This guy is a highly skilled rider and can make the most of the 450's strong engine. I am a competent novice, and did this same experiment and had opposite results, I was a little bit faster on the 250f. If you are just riding for fun, get the 250f.

I agree and I have less fatigue when riding a 250f. To me the only advantages to the 450f are being able to pull past your friends on a long straight away or in a drag race and doing kick a$$ power wheelies (on a long straight away) 🏁

I agree with this 100%. Easier to play around with different cornering methods and be consistent on the lower power bikes. However I am pretty interested in a 450 just because I won’t be as hard on the bike and hopefully get more longevity out of it.

Now I am on an 350 EXC, which is really the best from both sides and just perfect for me right now. I added an HGS Slip-On Silencer, which had the effect of a bit more Power in almost every RPM, and bit of less wheight. The sound was not a factor for me. But it isn't bad though.

I know a 250 is faster in my type of tight bush riding. BUT I love the tractor of a 450 and you dont need to rev it to go places. A 450 you can still be low rpm and smash out a corner. A 250 needs a clutch blip or a downshift. My next ride will be a 350.

You looked faster and more importantly comfortable on the 450 in my opinion mate the 250 seemed to struggle off the bottom a fair bit and unless you're a pro level rider it's harder to keep it in the power. I have a my19 WR450F it has the GYTR exhaust FMF muffler etc I actually went back to the OEM muffler and left the GYTR header pipe great combination it slightly detuned the bike even changed the intake sound probably due to more back pressure. not making it bark straight off the bottom made it heaps more fun to ride I found map 2 slightly detuned it a bit more and use it for extremely snotty hills I took the insert out of the muffler and now find it hard to falt. I was comparing the 2 myself and thought about downsizing to the 250 for deep bush riding or with the 250 and 450 being so similar maybe re sleeving it to a 350 now I'm waffling on 😅 great video thanks for sharing mate cheers Happy Trails oh I really like your riding style wish I could rail berms like you do 👌💣

Currently riding a 350xcfw I'm worried I will be disappointed with the power of the 250f but having rode a 07 yz450f in the woods for years that would tire me out I don't know if want to go back to a 450. On a side note here in the US these bikes typically come with a very choked up exhaust for emissions and are super quiet that usually gets the insert removed before riding but your bikes sounded really good and not choked up at all. Did you remove the insert or do they just come with a less restrictive exhaust in Australia?

I have two KTMs, identical year and chassis. 250 2 stroke and 450 4 stroke. Riding conditions like this on the 450 I feel like I'm riding sloppy, making mistakes, riding slow - and then the stop watch surprises me every time. I'm slower on the 450 but not by much at all. I think the 450 just makes up time out of every corner even if you feel like you're riding like crap. I find myself sitting a lot more on the 450 even if I try to avoid it - I noticed you did this too (rock garden). I stand 99% of the time on the 250.
Ok, so the bikes feel different but have similar lap times. BUT the 450 is a work out to ride. My knees get chaffed from holding on which doesn't happen on the 250. It would be interesting for you to do a 2 hour harescramble on that loop on each bike and see which you find more enjoyable after doing that (a week or so apart of course!)
I also think that the newer the rider, the tougher time they will have with a big bore. A new rider will learn better on a smaller bike and that will bring more speed for them.

I know where the stopwatch came out, but you looked so much more comfortable on the 250. Maybe you were tired when you got to the 450, but there is a big difference in your riding behavior on when approaching obstacles between the two bikes. On the 250, you were riding it, and one many occasions on the 450, it was leading you. Maybe your answer is that Yami needs to build a 350. :)

Wow...you are an amazing rider...I'm pretty sure you could give Jarivs a run for his money! To me you looked smoother on the 450..more flow. I wonder if the flow of the 450 would tire a rider out less than the lighter/flickable 250 over the course of a 4 hour enduro?

I watched a vid about that R vs F and the go is... ...all further comments are in comparison...
      R has more comfort
      They are different platforms
R has a softer more bouncy back
R is geared to run on lower rpm
For a novice R is more manageable
R will last longer before rebuild
      R is heavier
      R no good on sand
      R has less torque feel
      F is more agile
F sticks more to the ground (better suspension reaction with less bounce, in comparison F would be equivalent to a suspension with a good strut and R a bad strut.
If you looking at trail go F if you are looking at lighter riding or mixed road/dirt go for an R
R is heavier in "weight ratio feel"
F jerky acceleration R smoother acceleration more controllable for the novice.
I am looking for my first dirt bike, I am 43 skilled roader... ... because of my previous experience I think I will do better with an F and perhaps as a future upgrade from an F I will look at a 350cc than if I gain enough skills quickly I might jump from 350cc into a KTM 525 exc
In the end of the day in this same comparison I watched the dude was going on about Ego vs Reason. So many make this choice out of Ego get a 450cc have less fun due to wearing the body out faster than a 250.
I believe if you intend to use it as a dual sport go with R if you intend to focus on trails like me go with F.
Although I mentioned all this information I am still wondering if I should prioritise comfort or more so quick throttle response... ...I think I will pick F since I am aiming for thick bush trailing and whenever it needs a rebuild I might just go big bore 350cc rebuild and sprocket to run the engine in higher rpm... See that and the fact I am short legged makes the 250cc frame size and sitting heigh ideal compared with any bike above 250cc

Do any of you folks know if the Aussie WR's are the same WR's that we get in the US? What we get in the US are fairly choked-up, i.e... throttle stop, filter snorkel, milder ECU settings, etc.. I realize all this can be addressed with GYTR or other aftermarket companies, i'm just curious. @ARieman1, awesome dirt/terrain on your property mate. What a killer place to ride!

    • @armourbl
      @armourbl Před 3 lety

@@joshsmith9058 For sure there will be places where the 500 is the better choice, but I'm pretty sure sand isn't one of them. I've ridden a few 2-strokes in the sand and they feel better to me, especially when turning. My entire ride group rides 250's and 300's, some moved away from 4-strokes and seem very happy overall. The 500 gets me a lot of praise, especially after cleaning technical sections, but it also comes at the expense of all the extra weight and fatigue.

I could have sworn you would have been faster on the 250 just because of the weight difference and being more controllable. Good job though nice to see someone not shit on the big boy for once. I just test rode a WR450F today. It has HILARIOUS POWER. As in HOOLIGAN amounts of power. Absolutely ridiculous fun. Gets very hot quickly though, even with a fan installed. In addition, I also rode a WR250F, back-to-back.
The 250 felt like it could the same things and more than the 450, although albeit with much less power, but still very fun also. I'm torn between the 2 as they're both the same price. Hilarious, hooliganish fun at the expense of fine control in the tight, stuff? Or sure-fire all-around weapon, at the expense of high-speeds on the road (and fast trails)?

So thankfully I'm end up getting a WR250f which to be suitable and proper choice. The 450 goes after mastered the 250/300cc with bunch of hours in it. Just bringing the realistic for the beginner/intermediate rider who's looking for move up to the big boys bike.
