    The comparison with Callas is apt . Magda Olivero also worked on her voice until it became a great vehicle of expression. Every nuance is captured here and if this can seem too much in a recording it would have been very exciting live in the context of a theatre.

    Olivero stepped in for an indisposed Tebaldi and had a huge success that night. I like how much Magda modulates her sound and her style is authentic Italian verismo, now a lost tradition. But I miss Tebaldi in this performance.

    Magda Olivero totally outshines most modern singers, she basically eats them for breakfast. But let's be real, she's not quite in the same league as Callas or Tebaldi. Personally, I've never been a fan of her caprino, and her chest voice was weak and undeveloped. When it comes to the role of Adriana, I'd pick Muzio or Tassinari any day - they were just fabulous.

    • @miltonwang21
      @miltonwang21 Před 24 dny

      I would bag to differ of your comparison with Callas, in particular with Tebaldi ,God only gave her a lyric voice and much less flashy dramatic personality or outward attractiveness .
      However,the intensity & the depth of her interpretations almost always clutch’s relentlessly, please note that Callas and Tebaldi both had to quit fairly young , and when Callas came back briefly later on, the voice was without much of support. Tebaldi baldi had little to offer thru out. Of course I am only talking of vocal technique & musicianship here.
      By the way, I love Callas with all my heart still. 3:50

      Look it up. Cilea considered Olivero the best diva ever to sing Adriana Lecouvreur. Your notions of 'sentimentality' are contemporary, uneducated, and ahistorical; they have nothing to do with proper verismo style or with great singing. Great art which was created in the past cannot be comprehended nor appreciated without extensive familiarity with its esthetics, its period, its style, and its cultural matrix.

      @@genlyai5055 I was well aware of such an anecdote. Don't worry. However, such an hearsay/anecdote can only be taken at face value. It was said Refice encouraged Scotto to do Cecilia. So, is that trainwreck of a noise maker any good? I don't want to speak ill of Olivero. She's one of my favorite soprano despite her shortcomings.

    That kind of technic is almost forgotten. There was a line: Giannina Arangi-Lombardi-Leyla Gencer-Magda Olivero-Montserrat Caballé...What happen now? Only Sondra Radvanovsky can be close to that filato (and I think she never recorded Poveri fiori)Netrebko sings Adriana,but far from reaching this filato. What a time of emptyness...
