhere in the u.k :/ but everyone and every where has 229. Its a wind up. Great review though. Favourite gun ever :).
Love the video! Also bought mine in 2014 and love it. Only one fte after about 1000 rounds probably because it needed cleaning. I love the short reset but I'm not a fan of the thin trigger. Let me know if your able to install the original trigger while keeping the short reset.
I am glad you liked it! The thin trigger doesn't benefit me but it also doesn't bug me that much. I will definitely try to remember to let you know how it works out if I install a standard trigger.
Hate the new striker action guns. Not particularly safe IMO. Did like the old HK P7 series, though.
The only thing I hate about the p228 and P229 is the bottom of the clip area where it's not smooth but rugged and seems incomplete as compared to the p226 magazine base design.
@group, just received my m11a1 back from sig! Included a note stating pistol was inspected, replaced the extractor spring and fired w no malfunctions. This makes me nervous because I thought the extractor had a snapped. But I may have been wrong. New to Florida so looking for a range and I'll drop an update later today
I would trust the Sig armorers; your gun is probably good to go. I'm glad to hear that it's safely back in your hands, man!
If your around orlando look up teneroc and saddle creek. Saddle creek is only open wed, fri, and sat but 5 dollars for 3 hours
Good video review. I lived in Sweden for 2 years and if you could get your hands on a firearm plus p ammo was not available but those damn Vikings can throw blades like bullets
Belive me its not true when they say: you can not use 9mm +p, this is not true, Sig produced P220 45 acp with stamped slide and as you know 45 acp its more strong than 9mm +p. Truth is when the sig start produce pistols with stamped slide they saw the fastes way to make pistols in this way till 2007. Just to tell you we use lots of p226 and p228 with +p rounds, and some p220 45 acp with stamped slide, we dont have any issue. Thank for your amazing video, respect for you.
I love mine is have exact same one with no rail can I get a laser light put on. I'm new at shooting and have bad eyes slightly
That was a good video for your first one
You could have gone the whole video without mentioning the Glock... Glock not at the same category or level.
I own Sigs but I'm not a Sig fan-boy. Sig fan-boys get triggered very easily.
Went through 100 rounds of WWB and 100 round of green Remington. Got to about 80 rounds with the WWB before a failure to extract, which caused another type 3 malfunction. Then went thru 20 more WWB and 100 Remington with no hiccups. I'm still worried about the fte but I'm going to avoid WWB and see what happens. I keep hearing how filthy this ammo is! My first handgun, xdm3,8 in 40 s&w has been thruu thousands of rounds with not a single malfunction( maybe 1 or 2 light primer strikes but I blame the ammo.). I don't quite trust my m11a1 yet like the xdm, but I hope future trips to the range prove otherwise
One FTE? That wouldn't be a concern for me. I think I had two during my first 300 rounds, but probably due to limp-wristing during training drills. Keep in mind that many people recommend a break-in period of around 1,000 rounds for Sigs. Also, the American Sigs have the heavier milled slide so your gun might run better with higher grain ammo during the break-in period.
My 228 from early 90's had dot/bar sights and a heavy trigger. It was no where near as refined as my issued German P226 9mm with carbon steel slide. No short trigger, much less an SRT. I added the short trigger to my 226 and 239. My current personal 226 ELITE 9mm has the SRT/SRT. Fits perfect in my hand and have an M11-A1 coming next week. Can't wait to put it through its paces. ?? A 226 magazine will fit in the M11-A1 I have been told. Any feedback? Thanks.
RK Harm24 yes you can use the 226 mags.
jim harbin First thing I tried when I got the M11A1 home. Thanks
This gun uses p229 mags. We can get away with p228, p229 as well as the original duty mags.
the original 228 had internal extractor and the 228/229/M11A1 has external extractor. when you buy a 228 be sure you know what you are buying. the M11A1 is a 229, but they call 228 because it is what various military and LEA use the 229 and or the 228. The 229 was made for the 357 sig round and they started building them in the 40 and the 9mm. the 229 had the sig 228 style frame when they started building and then you could get them with rail which was and different number which was a P229R. now they are just sold with rails.when the M11A1 was made they put the A1 after it because they can sell the pistol the public as M11 so they put the A1 after it to sell to civilians. so the M11A1 is a 229 hybrid. I own a P229R(2010) and a P228(mid 90's production).
I own a 90's 228 LE West German w Nickel slide, Siglite night sights 9mm Para stamped barrel. Shoots +P Ammo As Well as everything else No problems to date. DID I GET LUCKY ? Or was it the
LE/Law Enforcement connection and they scrutinized the pistol before they sent it to the Detective ?
Really great German tool!❤
nice looking gun,thanks video
Update: extractor broke or something happened with the tension springs. Right at about 1010 fired rounds, I was having fte's non stop which would cause a type 3 malfunction. =[ wish me luck, with sig now
Wow, I haven't heard of that happening on one of these before. Best of luck and I hope you get it back soon. Shoot me an update when you get it back.
Weird, the mags I've bought for my M11-A1 were all marked "p228" by Mec-Gar. All fit and function flawlessly. Thinking about getting a 228R as well, just to have a German Sig.
I called SIG customer service and asked about the magazines between the P228, P229 & M11-A1 and he said that the P228 magazines will fit in the P229. "They're a little loose but they work just fine" is what he said.
I bought my M11 a year or so ago because I wanted a compact SIG and I'm not a fan on rails on handguns. FWIW they take P229 mags. The M11 and P226 were side by side in the display cabinet and I could have gotten the P226 for $800 less but I stuck with the M11 (no rails and more compact) and never doubted my choice. Love this gun. Oh, and I usually OC it (I'm in Georgia).
