Just a great informative vid, bike looks good, both the new 250/450, be cool to hear if the GP version is available in both the 250f and 450f in Aus and NZ?
Every night I fall asleep and dream about the day I find out Yamaha got off their arses and finally made a WR 450r/x. No other bike is more sort after in the trail/SuMo world.
Does anyone know how these new 2018 Wr450's start hot? I have a 2012 and it has starting issues and recently bought it. Cold start its fine most of the time but hot it won't start, even kick starting and I think that is due to cooler weather now. It has got progressively worse and worse. It was this way when I bought it with only 10 hrs on it. I'm the third owner in that short of period and the bike is still virtually new. Its obvious now (poor starting) why this bike has been through two previous owners. Thinking of trading it in on a 2018 wr450 but ONLY if Yamaha fixed it the starting. If not going to look at new 2018 orange bikes in a couple weeks. We have rides planned soon and not waiting around to deal with this nonsense.
How many hours or km can this engine go if treated properly before a valve adjustment or topend rebuild. Long lasting engine like in other Yamaha builds is what i need. None of the fourstroke testers ever try to answer this.
The maps are available on the Yamaha Australia site. I'm currently using the 'Chris Hollis map' which is not as punchy. My favourite type of riding is technical single and it's suiting well. The suspension is very good, but as you would expect needs a bit of effort to set up right.
hello man ,nice video! i have an xt660z tenere 2008.. and i want to ask you if wr450f is capable to travel 180km distance at list, about 2 hours road, straight, with the same speed, like 110km /hour... can the bike handle this travel on asphalt??? with the thought that i change the gas tank with bigger
What you suggest is possible. But a better alternative is to watch another video titled, "Desert Sled" to see the most appropriate set up for what you want to do.
How many years will they make the same mistake .... air intake for the air booth and filter is on the top of radiator, collecting all the dust, hot air and especialy SAND into the air filter when you tip over... Removing kickstart for weight? Do they give it as an extra package or you need to buy on for some big money? :( However i do think they going forward... slowly
the air intakes are well in front of the rads. not directly above them. on the move there is no chance of them breathing hot air. For enduro the air box is in the best place, up high away from water and sand. much better placement then ktm air filter which is right down low on the side with little protection. They make the gp edition with a few added perks. I ride through 3 ft of water on mine with mates on ktm, my filter was much cleaner then theirs.
So how chocked up is the new model? Is it still the same case of remove the exhaust restrictions (quiet tip and spark arestor), replace throttle screw (to allow full opening) and remove the snorkel in the airbox?
Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV I would agree, but I clearly remember when they came out with it they advertised it as shorter exhaust and even made them with the exhaust running strait back for at least the first year, I seen a cpl in my local dealer that way
At least in the states race teams custom made the wrap around header before Yamaha switched to it in order to get more back pressure. DRD did it first IIRC, and they also made an "engine relocation kit" that tipped the engine forward to put some weight back on the front tire. The mass centralization was not well received unless you were a die hard Yamaha fan and didn't care what the bike felt like. :)
The Sick Horse Ranch interesting, yet unfortunate they can't just accomplish the needed back pressure in the slip on to keep the simplification of that air/in front, exhaust/out rear, seemed like such a rational innovation.
I'm not sure if you had noticed but even Yamahas original design had a corkscrew in it where the carb would be on an older bike. They understood they needed as much header length as they could cram in, they just hadn't settled on the best way to do it yet.
Why do u limit this to 5 gears? It makes it a no go for modifying it into an adventure enduro bike for long trips.... why cant Yamaha make a road legal 450 with a 6th gear??
don't ever remove a kickstarter... u may never need it or need it once in a thousand rides... but when.u do, can be the difference between getting home or having serious problems...
looks like a sick ride. unfortunatley we probably wont get these in thailand OR they will be available at double the retail price due to the rip off tax system here of anything imported
Absolutely, it was the worst. Not sure if you are from Australia. We had a cicarda plague, and that's the noise you are hearing. Got to tell ya I don't think mics would have made a difference.
It's very complicated to explain how Green and Red sticker works in California. Red Sticker bikes are dirtbikes or any OHV that do not pass certain emission standards in CA and are usually distinguished in the VIN numbers with a 3 or a C on the 8th position. In CA the WR250F and WR450F were specifically tuned to be green stickers for years 2017 and before. Some states, you are allowed to plate them making their values go up. These bikes were choked down to throttle stops and other limiting factors to make them compliant. A few simple mods pretty much would turn it to a YZ250/450FX motorwise Now since the 2018's are out there is a new list of Red Sticker vehicles and the WR250/450F's are Redsticker bikes alongside with the YZ250/450FX making them pointless to buy. Love the way the Aussies approach things in life. Excellent practical mindset with the skills to back it up.

MrBungle222 I hear that!
I might have missed it in the video, but is it fuel injected?

