    The Ford L series (also named Ford Louisville or, for the 1990s aerodynamic models, Ford Aeromax) is a range of heavy-duty trucks that were assembled and marketed by Ford between 1970 and 1998. The first dedicated Class 8 truck produced by the company, the L-series range replaced the N-series short conventional (derived from the F series). Produced as both straight trucks and semitractors, the Ford L series encompassed a wide range of models through the Class 7-8 GVWR ratings in medium-duty, severe-service, and vocational applications. The line would become one of the most popular series of trucks Ford ever produced.[1]The L series was produced in the Kentucky Truck Plant near Louisville, Kentucky, which gave rise to the nickname "Louisville Line" trucks[1]; as part of a 1996 redesign, part of the model line officially took on the Louisville nameplate.Following the sale of the Ford heavy-truck line to Freightliner in 1996, the L series was discontinued by Ford at the end of 1998. Freightliner would concurrently take over production of the Ford L series, opening its Sterling Trucks subsidiary; the L series became the Sterling A line, Acterra, and L line, remaining in production until 2009 when Sterling Trucks closed operations.Ford transferred heavy-duty L-Series production to Mack Trucks would became Mack Vision after discontinuation.
    For 1970, the L series was introduced in four size ranges, two hood lengths and grille styles, and with single or tandem (denoted by the "T" in the model designation) rear axles. Powertrains included a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines, based on GVWR.In 1971, Ford introduced a set-back front axle configuration. For the rest of the 1970s, the L series saw few major changes. In 1976, the LL/LTL-9000 was introduced. Designed as a truck for long-haul drivers, the LTL-9000 was a competitor to the GMC General, Kenworth W900, Mack Super-Liner, and Peterbilt 359. Fitted with a set-forward front axle and a longer hood, this version had more room for larger powertrains. In 1978, Ford gave the LL/LTL-9000 its own grille and headlight styling, including one of the first uses of the Ford Blue Oval in North America.Although the L series would see few revisions throughout its production, elements of its design would see use in other Ford vehicles. In 1974, the W-series cabover received a larger grille similar to the chrome version on the L series. For 1978, the F-series/Bronco grille was given a similar egg-crate grille pattern. In the 1980 redesign of the medium-duty F series, the hexagonal shape of the grille was carried over; it is a theme used in all Super Duty trucks since their 1999 introduction.In 1984 (as 1985 model year), the rest of the L series became one of the last North American Fords to adopt the Ford Blue Oval; as with the LTL-9000, it was placed above the grille. In 1988, the L series changed its grille design from an egg-crate design to that of horizontal chrome bars; the Ford Blue Oval became centered. In addition, rectangular headlights became standard in 1991.1992 saw the introduction of the set-back front axle version of the LL/LTL-9000, designated the LLS and LTLS-9000, along with the corresponding Aeromax versions that had more aerodynamic bumpers and optional chassis skirting.
    Almost all models had at least one engine option, the 9000 series had several. The 600-800 series had a Ford 361 V8 standard, 700-900 had a 475 V8 optional. The 900 series had a 401 V8 standard. In 1977 the 361 V8 was replaced by a 370, and the 401 V8 was replaced by a 429; the 475 V8 remained an option.The 7000 and 8000 series had a Caterpillar V175 standard, the 7000 had a V200 and the 8000 had a V225 available. The 9000 series had a Cummins NH230 standard, Cummins N series up to 350 hp (260 kW) and Caterpillar 3406 series up to 375 hp were optional.
    At the end of 1996, Ford completed the sale of its heavy-truck operations, selling the rights and production tools of the Louisville, Aeromax, and Cargo to Freightliner. Ford would end production of the Louisville/Aeromax in 1998; the truck lines would re-enter production as Sterling Trucks from 1997 to 2009; both lines were produced concurrently by Ford and Freightliner during 1998.In 1998 Sterling began production in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, of their L-Line 7500, 8500, 9500, and A-Line 9500. A Mercedes Benz diesel was introduced and a very low profile “CarHauler” model was developed, otherwise there was very little change between 1998 and 2008. Production ended in 2009

    hi hpiguys...i am finally finished this dump truck. it took me almost a month off and on...way longer than you. maybe i'm inept, haha. i really appreciate your very detailed video and explanations and i referred to it often. i modified the dump box with horizontal ribs, not the vertical. for the decals, i found a local print shop that could replicate the real logo and put it on sticky back vinyl, it worked out perfect. thanks again for all your help.