+C .Irby $800 less??? It must have been a used P226! Either way it's hard to go wrong with a Sig.
Good job on your debut Pistol review 👍👍
Its a new troubled world now in 2024 ⚖️🗽☮️🇺🇲
or you could just get hogue grips. i got the g10 gmascus greens (1 checkered, 1 chain link) for both my mk25-d's.
sop used the 226 for years before the m9,
The SIG wasn't too expensive. The military didn't like the fact that the SIG didn't have a slide mounted safety.
Even though the Sig 228 and 229 are more compact - they are still too heavy and still too big for Concealed Carry when compared to small guns available such as the Ruger LCP380 or the Ruger LC9S-Pro.
+44357514 Have you ever held the Sig-P220 Stainless Elite? I currently have a HK Sub-Compact 45. I'm thinking of the Sig for my next side arm.
If I'm not mistaken, the M11A1 comes in at a bit over 29oz. empty (pretty much the same weight as the old Lightweight Commander) The Beretta 92 at just over 33oz. empty. I consider the M11A1 to be as close to the perfect weight for what you're getting. It's not at all "heavy" and having a few extra ounces of weight when compared to most of the polymer options offered by a variety of manufacturers makes it ridiculously easy to shoot. Yea, I own several polymer pistols and CC them as well but there's just something about a metallic frame and slide (and of course, HAMMER FIRED) pistol that just feels demonstrably more authentic in my hands. Just my two cents, FWIW!
p228 and 226 mags work m11 mags will not work in 228 and 226 guns.
P226 you mean Navy Seals and many military branches, DHLS ( Dept of home land) ...
Great gun and thanks for the review, however, it's VERY distracting seeing you jabbing the gun non-stop with your index and middle finger.....had to shut it off....
had an issue with extracting, sent back, new extractor; then had trouble feeding and going fully into battery, sent back, feed ramp polished, 600 rnds seems to be gtg.
+Jamey Walden Glad to hear it's running well now.
At the end of the day the 228 and M11-A1 has a different frame, different slide, uses different mags, slide is made of a different material, manufactured differently and made in a different country and uses different mags....its not the same gun. I own both, along with a 229, 226, and a German 220. End of day the American made M11 is a better/stronger gun but the 228 is classic, slimmer, lighter and has the 'Made in W. Germany"...Hard to know which you want so buy both..
My faves
With Markings saying M11A1 on the Slide, P229 on the Grips and P229 on the Barrel - if you are going to sell this gun in the future they will think you mis-matched this gun and put parts together from several different guns.
The gun comes with 228 grips. Grips saying m11a1 don’t really exist
Sig fans know exactly what this is. Once you know, you know. Anyone who branded it a Frankenpistol would just be revealing their noob status.
So, what holster would I need for this pistol? A 228 or 229?
I haven't tried a P229 holster for this gun because I use a soft holster. However, I did buy a Raven Concealment Phantom P228 holster and it does not work with the M11-A1. It's too tight of a fit. In theory a P229 holster should work for the M11-A1.
P229-1 holster and parts will work fine. Just make sure you avoid anything that fits the railed 229
Dude, You have to spend North of $ 2,000 to get the accuracy and flawless performance of the Sig P 228 out of the 1911, I Own Them Both... PS.. NICE SIG BRO...
Sorry but the M11A1 can use the original P228 Mags its the newer mags cant be used in the old P228.
Also check out the CZ 75 compact.
i bought a M&P 9L only had 100rnds threw it I evenly traded that for my 228
But do you like SigSauer?
It was stamped carbon because that was cheaper than machining not because of ammo.
Thanks for the feedback.
+Group Stamping steel is cheaper and faster than machining and it was used bc it was strong enough to handle the 9mm cartridge. Sig changed to a milled slide bc they needed stronger slides that could withstand the force of the 40 S&W and 357 sig. It is more cost effective to make slides on same machinery than to have 2 separate production lines or continue to import them from Germany.
+John Wayne ..Plus the machinery in Germany was nearing end of life. If did not make sense money wise to replace. CNC milling is much cheaper than the stamping operation. The original 228 will handle 9mm plus P ammo. It was designed to handle 9mm NATO which is much hotter than US made 9mm.
I got big hands not fat hands but long fingers, will this gun fit my hands
If your hand fits a Glock 19 it’ll fit this it’s literally same size
If they changed the gun - they should also be selling it for several Hundreds of dollars Less. Plus they should also be offering this gun in .45acp.
They did, it's called the P227.
MaxFit 68 227 SAS.
Sig has outstanding quality, but if you carry a pistol for sd you owe it to yourself to look hard at glock. One third the weight, better magazines & easier to train & shoot! If I knew I was going to a gunfight & a pistol was all I could have it would be a glock.
I stand corrected, but 7 ounces could make it or break it, especially if you carry for long periods of time. Lighter is always better for carry.
I totally agree. I train with one primary & one backup. I like to keep things simple. I could never overcome the d/a to s/a thing. Maybe it's the way I'm wired.
In Europe is hot ammo not forbidden....european ammo has more power than us ammo.
Hk usp is a better gun hands down
Is HK still using polymer triggers ? Pass
LMAO
Bounce your pistol around more
Like it but please quit saying "OK" and "you know" all of the time.
Can the M11-A1 use P229 Mags ?
To tone and European model s Swiss police or rare ones seen a totone gun broker sell on line for 2500 with org book target yes they up there now days 95 precent to tone nickel rare 1800. Not 600 like old mussul cars out site
That guns not the rare better made slide gun it's got have a breach block be true Germany not stanless there not the good ones the good ones were 88/ 95 after or in ,,95 when USA and us sigs or nothing compared to a real west Germany sig there the cream.of the crop srt is new school older have longer reset but most older sigs have night sites to
