The Chevrolet Titan and GMC Astro are heavy-duty (Class 8) cabover trucks that were manufactured by the GMC Truck and Coach Division of General Motors. The largest cabover trucks ever produced by GM, the Titan (and more common Astro) were introduced for 1969, replacing the 1960-1968 GMC "Crackerbox" COEs. The Astro and Titan would become the final trucks of the type assembled and marketed by General Motors, following the 1981 exit of Chevrolet from heavy truck sales and the 1986 creation of the Volvo GM joint venture.
The Chevrolet Titan and GMC Astro were assembled at Pontiac Truck & Coach/Truck & Bus (Pontiac East Assembly) in Pontiac, Michigan, with the final GMC Astro produced in 1987.
In 1959, GMC introduced its Class 8 cabover trucks, replacing the previous "Cannonball" fixed-cab COEs. Distinguished by its boxy appearance, it became nicknamed the "Crackerbox".[1][2] Available in a 48-inch BBC (bumper to back of cab) length, the truck was produced with an all-aluminum fully tilting cab. Alongside a 702 cubic-inch GMC V12 gasoline engine, the truck was available with Detroit Diesel 6V71 and 8V71 diesels.[2] Along with single or tandem axle configurations, the GMC "Crackerbox" was available with a sleeper cab.
In the late 1960s, as American truck manufacturers introduced updated designs for cabover trucks, design work began on an all-new Class 8 cabover. Expanding the product line to the Chevrolet brand, the replacement for the GMC Crackerbox sought to expand interior space, visibility, and driver ergonomics.[2] For the 1969 model year, the GMC F was replaced by the GMC Astro, while the Chevrolet Titan 90 was unveiled for the 1970 model year.
The GMC Astro/Chevrolet Titan are Class 8 cabover-engine (COE) trucks, sold in both single and tandem rear axle configurations. In contrast to the Crackerbox, the cab of the Astro was lengthened nearly six inches into a 54-inch BBC length with two sleeper cab configurations available. In what would be a distinguishing feature of the vehicle, the Astro/Titan was produced with a wraparound dashboard;[1] the speedometer and tachometer were placed directly in the line of sight of the driver while most secondary gauges were placed off to the side, based on their level of use.
In stark contrast to the boxy Crackerbox, the exterior of the Astro/Titan featured rounded body corners and wraparound windshield glass.[1] In 1975, GMC introduced a Dragfoiler roof spoiler as an option.[1] In an option that became standard a year later, in 1979, GMC and Chevrolet offered the SS (Special Series) package.[1] Featuring a (much) larger radiator grille, improvements to exterior and interior trim, the SS package was meant to market the Astro/Titan towards owner-operators.
In a major change from precedent, when introduced in 1969, the Astro/Titan were marketed exclusively with diesel engines. The base engine was the Detroit Diesel 6-71N, with the Detroit Diesel 8V71 and Cummins N-Series diesels as options.[1] In 1972, the Detroit Diesel 12V71 became available as an option; though rarely ordered, the V12 engine would remain through 1978.[1] Although Detroit Diesel had developed a gas-turbine version of the GMC Astro in the early 1970s, fuel-economy concerns would keep it out of production. - Auta a dopravní prostředky

These videos are fantastic, you have inspired me to get back into this hobby after a 45 year break. The amount of products and the tips and tricks to help build these kits with such detail is awesome, we used to thin out black paint to make our own panel line accent, we also used to light a piece of scrap sprue on fire and hold the front top corners of the trailers above it in that nasty, sooty smoke to make the trailer look like the diesel exhaust had stained them. I'm going to build the White-Freightliner Day Cab and the Trailmobile set of doubles done up in the Consolidated Frightways livery. I don't want these to look too clean, I want some long haul dirt on them, squashed bugs on the windshield and the front of the truck, maybe some driving on snowy roads while being chained up grime. Do you have a video that shows some of these kind of tricks.
I built this kit back in the 1970's and this reissue looks like it made a lot of improvements . The "Drip Rails or Stiffeners" that you reffered to are the hand rails that you can safely climb into the cab or go to the back of the cab to hook up the air lines. I drove on of these cab overs from the late 1960's to the mid 1970's and mid 1990's to the early 2000's , the rest of the driving was in a conventional.
Good words of wisdom at the end. Being 61 I've come to realize that I in the past laughed at things people did for their pleasure. But I no longer do that. Instead I get a smile on my face thinking how they enjoy doing it.

When I started driving trucks in 1973, I started with the sister truck to this truck, the Chevrolet Titan. Same truck, just different badging. I hauled suspended (swinging), beef from Omaha, Nebraska to various cities in the northeastern part of the US. Mostly New York City, but once in awhile, to other major cities in the northeast. Brings back memories.

A lot of those old 2 stroke Detroits came with chrome valve covers.

I think it's pretty funny these AMT big rig builds have the wrong things in chrome, like the fifth wheels, brake chambers, and of all things that weren't chrome the grab handles on the old GMC Astros as also were called Jimmy's. I remember my dad drove one at a company back in the late 70s, and it had that crazy huge dog house dashboard that I actually slid down that little slide part, LOL and I'll always remember a power window run my air, because I got my arms got pinched bye it when my dad put it down for a second and it hurt for a tiny bit then we both laughed. You do incredible work with detail, and I really like how you use the Sharpies, it gives me a lot of ideas for some builds I need to finish. This is an awesome build I would love to get that complete kit.

