Sapiens changed my life. Now I am left instead of right and see the world completely differently. Married to a Chinese and living in Germany. Wow this opened my mind. Thank you.
When I listened to this, the word "gracious" kept coming up. Yuval is very gracious in sharing his ideas and also in his manner; but I was particularly struck by the graciousness of the audience! Every person who came to present a question, was applauded (appreciated) by the audience - it even took Yuval a couple of "takes" to get used to this social behavior that apparently is ingrained in their culture. I must also admit that all, and I mean all of the questions, were intelligent and relative. Yuval will go further than he wants in society's interest and appeal. Given his demonstrable sense of compassion, intelligence, personal growth, and humility, these will continue to open many more doors. Yuval had better continue his meditative practice - his blossoming future will require the greatest humility that one can muster - to remain a person, and to not become a "story" himself. To practice my own gratitude, I am grateful for Yuval Harari and what he has to offer - beautiful.

Always grateful to Yuval for helping make our next day clearer. It is great that he gives away to us the secret to his success; which is to understand what's going on inside our own mind and understanding or learning how to control it. That helps create the filter between thoughts and what comes out of our mouth. Eyes closed enables clarity.. no link to religion or any belief, just eyes closed discovering how tough it is to even focus on breathing. To achieve 2 hrs a day is epic and probably needs the 10,000 hr pre-qualification. 10 minutes is a first stage but creates transformation.

@Diana Polyglot Thanks Diana. Yes, I do know it's long - and not a good title. But I wanted to promote the need to address the issue(s) that his talks and books evoke. I find that during the Q&A the concerns of "what to do" really emerge - and he does have an answer, although he remains ambivalent (necessarily so) about the eventual outcome. I am involved in the humanities and arts - in a very conservative community. I deliberately and subtly use my craft to engage their "story" - not to challenge it, but to hopefully introduce a new idea ... a little idea. Little progress results, but it is progress. I guess my desire to hope for the better makes me hungry to have a discussion with the larger community about techniques and solutions to the challenges that Harari presents. Thank you again!

Humanities and the Arts have been leaning toward the extreme over left the last few years and have been filled with identity politics nonsense (all in the name of compassion). Harari sees the bigger picture and doesn't lean left or right. You'll notice that too if you pay more attention.
For example, the first question was, "how do we get people to be more compassionate and let everyone in the country?" his answer was, people have different stories and sometimes they don't go together and that we need global stories. He didn't agree with her that people need to be more compassionate and that people are being xenophobes.
The third question was, how do we fight xenophobia, homophobia and racism. Harari's response was that it's not as bad as you think.
He's too rational to think that promoting compassion fixes everything.

But in the course of listening to almost every one of his posted lectures and conversations (Q&A), including reading his three most recent books, he often calls for compassion, and philosophy. How presumptuous of you to infer that I am "left leaning!" I am not. Ethics and philosophy go hand in hand; and philosophy will direct not only ethics, but its execution - human interaction, such as compassion, the humanities and the arts. I find no evidence of Mr Harari divorcing himself from that fundamental relationship - I actually hear him cautiously and even alarmingly call for it. Apparently, I think you may want to exercise a little more attention - perhaps even several times before responding again. left leaning ... hmmmmmm!

To follow anyone or anything, the story of another, is done at our own peril, is his repeated message. Think things through for ourselves, depending on the importance of concepts that have stood the test of time, and not to trust our momentary interpretations, our emotions, that seem to appear as if by magic into our consciousness without thought. This is what I hear him warning against.
Believing in Magic is NOT thinking.
Believing in determinism of genetics is not thinking... I think it leaves out a certain portion of ownership and responsability, as the effect of ambient stresses ( bio physical and biochemical ) and epigenetics is often downplayed and not acknowledged in the present, let alone the futurist crowd 🙄

