He tortured people, stole people's wifes, killed and terrorized innocent people, etc. He WAS a villain, despite Rick's questionable actions Negan remained being a villain, and that's why his redemption is so compelling. It shows how far a person can get if they can't deal with their loses.

I watched every episode when it came out and have recently rewatched the whole series on Netflix and s7/s8 are much better when you are binging. Having to wait multiple weeks for the group to fight back along with multiple month breaks in between the mid season and between seasons makes those seasons feel like they took FOREVER. The scene with Glenn’s death completely respawned my interest in the show. The only thing I didn’t like about Glenn dying was the faux death he had just recently had. IMO it is the most effective death in the series and it was a fitting death for an important character like Glenn. The only problem I have with Negan is that the tension between his group and Ricks, as well as others, went on far too long. The show didn’t truly die to me until the Whisperers. I hated their group and the leader was annoying. It just got too boring for me and I was done waiting in boredom for half a season just for one episode every once in a while that made it somewhat worth it.

I LOVED Negan since his first appearance in the S6 finale. I always knew it was going to be Glenn that got the bat, but only because I heard about it from people who had read the comics. The S6 finale cliff hanger made me want to read the comics, so in between seasons I bought all the issues & caught up with the comics. By the time S7E1 premiered the comics were already passed the Whisperer War, so I had a good idea of where the show was heading. It's mildly frustrating seeing the show get so much hate from ex-fans because they all chose to be weenies and stop watching the show following the death of Glenn. All Out War is an amazing segment in the storyline, and then follow that up with the Whisperer War + Negan's character arc and the story holds up as strong as rock. I'm not going to act like the show writers didn't mess up in a lot of areas (the biggest f up being killing off Carl) but I will confidently say that The Walking Dead did not deserve as much backlash and loss of viewership that it received following the premiere of Season 7. So many "fans" couldn't wrap there hand around the symbolism of Glenn's death. He was literally the last bit of morality left in Ricks group, and with Negan's introduction, any lick of morality left died as soon as he stepped out of that RV.

Thank you for giving Season 7 some much deserved love. It has its flaws, particularly with the pacing in the second half, but I've never understood when people say it's one of the worst seasons and that it killed the show. Negan, much like his comic counterpart, was a fantastic, charismatic villain and I loved seeing our protagonists completely defeated at the beginning of the season, only to rise up and defeat the Saviors (temporarily) by the end.
Detractors also like to say that this where most fans stopped watching The Walking Dead, which simply isn't true. While admittedly lower than the previous three seasons, Season 7 still pulled in an average of over 11 million viewers per episode, which is higher than the first three. Season 8 is when the viewership truly began to dip and even that season, for all its flaws, isn't the abomination a lot of people make it out to be. It's usually (but not always) the Glenn fanatics who say that Season 7 ruined the show.

Alright I'll say my piece, I'm not a glenn fan he's actually very overhated, here's my opinion tho -
Recently rewatched the show and got on season 7 episode 4 today, I started the rewatch couple weeks ago, every season has flaws no doubts but the first 5 seasons flaws were very small compared to the really good aspects to them, it's why and many others consider the first 5 peak, season 6 is also really good but has multiple questionable moments, the last episode of season 6, Daryl led a chain reaction that got them all caught my negan, and then the episode later daryl got glenn killed, they made daryl one of the most likable characters up to season 6, very annoying for the finale and to season 7, now the action, we all know the charactes went through so much to get to Alexandria and then they faught the herd, rick became leader, deanna died, and they won, and then not even 6 episodes later, instead of celebrating a new world, negan takes over, not even 6 episodes later, or 7, it was exciting to finally see them just hunt for food without enemies for a change, season 6 episode 10, with rick and daryl looking for food, the jesus introduction episode, was sooo good, anyways so skipping to the negan part, the atmosphere of the show change dramatically, wasn't happy, and there was no suspense, negan took all their guns, rick said he doesn't wanna fight and he was okay with the slave lifestyle, everyone besides a couple characters listened to rick, and then negan half the time keeps teasin rick about being thankful, he talks wayy too much, i loved when the govenor was killing people, my issue isn't dark themes, but rather negan coming so soon, and when he was here, he stayed for 32 literall episodes, ya know how boring that is? and when there's no suspense because we know negan has the numbers, and we didn't see negans origins until season 10, he was just a crazy sociopath with good social skills, sadistic and his followers were delusional, he can be evil, and i actually find him funny, but his reign on the ground was boring and was too one sided, rick teaming up with that garbage gang forgot their name, was so corny, I don't even know whos idea it was to create such a community, and the kingdom was also silly, especially the giant tiger, through out season 7-8 we kept seeing too much new communities introduced suddenly, yet our characters never saw those communities before negan took over, i also thought negans relationship with carl was cringe, how can u kill two group members, laugh about it, enslave the father/leader and then try to bond with the son, when in another scene he almost also killed carl, his close call death was so corny, when he started crying and rick cut him, he would be better off if he was cold like the govenor and didn't care about carl..he also didn't kill anyone relevant after Glenn and abe, how can u takeover for two seasons and not kill anyone we care about after the first episode, it just felt like no progression was made through the show, also you're telling me after season 5 and 6, in 7-8 we still in Alexandria? that got stale quickly, Alexandria was cool in 6 but the negan run made it become stale, when the govenor was a villian, he didn't own the prison or their guns, so it felt like thr group can leave anytime, or even make a deal to leave the prison for hershel, while with negan it was one sided, we know as the audience he would be winning, the way the main characters beat negan were kinda plot armor, all these magic communities coming out of nowhere to help?? Didn't mean to write this long it just happens sometimes in twd threads, im criticing negan and season 7-8, and yea that second episode was so out of place, first episode negan killing main characters, all traumatic ( not for me but still), then the next episode it's about morgon and carol in a kingdom, literally so out of place, i literally quit my rewatch even tho i was enjoying it so much, because season 7 was so boring it was hard, like every season after was worse, i genuinely believe season 7 ruined the show, it was so slow paced, weird writing, s8 was the same thing just part 2, season 9 was also bad except the rick "death" episode, season 10 not much better besides the negan episode, then seaso11 was high quality, couple good episodes but alot of the characters were so boring, it's the atmosphere brother, the vibe of the show, the first 6 seaons just felt special, felt exciting, negan came and it was numb, slow, boring, dead, no suspense no surprises, it's crazy because before negan caught them, the vibe was great, scary, we didn't know what would happen, that's when the show is good, we knew everything when negan took over and made it boring , hopefully this comment made some sense

