    The 7900GRE is artificially limited. The card is allowed to pull only 260W at stock, when the nearly identical 7900XT is 320W TBP and still demanding more. VRAM is also limited to 18Gbps, despite the fact the memory chip itself is rated for 20Gbps. It seems as though the AIBs are also not allowed to alter anything spec wise besides power limit.

      You should also note that 7900xt has 1 more chiplet(?) while having similar total cores as GRE, so there may be diminishing returns of how dence should chiplets be packed and don't forget about temps
      ~23% power difference feels to be a big limiting factor, but looking at temperatures, higher chiplet density could cause overheating which is why AMD limited their reference model to 260watts

      Not just that, but he is the only channel that did it properly to begin with. Comparing an AIB OC 7900 GRE to a reference 7800 XT, like other channels did, and coming up with +15% +20% improvements is misleading and scammy as hell. If anything, it's the other channels that should make clarification videos explaining their garbage, unfair data. Like for like comparisons should be a standard, period.

    I find the GRE to be a very strange product with how they've nerfed the memory to hold back those 80 RDNA 3 compute units. It's like it behaves more like an overclocked 7800XT with 60 CU's than and 80 CU card a lot of the time.

    • @shaun1243
      @shaun1243 Před 2 měsíci +24

      Agreed. It's an odd choice to nerf it like that. The GRE should be on the heels of the 4070 Ti Super. I do wonder how much influence the 18Gbps memory has when you consider the 64MB of infintiy cache, which is identical to the 7800 XT. I think they should've at least included another 20MB or so of cache if they wanted to keep the memory down at 18Gbps. Wouldn't make up for it entirely, but it'd make more sense.

    • @timiko4
      @timiko4 Před 2 měsíci +55

      @@shaun1243 but you can't just `include another 20MB` of cache without retaping and refreshing N31 chip or at least MCD part of it (totally not cost efficient doing if for one card, this stuff usually doesn't change through generation)
      you have 16MiB cache per MCD - so
      7900GRE 4 active MCD (256bit) - 4x 16MiB = 64MiB
      7900XT 5 active MCD (320 bit) - 5x 16MiB = 80MiB
      7900XTX 6 active MCD (384 bit) 6x 16MiB = 96MiB

    • @Krymzonnet
      @Krymzonnet Před 2 měsíci +14

      This way it's much cheaper to manufacture. Fewer MCDs, smaller packaging, less (and likely much cheaper due to Hynix!) vram... And some of these main dies (estimates vary around 40-90%) they'd otherwise need to throw away

      @@timiko4 Thanks for the breakdown. I get it, they are trying to offer a level of performance for a price. Just the enthusiast in me finds it a bit odd. Whats also odd is how they've limited overclocking the memory. They've cornered those 80 CU's with extreme prejudice lol.

  • @JohannesDahl42
    @JohannesDahl42 Před 2 měsíci +122

    I noticed the GRE in your tests being slightly worse than in what some others found, and didn't find it to be a problem -- you were explicit about testing the reference models. This update is thus an excellent addendum to an already good review. It would be interesting to see how much the 7900 XT benefits from an AIB treatment as well, but you obviously can't test everything.

    • @zodwraith5745
      @zodwraith5745 Před 2 měsíci +13

      The problem with those other reviews is they ARE using those OC AIB cards but aren't mentioning that they aren't even close to MSRP. Nitro+ cards usually cost 10% more while not being 10% faster, making them a worse value. I find it disingenuous for those other reviewers to claim $550 when they're using the Nitro+ cards that sapphire sent out.

    I expect that the bulk of differences in review results can be attributed to game selection. GN had better overall results for the GRE, but their game selection for testing is wildly different to HUB. So how do consumers proceed? Average the averages in the reviews! Personally, I put more stock in the game types than the averages - I don't play competitive titles, I play single player RP style games. So I look for performance in that category.
    Good on you Steve for this re-re-review. Your integrity and commitment to fair results is commendable!

