I missed out 4 yrs ago staying busy as a lowboy driver and I don't think I've seen a closer match to the real world daily used equipment, excellent work on your weathering details, you nailed it

Built one of these back when they first came out. The glue gave up over time, now it's in a spare parts box with a AMT Autocar and a bunch of other stuff. Some day I'm gonna do a Mad Max kit bash.

I did one of these when I was about 14 then after I got out of the military , I was a heavy equipment operator in the Seabees, I got one of these and did it in camo and i built a full roll cage on it . I ran a public's work yellow Cat D9 in the Philippines when I was in the Seabees. It had a ripper and it leaked so much radiator liquid that we kept a water truck with us. It had a pony motor and it took all legs and hands to operate, unlike the dozers of today.

Your skill in taking a plastic model and creating a realistic representation of the 1:1 is excellent. Thank you for the time and thought you always put into your review and builds.

I received this kit for Christmas this past year. I have been worried about missing parts due to the box not being sealed. This is a great kit. I'm a day into it now. They have more chrome on it now than in your build. I want no chrome. I can't get it all off. It appears all the trees are here but I'm missing the grill cover. I'm going to reach out to amt and see if I can order one. I can't just fab this up idt. You did a great build on this thing. I have built models of everything since 1980. This is definitely not a first time builders kit! This really is a nice kit! I'm excited to get it done and dirty!

I couldn't locate a Caterpillar paint which would have allowed me to scratch build the cage from Evergreen Plastic and painted it to match the rest of the 'dozer. Thanks for your tips: I intend to build the latest D-8 releas, add the safety cage, and weather it according to your information. Chris, you did an excellent job on this. I've built at least three of these through the years, the first being around 1975. It's a great kit and the only one of its kind. If anyone wants to build this and be a bit more accurate to the D8H, the front piece that covers the radiator should have round holes that can be drilled individually, but the supplied decal/sticker pattern is not true to the D8H so you may want to do some research. There are plenty of detail photos online, so it shouldn't be a problem. Bear in mind that Caterpillar paints each individual component yellow, assembles those components then paints them yellow again. So if you want to do a factory new machine the tracks should be yellow also. You'll have a lot of fun with this build and the finished model is large and impressive. Looks like I'll have to build another one.......

      Thanks for watching!
I'm sure they can't do certain things due to licensing issues with CAT. From what I hear they want a crazy amount of money to use their logos etc.
The only way to re-release this kit and make it affordable to us common folks is to not associate it with CAT specific grill, logos, etc.
And yes, that's why I did yellow paint on the tracks before I weathered them up. You can still see yellow on the sides of the tracks a bit.

Yep, licensing can be an expensive proposition. I remember building an AFV model a few years ago (don't remember which one) that had the brand CONTINENTAL deliberately misspelled to avoid the licensing fees. As for the D8H there is a set of aftermarket water slide decals available that duplicates the design of the old glossy peel 'n stick from AMT in the '70s and includes the Caterpillar logo. I think I'll go with a factory new machine like the one I saw at a CAT dealer in Pennsylvania in the mid '60s. But your weathering job is really good.......

That's one of the cool things about these older kits, the memories and nostalgia that go with them. And, we're older now and can build and paint much nicer. Best of both worlds.

Awesome. AMT and MPC have their big rig kits still out and the lowboy can be found as well. Sounds like you should redo the scene with your more experienced skills. :)

Revell 64 Chevy c10 fleetside built into a 4x4 shop truck put the decals on it truck is molded in white and another idea for the hauler is the mobeuis ford trucks any of them,or the Firestone 78 Ford f150 4x4 truck, and there's several options I've seen lately for building the trailer but hopefully you have a lot of space for all the area the bulldozer and the trailer and the hauling shop truck takes up lol good luck building it and you have a great channel and do nice detailing and intriguing builds sir..

    Great work on weathering!
Doubt I could even come close to that so mine will look like it just came out of the rebuild shop!LOL
Had this kit on it's very first release. My brother-in-laws (kids) found it stored in their garage and played with it until there was nothing left!LOL
Their only shortcoming on the kit was not having at least 3 ripper blades. That would have been more realistic as that is what I have seen in real world applications.
Keep up the good work, love the videos!
