    This is the problem in the UK. There are no real world consequences for councils bankrupting their town. None at all
    The worst they have to face is resigning or being suspended, always on full pay, until they resign or get sacked
    They still get their pension and perks
    No investigation ever leads to corruption charges and no one ever appears in court
    I'll tell you has to suffer real world consequences though, the people of the town they have just bankrupted

      It’s a problem with national government. We’ve witnessed the largest transfer of wealth in history from the poor to the wealthy during the pandemic.
      Most of the handouts (which were very much needed, don’t get me wrong) went to the rich (which is the problem; it should’ve gone to people who need it, not those who need it the least).
      This is what happens when you allow concentration of wealth such that they can use that concentration to influence politics, be it by pushing propaganda electorally, or through legalised corruption (i.e. lobbying/donations).
      People hate the Tories now, but they voted for them repeatedly over 14 years now. Stupid in the extreme and people here are reaping what they’ve sewn (save for young people who have been shat on their entire life by geriatric lead-addled boomers).

      I have working in public sector. It’s designed to make sure not one is accountable. Counsellors say they aren’t accountable as they take the recommendations of the staff. Staff out source to consultants so they can’t be held accountable. The consultants are typical interviewing the staff so they say they can’t be held accountable and wouldn’t sign a contract that held them accountable. And finally competitive tendering means you have to accept the lowest price so you can’t be held accountable. If you screwed up this bad in most private companies you get fired.

    For a bit of context, they made a bunch of questionable financial decisions, but the reason they actually went bankrupt was an equal pay lawsuit where they weren't giving female-dominated roles like cleaners the same bonuses as male-dominated ones like binmen.
    So they ended up owing over a billion in compensation because they hadn't paid bonuses to a few hundred employees. The funny part is they wouldn't have been sued if they'd never paid any bonuses in the first place.

    • @Buu_Tang_Clan
      @Buu_Tang_Clan Před 7 měsíci +35

      I think that's got to be one of the very few examples of actual unequal compensation I've ever heard of. Usually it's people not understanding averages and gender preferences in certain jobs that make them believe the myth that women earn less than men for the same work. The council have got to be idiots to not realise that this was a bit of a dodgy prospect when they were dishing out those bonus payments. Normally it's easy to pay one group more or less because of different job titles/roles but obviously in this case you can argue very easily that binmen and cleaners are similar positions, just with a different male to female ratio.
      I don't know what it's like in Birmingham but the binmen in my town are a useless shower of wankers so if they get bonus payments from my council I'd be well pissed off. Most of the people who work for the council are bloody useless in fact. Can't say I've ever had a positive experience anytime I've had to deal with them.

      @@boostedrecords442 That's entirely your choice mate you're allowed to think different but I disagree with you. I don't think one role is more difficult than the other as they've both got easy and tough parts of the job. I've saw enough of the workload for each role and they are more similar than you'd think. That's how they won this case because most people would say they are the same job. Everyone has their own rose-tinted glasses. Unfortunately It is what it is.

    • @Buu_Tang_Clan
      @Buu_Tang_Clan Před 7 měsíci +6

      @@basedbrit4206 Because they are similar jobs in most people's minds and most of society see women as victims of evil men, so 2+2 = a lawsuit. In my local council they get paid roughly the same base wage, though bin men do get paid a smidge more which doesn't help. The nurse/surgeon comparison is dumb man. Those are completely different in the actual work, training and just about everything really. You ask Joe Public and they'll say the same.
      You seem to be under the impression that I think it's right what happened with the bonuses but I don't. I'm saying that the council were idiots not to realise that the women would kick up a fuss about not receiving a bonus like the binmen did. Most women believe this pay-gap myth so the second they can argue about being underpaid they will. Especially since most people would equate refuse collector & cleaner as roughly the same type of job.

A decade later, they just managed to "almost" complete the first route, well over budget and having to have the Scottish govt to foot the bill they couldn't pay because they did so well at getting conned by the contractor. A decade of road work for one of the main artery for north Edinburgh (Leith Walk), different contractors digging the same piece of road at different time to move the utilities and finally having to decide whether to paid a multimillions fine to cancel the project altogether or to get a loan to complete it.