Nice build. You are definitely the rattle can king. I've used spray cans but not as often as you. The drying time is much longer than airbrushing, especially with Rustoleum products. Enjoy these vids...Thanks!

The original tractor/trailer Miller kit had a one piece decal sheet. Nothing like modern precut decals. I messed up one of those kits in 1977.

I've got the AMT White Freightliner Cabover but it's currently on hold for the moment and I actually broke one of the chrome trim rings for the wheels while cutting it from the part tree. I also broke the two mud flaps while assembling and painting/detailing. Other than that, the whole kit is amazing and I never had a problem with the cab assembly as it is in two halves.
Great build. That green blue color you have is doggone close to Detroit blue. I remember years ago I was building a Peterbilt model that I wanted a lot of detail so ended up going to our local Kenworth truck dealership and getting real Cummins beige engine paint.

I just saw the seat you chose. Its a Recaro seat, all mechanical spring dampening seat. I have the same thing in my bus. Theyre pretty comfy for a 60+ year old design.

I have AMT "HideOUT Truck" / 68 Stang/ 72 Custom Sport Ford sitting here waiting For Winter to build. and Nova SS for Brother In-law who hasn't finished his real life project from before i went into NAVY now sense retired. Cool channel. Not sure how I came across it...havent built models in many many moons. (Im dating myself as an old frt)
I'd like to build this one and I'm gonna most likely order it off line. I wanna build it and experiment with trying to stretch the frame and lower it to the ground. When I see some models my mind starts going and I can see what I want it to look like. Their the ones you really want to build and are excited to see your ideas come alive. And maybe if the cab comes out the way you like it's nice to get a trailer to match if so it looks like an old school trucker that owns his truck and trailer.

The electric one? You can grab generic ones at hobby stores, cake stores, jewelry sellers on Ebay, etc.

I love the fact that you use rattle bombs for all of your major paint work and your Future Floor Polish hack is genius!
And I'd like to personally thank you for painting the engine "more commonly called power unit in the trucking industry" the correct color. That little detail is something that often irks me with other builders. The fact that you tend to use the correct engine block color single handedly keeps me coming back to see what you're going to build next.
Alas, Detroit diesel uses Alpine Green and although you didn't actually have Alpine Green, you used something very close. I believe you called it Cobalt Green? At the very least, I now have a go to color that gets me close to Alpine Green.
Anyway, thanks for getting that little detail right. Also, the happy accident about cracking the wheel ring, honestly makes it more accurate. The "Widow Maker" wheels, manufactured by the Dayton Wheel Company and used extensively back then, actually have a split bead ring that snapped onto the rim holding the tire bead in place.
The story I was given for the nick name is because those rings would sometimes pop off before they could be completely snapped into place. They were put on using, basically, a 15 pound sledgehammer and would some times fight the installer. If the ring did pop off, it did so under great tension and was known to sometimes kill the installer hence the nickname...
Anyway, thank you for your paint hacks and well thought out build options. I, as well as others I imagine, thoroughly enjoy your videos.

I try to get something similar to what the instructions recommend, but factory perfect builds are not my goal.
On the International Transtar I painted it red, since IH painted all their engines red at that time, no matter who made the engine for them. And I've gotten dozens of comments telling me I'm 'wrong' because some folks refuse to admit they might not know everything.

I have the original red cabover kit (can't remember the co. on the box - in the attic), but have you found a way to install the grill so it doesn't protrude/extend beyond the cab? It should be pretty much flush with the body. That's the biggest reason I haven't completed it. Want it to look right. And, yeah, I drove a few of these, along with a number of other cabovers. Gotta get going on building these again. I bought my first one around '72 and it was the Watkins W925 and later the Watkins reefer. My favorite build was the International 4070A by Ertl. SUPER kit! And the parts fit way better than the AMT kits.

At 7:12 you where wondering what it was, if it was a drip rail or what. What it is , is a handle railing to climb all over the side of the truck. If your climbing into the cab, or back to the doghouse (sleeper) or onto the back deck to hook up your air lines. And not all the time are y'all climbing from the ground. You might be going from the cab to the back deck, or the sleeper to the ground or whatever. So what they did was just try to make 1 that covers it all no matter where y'all are climbing to or what part of the truck you're coming from. I've always loved them cabovers if they are done right pulling tankers they look so good. Most uncomfortable truck on the road and not alot of drivers will drive them because they say they dont like sitting so close to the front end that you are guaranteed to be the first one to the scene of an accident when their is one let's just hope their isn't. I wish they wouldve continued to being out new better , more upgraded cabovers but they didn't because how everyone felt about them. Not a hot item.
Looking at the finished shots, I see you did very grand. GMC often had wood panels for the switch areas and the gauge clusters. The valve covers you also did very grand as well. Detroit painted their valve covers green as well. If I was going to do a custom truck job, then I would leave the valve covers chrome.

in regard to the insrument panel decals not in the kit, you could print off a decal sheet of generic ones to use on future builds= make a bunch of them on just 1 decal sheet

What do you use to dry your paint quickly
All the paints I use dry overnight.
I use a food dehydrator to quickly dry as I work too.