I am learning a new language, and what impresses upon me is how it enables me to knit together with a small community of former strangers, from all different types of backgrounds. The thing we all have in common is this challenging task: in this case, learning German together. The first step all Nations who take in immigrants should focus on for integration, is to make sure every single member of an immigrant family join small language-learning groups (and not all together as a family, but in mixed groups with members from all different backgrounds and some native speakers to help out. Learning together, will forge the bonds that draw in news members of a society. Human to human, helping each other get over our egos and giving and accepting help . . . this will break up these immigrant ghettoes and make possible true integration and acceptance of a commonly-held National story - a story based on human minds and affections, not mythical "blood and soil" dogmas.
Nobody is against immigration itself.
The problem is UNCONTROLLED immigration.
Yes we can have nice ideas about integration but when all of a sudden millions show up at your border uninvited that's a different situation. Countries have the right to protect their borders and control who comes in and who isn't.
The problem is in many western EU nations the political elite lost that sense of responsibility and think of borders as some kind of unnecessary burden.
Good on you learning new languages I speak a few as well and it's great. But the immigration issue cannot be solved by learning new languages that's very naive to think in the first place

Prof . Harari's take on AI and radical change of the job market in just 20 or 30 years in the future is a great eye opener. AI poses a serious present danger to hundreds of millions of humans who may become jobless and face impoverishment because they will not be given enough time to learn a new trade. AI is one example of of the relentless march of technology at a speed we did not envision as recently as just 50 years ago. As Harare says all countries will have to work together to prepare all workers and all people to be able to overcome the impact of AI. Both climate change and reining in technology are progressing rapidly and both require urgent control.
I really liked those brilliant and tough questions coming from the audience.

I think one thing that Harari is missing is that, he is not talking about the limitations of human mind, or the knowledge (mostly GARBAGE, and PROBLEMS) that is stored in our mind, how can a limited mind can solve the problems that we are creating. he just pointed out that fear, greed, and selfineterst are much strong forces are in our mind, which can be used, (or we use it, or we are being used by those forces,) by external forces like AI, which will be used by the corrupt elite dictators, who are run by fear, greed, and self interest. And also he mentioned that to enhance or generate compassion is much more difficult, then the question is, how humanity that is ruled and run by greed, fear, and self interest will free itself from these forces, so we can live in harmony with compassion. But the solutions to our problems become greater problems.

Ai is invented and controlled by man, so What problem AI is trying to solve, bring understanding and compassion to humanity, or to make the powerful elite more powerful, by making money and making them less dependent of human labor.

Stories have levels too, the deepest you get into the story the hardest to be willing to accept a change. "Nationalism vs Globalism" we all agree with both in a superficial level, BUT depending on your needs you will believe in one or the other.
this is a wholesome QnA, but I think this part 47:07 is the most important, to reflect on ourselves. and this shows how Yuval is indeed not just one of the sharpest clear-thinkers of our time, but also the most humble one.

For the first question, I think what Yuval does not mention is that what we call a "story" is not really a story to the people with the mindset which we would like to change, it is the "truth" which they base their lives on, the truth reflecting how the world, universe, humans work. Yes, we need a conception of our lives to live, but when we do so, it is the most effective when we do not see it just a conception but the truth which we could rely on. So he is correct in the sense that do not see it as just a "story" to change, but i think he did not point out that the "story" in our eyes is the solid, unchanging "truth" in the people's eyes.

Maybe it's just me and I misinterpret some rhetorics, but it's so strange hearing from the public and in some of the videos from the interviewer: they seem to misunderstand deeply Yuval; it's just as if they think that Yuval is responsible for the possible future he describes.

I also think that free market is not the best place to reach for the best humanitarian solution. I come from a very diverse background. A DNA test tells me I have 12 different recognizable backgrounds. I see that each group has different stories. What I've seen is that I am much less likely to side with one group or another. A very important part of life is being diverse in background. It's easier to accept others.

His answer should have been: off course, as a resident of Israel I think that the wall keeping palastinians out is completely outdated and should be removed. Our extremely numerous neighbours should all come over and build their mosques here. We will finance their numerous children through our wellfare system while we have way less children. Who cares for Hebrew, let it die out. If that's the natural thing to happen, let it slide out of the door. Yuval actually tiptoed aroud a decent answer, just in order to prevent giving this girl an education. And he knows what he is doing. This kind of person is to be avoided. Educating her is an extremely ungrateful job and every sane person tries to dodge this bullet.
Yuval's stance on this subject is actually very balanced and impersonal. It didn't shine through in his answer this time though.
Shouldn't there be other criteria for being able to ask the first question on such an event?
