If it's not a burglar and it's someone with more serious intent, you want to be ready a fast as possible. If you're in a bedroom with the doors closed and hear a breaking window downstairs, chances are the intruder wouldn't hear you rack the action anyway. I think it's one of those things where a professional burglar would probably behave differently to a junkie, so the pro wouldn't want confrontation & more likely to run than a junkie who may only be on nodding acquaintance with reality.

Number 4 buck is great for shooting in the house but it spreads too much and often lacks penetration. Out of a cylinder bore 00 is the most effective. In Vietnam the navy seals went to war with number 4 buck but switched to 00 after some failures of number 4 buck.

@@RBG-tr9ce thank you for your comment. That hit probability came from pattern spread which makes accounting for each pellet a nightmare for those who have to account for such. The last time I used a shotgun on the job I was using the flight control 00 by federal and my bosses were very happy to find all my pellets on target. I have nothing against number 4 buck but I have used it on deer and wasn't overly impressed with iits performance. I am a reloaded and fanatical ammo tester and have been for decades. Having shot countless hundreds or maybe even thousands of buckshot patterns through many different chokes I would leave number 4 buck for shooting indoors. That's based on my personal experience. I do know of people that have had different results than what I've experienced. Thanks again. P.S. I have always had more trouble getting number 4 buck to pattern than other sizes . But semi-auto's and shotguns I'm either self-taught or learned from watching a lot of youtube videos. I learned about cruiser ready from youtube video's. I didn't know shotguns weren't drop safe until I heard it in a youtube video. You don't know what you don't know. I have 2 others with field barrels on them, but the 870 has never let me down. Whether it is defending the home or taking deer it gets the job done. I accept responsibility for my own actions and I haven't had a speeding ticket for over 12 years now cuz I learned that I don't want a ticket.
I am white and I remember my dad telling me if I ever get pulled over, I put my hands on the top of the steering wheel, turn my car off and roll down my window. What the hell is so hard to figure out.
Have you ever watched a video where a cop comes up to a driver's window and gets shot point-blank with a handgun and then the shit sack drives away?
Give the Cops a break bro. They are the first ones you and/or your family call when something bad happens.
I want Cops in my neighborhood and city and the criminals better hope and pray that they all keep showing up for work. If the Police departments were to be defunded and dismantled, God help the criminals that think they are going to just have their way with innocent people, because the vigilantes that will come forth are going to make any life long criminal wish they had Cops to protect them.
You are watching too much CNN. You need to reprogram your mind and try and get in touch with a little reality.
As I said, I am gonna pray for you because your eyes and ears are not working properly.
      God bless

Pretty good discussion on basic shotgun setup for home defense. I thought about this a lot and my current setup is a Mossberg 500 (already had it to modify but would buy a 590 if purchasing) loaded with 4 buck (less wall penetration), flashlight (Sorry, prefer the bright light of LED), and red dot. Two side saddles with more 4 buck and slugs in the stock saddle. No flight control. You actually proved that normal buck is better for the 5-15 yds that will be the in-house distance. If one can deal with the kick of a 12 gauge it is the best self defense weapon out to 100 yds.

That Federal Flite Control 00B is THE schitt. Our test results when it first came out were similar to your demonstration. We just weren't having the spread and flyers at the ranges we'd get them with the conventional buckshot loads. I had to go out to 30 yards before pellets started missing the (IPSC) target.
Federal also uses that Flite-Control wad in their Black Cloud waterfowl loads allowing you to get more pellets on high flying geese. It easily stretches effective pattern density out an extra 10+ yards.