    Perfect build, I'm retired from Louisiana HWY Dept but I put up traffic signals for 30 years and used bucket trucks and derrick digger trucks, but the dump trucks looked just like that but without the plows, Louisiana doesn't get that much snow, but a really awesome build. Oh yeah they figured out that they could get the trucks cheaper in white, so they stopped getting them in orange.

    HI CHRIS .
    I'M NEW TO YOUR SIGHT .
    YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB.
    ON THE BUILDING THE FORD LTN 8OOO SNOW PLOW DUMP TRUCK.
    I OPERATED A 1994 FORD L 9000 TANDOM JUST LIKE THE MODEL WITH A WING ON
    THE PASINGER SIDE. FOR ABOUT 18 YEARS.
    I SAW THIS MODEL A WHILE BACK. I HAD TO HAVE ONE.
    I WAS GLAD TO HEAR YOUR DAD DID THE SAME JOB THAT I DID FOR 40 3/4 YEARS.
    ANYWAY YOUR PROUBLEM WITH TILTING THE HOOD.
    ON MY PLOW, THE GRILL STAYS UP BY THE RADIATOR WHEN
    TILTING THE HOOD AHEAD. ALSO, THERE IS A SMALL SECTION OF HOOD CUT OUT UNDER THE GRILL &
    THE BUMPER STAYS OFF WHILE THE PLOW IS ON.
    I'LL TRY TO BILD MINE THIS WAY. WITH THE WING BEAM ATTACHED TO THE PLOW HARNES
    THERE WAS 4 PINS TO HOLD THE PLOW HARNES VERTICAL.
    PULLING THE 2 TOP PINS ALOUD THE HARNES & WING TO LEAN FORWARD ENOUGHT
    TO TILT THE HOOD FOR REPAIRES THE CO.THAT MOUNTED THE PLOW TO THE TRUCK
    ALSO MADE 2 HATCHES ON EACH SIDE OF THE HOOD TO CHECK THE COOLENT, THE ENGIN OIL
    & POWER STEARING , WHITCH SAVED TILTING THE HOOD PROSESS.
    I PROBLY WON'T MAKE ALL THOES GOODIES BUT I ENJOYED SHARING A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE WITH YOU
    LIKE YOU DO WITH EVERYONE ELSE.
    TAKE CARE.
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
    JEROME.

    That engine is the 3208N Caterpillar engine, Ford kept caterpillar busy as Ford put these in alot of C-series and LN- series medium heavy duty vocational chassis, even alot of the fire trucks had these engines, then they improved it by coming out with the 3208T, I modified mine graphing a turbo and doing away with the Allison automatic transmission and had a spare main and auxiliary transmission from a parts kit and gave it a 5X4 twin stick setup, this is a tedious but awesome kit and you have done an outstanding job on this unit, and did your pop proud.

      I drove a snow plow, I was a truck driver, heavy equipment operator in the Air Force, one snowy winters night I was plowing on the base streets when I heard "thunk" and a manhole cover went flying right by the drivers window, I was doing about 30 MPH, it flew off into the night and into the snow. I had to call the Air Police to come out and direct traffic around a big ole hole in the street until the cover was found and put back on. I never could figure out how it flipped up and over the blade, a year later I was in Asia where it was so hot I would have given two paychecks for an hour of snow.....

    Man that's just awesome, Chris. Perfect weathering, spot on! And those are the EXACT same colors as we have over here in my town. I didn't know you lived in Marathon county, head right through there on 29 to get to my sisters in De Pere, I'll wave as I pass next time I make the trek to see her. ;) Sorry to hear that your dad passed, he sounds like he was a cool guy. My dad ran the parks and rec department of the city that I now live in and in the winter, since you couldn't really do anything with the parks, he was in charge of the plow shop. So I got to go over to the garage and hang out with him, the mechanics and sometimes the drivers. Sat in many a plow just like that when I was little. I think this is one of your best builds.