I do not think we can expected Civilization like "Oh, then I declare war on your people and who is soldier who is civilian, no sneak attacks everyone ready?" in this post apocalyptic era, especially since about everyone in a group is ready to pick up a knife or gun and fight.

But just cuz “Negan only killed two of their people” doesn’t include everyone else he killed or the fact that he pressured all those women into sleeping with him and the fact that he just went around to every community taking “half their shit” Negan does make up for what he did in my opinion. Negan(Jeffrey) is the only reason I started watching walking Dead... He is the most badass villain I've ever seen. And TWD fans just couldn't take it how brutal he was and charisma of other characters was overtaken by negan that's why TWD fans stopped watching it. Rick and Carl ruined the show
Negan killing Glenn is a canon event which had to be happened. It's in the comic and an iconic turning point moment. But Carl's death and Rick's dissapearance is the thing. It was all of a sudden and the showrunners didn't expect that for sure. I don't know what is the reason of these things happened but that's the key. It's obvious the scenario was different and it was based on Rick and Carl for sure and the canon comic scenario. Also Daryl and Carol lines are pretty weak, they're kinda contraversal over the series and are not at the level of Negan or Rick developement. I like Norman Reedus a lot but even Daryl+Leah line was pretty weak. Lack of emotions, no warmness, no spark. The story about Lucile is a real tragic love story made a great shot within one episode and Daryl+Leah wasn't even close for me. I remember S10 ending - it was about 4.2 rating for "Diverged" Daryl and Carol episode and it was 9.2 for "Here's Negan" which was for sure one of the best episodes over the seasons.
Saying Negan and Jeffrey sucks is a stupid statement. I can't take it as a point of view since it's totally unmature. The whole idea of Rick's group was overconfidence after taking over Alexandria and their miracle winstreak (which started to be super boring) and they greatly exceeded their real significance acting like a band of unkillable Rambos. And Negan's appearance was the Red Pill and fixed it turning the superhero story to reality with a hit of a bat. "You're not superheroes, you're just a little group within a big world full of bands". Also I'd say Judith (Caley Flaming) saved the day as well because Judith died in a brutal way in the comic and without her it was going to be a disasterous ending for Grimes family within few episodes.
Sesason 10 is great by the way. The Whisperers is a great group with unique mechanics within TWD world and in a lot of other visual and ideological ways. It brings us Lydia who's pretty solid secondary character being hated at the start and beloved in the end. But on the other hand Maggie's return turned from epic start to boring ineffective leadership of her pretty fast. But their relationship with Negan is gold and Lauren Cohan made great. Her look is something. I felt really uncomfortable because that hate look was so real like I did something wrong just being a viewer. The Reapers were great visually at the beginning but faded instantly after removing their masks unfortunately. Leah wasn't bad even though she's a cold hard blonde but Daryl is just a rock IDK - he's emotionless. And again.. The most epic moment with reapers? "Well... Ding-ding"

Who tf says JDM‘s acting was bad? His monologues in the S6 finale and S7x1 were perfect and the entire time he was portrayed as I would expect him to be: A cocky piece of shit, who got used to being the one in power, at first, later a struggling leader, when a not so onesided war broke out and his leadership was questioned (a breaking image of superiority). Especially the moments when Negan’s amused facade breaks, when he is shown resistance and his position is attacked, are acted perfectly. Later, JDM made the character redeemable with his performance while somehow still managing to believably maintain his characteristics from before.
Negan is not my favorite villain (Governor) nor later anti-hero (Shane), but not because he is bad, just not as perfect as these two. The last thing to blame for that is the acting.

