Peterbilt Motors Company, founded in 1939, is an American manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty trucks. A subsidiary of Paccar, which also owns fellow heavy-duty truck manufacturer Kenworth. Peterbilt Motors is headquartered in Denton, Texas and operates manufacturing facilities in Denton, Texas and Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec.
From 1939 until the mid-1980s, the company was based in the East Bay area of Northern California. The original plant was in Oakland, which closed in 1960 and moved to nearby Newark. Truck production moved to Denton, Texas at the close of 1986, but division headquarters and engineering remained in California until 1992, when a new administrative complex and engineering department at the Denton plant was completed. The Madison/Nashville plant opened in 1969 in Madison, Tennessee, for the east coast market. Originally it only manufactured the 352/282 cabover, then conventional production began in the 1970s until it was closed in 2009. Production of Class 8 trucks continues at the Denton, Texas plant (www.peterbilt.com).
In the first third of the 20th century, logs for the lumber industry were floated downriver, hauled with steam tractors or horse teams. Tacoma, Washington plywood manufacturer and lumberman T.A. Peterman could not get his felled inventory to his lumber mill quickly or efficiently enough to suit his needs, so he looked at the then-nascent automobile technology for logging trucks that could do the job.
Peterman began by rebuilding surplus military trucks, improving the technology with each successive vehicle, such as replacing crank starters with battery powered ones. In 1938, near the end of the Great Depression, he purchased the assets of Fageol Motors of Oakland, California, which had gone into receivership in 1932 (near the depths of the Depression). With the ability to turn out custom built chassisPeterman initially produced two chain-drive logging trucks, which proved unsuccessful. In 1939, he began selling his trucks to the public.
    T. A. Peterman died in 1944. His wife, Ida, sold the company to seven individuals within the organization, but retained its land. They then expanded it into a major producer of heavy-duty trucks. In 1958, Ida Peterman announced plans to sell the property to develop a shopping center. The shareholders, not wanting to invest in a new manufacturing facility, sold the company in June 1958 to Pacific Car & Foundry Co., then primarily a manufacturer of railroad freight cars, which had acquired the assets of heavy truck competitor Kenworth in 1944. One year later, Pacific Car and Foundry started construction of a modern 176,000-square-foot (16,400 m2) manufacturing facility in Newark, Calif. In August, 1960 Peterbilt moved to the new facility and became a division of the parent firm. Pacific Car and Foundry Co. changed its name officially to Paccar in 1972
359: Introduced in late 1967 this was the first wide-nosed conventional for Peterbilt, even though it did offer a "tropic radiator" wide-front 351 for export at the time(289 single drive). 359 was available in 119" and 127" long hood BBC configurations. The long hood was only available for specific engines such as the Detroit Diesel 12v71. In 1967-1972 it had the small-windowed "Unilite" cab. In 1973, the 1100 series cab with bulkhead-style doors debuted (late 1972) The Distinctive "Dash of Class" was developed in 1976. The "359" was in production until 1987, when it was replaced by its successor the model "379". In late 1986 Peterbilt offered a special "limited edition" "359 Classic", a limited run of 359 trucks with numbered dash plaques, although more than 359 were built. The bulkhead style doors of the 1100 series cab are still used today.

My dad had a 1974 Peterbilt 359 with the long rectangular dash panel. He was searching for the later, rounded, "corvette" style dash panel of the later 359 yrs to put in it but didnt find one to his likings! The ole girl had a 400 Cummins & 13spd Spicer & 377 drivers. He used it a a dump truck & a log truck. She was a special ole girl & fun to drive! It to had the top mounted, air conditioner unit but with the fan & metal protection cage visable in the top center! Thankya for sharing this video, awesome building, techniques, hints, tips, & memories of the old generation 359's! Model fun👍👍👍

I'm watching the video once again after 3 years from the first time. It is so delicious to watch the beauty of this big rig AMT model. I have also an AMT 1/25 Aerodyne Kenworth Cabover, and a relatively new 359 "Pete" conventional semi truck from Revell Germany and believe me, there's no other like AMT when we're dealing with scale model trucks. I mean, in the actual world, there's no other like Peterbilt and Mack, but in scale model trucks is AMT the master of all brands. Thank you Chris for such a stunning work. It will be always a pleasure to watch your videos.

That is a fine looking Peterbilt Wrecker you built there Chris. Built that model back in the early 80s. Stretched out the frame enough to add the sleeper. Painted the body blue and the frame orange. Built cb antennas out of guitar strings, built up the engine to look as real as possible put the yellow emergency lights on the top, a friend of mine took it to a model truck show someone took a picture of it. That truck ended up in one of the model truck magazines. That cause me to keep building till I had to start selling some to make room for new builds. You have sparked a new light in me that makes me want to build again. Some of the trucks I built in the past took me as much as three months to build. It doesn't matter how long it takes to build these models as long as they look real at the end of the day. Now days these don't take so long cause most of the paints dry faster than they did back in the day. May have to start all over again. Thank you for sharing your skills with the rest of us, Sure by now I need a refresher course. Keep up the good work.👍

I built quite a few of those Pete's back in the 70's and to get that hood to open all the way, you either had to drop that bumper down or shave the bottom of the grill and touch it up with silver. Haven't built one since the 70's but I'm starting to get back into it in my old age. I'm starting with the AMT Diamond Rio, and lowboy trailer and Dozer kit. It's what my dad owned and drove when I was a kid. I just wish I could find a 1/25 drop gooseneck lowboy trailer instead of that beaver tail lowbow. I'm thinking of constructing one myself out of parts.

Don't remember exact color name. The decals were huge and only offered in blue. I think it came out good. Took me about 2 months to complete. Took a few breaks and built some other smaller cars during the wrecker build.

The first one of yours I saw you do was the big Chevy convertible. That looked beautiful. But as you were building it I was thinking "okaaayyyyy..." but it came out beautifully. I went as far as google and found the 1.1 Peterbilt engines, everyone i found was dressed in white with other colored parts. I just couldn't get in my mind to build a engine in white but it's true sure enough! Thanks for all you do Chris and i found those clamps at Harbor Freight for 4.99.

Great job. I hope you do more trucks in the future. The color scheme came out great.
Only thing missing is a light bar for the yellow lights that could be attached to the headache bar. You can buy various after market ones.
Since it is an older style wrecker weathering it is probably the way I will go.
    Great job.

Wow, this really turned out amazing! Your use of rattle cans is really changing my mind from an airbrush only approach to one where I’m begin to welcome not having to do anything more than shake the can and press down the button. Huge time saver! Also, I was stuck in a niche when it came to modeling, and the variety you show on your channel is inspiring. Thank you!

Thanks a lot John. Airbrushes are handy and I use them, but I like the speed of cheap spray cans too.

Great job, you're putting out more models than GM these days! Lol:-) like the wrecker a lot. They do take extra time but are well worth it. Thanks!
