In this performance Magda Olivero is 63 year old, her involvement is total, and pay special attention to her last vola, vola, starting at (5:45), she takes the high B piano and build it to a fortissimo with more control than any other sopranos that ever sang this aria at any age. In quest'aria molto drammatica e particolarmente commovente, Margherita, angosciata, giace in una lugubre cella di prigione accusata di aver affogato il suo bimbo illegittimo e di aver avvelenato sua madre. Totalmente confusa, canta la sua disperazione e in un momento di follia vuole volare via come un passero “Vola, vola, vola via”.
In questa prestazione Magda Olivero ha 63 anni, il suo coinvolgimento è totale, e prestate particolare attenzione all'ultima vola, vola, vola, a partire da (5:45), lei prende il si alto piano e lo costruisce ad un fortissimo con più controllo di qualsiasi altro soprano che abbia mai cantato quest'aria a qualsiasi età. An untouchable performance....brava!
In 1954, during the rehearsal of Mefistofele at the Teatro Communale of Florence, the famous director Tatiana Pavlova was a great stage master for Olivero. In order to make the artist understand how she wants the character, Pavlova recites several times the part of Margherita from Goethe's drama, trying to transfer to the singer what she wants from the actress as well. Squatting down on the floor, with her hands around her knees, Olivero begins to sing "L'altra notte in fondo al mare" and is interrupted many times by Pavlova, who is unable to see in that face all the expression and all the concentration that makes her seem immersed in madness, in a dingy room of a prison. Finally, after countless rehearsals, Olivero, keeping her eye fixed on a point in infinity, manages to obtain that expression which takes on a sick mind, absorbed in madness, almost a figure without a body, with a soul that flies, flies and goes, as does the sparrow evoked by Margherita's sick imagination. Automatically the singer finds the right color of voice with which to express perfectly Margherita's state of mind.
After the dress rehearsal, Maestro Serafin, moved by the intense interpretation of the artist, approached her and affectionately took her hand, kissed it and said: "Thank you. You are always number one!". Olivero, who is in Florence after many years of absence, is the object of great ovations due both to her truly perfect vocals and to the impressive psychological identification with which she interprets the character. The outcome of the evening was a triumph for the singer and for Giulio Neri "born to play Mefistofele... (...) Magda Olivero, a great actress, a great singer, a great artist, on the same level as Callas and with perhaps even more expressive, pleasing and musical timbres (the prison scene, of surprising human and poetic truth)".
Nel 1954, durante le prove del Mefistofele al Teatro Comunale di Firenze, la famosa regista Tatiana Pavlova fu una grande maestra di scena per la Olivero. Per far capire all’Artista come vuole il personaggio, la Pavlova recita più volte la parte di Margherita dal dramma di Goethe, cercando di trasferire nella cantante quello che lei vuole anche dall'attrice. Accosciata in terra, con le mani attorno alle ginocchia, la Olivero inizia a cantare «L'altra notte in fondo al mare» e molte volte viene interrotta dalla Pavlova, la quale non riesce a vedere in quel volto tutta l'espressione e tutta la concentrazione che la fa sembrare immersa nella pazzia, in una squallida stanza di un carcere. Finalmente, dopo innumerevoli prove, la Olivero, tenendo l'occhio fisso in un punto dell'infinito, riesce ad ottenere quell'espressione che assume una mente malata, assorta nella pazzia, quasi una figura senza corpo, con l'anima che vola, vola e va, come fa il passero evocato dalla immaginazione malata di Margherita. Automaticamente la cantante trova il giusto colore della voce con la quale esprimere perfettamente lo stato d'animo di Margherita.
Dopo la prova generale il M° Serafin, commosso per l'intensa interpretazione dell'Artista, le si avvicina e prendendole affettuosamente la mano, gliela bacia e le dice: «Grazie. Lei è sempre il numero uno!». La Olivero, che si trova a Firenze dopo parecchi anni d'assenza, è oggetto di grandi ovazioni dovute sia alla vocalità veramente perfetta sia all'impressionante identificazione psicologica con cui interpreta il personaggio. L'esito della serata è un trionfo per la cantante e per Giulio Neri «nato per fare Mefistofele... (...) Magda Olivero, grande attrice, grande cantante, grande artista, sul piano della Callas e con timbri forse ancor più espressivi, graditi e musicali (la scena del carcere, di sorprendente verità umana e poetica».
