  • UKRAINE THIS WEEK: WITH DON ARLETH
    Episode 11: May 25, 2024
In this week’s edition, President Zelensky holds on to office as the country enters its third year since the full-scale Russian invasion. Due to martial law, elections will not likely be held until the war is over.
Is the media exhausted from the war? Small attacks on civilians are less frequently reported in the headlines, giving less exposure to the crimes being committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.
Update on the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region. The assault continues but loses steam as Russians face heavy losses in the border areas East and South East of Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv.
Crackdown on Shadow fleet of Russian oil tankers. Russia has been skirting sanctions through its shadow fleet of tankers. Will the West tighten sanctions and deal with this cash cow for the Russian war machine?
    Journalist focus:
Dmitro Kovalchuk, a local producer and volunteer from Kyiv joins us to describe what he saw as civilians fled the border regions near Vovchansk under Russian assault.
Ukraine this Week with Don Arleth attends the Polish Institute of International Affairs’ (PISM) Strategic Ark conference in Warsaw, Poland. Main Guests:
General (Ret) Rajmund Andrzejczak, Former Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces (2018-2023)
George Barros, Institute for the Study of War, Russia Team & Geospatial Intelligence Team Lead
What does Ukraine need to win the war? What does victory look like? Should NATO protect the Ukrainian skies?
Ukraine is not alone growing frustrated and impatient with a clear lack of decision making on behalf of western politicians. “We will support Ukraine as long as it takes” is the typical, political, catch-phrase intended to “send a message to Vladimir Putin”. It sounds bold and assuring but assumes that Russia will quickly grow tired of an atrocious war and throw in the towel. Not only is such an approach completely naïve to the Kremlin’s decision making, it unnecessarily costs a tremendous amount of lives, prolongs human suffering and does little to stop the war. This is a POLITICAL decision and it must change!
“We are supporting Ukraine enough to fight but not to win” says General (Ret) Rajmund Andrzejczak, Former Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces (2018-2023). In this candid discussion, we help you cut through the “noise” to reach a better understanding of where we are in the war and what is needed for Ukraine to succeed. General (Ret) Andrzejczak offers an unparalleled perspective on CEE from Poland, which is seldom heard or conveyed in the English language. If you follow the war in Ukraine, security on NATO’s eastern flank or simply want to know about how the west should deal with Russia, General (Ret) Rajmund Andrzejczak must be on your radar!
Institute for the Study of War and the latest assessment on the Russian offensive in Kharkiv
If you follow the news about Russia’s war in Ukraine, you have definitely heard about the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). ISW is instrumental in delivering comprehensive and current insights on the war in Ukraine. It offers regular updates, interactive maps, and evaluations of Russian movements, offensives
and strategy, among many other valuable points of information. Policy makers rely on ISW to make informed decisions.
ISW also plays a key role in journalism, providing media outlets around the world and correspondents covering the war with reliable, up to date information. Due to martial law in Ukraine, restrictions on dissemination of information, operational security and secrecy; ISW reports are an indispensable tool for a war correspondent.
Russia & Geospatial Intelligence Team Lead for ISW, George Barros, joins us on Ukraine this Week with Don Arleth, to explain what these analysts do and how they do it. From utilizing commercially available satellite images, to purchasing application download data of Russian soldiers, and utilizing all forms of Open Source Intelligence. George Barros provides a unique insight into the workings of the Institute for the Study of War. Mr. Barros also gives his latest assessment on Russian strategy in Kharkiv and Chasiv Yar. The next 4-6 weeks will be crucial.

As an old American combat Veteran (US Army 505th PIR 82nd Airborne Division), I damn well know a courageous, and highly capable Leader when I see one. And, President Zelenski is one of the finest National Leaders I have ever seen! He stood his ground when the Russians surrounded the Ukrainian Capitol of Kiev. President Zelenski was informed that 2 Russian Special Forces detachments had orders to assassinate him on sight...Zelensky bravely Held his ground! He said, "I don't need a ride, I need my rifle!" This is a Leader I would follow to Hell and back! Pres.Zelensky would have fit in perfectly with George Washington, and his Generals.
Pres. Zelensky is an Outstanding Warrior, and deserves All respect!

That was very interesting. You had great guest. I've never heard from any of our allied partner generals before. That was very interesting from an American perspective. To me it looks like America is saying we'll help keep you from losing, but it's up to the EU to make you win. So many people are dieing because politicians won't talk straight.
I truly enjoyed hearing from the guy from ISW. It is hard to believe all of the information that is publicly available. Thanks again and good luck.
Never forget all of the Russians who abused children and their families in Ukraine. From the mass graves (in Izium) to the stolen children. Now if Ukrainian parents don't become Russian citizens and go to flight against their brothers and cousins Russia will take their newborn children at birth.
Speaking of Izium. What did those 414 people see? The Russians thought it was better to murder them and bury them all in a mass grave instead of letting them testify. Whatever they saw must have been truly horrific.
If Russia want's to sign a treaty they must first prove they will stand by one. If Russia wants to negotiate, start with your original written agreement. Pull back all of their troops back behind their original boarder and then you can start negotiations. If they don't show they will honor the original agreement how can you expect them to honor any further agreements.
It's our war to lose. Russia can NOT win. Unless we choose to not support Ukraine of course. It is on us in the global West to pick the world we want to live in. Choose wisely. Thanks.
Glory to Ukraine. God Bless Ukraine and her people. 🇺🇦🇺🇸

The gentleman from the ISW stated "... our primary target audience are the civilian decision-makers and helping them undertake the correct strategic decisions ..." Not doing too well at that are they? No decisions yet made have led to any policy changes that might actually allow Ukraine to win. They simply WILL NOT realize that, if Russia is not completely kicked out of Ukraine, then their next decision will be whether or not to defend the rest of Europe.

    • @AstroGremlinAmerican
      @AstroGremlinAmerican Před 22 dny

Civilian decision makers work for politicians whose only concern is staying in power (and making money). Even worse, politicians are interested in "optics" as in appearances, not reality. If constituents can be convinced that $150 billion out of two years of $850 billion "defense" funding is some kind of sacrifice, or that money already spent on weapons could be magically undone to buy, say, better roads and schools, the politician is free to abandon the Ukrainian resistance.

You can't win against Russia, because the country would start to use nukes, when it feels cornered. The problem is, Russia can't even go back, since Putin did an All-In with his total war economy. It is like the total war of another dictator about a century ago. While the West pursues his strict non-escalation doctrine based on the plot of Jake Sullivan (US) and Jens Plötner (DE), Russia will escalate more and more.

The EU countries of NATO (that means NOT even including the USA) have just agreed on a 100 Billion aid package for the long haul. Just in case the USA decides to stop funding if Trump gets elected. So, Ukraine will stay in the fight no matter what. Russia's economy is slowly crumbling, trying to close one hole with the debris of another hole. Whether it takes many of just a few years, Russia's economy is going to collapse if they keep this up. They cannot even dream to match the monetary power of the EU, let alone if the USA also keeps sending aid packages. Russia is absolutely incapable of matching that. Not even close.
Single nations, as you are suggesting, are not going to have to hold out against Russia. Russia is going to have to hold out against the full economic weight of NATO (including the USA). That is what NATO and the EU are for. If you think Russia is going to match one of the dominant economic forces of the World, then you are serious deluded. Russia is not going to survive that. Sorry :)
