Half the time especially early on, it almost seemed like he intentionally let the men fail, I don't know if it was the case, but I always saw Thrawn as an individual who had contingencies in his plans, hoping they'd be used as it would lead to a greater victory
@@SuperSayianWarrior he still won the battle of atollon. He destroyed 2-3 different rebel cells and over a dozen ships that they took so long gathering. Yes some of them escaped so it wasn't a spiritual (satisfactory) victory, but it was a tactical and strategic victory. The Rebels were completely shut down and even someone as brave as Mon Mothma was shut down. That's why Ezra's victory on Lothal was significant, as it removed one of the only people in the Empire who could actually think accordingly with the Rebels (the other being Tarkin and Vader, one who was killed on the death star, and the other who was too preoccupied about founding out about his children).
Can't believe he barely had an hour of screen time, given how his shadow hung over the entire series.

Fun fact about Thrawn is that he is the one Grand Admiral that has a fleet that is loyal to him, their loyalty to him is so strong that other admirals have questioned if their loyalties is with Thrawn or the Empire.

@@arozinos863 no its canon. What i am talking about is his trilogy books. In the last book treason this was stated by several high ranking imperial officers, it gotten to the point where Palpatine called him in but ordered him to capture Ezra bridger before they could have a "long long talk"

Something i’ve always liked about Thrawn is how he still respects the military rank of his enemies by calling Hera “Captain Syndulla” and referring to Commander Sato as commander the same way
When you boil it down to its most basic, what sets Thrawn apart is not just his strategic brilliance, but that he actually respects his opponents.

Hell, if Thrawn could UNDERSTAND how the force works, he'd be unstoppable. As that would remedy one of his few and only weaknesses.
tbf members of their species do have the ability to use the force (I believe at the most when they are young) since they live in the unknown region they use the force to help navigate it. they called them "skywalkers"
also because their species has much more intelligence as they age by typically 2 times (for example his species 5 year olds have the mental capacity of a 10 year old, so in that sense a physically middle aged man would have a mental capacity of a wise old man)
@@TheTrytix Well if you read the Legend comics he did learn to understand the force to a degree. He collected lizard like creatures called Ysalamari (yes they’re called that) which were able to repel force users.
Thrawn’s emotional intelligence is his greatest strength, a vast contrast from Anakin.
to be fair, emotional intelligence is a good thing for a jedi, but a sith with emotional intelligence would be extremly weak.

If only Gideon survived to meet Thrawn. If he was afraid of Luke Skywalker, then he'd be completely terrified of Thrawn.

He is my Favorite Villain in all of Star Wars. His collectiveness, appreciation for history, eye on the bigger picture, wanting to hear his subordinates opinions. He is evil but a very effective leader. He isn’t consumed by ego and THAT is what makes him so dangerous and powerful
i agree. He's comfortable retreating and saving his resources when a battle turns against his favor instead of letting his ego destroy his men. Thrawn plays the long game. To me, it's terrifying that he thinks like an inhuman computer, but appreciates art like DaVinci.

When you read the Thrawn books, you realize that Thrawn isn't remotely evil. In fact, he hates evil and the evil in the Empire; but he's desperate to save his people. The Chiss viewed siding with the Empire as a lesser evil to annihilation from the Yuuzhan Vong/Grysk threat. It's complicated because Thrawn's duty to his people is no different than the Rebels is to theirs. Zahn does a phenomenal job writing him to the point where Thrawn comes across as simply someone on the other side of a War, with his own motivations to protect those he loves. Honestly, he's a much needed complexity for villains in Star Wars because why people join wars are for different reasons. And unlike Pryce, Thrawn doesn't seek his own glory. He only seeks to protect his people, to the point where he gave up everything to join the Empire to give them a chance.

