You only need to hear Kellogg once to get that voice ingrained in to your head.
Seth Hackley "At least we still have the backup"
Kellogg reminds me a little of Top Dollar from The Crow, how he says stuff like "We've all got our demons friend, but no hard feelings.. you were just in the wrong place during my time!"
he has a good voice though, that's for sure. voice actor did a great job!
Took me 10 seconds to go Oh shiet. And then I know exactly how fucked these people are
Man, storys like these are the reason why I am the general of the Minutemen and why I destroyed the institute. The best hope for the Commonwealth and the settlers are the Minutemen.
I sides with the institute and slaughtered people with my synths
Good to hear that from you general, be cause I've hear of a settlement that needs your help....

An affable 'tech collector', a few hundred caps and a smidge of patience would have gotten the Institute everything. Granted, it wouldn't have been what they'd hoped for, but also no-one would have even suspected their interest. On a list of bad ideas, what they did at University Point would probably be followed by 'Testing a light socket by sticking your tongue in it.'
And they would have gotten some nice weapon technology too. Considering everyone seems to hate the institute's version of energy weapons, they need as much help as they can get.
Exactly! What is... lets say 900 caps, to the Institute? Its no chump change sure, but if it was the data they wanted it would have been worth it.
Even the data it apparently was, it still probably be worth 900 caps. I'd pay 900 caps to be able to make any laser weapons have unlimited ammo.
Game By Game
They probably are one of the few (if any) places that could manufacture a new bottle cap.
Problem is though: if they manufactured a new bottlecap, it would look... well... new! Not like some 200 year old bottle cap thats been rusting away or whatever for 200 years.
- It instantly be labeled as counterfeit.
Game By Game
That kind of weathering is not nearly the same as actual weathering... There are ways to tell fake weathering from real.
Regardless If they seem to use Caps as currency as well, and if they started "printing" caps there would probably be mass inflation. - at least in the institute it's self.
While the Institute doesn't have an internal economy per se, having agents like Kellog and several informants means they'd need caps to pay them. However, we also know they send out scavenger teams and I'd hazard a guess that there's a merchant somehere who gets a lot of his stock from them, who is also likely to be the one to which their informants inform. On a side note, they could even give their agent orders via the Classical music radio, using the playlist as a cypher system. WWII level tradecraft.
It sucks that you don't get the option to take over the settlement.
Gotta leave something for the modders to do.
IH8COMMERCIALRNB yea I know
yea its these moments in FO4 that Bethesda missed out on
Bethesda: eh lets not make this a settleme...
modders: NOPE already done
I remember how I was running around the place looking for the workbench on my first play through, it looked like such a nice place to have a settlement
I wish this was a settlement it so big and epic
Howie Wolowitz there's a mod for it
Mods are a blessing. For the most part.
I wouldnt mind it being a settlement but it's sunken in and looks unstable. Who says the Institute won't come back? I know there are mods out there and I so agree.
Especially since, lore-wise, it WAS a settlement... and everything is set up to make it one. Kind of wish you could make it one, yes.
@@applesevilpie7176 even if it comes back it would just be an added challenge to have the institute raid it once in a while instead of the raiders.
What is really upsetting is how that town turns on the family. Fallout 4 is full of examples of how petty and cowardly people have become.
They're no better than the Institute. They're trash and deserve death.
They were all killed because of one person's inability to keep quiet, or lack of understanding the reality of the danger lurking in the shadows. It's not an unreasonable response to be angry.
Wishing death upon a child who doesn't know any better and whose only crime was being curious? Oh please. Those cowards simply took it out on her since they couldn't touch the Institute's goons.
Didn't say that. However, the adults and those old enough to know the institute isn't a story are partially accountable as they didn't take control of the situation. If when scavenging it turned out that the tech was working and salvageable, why not just sell the machinery and move on. Only gonna attract danger by advertising that you are working on trying to uncover data, as the only ones who would be interested in the garbled account heard, are those who can take it by force (Insititute, BoS). Being angry at someone or some people cos they've brought down a terror that can wipe out a settlement without breaking a sweat and vanish again after isn't unreasonable. In their own nativity and lack of tempering Jaq's curiosity they've risked the lives of every settler there.