      To be fair, Detroit’s bankruptcy is quite literally not the fault of Detroit’s government but Michigan’s government and the arch-conservative “emergency manager” they appointed as effective dictator. When the 2008 financial collapse hit, practically every city in the US sued the banks for selling them fraudulently advertised housing securities, avoiding the massive bill they’d be stuck with otherwise.
      Detroit on the other hand, wasn’t controlled by its people but by emergency manager Kevyn Orr. Orr was a massive advocate of privatizing everything in detroit, he’d already got the power company done and wanted to move on to privatizing transit, schools, and most importantly, their water service, which would be the first private water extractor on Lake Michigan. So, Orr prevented Detroit’s city government from suing the banks and their creditors and intentionally drove the city into bankruptcy in a failed attempt to sell off Detroit’s water utilities, which also service most of the ~3.75-million strong metro area.

      If only councils spent the money they spent on street sculptures on cleaning and maintenance instead. But it's "Let's put a bull there to distract visitors from the ugly post war architecture and ring roads." I visited Birmingham and was glad to get away from the Bull Ring Centre after arriving at New Street station and headed for the museums just north of the city centre.
      I later discovered a Canal Quarter and Jewellery Quarter there after attending events in those places. Most visitors wouldn't know they existed and even some residents wouldn't know of them let alone go there. When I visited the Jewellery Quarter it was amazingly quiet yet so much to see there. It reminded me of Bruges in Belgium.

    Not the UK, but had a funny little chat with my mom today. She lives in what in the UK would be considered a council house, or w/e.
    Several years ago, "the city"(actually the estate maintenance company) built a nice little gate and fence around the apartment complex. Now the building occupants had access to their own little parking area for a small fee. Call a specific number and the gate opens. Eeasy, peasy. The users paid for the maintenance.
    Turn to today and the city decided: "Nah fam! We are assigning you with parking cards you have to apply for from the local council. No more of that calling a number bollocks"
    So now the well built gate, that worked exactly as it was intended to... it´s just permanently open. It´s gonna stand there until it doesn´t function, at which point it will just rust away. Now they will have the local parking police coming about and fining the cars that are not supposed to be parked there.
    They actually built something perfect. It could not have been done any better. And I would not be shocked if they keep paying the maintenance fee on the gate, despite it not being used. It´s stupidity at it´s fines.
    And no. I do not believe they did this to find more cars to fine. I legitimately do not believe they are smart enough to come up with such a scheme.

      I blame both Labour and Conservative parties for this. The Conservatives for cutting funding and Labour wasting money on vanity projects and redevelopment instead of the basic services and repairs, maintenance and cleaning. Buildings will crumble if not maintained. Places will look unsightly if not cleaned or cleared of litter frequently. I lived in Plymouth in the 80s and the Conservative controlled council would not spend money on anything to benefit the residents only to attract visitors. So a small theatre, cinema or swimming pool that only locals used would be closed and the money spent instead on a huge city centre theatre, lido and leisure centre to attract tourists.
      You couldn't borrow a book in the library that was less than two years after the publication date. You couldn't recommend many books for the library to order there. The library department decided what books the residents should read.
      The streets on the post war council estates were never cleaned. Only the ones in the centre, inner city and well to do suburbs were. Union Street just outside of the city centre was left to decay and rot. It had beautiful old red brick buildings. I would go there for cheap discount shopping.

      New libraries get built as the old one was too small. Cardiff Council built a new main library above an Iceland shop. Why should people have to use lifts and escalators just to use the first floor of a library. Then built a third one on top of fancy restaurants that few people can afford to eat in. There is a small downstairs area with a few books, main desk and soft settees to sit on when feeling tired. But they could have built a separate children's library under the main library instead of having restaurants.
      Then they closed the Star centre sports hall in Splott and the swimming pool in a nearby park to build a leisure centre and library complex in the same park when they could have have converted the Star centre sports hall into a library with meeting rooms and extended the existing swimming pool to have other sports facilities. Libraries need to be where the shops are which is why the libraries in Pontypridd and Caerphilly were moved from a back street and park to the town centres to make them more accessible.

    It made my day when I find out this sh*tty city council announced that they were bankrupt. When I lived there, as a 20 year old, I requested rental assist (euphemisms for housing benefit. Lived near Broad Street Cineworld). I began a 3 month Gas engineering course and had enough savings to cover my daily expenses for the duration, but I required a partial help with the rent. Imagine my shock, when the BCC guy over the phone said to me "you do not qualify and may have to go back to Germany if you are struggling with living cost."
    Forgive me if I indulge in a little bit of schadenfreude. Don't get me started on the Library loool. I moved when it was officially opened and remember reading that it went over budget by like £80m+ hahhahaha.
    EDIT: _No waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay_ (my fake Brummie accent tehehe). THANK YOU ALL for taking your time to read my scribbled anecdote.