@@soupdogstudios5354 It's really interesting when you get into Thrawn's backstory because you actually can't view him as a straight up villain. You sympathize with him because he's torn between keeping cover and keeping his people safe. He can disassociate from his emotions to use pure logic, which is why Palpatine couldn't sense his loyalties. Thrawn was controversial among the Chiss because he believed that if they were to survive the War in the Unknown Regions (which makes Empire vs Rebels look like a kid's game, it's so brutal) they needed to take pre-emptive strikes when the enemy was down. For this he was exiled, but this was discovered to be a fake out as he had caught the attention of Palpatine. The Chiss needed to ensure that Palpatine wouldn't screw them over and sent Thrawn as a spy to protect their interests. It explains why Thrawn found the Death Star both alarming and an impractical use of resources. And his desperation to save his people connects with his personal losses: Thrawn has seen more people he loves die than most know, including never getting closure after his brother Thrass was killed.
Thrawn was unusual among his people because, while they were isolationists, he felt every non-hostile species deserved a chance at life which the Vong/Grysk threatened. He hated the racism and xenophobia in the Empire. So when he tries to reunite the remnants of the Empire after ROTJ, he actually puts policies in place for soldiers to be promoted on merit and not race. There's a lot more than that, but this should give you an indication of why Thrawn's crew would fight alongside and be willing to die for him.
“Who deserves what is irrelevant. What matters is…WHO…HAS…POWER?” this statement alone explains why Thrawn should never have a change of heart. I soo hope Disney doesn’t destroy his character in the Ahsoka series

Dude, he's such a good villain. At least in the comics, his motivation for supporting the Empire is that the structure of the new republic is to weak to resist extragalactic threats. As long as he's right about that, his only flaw is that he believes that his ends justify his means.

Whoever picked Lars Mikkelsen for Thrawn is an absolute genius 🧠🧠 No one pulls off the more perfect subtle voice for a villain of bad intentions!
He embodies the character so perfectly that I can't imagine anyone else playing Thrawn. The casting was on point. I hope Disney never recasts the role. Lars IS Thrawn.
You should listen to the cannon thrawn audio books narrated by Mark Thompson, it's almost identical to Lars
I hope in the Ashoka show that we hear Thrawn before we see him, his voice is iconic and it’s so slow and cold.

Thrawn is the type of villain that plays the long game yet very calculative, learning his enemies tactics and their history. Knows how to cut his lost when the battle is not going in his favor without letting his own ego consume him further. This is what makes him one of the dangerous villain in SW.

Captain Pellaeon wonders several times during Heir to the Empire how different the Battle of Endor would have been with Thrawn leading the Fleet. Honestly, the Rebels never would have won.

But yes, Thrawn would have been giving more than an "are you stupid" stare (like the one he did to Morgan) when he heard that Tarkin actually allowed the Rebels to have the Death Star plans and didn't try to guard against the vulnerability in the DS' hull.

5:40 i love how terrified Captain Slavin is in this scene. Thrawn was always so calm, collected, and never once did he show visible signs of aggression or fear. Slavin was probably one of the first imperial officers to see just how angry and terrifying thrawn can be when he ISNT ALREADY TERRIFYINGLY CALM AND COLLECTED.
I love thrawn... he's such a cool villain, and he's excellent at his job. The only thing keeping him from winning against the rebels was the incompetence of his fellow imperial officers.

It's interesting how Kallus points out civilian casualties - he had some sense of honor that developed into desertion.
In the first new canon Thrawn book, it's revealled thst Pryce was the one responsible for the civilian casualties. Thrawn didn't like that but sadly there was nothing he could do about it. It's one reason why he only tolerates her, but doesn't like her.
Thrawn straight messes with your head. This is why he's one of the most dangerous admirals in the empires ranks
Its awesome that thrawn put on a chestplate and a helmet when commanding the ground, its such attention to detail because thrawn wouldnt be vain enough to scoff at basic protection just because it was less comfortable or stylish.
Grand Admiral Thrawn is a true piece of work. His weapon is his mind and how he deals with all of the situations around him. He sees the bigger picture indeed. The whole Galactic picture.

Char was kinda held back by his selfishness, misguided quest for revenge and his obsession with amuro .