      I guess, the game selection, but if you look at the Digital Foundry video, in Plague Tale Requiem 1440p Ultra, the GRE is 9% faster than the 4070 Super while in the HUB video the 4070S is faster. In Cyberpunk in DF's video the GRE is faster than 4070S, while in HUB's video they're basically on par. So it's always crucial to watch many reviews if you're planning to buy a GPU. Even when HUB tested the Nitro+ version, their results are still different than GN or DF, and the conclusion is different too...

    8-15% additional performance costing 10% more than the 7800xt, I see it as a fairly honest thing to be honest, then considering the possibility of being able to "somehow" unlock the limits imposed by AMD, succeeding in this could lead to bring home a nice quality/price gem. I think the bigger picture comes down to this: theere is no 'reference' model for the global launch, it is a parner-only launch, the end-user will only be able to buy AIB cards, so to represent what the end-user will experience, and be able to actually purchase, an AIB model must be used.

  • @AndyViant

    It's not "mistakes made" if two products with the same label are substantially different.
    But certainly this is a product that has potential to be of interest based on the die, even if there are multiple versions with great variation. You could argue that the VRM differences on the 4070 Super are also exactly the same "problem" in that you have some that can clock to near Ti spec, and others that are artificicially restricted with actually worse VRM's than the stock 4070.
    If the AIB overclock versions of the GRE are close to the 7900XT version, then they're almost a totally different product, and that needs addressing.

    I'm glad you guys did an updated review as the overall review seemed to be an outlier compared to other similar review outlets. I saw/read a few reviews prior to HUBs and the overall gist that I got was the card is somewhat perfect for folks who want cheap lower end 1440p 4k gaming with reasonable expectations. The games also matter as some 1440p and 4k resolution settings mean the games will attempt to use all the vram and larger textures. This is where the nvidia line that isn't a 4090 appear to stumble much like the 970 with it's 3.5Gb debacle back in the day.

      After tinkering with mine 7900gre reference model I think for me overclocking it don't make any sense . Undervolted -70mV and -10% power limit does 2250-2450mhz in games + memory at 2316mhz (maximum) in that combination about 21500pkt in 3dmark fire strike at 225w - max overclock on mine does 2500-2600mhz at 280W and only 9% score increase in 3dmark .
      55w for extra 9% performance is not worth for me . Is seems this card is so memory bottlenecked that core overclocking barely does anything . If they unlock more memory overclocking maybe then OC will be worthy

Since the Sapphire Nitro versions are usually above MSRP it would be safe to assume they are purchased less by consumers than the Gaming OC’s so I believe it would reach a broader audience is when testing the overclocked potential of these two cards to use MSRP versions of the cards.

If the GRE is 8 10% faster and it s just 10% more expensive, then it s quite fine since the higher up.the stack you go, the more premium you expect to pay against a lesser model. Despite the strong constraints imposed, every increase in frequencies makes those 80 CUs better exploited, even when buying a custom card I recommend overclocking the memories to the maximum possible (stable)... even if it could perform even better if someone comes up with some firmware to unlock the latent power of the card, if this were the case things will get really interesting for the price.

    Where did you get the reference model?

  • @1Grainer1

    certainly giving 4 data points was the way, well everything depends on the price, if someone can get GRE partner model for MSRP, then it's better deal than 7800XT, if it goes to like $600 then 7800XT is the way, well as always price price price
    lack of enthusiasm is well deserved and understandable, especially since it's way too late on global market
    once again, good job Steve!

    The 7900GRE is exactly where it should be: half way between the 7800 adlnd the 7900XT, both in price an performances.
    Thechnically is closer in price to the 7800XT, which is a nice thing.
    It makes sense with the upgrade in performances to the 4070 super

      The 7900XT is AVG 30% faster than the 7800XT and the GRE only 5%. Your math is not the best...

    I wish there was a difference between the reference models and AIB like shown here, to justify the premium over stock.

    Memory bandwidth is killing this card at stock. It’s almost a regular 7900 in terms of core count, but the slow memory gives it less bandwidth than a 7800XT and really drags it down in any game that is bandwidth-hungry. If it can hit the 19.5GB/s of the 7800XT it should pull ahead a decent amount.
