      I bought a #’s matching disk blue 69 chevelle ss 396 4spd with 3:31 geared 12bolt from original owners daughter in 1978 that’s I still have to this day.
      The $87k 69 chevelle ss396 on NJ auction was a more rare low prod # L78 396/375hp version.
      Lastly,a 69 Chevelle gas tank is roughly 18-20gals & not the 15gal like was stated here.

    Absolutely the nicest car you’ve ever purchased. A true American classic muscle car. I wouldn’t change a single thing! Put some nice radials on her but please do NOT put some ugly, oversized, “modern” wheels on it. Those original SS Rally wheels are awesome and make that car look classic. Chances are the shift linkage bushings are worn or simply out of adjustment. Very simple fix. Congrats on the excellent purchase! I had an original ‘70 SS 396 in high school and I loved that car!

    I have to say this : in 1969 , I was heavy into Muscle cars ! That Chevelle (in it’s day , & the roof is on the option list ) was likely bought new by a 35 yr. old settled down hot rodder ! Vinyl roofs were old guys cars, no young active gear head would have one ! The colour & stripe comes from the “Wenco” rare option ! That was the day when muscle cars were everywhere , and then us young guys had no idea the cars we drove & raced would cost 60-80K today ! 1969 Hemi Road Runner was &5,200.00 , 340 Dart Swinger @ $2,900.00 ! Etc.

    Radial tires, they are not a joke. Nice video and best of luck with your new Chevelle SS 396. This engine is prone to breaking rocker arms (or they were back in the mid 70's, part material may have improved) and the trailing arm rear suspension will pull apart after repeated hole shots. I switched to Mopars years ago not because there was anything wrong with Chevrolet other than EVERYBODY has one.

    I had to laugh when you mentioned the "tires problem". I purchased a 1977 Trans Am out in Tucson AZ back in 1984, it came with cheap bias-ply power cat tires and when I drove it, it did the same thing was like trying to steer a train off the tracks, I put new BF Goodrich Radial TA's on it, and it drove like a new car. Still have the car, it is like new and the wife drives it every summer, great Chevelle content, gotta love it.

    If that’s the original numbers matching trans you would be better served to get it rebuilt. You could add a Gear Vendors overdrive unit and the car becomes instantly more drivable. It effectively becomes an 8 speed because it adds a gear between each gear. That would be great content as well.

  • @paulmorgan1897
    @paulmorgan1897 Před 2 lety +30

    Nice cars! Being an old fart and having to deal with 4 speeds in my cars. Your problem with 1st and 2nd may be linkage adjustment. But don’t keep driving it an letting it pop out of gear. You will just ware off the teeth and have to replace the gears or transmission. At any rate the SS is a great car. Nothing wrong with old school.

  • @fortitudegarage8956
    @fortitudegarage8956 Před 2 lety +5

    With the transmission getting stuck in 2nd gear, then popping out of 1st, I would take a look at the linkage under the car. It may just need adjustment. By the looks of the car & the information you have shared, it seems like the car was restored, sold at Mecham & then just sat for the most part. So it probably just needs driven and have the kinks worked out of it. Beautiful Car, '69 is By Far my Favorite year of Chevelle!!!

People buy a barn find, restomod it , sell it, then someone else buys it, leaves it sit for years, the engine locks up, they sell it again, then the next buyer does the same thing. Remflex header gaskets. Get them. Never have a blow out again. Linkage needs to be adjusted on that trans. Ac is probably empty. Find the leak and get r-12. It can be found. The condenser was designed for 12 and not 134a.

  • @1gatomon
    @1gatomon Před 2 lety +6

    Sounds like the syncros for first and second are nearly gone in your transmission.. You will have to check for a trans leak or a rear end leak or rear main seal leak. You need to pull it and have it rebuilt. Bias ply tires will do what you have going on.. Switch to some Radials and radial shocks and it will be nice and smooth driving.

  • @olikat8
    @olikat8 Před 2 lety +7

    First thing I'd recommend- do an oil change, see about the AC, header gaskets sound blown, and (especially) put radial tires- those are re-pop bias ply tires. They took some liberties with it as you noted- Edelbrock intake, "Slayer" carb, Mallory ignition, headers, audio system -the factory radio is gutted w/the internals changed out to cosmetically look right, but better sound & options. Older unit, probably from late'90's early '00's with a CD player, and the alternator looks to be a internally regulated 1-wire with a Delco sticker on it. All those stickers & paper tags/sleeves are re-pops, along with the inspection chalk/paint marks being replications.
    Those are not knocks. Get all the issues (none major except the gearbox/shifter ) and that's a good cruiser that is much more livable than most vintage cars.

    • @digitalrailroader
      @digitalrailroader Před 2 lety +1

    My first car was a 69 Chevelle. Same shifter crappy Muncie. You have to hold it in first gear. It's worn out. Paid $875 for it and gas was 43 cents a gallon. If I babied it I could get 12 mpg. I loved that car!

    This would have been a great time to add the combustion chamber cleaner (made by GM, order by the case, its cheaper), and add it to every fill-up on the way home. The carb & engine would have been singing like a female Robin in heat!

    The older Chevy's have a floating gas tank. Its always been that way. I have owned quite a few and they always did that.

      Agreed. Most of the 70's GM cars I've owned had a floaty fuel gauge. You get used to it though.

    Growing up a guy up the block had a hoard of orange and white muscle era cars. In the early 90’s there were 5-10 orange Chevys this color on the block. One similar to this. Makes me wonder where they ended up.

    You need to adjust the shifter from under the car. Watch a you tube video on how to adjust. easy job. It all starts with an alignment hole on the shifter then adjust your linkage. If you watch the column you will notice it moves when you put it in reverse that is call reverse lock out.

    It doesn't have a map sensor so when the elevation changes and you don't manually adjust your carburetor then it changes the performance of the car and gas mileage. A little tech information for you lol!
