"I'm a little fed up and it's time that I show you!" Bristol's battle maestro Mad Cut, the 2001 UK Supremacy champion, smokes the decks at the '98 DMC UK Final at Shepherds Bush Empire, London.
I always thought MadCut was real funky. I was at the 2000 Bristol heats where my mate Ed made the evening final and he was far and away the best that night.
Was it at that club that looked like a boat? I think it was called Mud Dock, wasn't it? I entered the Bristol heat in '98, which Madcut also won. It was my second ever DMC heat, after Manchester, which was my first. First Rate and Mr. Thing from the Pervs also competed, but only Mr. Thing qualified.
Actually that year it wasn't at the Theckla (the old barge). It was at a bar/club. For the life of me I cannot remember the name it, it was so long ago. Yes, I remember being surprised First Rate didn't qualify that year, but I didn't see the 98 Bristol heat or his set. I never felt I saw First Rate translate his quite awesome skills into battle sets that would blow people away like his club sets. He was, as I remember, a really, really nice bloke and a real card.
I remember, in '98, a little film crew of middle-aged guys turned up in the afternoon, at the qualifying. I think they expected all the DJs to be dancing, like they were normal club-goers, because they had the camera pointed at us, with puzzled looks on their faces, wondering why all of us scratch nerds were just standing still, geeking out over the routines!
I've got bad memories of those particular Shure cartridges that Mad Cut is using. I ordered a pair from a little shop, back in '97 (before I'd discovered the now legendary M44-7 cartridges), and when I went in to buy them, the guy mistakenly only gave me one of them. It wasn't until I got to the bus stop to go home that I realised what had happened. When I went back to tell the guy, he was convinced I was trying to trick him into giving my half, or all of my money back. We spent about 20 awkward seconds staring at each other, before he went into the stock room and found the other one.
It'd be good if you could put some of those 99 DMC UK final sets up Michael. It was a really strong year that year and a significant step up in level. :)
Hey Jonathan, most of that final is already available -- on my channel are the sets from Skully, Woody, Tang, Prime Cuts, and Blood 1, and Vegas, Madcut and Tigerstyle's sets are also out there -- I think the only ones missing on CZcams are First Rate, Richie Ruftone and L Jay, all of which I can get up in the next week or two

I don't think they were filmed by DMC, and I didn't film any of them. I never asked if we were allowed, and was probably too drunk in any case!!

I haven't seen this routine in so long, but I remember it off by heart. Possibly one of the greatest battle routines I ever heard.