Pretty sweet looking bike Dave, good job. How is the hammy?
Nearly there.
How many hours or km can this engine go if treated properly before a valve adjustment or topend rebuild. Long lasting engine like in other Yamaha builds is what i need. None of the fourstroke testers ever try to answer this.
Hopefully 80 hours or more I would imagine
Great vid Dave , can't wait to see it in action , can we get those maps over here in Europe
The maps are available on the Yamaha Australia site. I'm currently using the 'Chris Hollis map' which is not as punchy. My favourite type of riding is technical single and it's suiting well. The suspension is very good, but as you would expect needs a bit of effort to set up right.

A map switch would be nice, really like the look of the WR but it is still missing things the European bike have had for a couple of years or more.
Sir i have a query
When will you upload the full video of Ladakh bike tour on CZcams....please
Thanks
That my friend is a very good question. I've been very busy.

Its all too easy to keep the ignition on for a long time, battery flat, and you need that kickstart, hope someone is around to give you a tow!

There is a lot of crap that needs to be removed from the bike.
Thanks, will more detail of this "crap" be available later?
Ah good point, I didn't film it because in Australia it's done for you at time of purchase if you request it. Sorry about that.
Still have my 2018 Wrf 450 (buyed it new) its still a magic enduro bike and made of me a better pilot of shure 😅
Yammie - WR450R please :)
bro this is a fucking awesome video, keep it up
those blue rims.. think iv just found my new bike..
Sick bike
Awesome bike hey.
Full playlist of Test 2018 Yamaha WR450 F videos click here. czcams.com/play/PLkM9-Vs7YnzgzdlIpmDgFKjH-RhEag4oY.html
plenty of information right there
Are these maps still available? And can they be applied to a 2020 model in the United States ?
No idea.
Nice video
Thanks, an oldy but a goody.
What's the point in turning the head just to wrap the exhaust all the way around it anyway ?
Mass centralisation. I think the exhaust has to be wrapped around to maintain back pressure.
Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV I would agree, but I clearly remember when they came out with it they advertised it as shorter exhaust and even made them with the exhaust running strait back for at least the first year, I seen a cpl in my local dealer that way

What is the maximum limit of this bike in terms of distance that it can be riden ?
It will find out in the coming weeks.
Nice!!!! Absolutely no positive changes from my 2016 model Wr450f ahahah
I guess it will hold its value for another 14 months ahaha
Thanks Yamaha
I like how they admit the rear tire wears out too quick haha... Good PR guys :-/
How often should do a check and clean the air filter?
depends on the conditions
most people i know including myself, clean and oil the filter after every ride
Aluminum doesn't flex it cracks, no? Maybe I'm wrong. I LOVE Yamaha. Best bikes EVER !!!!!!!!!
Will it travel 100 kilometers with that fuel cell?
Will find the out in the test.
How many kilometers does it take before changing the oil?
500ks
Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV thank you for the info.
this isn't long distance DUAL SPORT its short service interval high maintenance and you will need a pro mechanic to come with it
explain how removing the kick starter would be an advantage to 99.9 percent of trail riders?
You rid the kick start to sell more batteries...
I was telling a buddy of mine about my 2014 WR. He rides extreme Alpine and Moto. He had no idea what the hell it was. Lmao. Talk about Missing out.
Why do u limit this to 5 gears? It makes it a no go for modifying it into an adventure enduro bike for long trips.... why cant Yamaha make a road legal 450 with a 6th gear??

I like it but 500km recommended oil changes could get tedious.
i service my 09 wr450f every 350km. And it sure does need the change of oil.
WR450R please...... or modify WR250R, in US most serious riders put big bore kit for more power.
SeeThatIamAble 100% agree! We need a WR450R for the U.S. We all know Yamaha can make it just as reliable and maintenance friendly as the WR250R
looks like a sick ride. unfortunatley we probably wont get these in thailand OR they will be available at double the retail price due to the rip off tax system here of anything imported
Sad. They are bloody good. !
Connor haha no way... Klx330. The crf sucks ;)
Connor lol for sure ... Lets hope yamaha do a deal with thailand for the 450 ;)
Thailand is much better compare to Philippines when talking about the price of motorcycle.
show the noise of the bike
Yes Yamaha ..mean
need to check your facts . nothing happened in 2014 , bike is the same from 2012 to 2015, then new gen yzf backwards 5 valve head
Not my facts. The man works for Yamaha.
Yamaha need hidrolic cloutch
Change oil every 500? There goes the dual purpose idea.
Yeah, I get your concerns, with good quality oil you'd pull off close to a 1000 k adventure without too much problem, but that's it limit!
Why doesn’t Yamaha street legal it out of the box so we can make Supermoto’s out of them or better yet make us a supermoto!
Your guys need to wear a mic, audio is shocking. Good vid otherwise.
Absolutely, it was the worst. Not sure if you are from Australia. We had a cicarda plague, and that's the noise you are hearing. Got to tell ya I don't think mics would have made a difference.
Yeah the bikes good... this sales guy's all full of S..t!...
this bike is worthless in CA since it is a red sticker. Might as well get the 450FX
Please explain red sticker
It's very complicated to explain how Green and Red sticker works in California. Red Sticker bikes are dirtbikes or any OHV that do not pass certain emission standards in CA and are usually distinguished in the VIN numbers with a 3 or a C on the 8th position.