One of the most different villains i’ve seen in a show. The main reason I loved rebels as much as i did.
Same. I loved Rebels so much. Thrawn is one of my favorite characters
Now im not saying that Rebels is a bad show, i quite enjoy it. But lets take a moment to imagine what could have been if Rebels, was created with the same animation style as The Clone Wars, with the same budget, and without the restrictions Disney put on them.
The central story would still be the same. It would just look way better than it does. Maybe we'd have a little more brutality like Chopper chopping heads off, but otherwise, pretty much the same

@@RoderickTiernan Rebels would have a few more deaths here and there, and maybe a little more brutality. It wouldn't change the themes, messages and the story the show was trying to tell.

They really should've killed off Sabine's mother and brother, it would've been a good emotional and impactful moment, especially right after they managed to save her dad and it will hammer in the consequences of her actions even more
@@catodes1295 I do agree. Then dying would have had a more impactful effect. But I think, the sudden focus from Sabine's story to the rebellion and ultimately Ezra and Kanan's story would have taken away from the latter. Losing both your mother and brother is a lot. So they would need a few more episodes to wrap up Sabine's story cuz she would definitely want revenge for it. As mature as she was in those episodes, she's still Sabine, a hot headed Mandolorian. So it would definitely make this final season a little messier. They could have done it but it would shake things up a bit.
And ultimately, she did lose both of them, and her father in the Purge of Mandalore. Rn the only family she has left is Ezra and Ahsoka. The others are scattered across the galaxy.

I love the little fact that the only person Thrawn even was afraid of was Anakin skywalker/Darth Vader, noone really scared him more then skywalker and he did not enjoy the fact Ahsoka was Anakins master, love it. He might not have shown fear from the name Anakin skywalker but hes actions shows it and the Comic says more about it.

Thrawn is vastly different than any villain that was in a cartoon series. Disney could’ve made his voice actor make him an over the top villain, but no they chose Lars Mikkelson to portray Thrawn with a calm voice and with such excellent dialogue

Thrawn and Hera are just so perfect. The way he's casually talking and whenever his back is turned you can see her eyes flickering, measuring the situation, weighing options. Meanwhile Thrawn moves with complete confidence, every possibility already weighed, measured and accounted for. Contrasts. I think Thrawn was being perfectly honest when he said he thought it was unfortunate their first meeting might be their last. There's a certain part of him that admires the fight, wants the challenge.
Strategist vs tactician.
When they meet. The strategists has to make a net. The tacticians a lot of traps. Commonly ends with a strategist trapped after a miracle move. Or a tactician tired surrounded

My God man this guy was a damn good detective and investigator I can understand why he was promoted by the emperor so damn fast in the Empire it's a shame with his skills that he pretty much wasn't the straight leader going into the force Awakening era

The audio book Thrawn sounds an awful lot like Mauls voice actor. Which is a fitting difference for Thrawn, love both voices
Thrawn is like Professor Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes rolled into one terrifyingly prescient and slightly uncanny valley-ish alien package. No force powers, no magic, no heroic plot armour, yet he's scarier than almost anyone else save for a few select individuals in the galaxy, only because of his sheer indomitable, ruthless intellect. Even when he's not on screen, it's as if he can almost see our heroes, like they're only ever a couple of wrong moves away from bringing him and his armada of death down on their own heads. When he speaks, it's as if he's vivisecting everyone around him, like he can break something down into its smallest relevant component parts, and reassemble it again in order just by looking. He sees your works, your wants, your needs, your plans, your mind, your heart, and your soul. He might know you better than you know yourself... and he will use this, and every means at his disposal to make you trap and destroy yourself. Utterly devoid of sentimentality, compassion, or anything which could stand in the way of his victory. He is patience and pragmatism and intelligence and willpower incarnate.
He is Thrawn.
You should write a book or something. It's been a while since I've read anything this great 👏 Thrawn is easily my favourite character and you just described him perfectly.