When I went through ship board security training in the navy, the instructor said just the sound of the shotgun being racked would be enough to scare most bad guys into submission. That being said, if we were to have an actual security threat on board a us navy war ship I doubt seriously the sound of a racked shotgun would scare whatever the threat would've been. Most threats would have come from a professional source i.e. a terrorist or enemy soldier/sailor so when he said what he said I shook my head in disbelief. This was way back in 1986 and I have since done numerous rifle, handgun and shotgun training courses and not one of these instructors ever said the mere sound would scare the bad guy away. XM134- it's heavy enough you aren't tempted to use it in anyway but a fixed support weapon, electrically drive lever actions so you don't really need to worry too much about jams, and if you put the right sized resistor in the power line it will throttle way down. You lose the advantage of the audible signature, but it means you less well trained individuals are less likely to waste ammo. And high tracer count belts are stunning- death ray.
Of course, you can extend the spindle and the cage so you can put muzzle cans on the barrels. That makes those high tracer belts even more funny.

I've always heard good things about the Remington 870, and I had always wanted one for shooting dove and quail. For years I hinted to the Ol' Blister about it every time Christmas or my birthday rolled around, but alas, it was not meant to be. The closest I got was one Christmas, when the first present she had me open was a beautiful hard case for an 870, and I was certain that by the end of the day I would be fondling a shiny, new shootzenbangen and daydreaming about the first couple of boxes of boomenition I would be running through it at the trap range. Disappointment slowly set in as the day got later and later, and it became more and more apparent that the much anticipated boomstick was not forthcoming. I was confused and not a little hurt, thinking she had played a mean trick on me. Come to find out, she thought I already had an 870 and was hinting about getting a nice case for it. Since then, she has been trying to make up for it. One year she bought me a nice, little Ruger 10/22. Another year it was a Remington 7600 chambered for 30-06. Sadly, I never did get the 870 I so longed for all those years. When I had the money, there was always something else I didn't have, and figured I already had a nice Winchester 12 guage, a Savage 20 guage and a fun, little Rossi double-barrel coach gun with 18 inch barrels and big, rabbit-ear hammers that I loved to hunt dove with, so I would just wait a bit longer for the Remington. As the years slipped by, I hunted less and less. Mostly because I'm just getting too old and tired. Hey, I still get out once in a while, I mean I'm not dead, yet.

@@OGsDangerShow I'm lucky I'm at an age when I learned Both Imperial (feet & inches, pounds & ounces , pints and gallons etc.) and the Metric system ( Millimeters , Centimeters and Meters , also Grams & Kilograms )( It's All Base Ten ! Simple) Trust Me once You know it Metric is easier but I still prefer the good old Imperial system but then I also liked Stirling ( Pounds Shillings and Pence half pences and even farthings -1/4 of a penny !) more than I like the decimalised pound , Education standards were better because everyone knew not just the 10X tables but 12 14 & 20 You had to or You might not get the quantity You wanted when You bought anything . Stay Safe OG !

Although I love my semi auto shotguns, my pumps are my go to. You simply can’t beat a good ol pump shotgun. I like Remy’s, but I’m a Mossy guy if I have to choose. Great video brother. Love the channel.

If the Marines issue the Mossberg 590, they must be decent. I prefer the safety on a Mossberg. My Mossberg is at the ready at my house, the Benelli is basically a safe queen.

OG I have been a fan of the 12 GA. since I was a boy. In my older age I went to a Mossberg 930 semi auto. The recoil is much less . Equipt with a red dot sight it is deadly as long as I do my part. Great Vid..

I enjoy officer Gregg and his opinions. Great wisdom there. I am thinking a combo setup- a 18 inch Mossberg 500 shotgun, and a longer hunting barrel (either a rifled sight one or a longer bird barrel). That way the gun can fill multiple purposes.

Just added your channel OG, followed the link from Tao and this is the first video I watched because I AM interested in purchasing a shotgun for home defense. Lots of good information here to consider. Many thanks for that.
I think we used the 870 as the shotgun 'leg' of our ship's self defense force so I did get some training with it back when Fred Flintstone was a boot, also on the M-14 in .308 and I carried the old faithful M1911A1 as a duty sidearm for much of my Navy career.
    Stay safe man.