@@andyhens3387 she was a child. She had no idea that the institute was even active, or not some ghost story. It was a little foolish, but it’s 100% on the institute.
FAN THEORY: Leslie and Curtis are the great great great grandparents of Jacqueline. :o
Woah. I like that theory.
Forgeta briliant
Forgeta Who are Leslie and Curtis?
The man and woman scientist in the bunker.
Decent theory, but they left the bunker just 2 weeks in to the 'war' so unless they immediately stumbled across a vault they would have quickly become sterile/infertile and then either died or became ghouls - either way, no offspring.
This puts the nail on institute coffin for me.
Its all a point of view thing. Governments do shady things for good reasons. Good and evil is all just point of view.
ModernSurvivalist 57 you would have to have some messed up point of view to think slaughtering a town of innocent people is “for the greater good”.
@@yasurething5417 modern survivalist has a point, during WW2 when the US bombed Japan murdering over 150,000 Civilians. Some people seen it as for the greater good others seen it as Unnecessary
@@lucasbanks8442 difference is the alternative was worse it is speculated that a ground invasion would have killed even more people. Did the institute really have no other alternative than killing the whole town? Could they not have sent a specialist to help uncover the data and compensate the town? So no there was no reason for the slaughter. What they did was an atrocity and they need to answer for it. The institute wasn't university point's greatest hope.
@@lucasbanks8442 big difference between tactical bombing and absolute slaughter of a town. American either bombed and ended the war quick, or fought fiercely loyal japanese people on their own land. The institute just waltzed into this town and demanded tech that people didn't even know they had. And without another question, razed the town to the ground. No the didn't make a hard decision, they slaughtered innocent people because they didn't get what they wanted. Terrible faction, terrible ethics.
Holotape within a holotape
They put a holotape in your holotape so you could holotape while you holotape
Haha
@@oxhorn I think the sole survivor is a synth because the synth assulter said " destruction of fellow synth identified". Just as he started shooting
Paladin Danse OH WOW, but how? The institute wasn’t even a thing in the beginning of the game, and he/she had a spouse that had a kid with him/her.
They could have replaced him while he was in the “cryogenic stasis” and replaced his/her memory’s, tell me if I am wrong.
"Just a gun"? As you were already aware and explained, the UP77 never needs to be reloaded. It is a laser rifle prototype with limitless power. The usefulness of discovering how that's possible would have been paramount to the Institute. Not only for a fusion reactor, but for solving power issues with many different forms of technology.
It doesn't justify the mass slaughter
@@MrPsych77 I never said it did. The Institute's under-handed surface operations while pretending to be virtuous are reprehensible.
It's not limitless, tho. It keeps eating away ammo, you just don't need to reload it manually. The only truly limitless weapon in the game is Aeternus, which basically is a cold fusion Gatling laser that requires one fusion core to kick it into gear and then will shoot indefinitely.
Dude, you're a realy great story teller. I just love the tone, details, efforts and everthing you put to make you're lore videos. Keep continuing the good work !!
Thank you! I have many more to make :)
Florent Perret i agree very much
I remember reading through all this when I first got to University Point. I must have spent hours around there searching and just reading and looking everything.... by the time I had finished looking through all the terminals and all the stuff in the bank vault I had came pretty much to the point that I'd never want to side with the Institute.
Also if you read through all the facility terminals you can get the password to that back door to the credit union. They use one of the graduate student birthdays which you can find in the student records.
I did much later do an institute play-through; as soon as I "finished" I ditched the save. Kinda glad I was right about my suspicions.
I wish we could of had University Point and Quincy as cites, Bston feels so empty without more main cites. I'd even be okay ith getting them as settlements, can you imagine take quincy back for the minutemen in a huge battle? Missed chances bethesda
Hi
Well I know this is 4 years ago but there might be a mod for University Point but I doubt it and for Quincy there is a creation club creation

Great lore video, Oxhorn. I'm unreasonably proud of myself that I actually found everything you did independently, but I still enjoyed hearing you bring it all together.
