Well done!!!
Great video to introduce the options for casual home users to backup their data.
I'd note though that one needs to be very careful when buying the pre-made external drives from Western Digital (WD). WD uses a drive native PCB board for their Elements and My Passport 2.5" drives that make it more difficult to recover data from if you ever need to do so.
Also, the My Book and My Passport have hardware encryption built-in. If you ever shuck the drive out and plug it into a docking station because the USB to Sata board dies, you won't be able to recover your data.
I'd highly recommend getting bare drives and an external enclosure (or docking station) if that's the route you wish to go.
Probably the most important factor that no one seems to ever remember is: Always test your backups at regular intervals!
I've lost data even though I had 3-2-1 backup strategy because I didn't do a periodic backup verification - my primary data drive failed, when I plugged in my SCSI drive (2nd copy that I keep offline in a cupboard), that drive died too. My 3rd and last copy was on archival grade DVDs, kept in a dry cabinet and away from sunlight degraded and couldn't be read.
Though the data lost wasn't critical enough to warrant sending the drives in to a cleanroom lab (and was over 1.5 years old), the feeling still sucks when you think you've already done a great job with a 3-2-1.
I could have avoided the situation if I had plugged in my SCSI drive every 2 to 3 weeks or at least verify the DVDs were still fully readable every month, I could have spotted the issue ahead of time and prepared the appropriate replacements.
Side note: To shuck the drive from your WD 3.5" enclosure, just pry the C shaped (front and sides) cover from the main unit (top, bottom, and rear). The cover is just snapped on using tabs but can be tricky to pry off - you should use old credit cards or similar to hold the cover open once you unclipped the tabs.
Great video PK.
Mean a lot thanks
good one
Thanks for the video Planet Kryos.. I like the ORICO M.2 NVMe Cloner. 03/04/2024 1744
7:50 I guess it just a micro-usb 3.0 not proprietary connector. Samsung use it on S5 and lots of drives use it when usb-c wasnt an option and makers doesnt like usb type b or b 3.0
Yeah, I misspoke is all.
If I need at least 12 TB and I prefer less expensive to faster, which should I choose?
A NAS might be a good fit for you but I don't know exactly what you have to back up or what your situation is or what your budget is