    I'm in the middle of this build, and I'm finding it more of an uphill battle than Chris. For one, though the parts are #erd, the instructions don't give call outs, but the pieces are well drawn, for the most part. The main stumbling block is the hydraulic assembly, the instructions are unclear, at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure it's gonna look great when it's done, and this example is inspiring to watch, came out great!

    UPDATED
    Thank you, Chris. I lack the income to afford these kits, so I take merry satisfaction in watching your builds. I appreciate your practical voiceover explanation, and your exuberance. You impart to your models, especially this one, subtle nuances that make the verisimilitude veritably crackle! I can smell the Diesel exhaust and hear the throaty growl of the engine! (Is it Cummins? Detroit Diesel?)
    I cannot drive, so I do not know: would one put chains on the tyres?
    I personally would include this model in an interstate highway diorama with a fairly significant snowfall (round 20 cm, 8", in scale). Behind would be a convoy of passenger cars, commercial trucks, and tractor trailer rigs, all moving in cautious procession. At this scale, just a quarter-kilometre (820' 2.54") would be a little under 33 metres, or round 100 feet on a side--far too big for most homes (well, maybe Grayson Manor).
    A table round 3 metres (roughly 10 ft) long and half that wide would be closer to what I have in mind. It would not be anytime soon, though.
    I have lots of ideas, though no means to implement them. So, my enjoyment in this is in planning them.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  Před 4 lety

      Yeah and this is a 'small' one. Takes bigger trucks for the interstates, etc. Dad usually had a quad axle with belly blade, two wing blades and a center blade. For throwing snow way off the road he'd use a truck like this with the funnel blade.

    I guess "fiddley" is a good word for this model.. lol.. The worst part is that the part numbers are not on the instructions.. It's totally by the look of the part.. You may have mentioned it and I missed it.. Some parts are tough with older eyes.. lol.. I'm 55 and just got back into model building after a 45 year break.. This is my 13th since I started again.. Thank you for your videos and keeping the hobby alive.. You sir are part of the reason I started building again.. I had been thinking about it and started watching videos on YT and I liked the way you did yours so, here I am subbed and still watching.. Again.. Thank You.

    Awesome!!!! I live in Rockford Illinois and their plow and city trucks are white. The Plow truck beds are unpainted metal with liquid tanks on each side of the outside of the bed and the plows have wheels instead of metal skids. The plow trucks have strobe lights or strobing LED lights on the cab and back of the dump bed. Rockford Illinois is part of the Stateline Area since it's close to the Illinois / Wisconsin State Line. =^.^=

  • @geraldgerhardstein2170

    VERY nice Chris. I would build a tribute for my father, but I don’t have enough room for a WW2 battleship machine shop in my model room.
    I have always loved the snow, early morning dark snow, I can just imagine your Pop starting her up in the garage, and getting out on the route. They say you can’t go back, but you did a fine job my friend.
    Please continue to build, the stash will never end ! Take care.

    • @MarkMeadows90
      @MarkMeadows90 Před 4 lety +1

      Chris eddy oh you know what I mean. Where I live, we hardly ever get snow. We only use salters (if that is such a word) that will spread salt onto patches of ice on the roads. Back then, they used graders to plow snow off roads.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  Před 4 lety +1

      And these are the little ones.
      They use quad axles with belly blades, center blade and two wing blades to do a lot of the work around here.
      Then they go to graders and massive front end loader mounted snowblowers.

    Just an idea, as far as stripping Chrome, I use Purple Power, this stuff will dechrome and also remove paint and will not damage clear parts or styrene, I have a Homer Home Depot bucket full of this and with wire and a Maxwell house plastic can I made a purforated dip bucket once I get the results I want, I then allow the dip bucket to drain and go to the sink and use green Dawn detergent and a toothbrush and scrub all my parts. I've used alot of different techniques over several decades but I found this to be pretty good and the best part is you can leave parts in the solution for ever and will not attack parts