Hah thanks! Yeah it's all there. I always learn something new when I revisit these though
Balthazar21 My OCD flares up every time I explore these stories because I'm terrorized of missing a note, holotape or terminal, so I end up running loops for hours triple checking everything, the inevitable result being getting confused by the story... especially when I find the clues out of order. Oxhorn's videos save me that stress!
We know that neverending-legendary energy weapons exist in fallout 4, so the students must have made it back to civilization with their prototypes. Their weapons were sold or stolen and spread throughout the commonwealth and whenever we pick up a legendary laser gun, it comes from that underground lab
Worms Blink they only made two though: in a note Leslie mentions leaving one of the two prototypes behind in the event Campbell made it back
12D3 well they already had the design so who’s to say they didn’t make more outside?
Yeah, because picking up a high-tech tire iron from a legendary radroach totally makes sense
Thanks again Oxhorn, I thought I knew everything about University Point but I had glossed over much of the story and had found the laser rifle without knowing the backstory behind it. If only the Institute wasn't so one track minded when it came to their research. Kellogg might have been dangerous but he was anything but a thinker. So they killed everyone and just left, how short sighted. RIP U.P. Citizens.
everyone dies, father doesnt even cry
Makes you think about who he was and what he became. He allowed for the synth replacements of people, a scary thing, as well as FEV research. But it is hard to destroy it when there is some sentimental value, but more importantly, free health care, beds, and clean water, as well as teleportation.
+aftermathematics365 I can manage my own health care just fine, have beds at my settlement, clean water I can find or make, and I do have teleportation (that's what fast travel is; I'm not so obsessed with immersion that I refuse to use it). I don't need the Institute for any of that.
University Point is what stamped out that little part of me that wanted to believe "maybe the Institute isn't ALL bad." It's the proof that yes, yes they are.
@@aftermathematics365 it was also Kellogg's fault, because of his psychopathic personality.

Damn I love these lore videos of yours. University Point like many stories in FO4 is quite sad, dark and ominous. Well explained. These videos make me realize why I loved FO4 in the first place.
University point is what made me go against the insitute. The idea of wiping out a whole town with its own shops and community that probably was larger than bunker hill. Just becuase there MIGHT be some info that could slightly help research the choice made here is people who truly have lost touch with humanity.
I remember coming here for the first time at low level, the legendary glowing mirelurk from the inside almost fucked me up :D
José Manuel Béjar Martín mirelurks are the worst, especially legendary glowing ones. It's nice to see how that laser gun that uses fusion cores boils the crab like French-canadians
Someone said "remember the attack"so the institute attacked before
ah those 'member berries!
No. That might be the case but they're just talking about some attack they Saw.
Possibly a reference to the broken mask incident. Or the cpg
Nathan Simonet No you’re still wrong
Didn’t the institute send out Gen 1’s and Gen 2’s before the perfected the Gen 3’s
I love your voice when watching these videos you sound like a younger version of ShoddyCast' Storyteller.
Oshiete! OmuRice-chan omg never thought about that
MAJ0R_MALFUNCTI0N lol
I don't watch story teller even if I'd like the history lesson just because he is a bos blow hard who ignores all ills. The only truely non raider bos regime was Lyons, and you can see how his actually effective leadership is seen by The cult of maxon.
This is one of the reasons why I’ll never have an institute character
You should give it a go man! It’s actually one of the better arcs in the game if you side with them 🙂
@@TheMelancholicWriter
Not really.
I stopped playing with my Institute Character when I got the Institute ending with him. I didn't touch him again until I got the Nuka world DLC and decided to use him to go on the raider path. After that, I didn't touch the character again.
To each their own, I found it the best option.
@@TheMelancholicWriter Probably the most technologically advanced faction, yet they made laser guns worst than any pre war weapons.

Thanks for watching!
Even though its just a game I can still imagine what it felt for jaqueline, the sheer regret from uncovering something and terror from the fact that the institute is attacking and killing everyone. I will never have an institute character and will never side with them, they deserve to die underground coffin.
RIP Jaqueline, you would've been a great asset for the commonwealth, Brotherhood of Steel, and even the Minutemen.
This is why the institute is the evil ending!