Very true, I was specifically focusing on his character from writing perspective but one of the things I don’t like is how they brush over that. Ezekiel briefly mentioned it in S11 but he didn’t really care.

It's definitely a human-rights violation since Sherry had to be his wife to spare Dwight's life, but she was never forced to sleep with him, that part is completely up to the wives if they want to.

Megan was really good in his first few episodes but progressively got worse with every time he reappeared. He went from an intimidating bad guy to a cartoon character with the thickest plot armor in all of friction. It became painfully clear that he'll never die cause the fans love him so much.

Rick wasn't worse than Negan. Sure, his personal kill count might have been higher, and they acted first in the hopes to save themselves and the other communities from Negans tyranny. Don't forget how Negan treated his people, how he punished with extreme measure and sometimes over shit or false reasons too, how he forced woman into marrying him, raped. I love both characters and Negan is pretty much the best the show had to over in later seasons, but in his past he was not a good mean. Not at all.

Thing is what made the season 6 finale so controversial is that everyone wanted to know who Negan killed. It got to the point where there were rumors of leaks. To keep the fans on their toes the creators made scenes for everyone dying by Negan and leaked them that way nobody knew who was actually gonna die there have been people who have found Maggie dying in that scene

Yeah you nailed it! And I completely agree. I think people didn’t like the saviours and the new format and not a dislike for Negan. So it just happened that when he came the show changed and og fans didn’t like the change. However, from season 6-11 every new season was not good enough to live up to the hype of og walking dead. That’s what caused the end of it. Negan was a great character and potentially the best from season 7-11 tho.

I believe the variant hes leaving out while explaining this is that most of the ppl takking about Glenn and negan literally watched the shows over years of time. We got a episode a week so they had a lot of time invested in these characters talking about it in between episodes and the buildup and everything else so while doing this ppl actually get close to the characters a lot more than ppl who just binge watch it you know cause everything is cooming so fast. Its definitely a lot different than having to wait a whole week. So i think if you take all of that into consideration also then it woould make more sense why some ppl stopped watching after glenn. For one they was attached to him annd probably didnt want to watch other beloved characters die. Idk for sure but it definitely adds to the convo.

the problem with TWD was that it would have an ep covering one characters story line, end it with them in danger, then not go back to that character for 3, maybe 4 episodes, so the danger was no longer a cliff hanger it was just...cold. you'd forgotten why you needed to watch this ep "too see if X makes it!"

After Rick and Michonne left, Negan was one of the few reasons why I continued watching. Personally, I thought most of the whisper’s story arc was an uninteresting, and the Commonwealth story arc was dragged out for too long.

Honestly, I think I was probably one of those Bandwagon fans who joined in with the hype, only.... I kept watching it because of Negan. Season 7 was brutal to watch, but I feel that was the point, Rick and the group weren't in charge anymore, at least for that season, and I actually smiled each time Negan came onto the screen, because I liked the character. Season 8 was a bit of a letdown since the tagline was "All-out War" or something like that, and only a few episodes had action. Season 9 was good and hyped up the Whisperers well. Season 10 was a bit slow at times, but I, too, enjoyed Negan's backstory (fun fact: Negan's wife is actually played by Jeffery Dean Morgan's actual wife in real life).
Season 11 again was a bit slow to begin with, but I feel it ended really well, and I'm glad that Negan lasted that long and will live on to be in a new show with Maggie.

S7 is a great season and thanks for mentioning that.
Actually when I first saw negan he was so overpowered.
Tbh s6 finale and s7 ep 1 were the best episodes of walking dead.
When a strong villain is introduced then it's tough for the protagonist to overcome the problem. Which makes the show interesting.
S7 was interesting bcs i wondered how rick will beat negan.
And that was well written too.
    S7 was very good

Negan is fun to watch and I don’t hate him, but it’s strange to me that his defenders always overlook the fact that the saviors provoked Rick’s crew first in season 6 when some saviors provoked Daryl, Abraham and Sasha
When that’s taken into account, it makes sense that Rick would want to strike back considering that the saviors could attack them again at any time without them knowing, sure Negan might not have ordered them to do that but that doesn’t matter since Rick and co had no way of knowing that
So in conclusion, Rick might’ve struck back too excessively but he wanted to take them out right away before they became a massive problem akin to the Governor and the cannibals, so he wanted to have the best possible chances of survival

I wouldn't say Negan "killed" The Walking Dead. Him and the Saviors were the main reason why I started watching the show back in 2016 (don't worry, I watched 1-6 eventually). It was that they ruined the characterization of our heroes and made them do things that they wouldn't have in the past.
Then seasons 9, 10, and 11 came around and made Negan an even better hero, one that everyone wanted to see win in the end.