Star wars has many flaws, in the lucas era and the filoni era (kennedy is an exeption we dont bring that up)
Thrawn should have his own movie with his origins and backstory and how he joined the empire and met the emperor
You can read the novel Thrawn (2017). It's about that and it is really good
You'd love the Thrawn: Ascendancy trilogy then and the first new canon Thrawn book (Thrawn, 2017). That gives you his backstory up to his fake exile and climb through the ranks to Grand Admiral.
Grand Admiral Thawn is like a super duper tactical droid.
I can see why others love him for his skill and tactics if the emperor had listened to him instead of tarkin who knows how the empire would last it might be almost Invincible
I think a stormtrooper commander who didn't like Thrawn said something along the lines of if Thrawn's method of leadership spread throughout the Imperial Navy, the Empire would stand forever.
Yes. But Tarkin had something Thrawn Didnt had... Killer edge and murder instict... Wich the sith and dark side thrives on.
My favorite has to be the “narrowed the search” one. There really was no stopping Thrawn from finding them. The Rebels appeared to win even when their location was as closed to comprised as possible but Thrawn came out in top either way. I’m sure he already suspected Kallus at that point.

When thrawn counters by saying his troops are safe and he can now kill everyone without imperial losses, that’s when Ezra realizes he is dealing with an entirely unique opponent. Thrawn doesn’t care about morality if it leads him away from the strategically sound option.
You know if the guy who says secrets are his stock and trade hadn't heard of Thrawns' possible return. Damn that's a well-kept secret.
I guess Morgan didn’t trust the imperial remnant to actually succeed in bringing back thrawn, which makes sense if you think about it.
This is so good. He said he know all secrets in THE galaxy and didn't hear about Thrawn. The problem is Thrawn is not in THIS galaxy. Whales transported him outside (Rebels's ending)
@@TheMiczelo My theory is that Eli Vanto and Admiral Ar'alani (in the Chiss Ascendancy/Unknown Regions) managed to make some kind of long range communciation device to communicate with the Chimaera in exile. It would explain how the Imperial allies knew and were able to gather resources for Thrawn's return. Pellaeon did say that their entire plan hinged on remaining secret and appearing as separated loyalists to the Empire that we're organized. So obviously they were able to keep Thrawn's location/plans under wraps.

I honestly got a really bad feeling that they'll do Grand Admiral Thrawn a hell of a dirty in the Ahsoka show. He's supposed to be a brilliant strategist who was steps ahead of his opponents, highly intelligent, and intimidating, and I feel like they're gonna turn him into a buffoon which I really hope not.
They already did that in Rebels.

And really no one would have expected space whales and even then he had like a dozen star destroyers in orbit to even get to him (Space whales op) and they didn’t even kill him. Btw the battle of attollon because of admiral constatine’s disobedience, the bendu zapping his stuff, and price’s negligence of the fleet while he was on the ground that allowed the other interdictor to be destroyed. Price lost to the rebels at their encampment on lothal while thrawn had no idea of the imperial attack as he was on coruscant, he only got back to lothal after the command center on the dome was captured and had the upper hand until space whales kidnapped him, even though the rebels recaptured the shield they would have been unable to launch the dome as it would still have destroyed the city, the shield only prevented bombardment of the city. The only thing that defeated thrawn directly was space whales that came from sectors away.
The bendu telling thrawn he sees his defeat has to be foreshadowing for the ahsoka show
It was foreshadowing what would happen at the end of Rebels.

Could you imagine a version of the Empire lead by the combined efforts and competence of Thrawn and Vader, without the Emperor should he die or something, along with a few other important but actually competent Imperials? The Rebel's would surely be screwed, for sure.

Vader and him do have an interessting dynamics and thrawn do really take vader confindence.
But vader is a big brute in comparisson. I dont think they will get along as rulers
@@trazyntheinfinite I've not read those books, sadly, though I do agree about Vader being brutish, though you shouldn't forget that he is very intelligent and usually quite calm and level headed in most media he's in, especially when he does strategies, it's just that he gets really disgusted at the incompetence of various officers too often, but compared to Thrawn the Chiss is definitely much more composed and always remains calm the vast majority of the time.
That said, you do make a good point there though.

You really shouldn't act prejudiced when speaking to the only guy in the entire empire who deals with that from everyone everyday.
See, Thrawn is what the empire said it was, unlikely everyone else; he's genuinely trying to do good by the empire, with as minimal of casualties as possible