They deserve EVERYTHING they get!
The Institute has done some grimy things, including this massacre, as well as the synth replacements, which is scary. Still, I could not hurt Father and the free medical care, water, and beds in the Institute made me decide to keep it.
aftermathematics365
As far as the civility of the inner workings of the institute... it is what society should desire.
Their methods are nothing short of pure evil!
To this day, I still do not know what their end goal was with creating synths.
Was it to replace all of humanity?
To spy?
To help human kind?
What was the ultimate goal?
Thank you for replying.
I do appreciate it.
Dichotomy Certainly there! As far as I remember, the Institute made the synths as an intellectual challenge, according to Father. After that, those things began to have sentience and needed to be recaptured. The synths also scavange and to a certain extent provide the Institute with spy information. I say this by doing the SRB quests for Drs. Ayo and Secord. This is technically, no pun intended, easier than relying on cyborgs like Kellogg.
As far as helping humanity, that's where it gets twisted. The Institute has no interest in cleaning up the Commonwealth, unless you as the Director cares by being a Minuteman General too. Father's goal and X6-88's banter indicate that the Institute needs to expand further underground and do experiments and such that only benefit the scientists and their families there. Having that pool of robots to work again minimizes the hazard to human workers and allows the scientists to continue their regular work.
The worst that I can think that can happen to the Institute is for it to be taken over by synths. In one of my plays I'll have to be Brotherhood of Steel, as I find them quite cool. Cheers and look forward to further philosophical discussions on Fallout 4!
aftermathematics365
That was more info than I have learned watching a year of videos on F4.
Thank you very much and I hope to do it again.
It's quite refreshing-and I mean this, to find such a civilized conversation between two people whom enjoy the same thing especially on youtube. I've all but given up on reading comment threads on youtube due to the toxic nature. Good on you two!
Love that Limitless Potential laser rifle. I used console commands to give me 10,000 fusion cells and slapped on an automatic barrel.
Pew pew pew.
Have you also gotten the Wazer Rifle by chance?
aftermathematics365
Not yet but yesterday I destroyed the Institute as the Brotherhood of Steel and brought the Synth Shaun home with me.
Edithae I suppose you can make a dispensation there. He's just so useful!
aftermathematics365
He's my pet synth lol. I imagine the BoS made a special dispensation.
Edithae Rofl, yea that kid is quite the inventor. I can imagine a playthrough where Maxon allows Danse and young Shaun to continue to exist. I find that destroying every synth that I run into is not really feasable without doing something grimy, like killing off the people of Far Harbor just cause there's two synths there in that town.
This was the place that convinced me to destroy the institute, they sent a synth death squad to a peaceful town to gather some data
the institute should have been more patient
Yeah, but they ended up getting nothing because of Kellog's blood thirsty ruthlessness. Instead of listening and maybe even offering the girl and her father a place in the institute for the data and her clever mind with machines he did what he always prefers to do. Kill everyone and take what you want after. Typical of that psychopath. Though considering how the Institute is with "loose ends" even if Jacq and her father had survived they probably would have killed the rest of the town anyway after they had what they wanted.
It was Kellog's fault, mostly, he was the impatient one, the fault of the institute was using Kellog, but there was no other choice.
In fairness I think the institutes usual MO when acquiring new talent (thats scientists, not infiltrators) is to ask first, kidnap if they say no, and replace the people taken with a synth without the other townsfolk even knowing. If loose ends exist they'll kill them, but they don't usually go around actively destroying towns.
In this case, it seems the girl wasn't viewed as worth taking (either because they didn't know she was the one who gained the data or they knew and didn't care anyway), and Kellog wasn't in the mood to be tactful.
I blame Shaun since it was Shaun who used Kellogg.
I do not believe for a moment that kellog was their only agent. It was at such a time I'd contend they could have made a synth just for the sole purpose of aquiring tech and leads. At the end of the day this was a deliberate action sending kellog as it is clear over all of their history the institute has no love for the people above.
I was never able to piece much of this awesome story together, enjoyed the tale
I'm going to savor turning them into a radioactive pothole even more now.
Thanks for ratifying the story Ox. I was annoyed at the stupidity of Jacqueline when I'd picked through the clue parts myself. Exquisite and tragic, great vid... thanks for putting me straight.
Tragically, she just a typical teenager. She's 16 with a single father and is excited at the idea of earning some money to buy herself some nice things. She's not a scientist and has no real education so she doesn't know not to make assumptions with data or skew the facts to fit her theory so when she found something interesting and valuable her imagination and youthful optimism ran away with her. Teenagers are prone to drama and fantasies of perfect case scenarios. It's just unfortunate that Kellog is the pyscho he is. If they'd sent someone reasonable it would have been cleared up in 10 minutes.
Whoa, didn't expect that, and from a passing ship too! Thanks buddy, yes, surely a hidden rich tapestry which you've so succinctly summed up. Hope I haven't missed any hidden meaning... be well K)
@Stacy Wells Yea, Kellog literally ruined everything with his psychopathic violence when the UP people already made it clear that they do not wish harm.
To top it up, thanks to Kellog the Institute was painted as the devil.
To be fair, weeks went by without people of the town asking her... They just send her emails, also instead of deleting them she should have talked with other people.. Shemust have known something was up after she got like 10 hate mails

I love how you ask so many questions and really sit and ponder on the small stories presented to you. I also really enjoy how meta or deep you get with some of the lore, particularly the video you did on if the sole survivor was a synth or not. Have you ever used the Heather casdin follower? Her quest line revolves around university point, I recommend it if you haven't already
Heather is - in my opinion - the best companion and one of the best mods for Fallout 4.
I'm still trying to hunt down the traitor. From all clues I managed to collect, I have two suspects left: Doc Weathers and Lucas Miller (the traitor is male which eliminates Carla and Cricket). The moment I find the final clue one of those two will get a ticket to hell. I promised Heather. :)

What a heartbreaking story... thanks Oxhorn for piecing it together for us.
Excellent story telling as usual.
Anyone know if you visit University point before catching up with Kellog or getting access to the Institute if theres any conversations choices with Kellog/Shaun about university point? Also given the fact that the Insititute uses the Bunker hill traders as informers presumably the unamed Male trader Jacquline told ran off and told his Insititue masters whats she found. Presumably the Institute killed this male trader as the SE Terrirtory now belongs to Cricket (Female)
Good question, but I suppose if what you mean is "does it alter the conversation you have with Kellogg?" I would doubt it, to the sole survivor Kellogg is the guy who killed his/her partner and kidnapped their son so your mind is kinda made up whether the guy is an asshat or not :P
I thought the Bunker Hill merchants were informants for the Railroad, given how Old Man Stockton (owner of many of the caravans) is a high level Railroad asset... also, they stored runaway synths in Bunker Hill: if it were Institute turf, they would've been caught right away
@@ajeje1996 I can't trust those traders, more like traitors.
So cool, I came very close to finding the bunker but never came back to unlock the safe!
This actually makes me feel better about the institute knowing it was Kellog's fault and not Shaun's. It is the Institute's fault, but at least there's a chance to prevent bloodshed between them and the Minutemen later.
Your voice makes it more suspenseful, like, "He said they got in a fist-fight? Whats gonna happen!"
Fun fact, if you use the Unique uniques mod the rifle becomes a self charging weapon that really dose have limitless ammo(potential)... So eh, guess you take that apart you'd have unlimited power.

"But there's one safe with a Master Lock on it.." *Ad kicks in* Dammit.
I think, in one long lost, probably unfinished play through, I renamed that laser rifle something like 'Vengeance', and gave it to Preston for when we raided the institute...
Dude your explanation almost made me cry
institute destroys numerous settlements
fails to kill the lone wanderer
You have your proof, advictoriam brothers.
After thinking about the timeline described in the tapes, one has to wonder how the institute found out about the supposed data so quickly. From the recording of the council meeting it sounded like less than a week passed between the merchant being approached by Jacqueline. For the institute to find out about the data quickly enough for Kellog to get to the town that quickly this would be an indication that the merchant informed the Institute and was possibly a synth replacement.
Wow oxhorn one of your best lore videos you should do diamond city
